  • I've been asked about my Fujifilm X-H1 settings, and I also chat about how IBIS works and how you turn it on and off. I also cover how I use manual focus, focus peaking, and using vintage lenses.
    And yes, I know my X-H1 is starting to look a bit beaten up, but that's what happens to a work camera, and it's got plenty of life left in it :)

    When I got an X-T2 I found myself using front button focus. Works really well. I have an H1 on the way and I might just keep on with front button focus. I also use autofocus similarly and rarely see the need for AF or CAF. While it’s nice to have a snappy focusing lens like the XF35 f2 it’s great using fully manual lenses and many times I prefer that experience.

    Nice video, thanks! Suggestion...if you use back button focussing on the “af on” button, as designed, then if you set the focus mode to AFC then for moving subjects we press AF on with our thumbs AND the shutter button with our index fingers at the same time! Try that with your front back button focussing...

    It’s cheap (now that it’s discontinued), 4k @200Mbps, ETERNA, IBIS and the grip are reasons why I picked this over the other Fuji bodies.

    I decided to see how much of my XH1 I was using in manual mode by switching every thing off in camera and I was suprised to see that I don't need most of the camera for my work. I only shoot in manual mode and if you use third party lenses like I do I only need the very basics from my camera. The battery lasts roughly eight hours with continous stablisation mode switched on although camera is programmed to switch off after 5mins none use. I can go out for a days shoot with only two batteries ( one as a back up just in case.) It does beg the question why do we need such cameras with all the internal hype, only wish someone would produce a quality camera body that is all manual and nothing else at an affordable price. If I find it that's my next camera. Your Black Russian lens is not the sharpest, try KMZ Industar M39 50 f3.5 50mm in silver, looks a bit like the Russian spaceship, very sharp and a beautiful 'Tessar' lens to use.

    G'day Greg, David here from Brisbane. I've been shooting on an XT2 for the past 7 years now and have only just upgraded to an XH1 as I had no need for 40 mgp on the XH2, besides I prefer the solid build as to me there's just something about the XH2 in hand that feels a little too plastic for my liking. I guess I am used to a heftier body as I usually have a grip attached where possible particularly for Wedding or Portrait shoots.
    Anyway, great video as I am yet to experiment with the IBIS which I am sure will come in 'handy' for Wedding, Portrait and Event work. BTW I'll be using that front button focus from now on so thanks for the tip, it's a beauty! I use manual focus with highlight peaking wherever possible outside of moving subjects / objects. Do you use the split screen in the viewfinder for peak focus whilst main frame to compose? I find that EVF feature fantastic, it's one of the reasons I love Fujifilm mirrorless other than the film simulations it offers for my ex lab rat background in Pro Labs (Townsends / Nulab / Streets Imaging & Photo Technica) to name a couple. I do miss the wet lab days and spending hours on end under a red safe light.
    Was that video shot on a Sunday morning? I can hear a whipper snipper or blower in the background plus the birds tweeting, a natural Aussie setting and love it.
    How long have you been a photo presso? Wish I got into that profession at my beginings of the early 90's. Huge Respect for your craft, from what brand did you cross to Fuji?
    I was a Canon EOS man originally, prior to that Minolta GX1 & Dynax. Currently I still shoot on my Mamiya 645 ProTL for film projects. Loved the X series when it launched and haven't looked back (owned the XT1 and XT2) but I do miss eye focus from the EOS 3 it was brilliant. I assumed you being a photo journo you must have been a Nikon 4,5,6 man in your past?
    Anyway I'd be interested to hear of your beginings, gear used both past and present and your photographic background. Where abouts in Oz do you reside?

    • @GregCarrick
      @GregCarrick  Год назад

      Hi David, thanks for your comments. I'll go through in order... I haven't actually held an X-H2 yet, so can't compare the feel of the build. My gripe is they have moved to a PASM dial, which I don't like. I'm a bit old school. I do use the split screen to adjust focus when using the EVF, and think it's a great feature. Video was probably done on a lazy Saturday, and there's always birds around our place. I worked as a photojournalist for over a decade, and also ran my own newspaper in my town (Mt Evelyn) as I have an extensive background in newspapers since I left school and did my trade as a newspaper printer. I started shooting for the press back in the film days with my Olympus OM1, then with digital I went, as you guessed, with a couple of Nikon bodies. I always carried two cameras on the job, with different focal lengths to quickly swap between them. Then Fuji came out with their marvellous cameras and I used an X-T2 and the X-H1 as my two bodies. One with a 12mm lens, the other with, usually, an 18-135mm. You had some great cameras yourself in your past, and good to hear you still shoot film sometimes.

    • @davidfromdownunder
      @davidfromdownunder Год назад +1

      @GregCarrick Hi Greg, thanks for the insight much appreciated. Wow, I do envy you and the Newsprint Industry, my how it has changed! I would assume from your background as the youngies would call it 'horse & cart days' you developed and printed 'in house' with your OM-1 ? Speaking of Olympus I was very tempted recently to grab an OM-D-E-MX1 body (mostly for the ruggered weather sealed body) but to shoot a little Wildlife and try something different.
      I'm not sure where Fuji is heading in the future they seem to have forgotten the purist photographer and their original target market. Dare I say it I think they are 'focussing' more on the videographer / content creator. Personally, I think they've lost their soul a little yet I hope they adjust and surprise us all with a release of a XPro4 as I do like the feel and design of a film based experience the XT and Xpro lines bring.
      I was close to upgrading to an XT5 but again for me the body is getting way to compact, lite and plastic and without a vertical grip / power booster option it's a bit of a deal breaker however, I do like the Retro cage that Small Rig have avaiable to accommodate a decent grip I just don't need the million and one screw holes to attach video based gear (monitor, mic, etc)
      I just went into DigiDirect this morning in Brisbane to collect some 120mm FILM and had a second look at the XT5 as I too am not a fan of a PSAM dial it's why I left Canon and opted for mechanical dials on the X series as for me that process is a God send using the exposure triangle so easily without having to press this button plus that and getting lost in the settings just to compose and shoot. I love how the XT slows me down to think about how I want to expose it's why another reason that I cannot convert to the XH2 BUT in saying all that my eyes aren't as well as they use to and trying to see the dials can be a total PITA (pain in the ar$e) especially in low light situations it's why I researched a lot on You Tube on the XH2 and I do like the much improved and brighter EVF it offers as opposed to the lower what is on the XT5.
      Hmmmm.... I think I might have to revist 'Booray' channel on YT to watch his video on the advantages of the XH2's PASM dial compared to the mechanical dials on the XT5, he argues a very good point on why he prefers the XH2. Perhaps I may upgrade to the XH3 in future if they make a better build quality and not so Video orientated. It's why I am putting off a major upgrade until I hear if a XPro4 is released for my travel, street and landscape shooting purposes.
      So your a Victorian ? My father's hometown is Geelong and I was a mad Cat Fan growing up, Ablett Senior obsessed! When Lethal took over in 98 I jumped ship as I figured I am Brisbane born and bred yet I get down to Sleepy Hollow for a game at KP every now and again and catch up with the Relos as I have cousins, uncles, aunties, a brother and sister living there. Who's your team? Dogs had a big win last night. I am hoping for a top 2 finish this year to maybe see two successful games at the Gabbatoir prior to the big dance in that last Saturday of September. I am very close to booking a flight to Avalon (just in case) for that last weekend in September.
      What carrying system do you like to use whilst on assignment? I like both Spider Pro and Cotton Carrier but just picked up a Peak Design Capture Clip to give it a go and attach the Clip to my newly purchased Think Tank / Mind Shift 34 litre 180 degree rotation bag. That bag is a game changer! I'll never go back to lowepro or other after trialling it. Wow! is all I'll say, if you haven't seen that bag or thought about it look it up. I picked up the older smaller hike style this morning at DigiDirect for a steal at just $49! Thinking of sending my newer 34 Litre ($438) back as that'll be more for the winter months which we get bugger all of here in SE QLD however it could come in handy for a Fraser (K'gari) Island Trip I am planning.
      Anyway I just realised I've gone on and on but I don't get to speak to other like minded photographers at all.
      Sorry Greg, I'll leave you to your weekend. Go Lions!!! Hope they get up and Port lose their 4'th in a row to the Cats today so we slip into 2'nd tomorrow IF we win although I don't like our chances in WA as Lions just continue to blow chances of stealing a top 2 spot. Have a good one!

    Only a couple of precisions for your viewers regarding the combination of an adapted manual focus lens and focus peaking: at 1:30 you are referring to front-focus button, which is the how you set your XH1 up but it will not zone-focus or adjust focusing on an adapted manual lens, as you are demonstrating at 9:41, since there is no communication whatsoever with an adapted manual lens. What you are showing at 9:41 is a Fujinon lens mounted on the XH1 set on manual focus mode; the distance metering on the screen gives it away. The lens focal length setting makes a world of difference. Set it to suit your lens, and you can even make your own setting by changing it to match the lens you are using. It lets the IBIS know how to react to that lens. The thickness of the mount makes no difference, just go by the focal length of the lens you are using. Cheers
