When I was around 18, "For the Longest Time" hit the airwaves. My friends and I learned the various harmonies and would drive around for hours singing the song.
So many great songs. He is such a genius. I've been a fan since the 70's and had only in recent years accidently heard And So It Goes on the radio and I was in the car crying. The heartbreak of this song is real.
Every song he wrote is the best, because they are all different lyrically and musically. They touch everyone one way or another because they fit into different moods that we all feel.
When I heard captain jack for the first time, I was waiting in the car with a nice BUZZ as my friends were getting beer.. I still Remember that time.. my favorite song, so vivid
I became a fan of Billy Joel around the age of 10, in ‘83. I was camping with family and this kid around 8 was listening to his music and I was “what is this, it resonated with me”. 40 years on and still and always will be a HUGE fan.
Nice little quick music theory lesson by Billy for Howard on what dissonant and suspended notes are. With quick illustrations. Why we "feel what we feel".
And So It Goes came out in 89' but he had written part of it years before and shelved it. I think this is about his relationship with Elle McPherson before he seriously started dating Christie Brinkley. They lived together in NYC for a while
He spoke openly about that relationship with Howard before. So it wouldn't make sense for him to make Elle anonymous during this interview. So it's very doubtful it's about her. Billy pretty much exclusively dated models, so it can be anyone really.
I have to agree with Billy. In his vast catalogue of wonderful songs (MANY of which I adore), my favorite is “And so it goes”. It speaks such depth and truth.
Agree it's his best song. Utterly superb on every leve, music, lyric arramgement. Aweseom.l. I learned to play piano picking his music apart and his compositions are so sophisticated but the genius is just kinda passes you by but imbues a felling. Beatles had the same thing. Billy Joel is woefully underrated as a composer, he is up there with Paul Simon as one of America's true greats
The before / after with the dissonance in the chords is the best "show, don't tell" version of explaining songwriting I've ever come across. This is my favorite Billy Joel song, as much as I love Vienna.
What you think is his best song *is* what you think is his best song. That’s what differentiates the arts from everything else. It’s up to you and you can’t be wrong.
I think that Billy Joel accommodated Howard Stern in order to illustrate techniques that evoke emotion, but there is no single song of his which outranks every song in his large catalog. This Is The Time is an equally good song on its own in that it is uniquely evocative.
I saw him give a lecture in Princeton about his songwriting and he brought his notebook and it’s a foot thick maybe thicker now. He also said that scenes from…. Was influenced from the Beatles golden slumbers because of the many different parts to it.
THIS WAS/ IS ! MY FAVORITE SONG OF HIS I KNEW WAS SPECIAL THEN , AND NOT KNOWING IT WAS HIS TOO ! TO ME WHEN ONE HEARS SOME A JOEL SONG YOU CAN FEEL THE TOIL AND THE THINKING OF IT .I DONT KNOW EXACTLY WHY BUT I CAN FEEL THE "TOSSING AND TURNING AT NIGHT "AND WHEN HE JUST IN THIS VIDIO TALKS ABOUT IT YOU CAN SEE AND FEEL IT WAS WHAT IT WAS .
Despite (or perhaps because of?) his huge commercial success I think Billy Joel is underrated as a musician/by musicians. He has written some beautiful songs for his albums and this is certainly amongst the best. Stormfront was the last album I bought on vinyl and I have to say I think it is outstanding.
I was pissed a Mr. Joel because he just stopped at his peak ! Yes, I was selfish and not thinking about his feelings or his life. 😢 Over the years I have come to an understanding of this situation . I have to appreciate what he gave us fans . So I say , thank you Billy . Come back anytime you want. 😊
This is about Elle McPherson. "So, I would choose to be with you That's if the choice were mine to make But you can make decisions too And you can have this heart to break"
Hard to beat Scenes from an Italian Restaurant… so many great tunes Billy
Always been my favourite.
That's tops for me, but there are so many to choose from. His latest will no doubt become top three for me.
...and "Movin' Out"
Scenes is the best.
When I was around 18, "For the Longest Time" hit the airwaves. My friends and I learned the various harmonies and would drive around for hours singing the song.
I still love to sing that song. 🙂
Amazing tune…
Billy Joel is the Master of Melancholy. Adore him.
With Billy, there is no “best”, because they’re all great! There are “favorites”.
I agree
This would be true if Scenes didn't exist, might be the best song of all time
one of the best of his...."and you can have this heart to break..." grew up with Billy and still do...
I think he's one of the best musical composers, ever. Massively, massively talented.
I couldn't agree more
The first time I heard “And So It Goes” on the radio I pulled over to listen to it. It is a perfect composition.
Billy Joel is such a genius.
Billy Joel has a song with a mood and a feeling to match every moment in your life.
Absolutely....well put.
Within five seconds of him playing that intro I was in tears. Five seconds, no more!
exactly!
Discordant note - truly captivating
Dissidence and Suspended chords tell the story as much as the words in this song. A masterpiece of music.
Billy Joel is a national treasure........
My favorite Billy Joel song, and in my top 10, of all time. It’s pure genius.

An emotional masterpiece. It just gets you.
He's fascinating. I love hearing about how he wrote songs. And he has so many great ones.
So many classic songs but among my favorite is Vienna

Vienna waits for you
Ridiculously under-known song.
Amazing song
I love so many Billy Joel songs… but this one just captures my heart ❤
He is the ultimate musician - saw him in concert and it was so awesome!❤
Nice little quick music theory lesson by Billy for Howard on what dissonant and suspended notes are. With quick illustrations. Why we "feel what we feel".
One of my favorite songs
So beautifully sad 💙
Its always Incredible to Learn the construction of a familiar song! Lova you Billy
And So It Goes came out in 89' but he had written part of it years before and shelved it. I think this is about his relationship with Elle McPherson before he seriously started dating Christie Brinkley. They lived together in NYC for a while
Yes it is, I believe it is supposed to be released on An Innocent Album.
He spoke openly about that relationship with Howard before. So it wouldn't make sense for him to make Elle anonymous during this interview. So it's very doubtful it's about her. Billy pretty much exclusively dated models, so it can be anyone really.
Allentown is my favorite.
It’s a complete masterpiece. It broke my heart the first time I heard it.
Scenes from an Italian Restaurant is the best song he ever wrote
He could have made 3 songs out of that.
@@cranez006 that's the magic
Yep
Definitely
New York State of Mind is his best song.
This is my favorite song of his!❤
Billy Joel is in a great mood these days!!!
I have to agree with Billy. In his vast catalogue of wonderful songs (MANY of which I adore), my favorite is “And so it goes”. It speaks such depth and truth.
Cant listen to this song without crying.
My favorite song by him...
Mine too, and it's not close. Which is really saying something cause I love a ton of his songs.
And So It Goes is a fantastic song!
One of my favorite songs! 👍💯♥️
Tearful... yet incredibly beautiful. ❤
I miss these interviews!!
Totally agree with Billy. This is his best song.......and I love all his stuff.
Agree it's his best song. Utterly superb on every leve, music, lyric arramgement. Aweseom.l. Listen to the demos of "Rosalinda's Eyes". The first demo is my absolute favorite. That's a musically brilliant mind in the works.
Love that song.
Howard is a superb interviewer…great questions in a conversation form.
I love Allentown because it seems so unique to his catalog.
A killer lyricist.
So many great songs, but the one that hits hard, to me, is Goodnight Saigon.
Allentown
Allentown
Also You're only human
This is my favorite of his as well. Hands down.
And So It Goes is fantastic. I agree that it is his best song, of many great songs....
A literal genius.
“my notebook had a lot of spare parts in it…”. How can you express it any better?
A lovely song. Definitely in my Top Five of Billy Joel songs.
Billy has sooo many great songs. Personally I think Honesty is the best.
The before / after with the dissonance in the chords is the best "show, don't tell" version of explaining songwriting I've ever come across. This is my favorite Billy Joel song, as much as I love Vienna.
His best song is Lullaby. The music, the meaning behind the song and the production make it untouchable imo
Agree
Hell NO
I know that I'm in the minority here but I think his best song is "This is the Time"
Another great song!
Great hook!!
"Downeaster Alexa" is my all-time favorite.
What you think is his best song *is* what you think is his best song. That’s what differentiates the arts from everything else. It’s up to you and you can’t be wrong.
I love that entire album.
Scandinavian Skies is one that sticks out for me. Such a great song.
Agreed. But then - he has so many ...
Yes!
For me it's "New York State of Mind", which is a masterpiece.
Agreed.
Not much of a Billy Joel fan, but this was a great listen. I love how he’s in touch with pianists from the past.
This was my favourite too. Superb song.😢
i love how he explains why and how he wrote these songs
What a brilliant songwriter
UNREAL and beautiful tune!!
By far my favorite billy joel song.
I agree this song is so beautiful

Billy, I know EXACTLY how that feels
Tremendous pianist.
My top Billy Joel song, too.
This guy's a musical genius. I am a musician too, but I wish I had his talent!
Everyone has a Billy Joel's heart song; mine is "Just The Way You Are"
I agree - one of his best
Billy Joel is one of the best songwriters
Writing just one hit is almost a miracle. Writing 50 hits? Truly a 1 in a billion talent.
Probably he is the very best
@@cranez00650 hits???
@@leehaslam5751 33 hit the top 40. 50 hit the top 100.

Elle McPherson
My favourite Billy Joel song.

My favorite song of billy’s is the downeaster alexa
I love to tell my oldest child that she is the way she is because she went to an Elton John/Billy Joel concert a month before she was born.
This IS my favorite Billy Joel song. Sang it as a lullaby for my kids. Hope they don’t have issues later 🤔
Always favored "Tomorrow is Today"
I was pissed a Mr. Joel because he just stopped at his peak ! Yes, I was selfish and not thinking about his feelings or his life. 😢 Over the years I have come to an understanding of this situation . Love it 🥰

SO DAMN INTERESTING. GOOD INTERVIEW, HOWARD!
So Good ❤️🔥
State of grace ...is a killer song.
One of my favorite BJ songs.
For me, there are two really great Billy Joel songs: Baby Grand and Honesty
Stern, you're a great interviewer.
I agree its his best song.
My favorite
And So It Goes… pretty fair choice, considering it’s in my top 10 and my favourite on Storm Front.
‘Sanctuary’ is a great J. Giles Band song… That whole album is amazing 🎉…
Traveling Prayer is the one I'm mostly in awe of.
