+Angie The Killjoy it was actually written 6 years before he released to to Elle McPherson, shortly before meeting Christie Brinkley:) i'm sure you can find the demo of it on RUclips from 1983.
Same for me, after hearing the last phrase which was used in a Boston Legal episode. Just that last phrase and the music...I was hooked. What a hauntingly beautiful song!
The words, the piano chords, are like drops of blood from a heart, a heart that failed.. This song is the saddest, most beautifully, and painfully truthful, of any I have ever heard. He is a genius, of pain.
I was kinda high when I read this comment, while the song was playing, you sort of stole the show for my attention a bit with this comment.. Definitely, in the moment, well done.. thanks.
@@ToddMcKean31 Now I'm pretty neutral on Joel's song here... but in your estimation how is it a rip off off "Hallelujah"?Because they're both quiet songs??
@@BobCat623923 I guess ol Todd went away. AFAIK this song was released before Hallelujah was written. Hallelujah uses a long established chord progression, which is part of the point of the song, and this song uses some of the same ideas.
I have been listening again and again to this song for several hours now. The metering is hymnal. The words: conditional and subjunctive. Transactional at the last plea. It's like an unsent love letter which was accidentally read.
I was listening to this when my girlfriend came in distraught that our beautiful cat ‘Renwee’ had died... He was beautiful, intelligent, and a completely bonkers little guy and we adored him so much. We will never forget him, this track will always help us remember that place and time and just how special he was. It’s not always the human interaction, the loss of our furry, feathered and scaly friends are equally traumatic. We planted a ‘Renwee’ tree soon after we lost him, the sad thing is that it is now almost as tall as my wife, but the positive thing is that we still love and miss him just as much.... we will never forget Renwee and we thank Billy for playing such an important role. Xxx
“And you can have this heart to break.” For me, this song embodies courageous vulnerability. Despite every past loss, I will rise again and open my heart to love again. And again. Come what may. By far my favorite Billy Joel song. Sublime.
Hey hello, I just turned 20 and I'm finding it hard to be vulnerable because I don't see how it's worth it. Can I ask for some advise? This is my situation: I don't think i have a problem with being vulnerable if I know that a person cares for me. The thing is that I usually don't believe people care, I guess I'm kind of cynical, although not 100%. And for that reason I don't see why it's a good idea to "rise again and open my heart again to love". I mean, if nobody cares, there's no point in hoping for love and getting hurt for something that doesn't exist - you'll just be hurt for nothing. If I may ask for your thoughts and advise on this matter, it would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
Played this when my Dad passed. We didn’t have much of a relationship. In the last hours of his life we had a brief moment of understanding. For a minute or two it seems, he recognized my gifts. He had a room too, a sanctuary. I hope he’s at peace.
When this song was on the charts, I had just begun a very precarious relationship, shortly after having been left by my wife... In other words, the song fit my current situation to a "T".
Yep. This lyric is one that stands out not only in this song, but it is one that stands out for me in all music. It is one of the best lyrics I can think of in any song. The vulnerability of love -- captured in a single 8-word line.
I just watched This is Us on my DVR. I always loved this song but it absolutely kicked my ass tonight. I'm a 54 year old man ugly crying at the end of a TV show. It was just so damn visceral. Thanks Billy. RIP Miguel.
He said this is the song of which he was most proud. Who am I to argue with Billy Joel? Just an absolute masterpiece. As an aside, there’s such a lesson in the fact that this is also arguably one of the simplest songs in his entire catalog.
The vulnerability of entering a relationship, and how profoundly we can touch one another has rarely been so poignantly expressed in a song. The tone is soft, but the message so powerful. Billy Joel is an absolute MASTER story teller.
The first time I ever heard that song, And So It Goes, I could identify with it, and I stopped in my tracks like OMG! And I actually began to cry. When I got married I had my brother perform this song at the church, and he had told me, he had such a hard time even rehearsing the song, because he would cry too! It's a very deeply heartfelt song, and honest to his vulnerabilities he felt at that time! Gives you a real idea of his true feelings. There's nothing fake about these lyrics!
This is without a doubt Billy Joel's most beautiful song. There is nothing else he has done that compares with it. It is obviously sad, but so lyrical and moving. Thank you Billy for all the wonderful music you have given us. We can never repay you enough!
Honesty, I've Loved These Days, Leave A Tender Moment Alone, She's Got A Way, Souvenir, Temptation, Through The Long Night. Vienna, Where's The Orchestra and the instrumental Nocturne.
I was dating a girl right after this came out and I could tell she was thinking of breaking up. So one day while having lunch and discussing it, I sang the line "And so it goes...And so it goes. And so will you soon I suppose." Her eyes welled up and I knew it was over. But I still love the song. Memories of my youth - both happy and sad.
Since hearing this song for the first time it’s had a profound affect on me. It took me awhile to grasp the song’s concept but all I had to do was look inward. Love is good, it’s bad, it’s indifferent. When it works it’s invincible. When it doesn’t it’s crippling. Everybody just wants to be loved for who they are. That’s it. Love is about exposing yourself to someone else, warts and all. Taking that leap of faith. Or I should say believing in it enough to take that first step in the first place.
I fell in love with this song when Oliver and Shane dance to this on Signed Sealed and Delivered. I had to search to find it, and I listen to this and other Billy Joel's songs.❤️❤️❤️
I hand not heard this song in a long time...I heard it this week on my favorite show " This is Us". I called my eyes shut! I love this song, first heard it in Onitsha Nigeria when on my way to the Cathedral to get married. My soon to be husband was driving. He stopped at a store to buy cigarettes, and kept car running. This song came on. I don't know if it was a tape, or radio...way back in 1992. I listened to the lyrics. I remembered my husband to be did say to me many times, " you gonna leave me". I never understood why he felt that way! Listening to the lyrics, I thought to my self he must have got the idea from the song. We did get married, but marriage didn't last. Good thing that came from our marriage was our handsome 2 son's. We have 3 beautiful grandchildren from our youngest son. Everytime I hear this song I cry uncontrollably. I love the song, like I loved my husband back then in Ontisha, Nigeria...." And so it goes"❤️🌴🏝️🌴 So, every time
There aren't so many equivalents of Billy Joel in any era.... and bear in mind too that it's not always the best songwriters whose music becomes famous!
I played this song for my girlfriend who in turn ended up becoming my wife. One of my all time favorite Billy Joel songs. “You can have this heart to break.”
This was performed at the memorial service for a young friend of my daughter. I heard it three times that day and now I have the image of Julia in my mind every time I hear it. A beautiful song for a beautiful soul.
I sang in an a capella choir version of this song for the last concert of my senior year in high school. it was an emotional moment that I will never forget.

It has been one year since the death of KAN, a Japanese singer-songwriter who was a great admirer of Billy. Yesterday, a memorial concert was held and this song was played as background music at the venue. This song sounded like a hymn to me. I was very moved. I pray for Billy's blessing on KAN's soul.
When Joel came out in the 70s it was a breath of Fresh air & to me a return to a musical style you could wrap yourself into & of the memories in my life...many relationships that ended so similarly with my own realization that the reason they always ended the same....was me. The song hit me like a ton of bricks and at the same time a silent scream of "mea culpa"

"And you can have this heart to break" is such a powerful sentence, the willingness to offer oneself to the possibility of pain because that is the only way to open up to the possibility of love. I will be singing this with my choir soon.
Yes that's the Hallmark movies I've been watching. Every episode of the Sign Sealed Delivered series leaves me in tears. The stories are deep and endearing. Nice reading your comment....
This could be his greatest composition. Simple but with chords like that. Wow. The crowd can be proud also as I think they really add to the chorus with a smooth topping of choral mellowness. A sheer delight to listen to. He will be an immortal.

This song is amazing. Billy sings it beautifully. No extremeties, no nothing. He just sings through his heart to ours. One of his best performances ever.
I only JUST discovered Billy Joel's song-writing prowess right now on a RUclips journey. I always knew OF him with songs like "Up-town Girl" and "Piano-man". But this and "Just the Way You Are" which I just heard are flawless masterpieces. This... this right here. This is a hymn of the highest calibre.
I heard this beautiful song for the first on the show "This Is Us" this week. They play the most amazing songs! This song is so beautiful & it made me cry. What powerful lyrics! I grew listening to Billy Joel in the 80s but had never heard this song. Glad I know it now. ❤❤
I closed my eyes tonight and just cried. Not only are the lyrics superb (heartache)...but the haunting melody has been my life. I have a fresh start with love....grateful for another chance. ❤
Songs like this make me wonder what's going through their mind as it goes. The crowd disappears, memories of people they've known and places they've been take their place. People they've loved, friends passed on, all return and given tribute through the chords that ring out.
Iconic Billy Joel has many great songs But this one Rises above them all. It is a beautiful Poem With layers and layers of meaning... It is only by breaking one's heart Truly breaking it that one comes to true, pure Humility and in that Humility a Deeper, vast Hall of love Opens up.
A song full of truth. At 70 it resonated with with my past. How many times have I made myself vulnerable and how many times has it brought that mutual love… sometimes ….but even now I still seek … still get hurt but still try. Our hearts are always young
This is positively one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. The purity, the unalloyed aim of the music and lyric together are at the very highest level.
“And every time I’ve held a rose it seems I’ve only felt the thorns”… that line always breaks my heart. Joel wrote this after a breakup yet the words obtain to myriad human events. The melody, itself, owes so much to traditional Celtic folk tunes that always have a touch of sadness about them. So, this choice for “ Miguel’s Story” was a touch of genius.
This song was given to Billy by his angels to influence humanity in a way to wake humanity up to the ways of love. Humanity should be more humble.... In every way. Or, there is no hope.
This is by far his best! I started hearing it on "Signed, Sealed and Delivered" as the theme song. I looked it up and was actually surprised. It matches well with this Hallmark series.
Great song, my wife watched it on Hallmark too. We love the "Signed Sealed Delivered" series so much we bought the whole box set. We watch an episode each evening

"And So It Goes"
In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along
I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense
And every time I've held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose
But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break
And this is why my eyes are closed

Diane Fischer-Stuthmann thank you 😊
He has written a lot of great music but he will NEVER write a song this beautiful again.
His new song, "Turn the Lights Back On" is stiff competition 😊
never say never. he‘s still alive, you know 😊
This song made me bawl my eyes out as it played on Miguel's story on This Is Us. So beautiful!
Christie call me to .I cried like a baby 🥲
That's why I'm here
I've probably listened to this 20 times since they played it on Miguel's episode! It speaks to my heart so well!
@@janetmajor1152 ....Funny thing is this, my wife and I were watching this episode and I fell asleep but this song woke me up.......I had to rewind the show a couple of times and finally pulled the song up on youtube and have played it almost everyday......we "hear' alot of songs but when you can 'feel' the song, its special
It was a GREAT episode…. However it totally makes sense that it would have been a classic song from Billy Joel that brought the well of tears out of my eyes!! I am really going to miss This is US! 💙 Every episode, every season… well done!!
In every heart there is a room
A sanctuary safe and strong
To heal the wounds from lovers past
Until a new one comes along
[Verse 2]
I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense
[Chorus]
And every time I've held a rose
It seems I only felt the thorns
And so it goes, and so it goes
And so will you soon I suppose
[Verse 3]
But if my silence made you leave
Then that would be my worst mistake
So I will share this room with you
And you can have this heart to break
[Chorus]
And this is why my eyes are closed
It's just as well for all I've seen
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows
[Verse 4]
So I would choose to be with you
That's if the choice were mine to make
But you can make decisions too
And you can have this heart to break
[Outro]
And so it goes, and so it goes
And you're the only one who knows
I've always liked Billy Joel's music however I never really listened to this song or knew the lyrics until now- simple, poignant and straight to the heart.
Beautiful
Thank you for taking the time and trouble to post the lyrics just fantastic
Holy shit, that 3rd verse really hit home
Thanks ..❤
He must have really been in pain when he wrote this. You can hear the agony in his voice. Just so real.
Brian Vetter i cry for a day every time i listen to this song
Max Baum Me too
+Brian Vetter he wrote this to his ex- long term girlfriend
+Angie The Killjoy it was actually written 6 years before he released to to Elle McPherson, shortly before meeting Christie Brinkley:) i'm sure you can find the demo of it on RUclips from 1983.
He's said that he wrote it due to his relationship with Elle McPherson.
This song and This Night were written about her.
One of my exes played this song for me. When we broke up, I played this song countless times and cried silently. There's not another song like it.
This may be the most underrated song of all time. How have I only discovered this now?
Isn't it a great song?
But discover it you did!
I don't know, but this may be Hallelujah part 2
Same for me, after hearing the last phrase which was used in a Boston Legal episode. Just that last phrase and the music...I was hooked. What a hauntingly beautiful song!
Because it's now that you need it
It blows me away that the same artist that wrote 'we didn't start the fire' constructed this absolute master piece that goes straight for your heart.
The words, the piano chords, are like drops of blood from a heart, a heart that failed.. This song is the saddest, most beautifully, and painfully truthful, of any I have ever heard. He is a genius, of pain.
Alan oooo sorry
I was kinda high when I read this comment, while the song was playing, you sort of stole the show for my attention a bit with this comment.. Definitely, in the moment, well done.. thanks.
"Melodrama's so much fun.....in black and white for everyone to see!!" Your post made me think of that line instantly.
+Randel Urbano What a beautiful description!

Randel Urbano ...dude...just close your eyes, open your ears and heart and enjoy.
Did he write the melody? I have a feeling he didn't. But it's a beautiful song.
My favorite Billy Joel song as well
I was listening to this when my girlfriend came in distraught that our beautiful cat ‘Renwee’ had died... Xxx
Beautiful but sad story. RIP Renwee from a cat lover and Billy Joel fan
@@antrivers46 Likewise, from another cat lover and Billy Joel fan.
This is one of the best songs that has ever been written. Billy Joel at his heartbreaking best.
It's a simp song. A man should never allow himself to be so vulnerable to the unstable female.
@@fairplayer7435 such a chad ✋😬
I cry every time I hear this. But I keep listening over and over. Powerfully vulnerable.😢
This isn't a song... It's the world's most beautiful poem...
"... So I will share this room with you, and you can have this heart to break..."
I completely agree, and I search the earth for songs like this
“And you can have this heart to break.” For me, this song embodies courageous vulnerability.
This is my situation:
I don't think i have a problem with being vulnerable if I know that a person cares for me.
Thanks!
That line, it’s a killer. It’s the ultimate sacrifice because you love somebody so much that you would offer that.
This a religious hymnal as only Billy could write it.Confessional and heartfelt
Played this when my Dad passed. We didn’t have much of a relationship. In the last hours of his life we had a brief moment of understanding. For a minute or two it seems, he recognized my gifts. He had a room too, a sanctuary. I hope he’s at peace.
Probably he just read your notes,,,🥲
I hope that you are at peace too.
I feel certain your dad would want that for you.

That's a wonderful thing to think about. I'm sure you're right. 🙂
"And you can have this heart to break...." gives me chills. What a beautiful lyric.
My favorite line from the song. Had it happen not so long ago.
The vulnerability of love -- captured in a single 8-word line.
to think, 6 years later i read this comment literally as it was being sung. That is why i like the internet.
I just watched This is Us on my DVR. I always loved this song but it absolutely kicked my ass tonight. I'm a 54 year old man ugly crying at the end of a TV show. It was just so damn visceral. Thanks Billy. RIP Miguel.
I was ugly crying too. I was sobbing 4 minutes into the show. By the end of show. I was a complete mess!😭😭😭
Me too!
That was a rough one 😢
It's a tv show stupid
well said my friend..
My mothers love for Billy has brought me here and bonded us. This has been a favorite of mine for over 25 years.
*My mother is Elle Macpherson. I love this song.*
One of the greatest song writers of all time. Fact. :)
I agree
This is one of billy Joel's top 5 favorite songs he wrote
That's an opinion.
@@salrusso1233 yeah i saw that interview where he said this
This song was beautifully used in tonight's episode of This Is Us.
Just saw him in concert tonight. He was amazing. He didn't sing this song though which was a bummer. But just as well to not cry.
Perfectly put.
Scott Russell.....you could not have been more right......
The most beautiful sadness ever set to music.....
It's almost everything....
Sooooooooooo true. Every song has one. Every. Single. Song. And I love it.
These are the real Musicians! Shit , I need a mop and Bucket for my tears!
*car gets towed* And so it tows
i agree, sad song
+odia julius So very true Odia. True/real musicians purely speak from their heart and soul.
me too man, me too.
How can we (humans) draw down beauty out of nowhere and project it into the hearts and souls of those around us? Aren't we amazing animals?
This is without a doubt Billy Joel's most beautiful song. There is nothing else he has done that compares with it. It is obviously sad, but so lyrical and moving. Thank you Billy for all the wonderful music you have given us. We can never repay you enough!
Its really beautiful. So also is lullaby. Both very beautiful

So I .
Just beautiful
She left me after depression was taking over and I’d isolate myself “if my silence made you leave” will 10/10 times make my eyes tear up
I was dating a girl right after this came out and I could tell she was thinking of breaking up. So one day while having lunch and discussing it, I sang the line "And so it goes...And so it goes. And so will you soon I suppose." Her eyes welled up and I knew it was over. But I still love the song. Memories of my youth - both happy and sad.
That made my eyes well up. Bittersweet.
That is the best way to end a relationship. Beautiful words from a beautiful song
Bittersweet :')
Nice story 👍 pitty it was a sad ending for you both.
:) i have no other words but, insperational
Since hearing this song for the first time it’s had a profound affect on me. It took me awhile to grasp the song’s concept but all I had to do was look inward. Love is good, it’s bad, it’s indifferent. When it works it’s invincible. When it doesn’t it’s crippling.
Everybody just wants to be loved for who they are. That’s it.
Love is about exposing yourself to someone else, warts and all. Taking that leap of faith.
Or I should say believing in it enough to take that first step in the first place.
"Everybody just wants to be loved for who they are. That’s it."
Says it all.
I fell in love with this song when Oliver and Shane dance to this on Signed Sealed and Delivered. I had to search to find it, and I listen to this and other Billy Joel's songs.❤️❤️❤️
@@lorainelambert8548 Yes same here. I’ve just discovered Signed Sealed Delivered in New Zealand. This song is absolutely beautiful.
Crippling is the word.
wow, so nicely written
I love the song, like I loved my husband back then in Ontisha, Nigeria...." And so it goes"❤️🌴🏝️🌴
So, every time

Ricky Gervais is beyond talented. I cried much during 'After Life'.......and then there is 'Derek'. True creative energy there!
It was wonderfully compatible. :')

Yup - guilty as charged! Love this song.
Yes. So beautiful
They don't make enough music like this now a-days.
*Justin Beiber starts singing in the distance*
There aren't so many equivalents of Billy Joel in any era.... and bear in mind too that it's not always the best songwriters whose music becomes famous!
They don't make ANY music like this anymore (sadly).

This is my favorite Billy Joel song, and I'm grateful to "This Is Us" (5/3/22) for giving it new life.
One of the most beautiful songs Billy ever did…
I played this song for my girlfriend who in turn ended up becoming my wife. One of my all time favorite Billy Joel songs. “You can have this heart to break.”
This was performed at the memorial service for a young friend of my daughter. I heard it three times that day and now I have the image of Julia in my mind every time I hear it. A beautiful song for a beautiful soul.
When the audience starts singing along with you, it's magical. But then, this is Billy Joel. He IS magical.
Thank you Miguel, for your selfless part in This is Us. Rest easy, you won our hearts in the end.
Fantastic usage of this classic.
Ultimate vulnerability and complete self-sacrifice, especially in that final verse.
I sang in an a capella choir version of this song for the last concert of my senior year in high school. it was an emotional moment that I will never forget.
we started doing it today in my choir and i was hit like a truck with how good and deep this song is

The saddest song written bravo Billy bravo
It has been one year since the death of KAN, a Japanese singer-songwriter who was a great admirer of Billy. Yesterday, a memorial concert was held and this song was played as background music at the venue. This song sounded like a hymn to me. I was very moved.
I pray for Billy's blessing on KAN's soul.
The TV series "This Is Us" bought me here this evening with the "Miquel" episode and this song playing near the end of the episode. Just beautiful
My favorite song of all time.. Brings a tear to my eye every time.
The way he chose to voice these chords with that dissonance is beautiful.
if there are better songs than this they haven't been written yet
How about Thotiana?

He said this was the composition he was most proud of.
"And you can have this heart to break" is such a powerful sentence, the willingness to offer oneself to the possibility of pain because that is the only way to open up to the possibility of love. I will be singing this with my choir soon.
This song had been used in several of the Hallmark “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” movies. The song is used perfectly.
Very much so.
Derian Jones: I agree totally! This song is so heart felt, extraordinary and simple, all at the same time. If there was ever a definition in the dictionary as to what a well written song should sound like, this song would be "Exhibit A" for real! Thanks to the piano man himself, for a great song/performance. Enjoy! Cheers, Sam.
Goodnight My Angel would be my pick, but also She's Got A Way About Her. But then...with his repertoire, how does one choose?
Derian Jones is this similar to The Lulaby for his daughter? The 2 songs remind me of each other.
I think personally that Souvenir is quite possibly his best work, but this comes very close in my opinion.
Tbh it's difficult to pick one.

Me too Lori. God bless you.

Billy Joel has many great songs
But this one
Rises above them all.
It is a beautiful
Poem
With layers and layers of meaning...
It is only by breaking one's heart
Truly breaking it
that one comes to true, pure Humility
and in that Humility
a Deeper, vast Hall of love
Opens up.
One of the greatest songs. I so love it.
I LOVE this man's music. He is not only a musician, he is a poet. His words, combined with just the right melody and harmony, hit me right in my core.
Yes!
I just watched "This is Us" and I stopped to find Billy Joel's song. I just listened to it and yes, I was weeping. Love his music and his voice.
What a song... .i love Billy Joel ❤️
This song makes me feel the sorrows from the years deep in my bones.
This song was given to Billy by his angels to influence humanity in a way to wake humanity up to the ways of love. Humanity should be more humble.... In every way. Or, there is no hope.
That's beautiful
This is by far his best! I started hearing it on "Signed, Sealed and Delivered" as the theme song. I looked it up and was actually surprised. It matches well with this Hallmark series.
Great song, my wife watched it on Hallmark too. We love the "Signed Sealed Delivered" series so much we bought the whole box set. We watch an episode each evening
Marti Cabral, that's how I found it, too! One of the most hauntingly beautiful songs I've ever heard.
