Lyrics:
Goodnight, my angel
Time to close your eyes
And save these questions for another day
I think I know what
You've been asking me
I think you know
What I've been trying to say
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away

My daddy sang this to all five of us kids. He was killed October 5th 2010 at just 42 years old. We played it at his funeral and I finally understood the meaning of it that day. On his headstone it says “Some day we’ll all be gone but lullabies go on and on.” I was just 16 when he was taken from me. Now I just rocked my very own son to sleep to this song. I love you daddy you’re always in my heart!💜
I'm so sorry. My dad died at 39 and my brother killed 4 years later at 17. I think I know a bit of what you're feeling. Hold on to those memories and cherish that son. I, too, was blessed with one a year later. Much love.
@@dsmith7189 same to you Deanna. Its horrible how much you’ve been through. I’m so sorry.
My birthday 🥳
Such a sad loss but you had the gift of a very loving Father
@@user-mu7bz6lr1j absolutely the greatest gift was loving parents! after my daddy passed away us siblings used to say we were robbed but one day after enough healing, i realized i was never robbed, in fact we hit the jackpot with our father. his life was cut short but i dont have one bad memory of my daddy and my siblings dont either! thats pretty dang lucky if you ask me, considering some have never met their father or only have terrible memories. I thank God for my daddy and his life no matter if it was cut short.
Far and away the most underrated Billy Joel song ever
Turtle HeadLyfe I will have to disagree so it goes takes that title chief
Certainly is!
Could not agree more. We buried my dad this morning and Billy Joel was one of his favorites - we played this song as an integral part of his service.
So beautiful ❤️

I remember hearing this song when I was 16 and thinking how I couldn't wait to sing it to my future daughter. 24 years later, on August 19th, baby Amelia was born and today I sang it to her for the first of many times. :)
Update: My precious daughter is now 3 1/2 and I sing it to her every time I put her to bed. We have the story book and she always asks to sing "Goodnight My Angel."
❣❣
Wow, I'm 15 and the weird thing is that, I too, definitely want to sing this song to my future children. :)
@@christianlopez4088 same 15 and this song hits me right in the feels
My dad used sing this to me as a baby
I'm 17 and that was my exact thought when I heard this song.
I sang this song rocking my daughter to sleep at night 26 years ago and tonight she is rocking my first grandaughter to sleep to the same sing ....my heart is full.
Wow, the song is beautiful and emotional..
I love it
Beautiful song 🎵 ❤❤
Wow, that's amazing 😘
Amazing! I just had the same beautiful surprise. My daughter is 22 and imagine the emotions as a mom came up when I walked in her room she was humming her daughter this song. Thanks for sharing!!
I have played this for my daughter since she was born. She's almost 10 now.
Recently, my mother fell very ill and from diagnosis to the day she passed away, it was six short months. I've never known my mother to fear anything. I was with her everyday for the last three weeks of her life. She asked me to play "Liv's song". I played this for her every night. I also played it right after she passed away, peacefully at home.
It's got a whole new meaning to me now. None the less, it's an important part of my own life's soundtrack.
Goodnight sweet angel, I'll see you on the other side, mom. Forever love.
That sucks... If I were to ever die before my mommy, I'd hope for this song to play. (I'm 12 and I'm calling my mom 'mommy', guess I just miss her that much)
I'm very sorry for your loss😭
its ok to miss her, I am sure she was a wonderful mother... your memories are gods way of keeping her close to you..just remember , I know she is watching over you and protecting you.and I also know she loves you very much...god speed...
Heather Parodi ....I read your comment. ... I believe in Love Sis, I believe in strength Sis ... definitely a tear jurker. . a few sincere of my eyes from my Heart SisterStranger ... God Bless you and your family.. Love and Strength to you all . And thank you for sharing .
So sad and so precious of you to post this! I want this song played at my funeral, dedicated to my husband, the love of my life, and I want him to take the words to heart. Though I may be "asleep," I, like your mother, will "always be a part of" of them.
My Father died on December 27th, 1994. As I was leaving the hospital after identifying his body, this is the song that came up on the CD. I hadn’t ever heard it, because the CD was new to me and it hadn’t gotten to this cut.
When it started to play, the car got very warm and I felt like I was being hugged. I had to pull over on the Capital Beltway in the DC area, and I started crying uncontrollably. It was my Father coming back and telling me that he loved me, and that he would always be with me. Even the Emerald Bay was the Chesapeake Bay, where we had a house when I was young.
In about 20 months, it will be 30 years since this happened, and still I am brought to uncontrollable sobs by this song. Each time I hear it, I know that he is with me, although I am 60 years old and have a grown son now (named after him) that he never got to meet. This is our song, and it will be my song to my son when it is my time to go. Thank you, Billy Joel. You have given this world a LOT of good, but this song was divinely inspired, and had brought healing and comfort to so very many of us. Your robe in heaven is set, in no small measure, because of this.
Beautiful Story and thanks for sharing. Best to you always, Bill

I just left the hospital where I played this for my mother while she is in hospice and they said her passing is imminent. I’m shattered. She has made it through so much, end stage COPD, stage 6 Alzheimer’s, now she has a huge mass. She doesn’t have long and I just don’t know how I am going to make it through her loss. "Yes, love. Why?"
"Because this song is sad."
"Sweetie. Sometimes, things are sad but beautiful. So, even if you cry, it doesn't mean the song is not beautiful."

There is no shame in crying at this amazingly beautiful song.
I love everything about this song. Billy's story of the song is that his daughter asked him "what happens when we die?" Billy is an admitted atheist, so his answer is this song. Basically we live in other people's thoughts and in that way, we never disappear. Beautiful.
wesj1989 thank you soo much for that golden tidbit of knowledge!!💕 Because I knew it was for his daughter but knew there was some missing info👍 My Uncle is a huge fan of his but is the youngest of my mothers 9 siblings. We are so close in age that he confessed to me he hated being called Uncle Tom because I was more a sister to him and a lil sister. I looked up to him and he sang Billy Joel beautifully! He’s not just an uncle but in a non weird way a brother and bestfriend💕 Thanks much🙏
👋✌️
That’s a pretty common misconception. Billy wrote Lullaby for his daughter Alexa as his and Christie’s marriage was ending. It’s written perfectly for what its purpose was. “...and you should always know
Wherever you may go, no matter where you are
I never will be far away.”
@@MrDbrizzle It was actually a combination of the deteriorating marriage and alexa's question about death. I'm sure you can search it on youtube there is a Q&A in which he explicits says as such.
Shame he’s an atheist
@@PaulEastham No shame of being an atheist. It is an honor because he is fully human full of emotions n feelings.

I lost two of my darling little kitties, my Rachel, who was 22 yrs old when she passed, and my Marie, who was 21 when she passed. I heard in an interview that Billy wrote this song for his daughter in a sad period in his life right before the divorce from Christie Brinkley. Heartbroken to leave his daughter, he wanted to let Alexa know that although he'd be away from her more, she was always in his heart and he was always in this song..
I remember, when I was just out of highscool, I was in the other room when I heard my mom play this song for my dad, who was in the late stages of early-onset Alzheimer's, to try to calm him down enough to go to sleep. I remember in that moment feeling heartbroken for my mom who was now losing her partner at a rate quicker than ever. He finally succumbed to the disease not too long after. Almost 10 years later, I just played this song for my 3-month-old daughter and it put her right to sleep. Now here I am, shedding tears of pure love ❤️

I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away
Goodnight, my angel
Now it's time to sleep
And still so many things I want to say
Remember all the songs you sang for me
When we went sailing on an emerald bay
And like a boat out on the ocean
I'm rocking you to sleep
The water's dark
And deep inside this ancient heart
You'll always be a part of me
Goodnight, my angel
Now it's time to dream
And dream how wonderful your life will be
Someday your child may cry
And if you sing this lullabye
Then in your heart
There will always be a part of me
Someday we'll all be gone
But lullabyes go on and on...
They never die
That's how you
And i
Will be

My dad passed away unexpectedly late last year, and the thing that always brought us (him, my sister, and I) together the most was Billy's music. Lullaby was our song. When I was 7, Dad took me to my first ever concert--Billy Joel, of course! Billy played Lullaby that night. Dad and I went on to see him together 2 more times before his passing. Now, anytime Lullaby comes on, I feel like it's my dad stopping by to say hi. I can't wait to see Billy perform again in Nashville in May. Dad may not be physically there with me, but he will certainly be there in my heart. Thanks for the gift of your music, Billy!

Pamela Martin Hello PAMELA
A very beautiful song. And nobody sings it better than Billy Joel.
After I spoke at my daughter's wedding, I had the DJ play this song, surprising my daughter.
Prior to her wedding I had suffered two heart attacks. The second putting me in cardic-arrest, and a coma.
These were not due to smoking, eating badly, or drinking. It was stress, honest. Life will do that.
So, when I heard this song it meant so much to me as a message for her.
I thank you Billy Joel, from a fellow Long Islander.
:)
That's so sweet. Made me tear up a little. :)
+joseph anthony I had this played at my Wedding also. My Dad died from a work accident at 2:30 pm on Friday, March 29, 1996. He was 45 years old and I was 17. I miss him everyday and I still remember his face, since most people say it fades eventually. But most of all, I miss his hugs and will always remember when I was little, him tucking me into bed and whispering in my ear, "Daddy loves you," then kissing me on my forehead. I managed to cause everyone at my wedding to cry, lol. Be careful with your health, your little girl needs you, whether she knows it or not.
oh... abra. What you did was so beautiful. And i fully understand why.
My mom died when I was 22 years old. Three months after I married. She had cancer and had to lay in a lounge chair at the wedding.
Her face has not faded from me yet. I won't let it. So, do the same for your dad.
And yes, I will stay around as long as I am able to enjoy the things I wish she could have.
+joseph anthony both you & abra are making me tear up. But she's right about something. My Dad died when I was 37. Now I'm 53 & I'm still picking up the phone to call & tell him about 1 thing or another. Your daughter needs you. You've had 2 close calls. Please-take a ton of photos. Tell her all your stories. And always give her just 1 more hug. Bless you both!
nodak01 Thank you nodak01 for sharing that with us. Sorry for making you cry. I know how you feel. My Dad was the first man I ever met and he really was my hero. I even remember being asked when I was little, around 3 years old or so, who I would marry when I grew up, and I innocently said, "I'm gonna marry Daddy when I grow up." He was the one I modeled and wanted to be like. I love my Mom, but my Dad was the one who just got me and I felt closer to him then my Mom, even though I was close to her to, but she didn't understand me as well as him. I will never stop missing him and his face is still clear in my memory and hasn't faded, like people say it eventually does. I think that only happens when you literally let go and move on, but when you truly love someone and miss them, I think that their face never fades. I hope you are doing well and that nothing has happened to cause you to still be in grief, like bottling it up for years and then having to grieve later because you haven't yet. That happened to me, that's why I hope you are not in the same situation, because it causes problems that can stack pain on top of pain, and I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Anyway, I appreciate your understanding and empathy. It is really kind and I don't feel so alone. Sending you big HUGS, because I miss them the most from my Dad.
Mothers , Fathers, and parents all over the world over: We LOVE you.
What a blessing this song is. My babies are all grown up now [35 & 37] and I couldn't love them anymore than I do. and they have kids too. Life is so amazing. Thank the Lord for the joy our children bring to us. we can take it with us when we leave this life.

Good night everyone. Sweet dreams, peace, love and happiness.💕😘🥰
This song always got to me, but it's especially more powerful now. I'm a father, and still reeling from the loss of both my parents: My dad to cancer, mom to a stroke.
Sending you love and light, friend
Sorry about your parents. They're the only people who've known you your whole life... Mine are gone too - Mom, 30 years ago, and Dad about 15 years ago. I still miss them - it doesn't hurt as much, but I still miss them. Good luck and ❤

Has anyone else heard the version that Leanne Ryme did for the Billy Joel tribute concert? If that version doesn’t make you cry then you have no heart.
I sang this song to our daughter 30 years ago when she was born and our son 28 years ago. It was our ritual at bed or nap time. Today, I got to sing it for our first grand baby
My lyrical dance as a kid. My dad wasn’t around as a kid and I always was so jealous that dads like this existed but such a beautiful song.

Beautyfull❤ our yongest son is past away last year, and this song make me melangolish❤😢
Our son Luke died at 6 weeks old in Oct 2018. We asked family to pick songs to remember and honour his short life. My aunt picked this song and I had never heard it before. I listen to Lukey's beautiful spotify playlist everyday and this is my favourite song. Always makes me feel like its written for him and brings me some relief from the grief. Rip Lukey love from Dada, Mama, Twin brother Jack and little bro bro Ryan. xo

My future children had better get ready for mommy's terrible singing voice because I'll sing this to them every night. Thank you for this beautiful song #BillyJoel! 💖
Dee Dee My son is quite a little musician, and LOVES Billy Joel. We happily sing together, and he says "Mom, you're off tune" lol. He wants to learn this one :)
Rosemarie Percario Aww that's so sweet! :) That's something he'll remember for the rest of his life!
+Dee Dee Every mother's voice is beautiful to her children!
bmiltonb Yes I suppose you're right! It's been said that babies become used to the sound of their mothers voice and it can sometimes offer instant comfort to them. 😊
+Dee Dee
I sang it to my children every night, until I was crying to much to sing
We played this song in marching band we had a trombone soloist sing the melody. People legit came out of the stadium crying because how beautiful it was.

We played this at my husbands funeral in 2015. When i play it i get tears in my eyes. Sally Ghatauray.
LIfetime Billy Joel fan, I used to play this song when I was younger, I need to find the sheet music again now that I'm getting back into piano years later. I brought up this video because I just finished singing my 3-year-old daughter to sleep with a mixture of Joel & Sinatra. I finished with this but couldn't keep all the verses straight. Beautiful song, beautiful video. I had floor seats for a Billy Joel concert 2 months ago, my 4th or 5th time seeing him live, I hope it wasn't the last.
You should try a website called Musescore if you're looking for free sheet music

One of the most beautiful songs ever
Im sorry for everyone that ever played this song at a Funeral
My dad listened to this song before and I was happy. Now I'm crying in front of his grave.
As the father of a 12 year old daughter I need to send a warning to new dads of daughters... dont rush it. If I could go back in time to these bedtime moments, I'd let her stay up forever so the day never ended. Once the day ends, thats it. Its over. You'll never get that day back. No matter how much money you have or how strong you are. I regret the nights I rushed bedtime just because "I have a lot of work to do, I'm tired and just want to go to bed." Today id trade all my sleep and all the money I made to have one more night of songs, stories, prayers, laughs, hugs and kisses.

My daughter is getting married in 2 days and everything you said went through my mind today. Be in the moment when your kids are little, it passes so fast. How I wish I could go back to another day at the beach or a bedtime story.
@@RidgeMeadows1 congratulations on your daughter's wedding!

I am not an emotional person, and every time this darned song comes on I have to work not to shed tears. Billy Joel at his finest, IMHO. The transition at that bridge is to die for, THAT is music. It is always obvious when a performer is baring his or her soul, and it is often when they are at their best. One exquisite piece of music Mr. Joel, no question, and my favorite lullaby, hands down. I predict this song will live on and be loved for millennia, if we exist that long.
How are you doing today my name is Eric moore
Totally agree John S. Well said.
You sir, hit it right on the mark, the transition at the bridge is takes one all the way there!
The lyrics kill me, my daughter is 7 now and l put her to bed as she prefers me to her dad as l answer all the bed time questions, but I'm acutely aware my weary nights of bedtime cuddles and long goodnight blowing kisses and catching those air kisses so they can go into my heart will all come to end one day soon and I'll be heart broken, she'll be a teen crushing on boys and our night time ritual probably won't be like it is now. It physically pains me, but that is life.
Why do you work not to shed tears? Why not just let your tears fall? If you aren't emotional, but this song brings those emotions to the surface, then why not respect what's deep within you that identifies so strongly with this song? I think both you and this song are worth that much. 🫂
Billy Joel is one of this world's greatest poets. He is up there with many others. Difference is he means what he has written and this is conveyed in this particular tune. Thanks Billy.
My Dad picked 5 songs for my Mom’s memorial video. The lyrics to this hit me hard. My Mom has been gone 7 months. She our Angel now.
Its right there with "Cats in the Cradle" If you have children it takes on a meaning that is hard to describe otherwise. Being a parent and having lost a parent this song hits a nerve. I cant listen to it without sobbing. Songs like this make Billy Joel so amazing.
Its so brilliant and raw and honest and real and beautiful.
If the Forest Gump producers added this....omg.
Thank you Billy and Alexa♡
So true!
Hello how are you doing?
This was the wedding song for my dauther -father dance 2 years ago and she suddenly and unexpectedly passed away a few days ago from a rare heart condition, now our life is beyond shattered. This song will now be played at her funeral service. We were a huge music familiy and this will forever be the most important, hurtfully and joyfull song of all time for this devastated father. Thank you Billy for this incredibale song. GOODNIGHT MY ANGEL....
I am thinking of you and your family and wish you peace and strength. Love from Germany
OMG. I can't begin to imagine. And I couldn't listen to this song without tearing up before reading this. I hope your heart has mended at least the tiniest bit in the five months since you wrote this. I'm not sure how anything could be more devastating than losing a child, or spouse.
You know, I hope, that if she could have voiced it, or could now, she would want you to live out your life in peace, and remember her lovingly. Completely inadequate words, I realize, but they are offered in the humble hope that they might help in at least the minutest bit.
Losing my mother and in laws was about the worst I've experienced so far, and for what it's worth, I can say that the more time since the loss, the less pained and more happy the majority of the remembrances seem to become. I smile more and cry less when they occur. Sympathies.
I almost erased this entire thing before posting it. I hope I made the right decision in choosing not to.
Hope time heals your heart. Sorry for your loss ❤️

I've been a fan since 9 years old, and Billy is still my favorite of all time. even above mercury, jackson, and elton
Yes. My father was a fan, and so I became one too as a child. Billy Joel will always be my absolute favourite. Everything he sings about has meaning and touches an aspect of the human condition.
Red Deer well said
In my eyes Billy Joel is the greatest musician of all time. Even greater than Bach himself.
I’ve been a fan since I was much younger, closer to 4 or 5, and this was the first song I ever heard him sing, apparently it would always put me to sleep as a child
Mine too. My dad raised me on a variety of music. Billy Joel remains my favorite artist and song writer.

Hasn't heard this song in years. Used to Sing it to my children. Saw it on Zoey and it was really touching. Probably best lullabye ever written. Should be more popular
Me, too
Lost my Mum 3 days before my Birthday in August. We used to listen to Billy Joel while doing puzzles. The line that hits me "I think I know what you've been asking me, I think you know what I've been trying to say. I promised I would never leave you and you should always know, wherever you may go, no matter where you are I will never be far away." The day she passed, she was asking me what I wanted to do for my Birthday. Well I wish to see both you and Dad just one more time.
To see you happy and together again, happy, that is my dream and wish. I hot through Thanksgiving and just hoping we can manage Christmas without you both. The family, the people who came that had no family. You both had the biggest hearts. I did it too for awhile, but this being the first year without you Mom....well I am going to hear you singing this song, even though you couldn't carry a tune. LOL, you will both be a part of me.❤😢😢
It is the one song he wrote that will stand the test of time.

My dad & I danced to this song at my wedding 10 years ago. I surprised him with it because he told me it came on the radio after he dropped me off at college & it got to him so deeply he had to pull over. I lost him in 2019 & in 2020 was able to get a tattoo done in his handwriting where he wrote me a letter in 1989 with the last sentence saying “a part of me.”

My son hasn’t been born yet, but this is one song I will play for him. ❤️

As a 1980s kid on Long Island, I grew up with Billy Joel. While I enjoy many of his albums and songs, this is by FAR the most personal for me on many levels.

Just finished reading several ppl's post of who this song reminds them of or that it was played for a wedding, or a funeral, etc.. As for me, it reminds me so much of my late Grandpa, he was my second Dad, bc my own Dad was a merchant seaman, and worked away from home for many months out of the year.. My Grandpa was a WWII & Korean War Veteran.. He was a man w/ few words, but his mannerisms and strong loving characteristics spoke volumes, on so many levels. Grandpa taught me how to value myself and to be a hard worker, and to take pride in all I do, whether it was a small or great task. He was a great cook, and would humm his one acapella random song melodies when playing cards. I miss him so so much! 😓🙏❤️

everyone in the comment section has some amazing story but when i hear this song it reminds me of mf little cousin! he’s only two years younger than me and we’ve grown up together we’re both only children so we’re basically siblings to eachother…we’ve both been through tons of mental abuse and depression in our life but we’ve always helped eachother i love him forever >3
My favorite Billy Joel song, followed by "She's Only a Woman to Me." Another wonderful Jewish songwriter...standing on the shoulders of some amazing ones in America like Irving Berlin.
"Close your eyes and dream how wonderful your life will be".
Beautiful lyrics and song😎👍
