    Love my RV12, but I think this may be my next! Love the looks of the taildragger. The extra fuel capacity and cabin width. It's just about perfect. I'll stick with Rotax. Just not sure if it'll be the 912is or 915is.

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад +2

      Yup, so cool to see a modernized Tailwind. Definitely multiple engine options, but Sonex is using the 912is in the One Week Wonder build next year. Lessons learned from that will find their way to the High Wing for sure.

    Can’t wait to build one! Luckily the newest reveal of the RV15 has shown that the RV is an ugly copy of the Murphy Rebel. If Sonex can make the high wing look as good as the renderings, then they will have a solid winner here!

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад

      Yup, same here! Vans announcement last year had Sonex announce their High Wing sooner. I wonder if the "Vurphy" footage will do the same... 🤔

    Flying is so far out of my financial envelope that I've considered ultralights. I've been a fan of what Sonex dose since back in the Sonari days. The new high wing looks great! Kind of a Whitman Tailwind.

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  Год назад +1

      I hear ya! My financial situation changed since this interview and I've been keeping one eye on ultralights as well. (Sold my Sonex and saving up money to hopefully build one of these. ) See if there's any ultralight fields near you, might be one for sale for a good price or somebody who knows somebody who's selling.

    It's got a lot of tailwind DNA!! Sould be fast and efficient.

    Bubble doors was an option I hoped they would go for and it sounds like they are considering it. Also glad to hear they hope to improve the design with the wing removal. I really would like to be able to have it where I could store the plane in my garage. I can only imagine what hangar rent will be in California in 3 years. Great interview and look forwards to hearing more 👍

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад +1

      Yup, Sonex has learned a lot over the years and works improvements into new iterations. Bubble doors add even more flexibility for big guys like me. Right there with ya on storage, my hangar is pretty cheap for now, but you could easily store another aircraft and split the cost, or like you said, keep it in the garage. Wonder if it could come with a trailer like the SubSonex.... I had a 2+ hour conversation with Mark yesterday, so definitely more coming from it.

      @@LeftSeatAdventures I’d probably build the Y tail tri-gear version. With the Y tail, it might make for an easier trailer arrangement with the wings and fuse. Plus I think a high wing Y tail is just so unique. I’ve never seen one before and it looks so cool. Any idea how far in the future that EAA webinar may be? I’m really hooked on this plane!

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад +2

      @@3dfoamies No clue on the webinar, I'm expecting there'll be a Hornet's Nest email. If you plan on using an enclosed trailer, the tail will sit higher with either as a tricycle gear. But the tri gear is easier to secure regardless. I've always loved the look of the Y Tail, but since I'd want to fly it to Alaska, I'd probably go conventional. But that's assuming the conventional tail has more rudder authority in a stiff crosswind. I honestly don't know, got 2+ years to sort it out though.

    All those guys were good to talk to when I went to Oshkosh this year. I am excited to watch this project evolve but I am still in the low wing camp.

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад +2

      Bah, low wings! 🤣🤣🤣 It'll be interesting to fly both and see what I prefer day to day. But it really depends on mission, if I'm flying gravel strips in AK, I'd rather have a high wing, but the low wing is just fine for my everyday needs. Although, polished low wings act like a big tanning bed when you're flying, something to consider. If I were building one now, I'd paint the wings.

    • @weekendhack.whatsnext
      @weekendhack.whatsnext 2 года назад +1

      @@LeftSeatAdventures High wing is definitely better for bush flying. You will have to take me up in that high wing when you get it built. I was planning on painting my Waiex B but started to think about leaving some polished for weight. I may have to re reconsider that now. LOL

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад +1

      Sounds like a plan on the flight! Wrap around sunglasses or visors help, but you do get extra face burn from the polished wings. Don't know if vinyl would be lighter than paint...

  • @5xls
    @5xls 2 года назад +1

    I wonder if the center armrest will be removable for sitting in the center for solo flight?

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад

      My gut says no because of the control setup, but I really don't know. I think that's part of why the center console would exist. Of course, as the builder, you could probably work that out. Maybe a "booster seat" over it for those moments? It'd be a good question when they do the webinar for the High Wing.

  • @ravenfeather09
    @ravenfeather09 2 года назад +2

    would be nice if the wings are foldable much like kitfox

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад +1

      I agree, that is my preferred way of doing it. Instead, the removable wing sections then need a cradle or some other method of storage to prevent damage. I wonder if they'll offer a purpose built trailer for the High Wing like they do with the Subsonex... 🤔

    I LOVE THIS PLANE. I WOULD LOVE TO GET ONE BUT MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO HELP WITH THE BUILD THERE IS A PROBLEM. I HAVE HEALTH ISSUES. SO WHAT COULD I DO TO PURCHASE ONE OF THESE PLANES AND PLUS I HAVE NO DESIRE TO BUILD ONE. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS? COULD YOU ANSWER THIS FOR ME.

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад

      Yup, I'm looking forward this one as well. If you're not able to build one, I believe that you have at least 3 options. (Keep in mind that it won't be available before OSH '23.)
      1. Buy one from a private builder. Naturally, this will be some time after they're first released. But I've seen multiple postings online from people who enjoy building more than flying. The take it all the way to registration and then have the next owner do the Phase 1.
      2. I know there's 3rd party companies that build kit airplanes like Vans RVs, not aware of anyone building Sonexes, but it's something you could look into. Any third party that has experience building RVs should be able to do a Sonex. Not sure how they're registered then. E-AB, E-LSA, S-LSA?
      3. Get an EAA Chapter to build one as a Chapter project. You'd have to check what the rules and bylaws are on that, but I know of multiple chapters that built planes and then sold them to benefit the chapter or started a club with one. An EAA Chapter is not allowed to own an airplane.
      BONUS: Quick Build kits have become more and more, I'll say... QUICK over the years. Developments from the 2022 One Week Wonder will make it's way into production kits and therefore the High Wing. Pay close attention to what tasks are left to be completed and make an honest assessment if that IS something you could do yourself.
      Who else has ideas for Scott?

      @@LeftSeatAdventures THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION AND ADVICE. LIKE I HAD SAID I HAVE NEVER FLOWN A ULTRALIGHT BEFORE I WAS TALKING TO THIS MAN THAT HE SAID HE BOUGHT A AERO 103 JUST TO GET A LITTLE FLYING TIME UNDER HIS BELT. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS IDEAL? HAVE YOU SEEN OR HAD ANY EXPERIENCE WITH THIS PLANE BECAUSE HE SAID YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT THIS PLANE TOGETHER. HE SAID IT WAS A VERY EASY PLANE TO FLY. I KNOW YOU ARE WITH THIS OTHER PLANE SONEX, BUT WHAT DDO YOU THINK? THANKS SCOTT

      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад

      Just saw this now, don't think YT likes all caps in a comment. Personally, I'd love to fly an Aerolite 103. Check out the Experimental Aircraft Channel for more on them. You can't log flight time in an ultralight towards a certificate or rating, but it is good cheap fun flying.

    Sonex needs to develop a areovee 6 cylinder.

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад

      I was just pondering this idea too. The engines, weight and balance webinar claims an engine weight of 175# for the Aerovee 2.1. I wonder if the extra 2 cylinders and everything else required would take it over the 200# design limit. Could it be lighter than a Corvair engine? Or maybe that's one of those other future announcements eluded to in this vid. 🤪 (I have no clue.) Engine webinar:

      @@LeftSeatAdventures Another great engine line that doesn't get much press in the US is MWFly. They have engines ranging from 100-160hp in 2.2L and 2.5L, that can but built with or without a PSRU gearbox. They are dual ECU FADEC and water cooled... kind of like the UL and Rotax had a baby. They are also working on a Turbo-normalized and Turbocharged options. They have currently built 280 engines since 2013, and are also ASTM certified, which not many other engine companies can say beyond Rotax. I just started representing them here in the US, and have a B22D installed in my Sonex.
