  • You asked, is the Sonex High WIng a backcountry airplane? No, but I think it'll be plenty capable for grass and gravel strips and certainly unlock even more ADVENTURE!

    I’m not a huge fan of high wings, but this will be the only aircraft I know of that will be able to fly acro when solo, and have 500 + lbs useful load, and quality as a LSA. Other acro lsa planes are either solo (panther) or have a limited useful load (regular sonex)

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад

      Yea, I'd have to put my Sonex on a serious diet for me to meet the acro gross weight limit of 950#. The high wing looks like it'll be the most versatile Sonex yet. And who knows, maybe developments with it will lead to a bigger low wing? 🤔

    This looks just right, and with a centre stick. Great company Sonex.

      Yup, looking forward to these being available to build. 👍👍👍 Center stick makes a huge difference with the legacy Sonex, definitely the way to go on a high wing

      Same here! However, we'll see the 2 place jet prototype before the high wing. Recent investments in tooling should help speed everything up though

    Any reason I can't take the doors off and fly it really slowly?
    I understand the case for low-drag and cross-country trim, but sometimes you want to feel the air you're flying through.

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  Год назад +1

      That would be a cool capability, it all depends on the design. Guess we'll have to wait and see what Sonex comes out with. I fly a 182 with a seaplane door that you can leave open as long as you keep the airspeed low.

    I'm thinking Glasair Sportsman, right? Cantilevered, clean highspeed airfoil with flush rivets forward & rear, clean gear with moderate wheel-pants, Y tail & or T-tail for surface efficiency (and potentially smaller surface area!), a more powerful engine for cruising speed & carrying capacity (larger or longer wing?). It would be nice for aerobatic capability, grass strips (NOT gravel bars!) and 150MPH cruise speeds @ 8,500 at 75% power. I know that does NOT appeal to John Monnette, but- there's definitely a group who want to travel with a touch of grass clearance & room to take gear. I can't go more than 4 hours without a pee break, and, I know that my wife can't either! High wings aren't my 1st thought when it comes to engine out scenarios, but- with attention to detail- it may be high teen's glide ratio, allowing an alert pilot more choices. A high wing is a 'miss' when considering the overall philosophy, but- I'm getting old and would love to plant my butt without warm up calisthenics!

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад +1

      Yea, a Sportsman is definitely one I'd like to try out in the bush. But with a Glasair budget, perhaps the RV-15 will fit the bill? Mark did say they're toying with more ideas, who knows what we'll see in the future.

      False. Mark mentioned something about the continuing design work on it just yesterday to me. At this point, it's still pixels and bytes. There is no physical prototype built yet but they are very much still working on it.

    there are states in the midwest (including WI where sonex is located), where you are almost never in radar contact.

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад

      Sounds like a state I need to live in. 👍 Definitely the case in Alaska too.

    • @SoloRenegade
      @SoloRenegade 2 года назад

      @@LeftSeatAdventures you will get in radar contact, in places like WI, if you fly more than 5k AGL, but most "backcountry" pilots don't fly that high. Some think people are crazy for flying that high. You should see the looks I get when I tell local pilots I was flying xcounty at 7,500ft.
      Most of my personal flying experience so far has actually been at High DA n the Rockies flying light airplanes and helicopters at or near their service ceiling altitudes. Taking off with DA of 9000ft, sometimes more, flying at 12,000 MSL in a C172 while still being less than 2000ft AGL on an IFR flight, etc. So flying at altitude doesn't bother me.

    High wing, V tail, with more range! Yes please! In South Africa 🇿🇦 most runways do not have fuel available, so bigger fuel tanks will be great for cross country flying in Africa.

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад

      Do the same airports carry Jet-A instead? Same problem in Alaska, the fuel at our camp comes in on a barge. Have to make it last.

  • @Maverick648

    I just don't know if they're safe for very windy conditions in Oklahoma

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад

      It's a valid concern with lighter aircraft, I guess time will tell. There's an fbo near me with a Czech built LSA, they claim they don't fly it much due to the winds they get. A higher gross weight than the typical Sonex will help, but how much?

  • @stefanospagnolini506
    @stefanospagnolini506 2 года назад +1

    More fuel.. fuel burn very easily!!
    I’m not a happy to carry much fuel for many reason such as performance, weight, and safety. But I understand the difficulty to have fuel in some place, mah e add fuel pod only when is needed? What you think about?

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад +1

      I'm all for more fuel depending on the mission and location. Some Sonex builders have added tubular wing tanks, others have added aux tanks behind the seat. I've watched Alaska State Troopers use multiple flexible bags to carry fuel when they're going to be out in the bush for longer periods. Something like this:

    • @stefanospagnolini506

      I usually carry the fuel for the trip, for the alternate/s plus extra 45 minutes. I need no more, but yes, here where I live I can find an airstrip within 15-20 min of flight.. sure not alone like Alaska

  • @brent1041

    I just want to comfortably fit. At over 250lbs there really isn’t much that I can actually fit in. Let alone comfortably. Give me a very roomy cabin and the payload to actually fit a couple bigger people and fuel to go somewhere and the rest don’t really matter.

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад

      I hear ya, I had to put my arm around the pilot to fit in the waiex. 80hp wasn't enough either. But it really depends on your mission. A center stick Sonex makes a very roomy solo aircraft, at least that's how I fly it. Ya wouldn't think so, but I was actually more comfortable 2 up in a Zenith 701. That makes me wonder what a 750 or 801 would be like. A Bush Cat is claimed to be roomy, I have yet to sit in one. But I'm still looking forward to what the High Wing has to offer. One approach is to own a 1-2 seater as that fits most people's needs most of the time and rent something like a 182 when you need more seats.

    My bladder is 10hrs, no joke. Have proven it hundreds of times over many years. I have flown 6hr flights without taking a bathroom break. I have driven cross country many times, usually exceeding 20hrs straight driving before stopping for sleep. Years of combat missions lasting 2-48hrs straight, and could consistently go to 10.75hrs. blows my mind people can't hold it for at least 4hrs. Because most people actually can, and they prove it every single night (as they sleep).

    • @LeftSeatAdventures
      @LeftSeatAdventures  2 года назад +1

      Hahaha, I know. Just joking on the 2 hours, but I've heard it gets like that after passing a certain age. We'll see! 😉

    • @SoloRenegade
      @SoloRenegade 2 года назад

      @@LeftSeatAdventures yes, things do change with age. but some of that is due to lack of movement, becoming more lazy and sedentary, and not pushing ones self anymore. Like many things, control of one's own bladder takes practice, just like muscular exercise, or brain exercise, etc. Some people stop trying, but I am determined to see how well I can do as I age, and prove it's more mental, lifestyle, and effort than anything else.
