"Helping you live your aviation dreams."
INSPIRE - TEACH - EXPLORE
I'm Matt, a husband, father, pilot, and mechanic currently working as an A&P Apprentice.
I started this channel while I was shopping for an aircraft for the family and I to enjoy. Doing my research with other aviation videos, I noticed far too many comments by people saying "I'd love to do this, but I can't." Here I was, just a regular guy, working hard to pursue my aviation dreams. I learned a long time ago that saying "I can't" is THE way to make sure you never will. (And had done so myself for FAR too long.)
So, I bought a project aircraft, worked on it in my garage, flew it and this blossomed into my new career as an aircraft mechanic.

As I've been working as an aircraft mechanic apprentice, I'm surprised by how many issues I'm finding that should be found on a proper preflight inspection by the pilot. Some stuff is pretty obvious and honestly shocking that it wasn't found. So pilots, please do a proper preflight inspection before you fly. It'll save you money and maybe even your life. I purchased a car from Carvana July 2021 using my credit union as the lender. You do not have to use Carvana's financial institution.
DON'T BE LAZY AND INTROVERTED AND DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE AND INSPECT WHAT YOUR PURCHASING ESPECIALLY VEHICLES. NOTHING IS AN EASY OR FREE LUNCH. MONEY RULES THE DEN AND ALL OF THE FOXES ARE HUNGRY AND DOING THE RIGHT THING IN BUSINESS MEANS LESS PROFIT. HAVING HONERABLE BUSINESSES TODAY IS LIKE RAINY DAYS IN NEW MEXICO. They have you insure the car 2 days prior to delivery to cover any transport damage. Then you have to make a claim and get hit with high rates.
😊
Where can I get the log book you made sir?
Never too late to do anything. There’s 80 years old riding around ZX14R & hyabusas lol
those stickers pointed put on the windshield are not state inspection stickers, rather they are just inventory stickers; to keep track of what state of the reconditioning process the vehicle is in and what inspection center it is at, just an internal system that they have... state related stuff is a whole different matter
Active Airforce here, as a 2A5 we can test on both A and P but some specialties can only test on one or the other depending on what you do/did while in
Are these weather packs removale, and re-useable?
School is probably the best way to become an aircraft mechanic, especially for someone who knows nothing about the industry. It's expensive, but it's worth it in the end. One of the best schools that I would recommend is Aviation Institute of Maintenance. Their curriculum meets and surpasses the FAA's standard for becoming a certified A&P technician. They also can train you in other industries as well as aviation and they have multiple campuses across the country.
Some have had issues getting titles and tags
I can say from first hand experience, having worked as an apprentice while going to A&P school, that a lot of pilots do not preflight the airplanes properly. Some pilots just glance at a few things, and hop in the seat. Then find they didn’t remove the air inlet covers after starting an engine. Yes I’ve actually seen that. The environment I worked in gave me a lot of insight into what may very well be causing all of this. A lot of new pilots are being sold on going to the airlines, rather than finding other careers in aviation like contractor piloting, or corporate flying, which is what I’m working towards. And there have been a lot of fast paced flight schools popping up that are based around getting pilots to the airlines as quickly as they can. For example, one school that I saw during Sun N Fun of 2024, almost sold me on getting all my ratings within 4 months. I swear that’s no exaggeration. That is exactly what they told me. And the schools reasoning was, “get to the airlines as quick as possible to build that seniority as quick as possible”. I didn’t say directly, but I wanted to tell the instructor/salesman, to screw himself. The schools practice is unsafe, and ludicrous. I’m instead going to MTSU, because I’ll get everything within two and a half years, there a lot better than cramming everything within four months. Im also not in any hurry to get there, because I’m enjoying the maintenance side of aviation. Now that right there has created a mindset in a lot of pilots, more specifically instructors, to rush a preflight so they can get in the airplane and build hours. Or, burning holes in the sky, as said in the killing zone book. Whenever I would go ask a student pilot what a specific antenna is, like a VOR antenna or a COMM 1 or 2 antenna, the poor student would look like a deer in the headlights. Because their instructors never told them what the antenna was. If I asked questions about the engines, which are as simple as can be in Cessnas and pipers, same thing. And some students just barely passed their checkrides because of that. So as far as bad preflight inspections go, I put a lot of blame on instructors, because they’re not teaching their students the value of preflighting an airplane, and barely give them a quality flight lesson. Now, I would like to do some instructing myself, because I think it can be fun. But I want to instruct for the sake of having fun and my knowledge of aviation to any student I’m teaching. And I want to actually build real world experience before I ever step into the CFI world.
Financing would be enough for me to say no.
Would they take on an Apprentice that doesn’t have previous mechanic experience? For example, a person who has had a full career in the tech industry and is looking for a change? Or is school necessary in that case because they wouldn’t hire someone like that?
Considering a vehicle from them, but I’m not so sure. Dealers are just as shady so it kinda seems like damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Haven’t found what I want through private sellers so I kind of have to go this road. The thing I see with most comments, except a few is people just buy the car without even looking at it. Never trust dealers to properly inspect or disclose everything to you. Crawl under the car and look for rust or parts that may be worn down. Open the hood and look at everything. If you don’t know what you’re looking at, bring someone with you that does. A lot of people could save themselves bad buying experiences and spot obvious problems. Like I said if you don’t know anything about cars, bring someone with you who does. If you have a mechanic that you trust, pay him on an off day to come with you and look at the car. If baffles me that people will just buy a vehicle without so much as opening the hood or crawling underneath to look at everything
In general, each individual owns and maintain the airplane for 10 yrs, and sell it, for the next upgaded one, when they sell aircraft, how about the selling price,, in GA , SOME certain airplane price bose up as time boes by, others are not. Those i should consider
As a 27 year senior aircraft technician, go work for a major airline. If you like to work hard and be under paid go to an mro or general aviation. Regional are good for experience. With the current shortage, you can get hired on a major fresh outa school
I’m not sure if you’ll see this but as an experienced guy in the field do you know about usps/fedex etc. and how it is relevant work for gateway/background experience regards? I think I’ve heard people talk about that and I’m just trying to gather info as to good courses of action in the early stages of work experience as someone essentially entering the industry.
What about corporate mechanics? I heard those guys are pushing $125k-$200k with fortune 500’s
This is a fantastic video and really good insight. Thank you. I retire from the military soon and I was a helo mechanic so going from that to A&P made sense. Just didn’t know what tools to start with. Thanks!!
Me, retired A&P and FE. Forty-five years in the business. I enjoyed and made a good living. In my next life I'm going to be a Flight Attendant, hang with the women, travel, stay at nice hotels, stay clean, have lots of time off...
Carvana ripped me off for over $46,000. My life is ruined over this. Don't be an idiot like I was.
Care to elaborate? I'd like to really know how. Let me tell you what I did when I bought a car from them. I saved up 17k. Then bought the car for 17k with a credit union loan. Now I have 17k sitting in the bank and paying the loan over time. I add about 500/month to the 17k. If the car breaks down or gets totaled, I pay it off and move on. My life isn't ruined. Now, I will tell you I did almost get ruined by a dealership who tried to commit bank fraud when they claimed I made twice as much and put a loan to pay for a car. I was a fool. They had me write everything in paper and sign the paper documents with a different deal. Then they told me the printer wasn't working and would have to redo everything electronically on their table. I signed without reading (my fault I will admit) They gave me a thumb drive and I drove the car home. I woke up the next day happy with my purchase. Then I opened up the documents to go report the numbers to the IRS for tax relief. They switched the numbers. I called them on their bullshit the next day and I turned back in the car, and we went our separate ways. I could afford to make the monthly payments then, but I worked for the government and that fraud could be seen. Whatever they were doing there I wanted NO PART in it. So, I lost my dream car that day. Had I known how to negotiate I probably would have had my dream car. I learned a lesson that day and was able to walk away from it clean. (10% interest! My family still laughs at me. ) So far the car I have from Carvana is bringing me from A to B. It's an EV so I don't have to worry much about the rest of the stuff ICE cars have to worry about. It was owned by an Uber driver who drove on the highway about 65 MPH on average. It had a HORRIBLE wax job done to it. One of the tires were leaking air, they put NO washer fluid in it, and there were more scratches. At the same time the windows were already tinted on them. The tires were new. It was my first car buying experience in 35 years of my life. Carvana + Credit Union was the best combination for me. I wanted to get a cash car but, I wanted an EV. It may not have been my dream EV but it was an EV so I made the compromise.
Didn’t you have it inspected by a mechanic in the week Carvana gives you to return it?
@ Yes.
I got ripped off. They tried to sell me a wrecked truck for $43k. Then, i took a $46k substitute they said wasn't wrecked. Now, they won't take it back. Don't get screwed like me. I am an idiot for doing business with Carvana.
I've seen this same exact account and comment on 4 other videos. Any used vehicle for over $30k from anyplace is a scam.
@@partyrobbins4690 yes, they screwed me hard. Good luck to you.
@@ShoNuf-w3s What was the make and model of the truck?
How did you find out it was wrecked? The accident wasn’t on the CarFax?
@@chrisalvarado7127 No, it was not on CarFax. Good luck to you.

Sonex has recently announced a collaboration between Fly Eagle Sport and Acrisure Insurance offeribg a transition training program at Glendale, Arizona.
My experience was more on the delivery part than the car itself..i just got it today 11-8-24 basically end of the thanksgiving weekend i purchased a car ..smooth transactions and everything soo it got delayed 3 times this past week and originally gonna get the car this Wednesday basically bc the registration hold up WHICH they werent being detailed on until the Financial Manager called me and apologized and told me why the car kept being delayed..which was due to inspection..lowkey i might’ve avoided something with it regardless but anyways i gotten a new car and shipped within a day
I also have a few issues with Carvana as recent as of yesterday (12/5/2024) The truck I was interested in was out of state so I had it shipped to a relatively local Carvana center. I was there to look it over in person the day after it arrived. Carvana rep did notify me the night before that the vehicle had a small bit of damage (a missing bit of plastic to the bumper and a small section of paint scratches with a small chip away on the hood) and wanted to see if I still wanted to come check it out in the morning. I was going to replace the factory bumpers anyways so I said I’d be there. On arrival, I got there an early right at opening hours. Was frustrated that they wouldn’t open the doors or allow me to check out the vehicle until the sales rep arrived at my scheduled appointment time. Basically only cleaning staff arrive at opening hour and they won’t open until the first scheduled appointment. After the rep arrived, I was able to do all the in person checks I desired (and I really tested them by crawling all under the truck, shining a flashlight into every bit of the undercarriage and suspension) but after opening the hood and starting the truck, I was rather shocked to discover they don’t allow test drives during in-person potential-buyer appointments. Obviously there is the 7-day no questions buyback policy but anyone interested in a vehicle should be allowed to test drive the damn thing before buying. Anyways, I noted a pretty serious oil leak and realized someone had installed the oil pan without a gasket. Not the end all be all of items but the lack of negotiation on price was a sticking point from that moment. By the time I finished the undercarriage inspection, I knew the shocks, upper and lower control arms, front rotors, the catalytic converter, and a couple other parts would need to be replaced pronto due to some very obvious rust issues which someone tried to paint over. At the end of the visit, I still bought the truck. Someone here is bound to be flabbergasted at my stupidity. But, Carvana has a fantastic (although very tedious to start) limited warranty that comes with every purchase that covers (at no cost to the buyer) anything not considered wear and tear items which is diagnosed to be mechanically unsound or potentially hazardous to the operation of the vehicle within the first 30 days or 1500 miles of ownership. Additional investment in their Drivercare extended warranty program takes this even further with complete coverage of all mechanical, electrical, and even general maintenance items which made need replacement or repair within set time or mileage limits. So, I bought that truck, immediately took it to a Ford service center for inspection, got my list of parts and assemblies needing replacement as well as a notice of fluids needing flushed (transmission, coolant, and brakes), and then turned around to take that to a full service collision and repair center. By the time I woke up in the morning, the claim had been started, the shop had re-verified the findings of the dealership service center, and the replacement parts had all been ordered. On Monday, I’m going to call in to argue my case for the paint repair on the small section of scratched and chipped paint of the hood from the transportation damage. I’m pretty confident that will be fixed under the warranty coverage too. By the time my 30 day limited warranty is up, I’ll have successfully replaced most of the suspension parts from to back at no cost to me except the cost of not being able to drive a (new to me) vehicle back to my home right after purchasing it. Oh, and the tires were atrocious on purchase of course so after getting the vehicle back from the collisions repair center, I’ll be taking it straightaway to a tire shop for new ones. Which I had planned anyways because I never keep factory or used tried on my vehicles ahead of winter.
Thank you for the info. Would you recommend Carvana or would buy from them again as oppose to going to a used car dealership?
I'm going to bring my car in the last 30 days of the warranty to see.
Im a robotics technician looking for a change. Im going to take avionics courses at a community college.
i tryed their finacing app 4 time back out 4 times was not charge any thing very easy to do but have trade in not sure if i will use that one may be some one needs it
What a nice interview with such a bright and productive gentleman! EAA's Young Eagles Program opportunity deserves a big Wow!
Top notch my man. Thank you. Just made a solid repair to my Polaris Sportsman.
Color coding the heat shrink is a great idea.
What qualifications and fees for Aviation engineer
They sell GAP insurance but don’t stand by it. Six months having my car totaled and my insurance paying.GAP insurance is not paying . No car and still being charged for the balance. Sucks.
Oh, hell no
what did they say was the reason for denying your claim?
1. Variety of work, airliners, helicopters ,G.A etc. 2. Skills are transferable to side hustles , hobbies or other things like working at home or vehicle etc. 3. You can branch out and be a mobile mechanic be your own boss. 4.Invest in more skills within aviation. 5. Social capital
I will not recommend Carvana!! We boughy a Toyota Sienna for our family. After 2 months with new tires, the tires are bald so we took it in to Midas and was told we need to replace the lower control arm with a cost of whooping $1700! We will never buy from Carvana ever again!
Wouldn’t the 100 day warranty cover this?
You got screwed by Midas, more than Carvana.
That’s definitely Midas screwing you. I’ve had control arms and tie rods on my truck replaced and it didn’t cost me more than $500 parts and labor.
Ya I have a feeling midas may be ripping you off. A.) I would get a second opinion and just see if all it needed was an alignment. I have bought used factory certied toyota and it was horribly misaligned. I pointed it out and they did fix it, but carvana selling a car that needs an alignment, while annoying, I feel like every car dealership does that. OR B.) Why is midas charging you that much for that repair? Dealer service is more expensive, and even they would only charge like 1200 bucks for that job. would be 900 or less at a trustworthy independent mechanic. which trust me, i know those are hard to find.
I am torn right now
Me too. I've been researching left and right about them and CarMax. My friend just told me tonight that her niece bought one through Carvana and had a good experience. I called the loan lady at my bank and she's never done a Carvana loan before so she didn't have an answer either. I would definitely take it to my mechanic and have it thoroughly checked though within the 7 day window, if I choose to get the car from them.
I brought my car from them no problems and i got it checked out at Audi.
How do you become an apprentice
Im scared to purchase a car at the dealership much less carvana
I'm surprised people would purchase a vehicle without test driving it. At least they give you 7 days to have it inspected.
Great to see close up shots of the crimping process.
I'm studying has AME NOW. and intrest in avionics
If only you would have shown which plastic part (short\long) the males and females go into. 😢
Wonderful job. Thank you.
Hello, I sold mine to them. I am looking for a newer one now, I would and might buy from them only because I get easily overwhelmed so walking in and dealing with people is a no-go for me. I am also checking into caredge because they can do all the car buying I would only have to e sign. :)
I'm trying to get an apprenticeship with 0 skills and experience. any advice on which company I should contact? Thank you.
Well , you’re already headed in right direction just by asking the question. Honestly it’s all up to timing. We’ve got 2 guys in our shop that had zero aviation experience but they came in at the right time. Some IAs will only want to have one apprentice at a time, some multiple, some none. Make a list of all the airports and maintenance shops within an hour drive of you, look up their Directors of Maintenance and start making phone calls. I ended up driving an hour but you may not have to. One shop wanted me to be a parts guy first, which is a good start, but not right fit for me. One just took an apprentice and didn’t need me. The timing was perfect for my current shop. When you talk to them, mention any hands on experience you have in other fields that might carry over and how you think you could adjust to aviation. Finally, just make sure you’re teachable. Good luck!
If you're a millionaire, go with certified. If you routinely eat ramen, .. experimental for you!
Gonna be going through and apprenticeship starting January switching over from industrial welding
Do it once.
We should be working with High Schools to have programs geared toward AMT while in HS. Spend summers and weekends as an Apprentice to an A&P / IA. Instead of College you can pay to go to Bakers and finish up. On the high side 5K and 2 to 3 weeks later you are an AMT. That's how i did it back in the day .. minus waiting 20 years to go to Bakers. I was a professional pilot during those years .. so no lost time really.
