One of their best. "By the way, which one's Pink"? was an actual question the music executives asked the band, assuming it was the singer's name; that's how out of touch the business was. It was all gravy to them. The album should really, like all PF, be listened to from beginning to end. Like the ole' days of vinyl. That's what albums were for. Great reaction as ever JV; you a rocker now dude. Love, x
Truth. There is no Pink. Its just us. Or us and them?
yep....even back when I was younger that line always made me laugh....like, 'how in the world do the record label people not know their names?'...well now of course I understand why, because all those execs are concerned about is how much money can they make off of crushing their signed talent...but yea, that line says so very much in just six simple words.... wonderful. Welcome To The Machine is an extension to the ongoing saga of 'the adventures of dealing with your label people' I believe....
Dropped down to write a comment, no need for that Dawn - you nailed it 👌
I agree that they should listen to the album, up to a point. I heard the greatest album ever, Dark Side of the Moon, with the songs here and there. I liked it so much, I got Wish You Were Here when it came out. Wish You Were Here is a slow-moving album. It took a while for the individual songs to grow on me and for me to love the album. Dark Side of the Moon, I would have loved it straight through from the beginning, but I didn't hear it until after WYWH.
Love how he just gets it,they created their own genre of music and he relates it to alien, like a first, out of this world.❤
Roy Harper is the singer on this. Long time friend of the band, also good friends with Led Zep. Roy was a classic folk troubadour in the 70's, with albums like the classic Stormcock. I saw Roy once at Stonehenge free festival when it was still allowed. He was the most stoned performer I've ever seen, but was mesmerising. Hat's Off To Harper on Zep 3 is also about Roy.
I saw a David Gilmour solo show in early 80s and he brought Roy out to play with him! Us stoners were in awe! ("One of those days in England...").
Can't recall what they played but it's probably online somewhere.
Classic middle finger to the corporate establishment by Floyd.
Timeless too! Cheers Jay man 👍
"Oh by the way, which one's Pink?" ... classic!!!
💗🖤💗🖤💗
It is so nice to see Pink Floyd's music truly appreciated. 😁👍
1975. I was 21. Over 45 years ago, and it still slaps you full in the face. Gold standard is right. Congrats on 250K+ subscribers!!!
Pink Floyd is in a category of their own
“Much like "Welcome To The Machine," this song is about corporations and how they control their musicians. The line, "We call it riding the gravy train" is held for such a long time to emphasize the fact that these companies will go as long as possible to squeeze every last cent out of their clients.” Awesome song !❤️
So, the band members haven't enjoyed the tens of millions of dollars each of the main guys have earned. Without that gravy train this album would never have existed and we would have yet another album about Roger's daddy to pick and muddle through. To every success EVER, from the start of time, regardless of economic plan it is coveted by the masses and the drive to make and sell more has always existed. I love the album, I love the ideas, but everything in this world has always required "MORE", "BETTER" & "FASTER" and it will never go away. To think, without that push for all of that, we would still be having to attend the symphony or opera for our music and viewing pleasures. Just my measley two cents on the thought.
The same as the government does to it's citizens.
@@Wolverines77 you wouldn't of had anything because your train of thought kills individualism. Which mean no great stuff to inspire the next generation.
I was 15 years old in 1970. Every time you turned on the radio there was a new sound coming out. Songs that sounded like no songs before them. Each one seemingly different and better than the last. Imagine the power of these songs Never being heard by anyone before and then boom.
Me too. Damn we were so f#@king lucky to be young then.
Pretty sure that synth sound you ask about that starts at 0:56 is made with a Moog Minimoog synthesizer. I think it's the same keyboard that they used for the keyboard solo in Pink Floyd's song "Welcome To Machine."
Only Pink Floyd can make a song be pulled into a radio , then hear the station being changed to an acoustic guitar, then play along into the next song. The whole album is a masterpiece and part of a run of albums in the 70s that no band has equalled. Genuises
Cool reaction
Jayvee is such fun to watch; he brightens with everything I loved from my youth, and cheerfully carries the torch.
2:04 - after he sings "by the way which one's Pink" I like the way David makes the guitar laugh this snarky laugh like Ha Haaa
one of the best of pink floyd
Some things just never get old
so true
Favorite floyd song!!!!!
Your reaction was so pure and badass. Keep on doing what your doing.
Shine on You Crazy Diamond is another great song from this era of Pink Floyd.
You can never go wrong with some Floyd!!! I remember when I came across them and my parents and grandparents listen to them I was like whatttt lol. They are a league of their own!!!
I definitely agree, Pink was so ahead of their time. Classic tune
Your reactions are so natural and spontaneous. That's what counts ! Great ear , keep going !! ✌✌😊😊
“Alien presence, out of this world”
You nailed it with that quote alone.
The whole album is so good. One of the best ever made.
They were indeed ahead of their time and they were just brilliant. I've been a fan for more years than I like to think.
You discovered one of the best syncopated intros in modern music, my cousin. Pink Floyd were made up of an eclectic mix of arts, architecture, and technology students at first, but had a firm grounding in music, as most British educated kids did back then. So they knew of Gershwin and his I Got Rhythm ideas. You might try to react to one of the original recordings of Gershwin sometime.
Gilmour's guitar solo at the end of the song seems to segue into the sound of an old radio, which he continues and seamlessly builds to "Wish You Were Here", which again begins with the sound of an old radio... That's the problem with listening to individual songs on some Pink Floyd albums. These are so-called concept albums, where individual songs flow into one another, not only musically but thematically. Therefore, it is ideal to listen to these albums from beginning to end.
The song was originally supposed to be sung by Roger Waters, but after he strained his voice during "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", it was guested by Roy Harper, who was recording his album "HQ" in the next studio at the time. Harper is a folk singer and guitarist who has worked with Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, among others. David Gilmour declined to sing this song. It turned out to be an excellent song - and thanks for that!
Hi from Czech Republic to Czech Republic, Luboš 😂👍🏻
You CAN tell it came out in the ‘70s BECAUSE it sounds so good, so clean.
Truly a classic band.
My favorite line in the whole song is "We're so happy we can barely count." (the money) I think that sums it up really well.
Wonderful, expressive analysis…once again!!
It suddenly goes mono in transition to Wish You Were Here, so it makes sense if you listen to them both.
This is THE song that zones me out! Every "Floydian" has one! Beautifully brilliant.....indeed. I wonder...which one's Pink? ;}
This song was a bitter angry reckoning with the record industry: as soon as the managers see that you're successful, they offer you a big fat cigar, smear honey around your beard and try to wring you out like a wet cleaning rag. If the artist dies (drugs or the loss of creativity or whatever), they don't give a damn - as long as the cash register is right: Welcome to the machine ... (the song before; so "Welcome to the money-printing machine of the music industry, take a seat, have a cigar... make us (the managers) all rich, then you'll get a small piece of the big cake - or have another cigar..."
Back then you put on the vinyl and cranked the amp to the max: you felt the bass in your whole body and the guitar kind of exploded in your head... Whether your parents were banging on your door or the neighbors were protesting - you were completely immersed in this album, you absorbed every note, every word of the lyrics like a sponge.
I first heard this song as a B-side by the Foo fighters- I'd definitely recommend hearing the amped-up version 😎
That's an old-school analog keyboard synthesizer, probably an EMS Synthi AK1, or a Minimoog, and Roy Harper is guest-singing this song.
I never hear people react to Alan Parsons Project. I always think of Parsons when I hear Pink Floyd since they worked together. You should check it out.
You’re right! They’re the gold standard! 🏆
Need to do Dogs. My fav from Pink Floyd.
This is from the wish you were here album that came out when I around 12, blow me out of the window then. Astounding. I have enjoyed the other tunes tonight but, this is the Don. Class of its own.
After a barbecue at my friend's house, we went down into his partially finished basement and put on this CD. We sat there, beers in hand, and listened to the entirety of it, engulfed by it, not saying a single word to one another. 'Nuff said.
Reminds me of the first time I listened to it. Only it was on vinyl...oh and we were partaking in a more "green" form of recreation. 😉👍
@@rich_t I own the vinyl version too. Although I can't find the postcard that came with it. Bummer.
You're on a roll tonight, jay! 🙂
It's highly likely that not only did Gilmour do the guitar parts but also the bass on the recording, it's no secret but Gilmour actually plays bass on about half of Floyd's recordings because it was easier than hanging around waiting for Roger to get on with it or as with Hey You Roger couldn't get on with the fretless bass on that track.
Roy Harper is singing. The song is about corruption in the music industry. It ends suddenly because it flows into the next song on the album.
One of my favourite floyd songs. Apparently roger couldn't sing it and Dave didn't won't to so they got harper in as he was recording at the same time! Perfect voice for the song.
Absolutely unique band
So fun to watch you totally dig this track as much as I do!! That bass intro !!!
I love this song. 💞💞💞
Omg, can't believe u posted this!!! One of my favourite songs cause of Davids guitar and the weird lyrics by "unknowns" but def. an amazing and underrated tune that I rate top!!! 👌 Awesome Jayvee
I'm sure someone else has said this, but they are an album band. You just have to chill and listen to a while album. It's always an experience
Great reaction, made my day 👏👏👍
Ok, so I m REALLY sick, but when they mentioned Pink... their name came from Pink Anderson & Floyd Council.
It's a phenomenal song
'Pink Floyd is the Gold Standard'. No better way of putting it.
That dirty bluesy funky solo by David Gilmour is fire 🔥🎸
The Greatest band of all time.
Run Like Hell from the Pulse concert is awesome. I think you will really like it.
One of my favourites
By far one of my favorites. Comes from my favorite album they have. I remember as a kid in the 90’s my dad telling me the story behind all their songs but this one specifically. Then listening to him belt it out and feeling it. Grew on me quick! Best line is still “oh by the way, which ones Pink?”
“Mother” Live 1980-81. One of the last tours PF played together as the Original group.
I can't express how much joy it gives me that new generations are experiencing such dope music !
We are so happy you enjoyed this song suggestions … hmmm well If you haven’t already watch, Pink Floyd the Wall Movie … to understand the music. And the entire Dark Side of the Moon album.
😶 It’ll change your life ☮️
"we're so happy we can hardly count"
Thumbs up for not pausing.
Roy harper is the singer ,seen roy loads of times ,magical so underated as a guitarst love him it was this song that put me on his path soooo glad i hate the white man was the first song of his i ever heard that was me hooked 🏴✌🎼🎸
Pink Floyd.... 😍 .... they know society...
Great take. I love welcome to the machine on this album. It went through my head when I dropped my kid off for kindergarten for his first day. Hated that day.
Yup, this goes straight into 'Wish You Were Here'...good one man
You have a good ear. I can tell because when you sing back bits of the song, you actually hit the right notes or beats. Some reactors will try and imitate what they've heard, and are way off the mark.
I know you probably have by now, but you have to listen to this album in whole so you can hear the incredible sequencing between the songs; the way this goes into the next track ''wish you were here" is spellbinding . 👍❤
glad you liked it my friend😎.... peace🎶☮
Gold standard. Got that right. So right.
To me, this is one of their 5 best. Just one of the coolest beats out there. Clean af. Also, one of the best rock songs ever.
💯
There's an alternative version where Roy Harper isn't singing, think it was Roger Waters, but they thought it didn't sound right, so they ended up getting him in instead. Nailed it.
When they were recording the Wish You Were Here album they started recording this song with Waters singing but David Gilmour didn't like the way it came out. Roy Harper happened to be recording in the same studio they were at the time, so Gilmour asked him to come give it a try and ended up liking the way it sounded better than Waters but Waters being the ego maniac he is was convinced he could get it right. Eventually the rest of the band agreed to go with the Harper lead version.
Heck yea dude!!! You listening to all good music!!! I love this song!
I'm only 33 but I love older tunes like this
Fun fact. this guy on the cover was really on fire. This is not a photo montage. When the wind blew, he burned his face a little. And to think that after recording, DSOTM were supposed to record the album only with the use of kitchen tools
Deep Purple, Deep Purple, Deep Purple, Deep Purple. Come on everybody all at once, Deep Purple!.
A lot of musicians die from overdoses, or suicide because of situations described in this song. Some artist, who are artists, begin to feel as if they are being treated like commodities by their labels.
You have definitely got the hang of this reacting
Well said..
Over the target bro ... Love your appreciation for excellence .
Right! And THEY call it riding the gravy train, because while the band is working putting out albums and doing concert tours, they (record company) count the money they make (for doing nothing!) BTW, apparently, in the early days, Pink Floyd was actually asked which band member was Pink. Just to show how little the people who dealt with them, actually knew about them. But boy, did they want a cut!
This song is a perfect example of why Pink Floyd's concept albums should be listened from first to last track, in order, uninterrupted, except for the break between side 1 and 2 of course. This song ends by suddenly becoming a song on the radio, then you actually hear the radio dial spin through a couple/few stations, stop on one, a line is spoken, and bang, into the next song. Which kind of sounds like it is on a radio, to start with anyway.
Yeah that's well known, g thanks
Have you ever listened to Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds? The synth on this song reminds me of that.
I can't play guitar but I can air guitar pic the whole solo ending - must just be in my head - note for note. That's how many times I've listened to this this; probably thousands of times in 50 years.
A fellow air guitarer - that solo at the end is perfection and I play along every time, it's like I can't help it. High five, friend!
Meddle through to The Wall - their golden age, just amazing!
Hope you can listen to their full albums sometime, the way they’re meant to be.
It was not a piano but a keyboard, and some synthesizers were added later on.
The way he sings “traa-ii-aa-ii-aain…” is Jagger-esque.
One of favorites. Fantastic.
“Great gig in the sky” “On the turning away” live (Delicate Sound of Thunder)
Sorrow is another one
Ooh what a party! I think this is an often overlooked track. When I only had the vinyl, it was just natural to play the album in two parts. Nowadays people are not even aware albums were produced that way. Now albums are often approached as a collection of loose tracks. This is such a shame. The fat groove of this track is just awesome.Together with the cynical tone it's such fun.
back to my 1st love of music...your one step closer to the question posed to the band "who's Pink?"
Pink Floyd is a great English rock band from 1964. They became a leading band of the progressive rock genre. They are one of the best-selling music artists of all time. "Wish You Were Here", "The Dark Side Of The Moon" & "The Wall" are among the best-selling albums of all time. They have a huge library of music. Some of their big hits were "See Emily Play", "Money", "Time", "Echoes", "Us & Them", "Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2", "Not Now John", "Comfortably Numb", "On The Turning Away", "High Hopes" etc.
He's done a dozen or more reactions by now. You can search for a bunch.
The lead singer on that one is not in Pink Floyd. He's Roy Harper, an iconoclast folk and highly talented singer songwriter from the 60s on. He happened to be recording in the next studio.
You're the 20th person to say that, thanks
@@rdaws73 You're fucking welcome
Oh yeah! One of my top all time fave rock bands with one of their ultimate F U to the music biz. I just feel so happy seeing you experience so much diversity in music💙🎶🎧
If you like some good base. You have to check out their song "Sorrow" from the Pulse tour ( Live ). It will blow your mind dude !
You’re correct. It goes into another song. The album is basically one continuous song. This is an amazing album. My favorite from Pink Floyd.
The way to listen to Pink Floyd is to listen to whole albums
Gotta follow that up with Welcome to the Machine
You said it: Gold Standard!
Great reaction Jayvee thanks! Floyd are unique...
Check out their album "Animals"!!
