The 5 Best Units In Civ 3 (Excluding Unique Units)

- Note: This does not include unique units! I covered unique units in another video.
I didn't want to waste time explaining the criteria, so I'll do it here. No naval units. No unique units. And I compared units vs the units they're likely to encounter based on what era you unlock them. So while tanks for example, are great on paper, they're not that good in practice because bombers and artillery exist in the industrial era. In the case of units with good synergy (like artillery + cavalry), I split the value down the middle.
The game file from #3 was taken from Drazek's Hall of Fame game as the Mayans. If you want to check out the Hall of Fame (top scores of all time), check it out here: hof.civfanatics.net/civ3/index...

Love Civ 3? Check out my streams! I stream high difficulty (demigod/deity/sid) and fun challenges like OCC and always war. My streams are at Noon EST on Sunday, and 6PM EST Wednesday, right here on youtube!
Or follow me on twitter to stay updated: twitter.com/SuedeCivIII
I know I'm kinda randomly asking but do anyone know a good place to stream newly released movies online?
Sorry Suede, but the top 5 best units in civ3 are a stack of ten bombers, 5 times...
A combat mechanics vid would not be boring imo. There's still some stuff about it that I don't quite understand.
It'd be cool to get a guide about tactical nukes and icbms (when to use them, when the ai uses them, counters etc)
And here I thought Settler was the strongest unit...
Me to! Oh boy was I wrong.
I just downloaded this game from steam for £3. Was not expecting any good content for it but then i found this goldmine of a channel
Could you also do a video on the most useless units in Civ 3? Chariots, Paratroopers, Cruise missiles etc.
i have never even seen a modern armor in civ 3. I've played this game for years
Damn 😂
You should play future start multiplayer. You’ll get your fill.
You never will in single player unless you mod a game. I did see mech infantry once and used them to kick the snot out of the Azteks while I was playing on a tiny map as China.
Industrial start my dude
I see them all the time because my games tend to drag on
Muskets always mystified me as to how their 60 shield cost could be justified. Sometimes I would pillage my own Saltpeter just so I could keep building Pikemen for cheap defense.
Knights also seemed over-costed, but not as badly. I guess the point was that unlike Horses, Knights could defend, and the great value of their mobility and their withdrawal chance still made them good when compared to the _nominally_ more cost-efficient Longbows/Medieval Infantry.
Cavalry are under-priced compared to the rule of thumb of "10 Shields per Combat-Power, +50% if mounted". According to that, they should have cost 90. And in fact 100, since they get extra movement too.
If you can build knights there's no reason the build pikeman, very situationally do I see musketmen being viable
Went back to CIV III some time ago, that was a game of my childhood. I wasn't good ad it, played at lowest difficulty just for fun. Now I passed every conquest scenario on warlord, and I am becoming better in normal games, thanks to you. Now I am making 50+ hours weekly in CIV III 🤣🤣
I would love to see the same list but for MP, like in MPT etc
I nerf swordsmen and infantry with my custom rules. I clearly need to add bombers to that list. I think I'll make Musketeers less expensive and that will counteract cavalry a little (although I've never found them too problematic due to that narrow window before the arrival of riflemen).
I know you didn't cover naval units but I think curraghs are hugely powerful depending on map state. Getting contact with another continent long before the AI accelerates your tech rate. And all for the price of Alphabet which you can get for free at the start.
Another really nice video! I can see your point for each unit in your list, but I have to disagree for the sword. defenitely wouldn´t make it #4 on my list. But my strong point is: the horseman is missing! which would be MY #1 -rated unit. They are the first general fast unit in the game, and by the time bombers and arty are around, they already have won my game (playing DG upwards, that is). and they nicely upgrade into cavs, which of course are awesome and in your list... (i am templar_x from -fanatics and -forum, btw ;))
Horsemen are good! That ratio on Swordsman is just too good to pass up though. Horse's mobility is good but their combat stats aren't super efficient. I find myself running out of horsemen after taking a few cities, and at that point, if you're not venturing too far from your border, the slower swordsman would work just as well. You get pretty good utility from horses too, they're good for cleaning up barbs.
Would you do a video over the palace upgrade mechanic? I never get to competitive against AI and i never get my palace fully upgraded before the game ends
Hey Suede, I think an interesting challenge would be a "comeback" victory on Sid. I don't know exactly how you could measure this, but it seems like the most important part of Civ is getting a strong start, so beating the hardest difficulty without that advantage would be admirable. Maybe making no moves for the first 10-20 turns or something?
I'm not good enough to do that. Sid is extremely hard and at the moment I can only win if I really stack the deck in my own favor.
I beat chieftain to regent, manage from monarch to emperor, survive on demigod and i get rekt on deity and sid. Now beating the game on sid? Bruh
Hahaha, great video, thanks! I could see myself in there too, makes me happy :-) - I noticed all those craters at the end, AIUI they're very annoying tiles that are costly to clean up? That can only happen when the tile has no other target I suppose (you mentioned putting units on there to avoid this IIRC in other videos), including improvements? Really like the list in any case, Cav+Artillery OP until bombers which are even more OP :-)
No, the opposite. Destroy all the improvements on a tile and it's automatically cratered. So that takes one bombing run if there isn't a railroad or a radar tower.
@@suedeciviii7142 Aaaah, I see, that makes sense! Forces people to defend their improvements, under threat of making their nearby cities useless for a long time! Doesn't sound too good if you're on the receiving end, hahaha :-)
@@cheaterman49 Oh it's awful. But in single player, bombers are so effective at conquering things that normally you don't want to do this, because if you do, you'll conquer the city and have to clean it up!
Super useful in future/modern.
@@suedeciviii7142 Oh, I didn't think of that! Thanks for the info - you indeed don't want to do that to yourself in singleplayer, hahaha!
Finally more educational stuff
I also relish the educational stuff
The calvary unit is the best unit in the game make a hundred of those and send it against the enemy best unit before tanks
Depends on the difficulty. You don't really need bombardment on low difficulties, but on high difficulties you'll lose too many cavs because the enemy just has so many units
KING OF CIV 3
"Hey people" lol
Love your videos. Thanks.
On DM and above standard warriors don't cut it vs barbs anymore.
Now that I think about most of the games I win involve 100 bombers in the farthest reaching city with 100 or so modern armors cleaning up after them.
Hey can is there a way we can control how many goody huts spawn? Is it more with more Civs? Different settings like 3 billion, arid, huge map etc?
Not really. "No barbarians" = no huts. That all. Oh, obviously more land = more huts.
@@suedeciviii7142 got it and then with culture flipping cities is there a ratio of corruption to something I should be worried about?
@@Steve.Crenshaw There's a lot factors that go into culture flipping but corruption isn't one of them.
Biggest ones are, presence of foreign tiles in the cities big fat cross, and foreign citizens in the city. If both those numbers = 0, chance to flip = 0
Other factors
Distance to each civ's capital
Is the city revolting?
Global culture ratio.
@@Steve.Crenshaw If you have more little technical questions like that I'm actually streaming tonight at 6PM EST. These are useful questions that come up a lot and more people will hear the answers that way :)
@@suedeciviii7142 so then what is the benefit of building courthouses?
Thabk you very much!
Imo infantry should be on the list
Great vid tho!
Yeah I'd put them in 6th or 7th place.
Why not horseman on the list? Horses are first mobile unit that can actually attack and move across all tiles, they can be upgraded to both knight and cavalry, not to mention all the Chiv/MT UUs, and they often don't die because they retreat, so your investment is safer.
Also, what unit is better? Worker or Bomber?
Let's compare.
Rifles and cavs are the same shield cost.
Rifles and cavs have roughly the same Attack and defense stats (4/6 vs 6/3). Cavs have 2 more movement points.
Horses and swords also are the same shield cost.
Swords have 50% more attack, and 100% more defense. Remember, combat is based on ratios so this is an enormous difference in combat power. And horses only get +1 move to compensate.
There's a few other factors obviously but this one is so monstrous that the rest is a non-issue. It's the same reason chasquis are worse than archers. Movement points doesn't compensate for high shield cost and low combat power.
I mean, horses aren't bad, but I wouldn't place them at 6th or 7th place. Those spots would probably go to the infantry and the knight, maybe the archer.
@@suedeciviii7142 But wouldn't you wanna build more horsemen than archers? At least generally speaking? They are gonna be useful throughout the game, and with the retreat the shield cost isn't as high as it looks because they tend to survive longer than non-retreating units
@@r00kie36 Archers are cheaper, available earlier, and have defensive bombard.
I'd say archer rushes and horse rushes are equally effective.
But archers are more versatile in other contexts.
I know this is about Best Units but Jesus 2:26 who put so many cities? :O
It's literally the highest scoring Civ3 game of all time. It's not my save file, see the description.
@@suedeciviii7142 We need a video just on that game. I was so confused when I saw it lol.
@@Live01Legends You'd have to find the guy on CFC and ask for the saves, I don't have them.
With artillery, Cavalry can easily take cities way into the game, easily wiping out Mech inf which has been sufficiently weakened.
What the hell was that save with the numbered cities
Check the video description
Depends on tactics. I usually keep developed enemy cities, so why destroy a perfectly good marketplace, factories and other non-culture buildings with bombers? With a nice stack of artillery (best unit;) and cavalry, you don't really need bombers at all..
By the time you have bombers you don't really need buildings. You have all the tools to close out the game. Bombers are also faster at what they do. I'd rather take 10 cities than take 7 cities + the buildings inside.
But you're right, it does depend on the map you're playing on and the game situation. I've realized a lot of my past videos were biased towards the map types I prefer.
I can beat the game on Sid but I have to do some serious cheesing to manage it and stacking the odds in my favor.
same
@@suedeciviii7142 I mean turning on random seed and save scumming for great scientists and armies :p
2:55 can you explain this strategy?
Use settlers to plant cities so your artilleries in range of the city, then conquer with cavs, then railroad and repeat. The only limit is the number of units you have, not the distance your stack needs to travel.
@@StevieKIDS True. Also at some angles there's no way to plant a city that has borders in range of the enemy city.
I have to say, i've completely missed the whole section of Artilery , wtf happened on that map for Maya to get that much cities in 1 TURN?!
The Hall Of Fame website only has 1000 AD and 2050 AD. I don't know. But someone later told me about a strat where you just rail through enemy land, plant cities so you can use enemy railroads, and just smash. I'm pretty sure that's what this is.
I kinda figured it was a ROP steal kill or something.
@@rabdag591 That might have been part of it, but check the replay, a bunch of cities appear between the enemy cities he's capturing.
There is one issue with bombers... they are so time intensive to use. So are most things by that point in the game to be fair
Press the "Z" key to zoom out and turn off combat animations. They're pretty quick. Also a lot easier to setup in place than artillery.
@@suedeciviii7142 never thought of zoom out... but then i also never use artillery either, so noob alert. I dislike no combat animations because its harder to tell how many units there are and how the battle went
bombers? i am not sure. i just place 10 flags into the city and 10 bombers are gone quite soon
Infantry in number 6 maybe? It's truly disappointing doing well until the industrial era just to realize that you can't build the infantry while your strongest rivals can. I simply start a new game xD
Use artillery to counter them! But yeah they're pretty good. I'd say 6 through 8 would be infantry archer and knight.
bomber
Do top 5 civ 3 waifus.
Obviously modern armor +
Not the 1 tile nuke sub Cruz +?...
No wait I got it! It’s then muskets! Never find a more cost effective unit in the world than that.
How about worst units? If you dont feel like making a video just comment it here lol but i would surely give you a view
There's so many. Paratroopers come to mind though. And cruise missiles. Cruises are worse I think.
@@suedeciviii7142 ah got it. Build max paratroopers and aid them with cruise missiles. Im gonna try that on my chieftain game lol
@@suedeciviii7142 Any mods possible that could make paratroopers useful in some fun way? I play my own mod with tons of changes and I've never been able to come up with something that makes paratroopers worth it. Oh and I modded the WW2 in Pacific paratroopers into my game with advanced flight, which upgrade into modern paratroopers with with a modern era tech I can't recall at the moment...both have upgraded attack and defense but not much different than normal infantry.
Me: Huh, I'm surprised Ivan the ABSOLUTE UNIT isn't on this list.
Brother: ... You do realize that this isn't an FGO unit list?
Me: *Re checks the title* You're right... Still wish there was a Fate mod for Civ III
