I Made This RUSTIC FARMHOUSE DINING TABLE from a DOOR!

  • We recently moved into our new home and now we need furniture. I wanted to build as much of the furniture as I could so everything matches the rest of the house and trim. With Thanksgiving rapidly approaching, we needed a new dining table that seats six people. The cost of furniture has become almost unaffordable, and the quality is sub-par at best, so I managed to build a custom farmhouse dining table with leftover materials and an unused door slab. We absolutely love the result of this unique, one-of-a-kind piece, and it matches all of our interior doors!

You do excellent craftmanship with your furniture building. Better construction than one you could purchase at a furniture store. Beautiful too. This furniture will last unlike the particle board furniture that is sold today.

I love your inspirational idea of using a door for your dining tabletop. Fifty years ago, I purchased a 60" round drop leaf pine table which served our family very well. Since all my children's families are in homes of their own, I have wanted to replace the large round tabletop with a rectangular one, which would reduce the floorspace needed with the six chairs around. Your beautifully built tabletop is very much what I had envisioned; so, now I only have to find a local craftsman who could build me something very similar. Thank you for sharing your wonderful skills and ideas with us. Your entire home is gorgeous.

Wahooo!! Outstanding work! I LOVED IT! I think it so important to look at things and appreciate their original intent and the beauty of it but...a door that can't be used as a door anymore is screaming "I can be more!" You hear the voice of the material... that's the key! A Starbucks we were going to decided to move 300 yards to the street side in a lot to make room for drive thru capability. We happened to be there when the garbage bins had just been filled with the "old" material. Of which they threw away the solid oak topped little tables😳... of course...I said...no no no... that's not trash, that's my new center island top!! So 4 of those tables tops became part of an island top for our kitchen. I mean, most of us don't need 3 1/2 ft squared tables to sit at... but we wanted an island and wanted solid wood to do litchenburg burns and epoxy designs on. It turned out gorgeous. Just like that there memory making table! A thing of beauty! Smiles and blessings...

Man, that table turned out awesome! You aren't kidding about today's furniture quality being sub-par at best! I bought a head board for my king sized bed recently and paid quite the kings ransom too. It weighs hardly anything and feels like it was put together with particle board cut offs and staples. I love your idea of matching everything you build to the house and trim!! Can't wait to see you and the family enjoying dinner from that table! Be well sir!

Great Job. A harvest table is perfect for the home. Most people would have gone out and purchased a table that would cost a couple thousand dollars (or more). You did it with materials that would have sat for years. Way to show people they can use their imagination and create something beautiful. One thing more you might consider is to place skids on the bottoms of the posts so that movement won't mar your floors.

I recommend to anyone who can build their own furniture to do so. Excluding your time, it is less expensive to build your own and you will have a better quality piece of furniture that should last a lifetime. (Manufactured furniture isn't made to last very long anymore.) A year ago we had purchased new furniture from a large furniture store that does business all across the country. It was advertised as solid wood and we went with it because we thought it was nicer than some of the store's cheaper furniture, but the tag on the back talked about wood fiber and industrial particleboard. I'm not sure what it is but there were a lot of problems with most of the pieces and the company wiggled their way out of warranting most of the pieces which apparently their biggest complaint. We basically spent almost $10,000 on junk. My husband did build the bed frames and is going to do the rest of the pieces we need. Then he is going to have to repair 8 of the 12 pieces we bought and three of them are going to be near impossible to repair if they are not solid wood and cannot be sanded and re-stained. Also, look into maybe using shellac instead of polyurethane as polyurethane most likely will yellow over time.
