This was my favorite dish growing up. I thought my mom was the only one throwing french fries in it. She was not alone. RIP mom and thanks Ida @sweets and beyond !
This makes me miss my grandmother SOOOOOOO much! Anyway, also my one of my favorite meals growing up, which is why I'm currently scouring the internet to find a recipe. I think I found the winner right here!
You are sooooo patient with us Puerto Ricans who just never cooked our d-lish foods because our abuelitas did ALL the cooking! Que Dios Te Bendiga Siempre! Mucha Gracias!
Thank you!!! Made this dish about a month ago and just made it again tonight, came out banging!!!! My abuela would be proud! 🇵🇷 🇵🇷🇵🇷 I think you start uploading more cooking videos again!
I don’t care what no one says about it being “poor man’s food” this is childhood to me living in Carolina, PR. Con papas frita, un huevo frito, con arroz. This is instant memories.
I’m so glad u made this video! My mom died suddenly at 58 two years ago. This was one of my favorite dishes she made. I made it twice per ur video and it tastes exactly like hers!! Thanks for the post!
I grew up English speaking in a Spanish speaking house hold I never got to bond with my grandmother so I could learn how she cooks..this was my fave dish growing up I could eat plates and plates of This. Thanks for this
one of my favorite dishes.... I fry the potatoes the same day and add them and they do not break up at all, they still have a bit of crisp actually and sweet plantain instead of fries is delicious as well!!
I told my girl to bring me a can of corn beef hash and she came back with corn beef. Its been a hot min since I have made this,so I told her leave it there cause ill make it for her next week as soon as I refresh my memory in how to make it again.Thank you for the video Sweets and Beyond.
Thank you for the tip with the French Fries, my Room mate is Puerto Rican I'll tell her about it. We take turns cooking I'm Trinidadian and Venezuelan, she likes my food and I like hers. I feel very fortunate to have a puerto Rican room mate that can cook. Thanks again.
I haven’t made this in over a decade. Probably since my father passed away. It literally was one of my favorite things to eat. I just needed a kick in the right direction so I can make it again. Thank you so much for bringing back my childhood and memories
I always forget the process... but I always watch this video to make it the way you make it mami..... it’s such a great way to learn. And you do a great job, explaining every process. Thanks again.
Love this recipe ! Since my husband is puerto rican i wanted to learn to cook some traditional puerto rican dishes and im so glad i came across your videos!
It’s been two years since your last video. You’re one of the best Puerto Rican cooks on YT. I learned & tried some recipes and they came out great. Enjoyed your videos. Hope all is well. GOD BLESS🙏🏾
Thank you thank you thank you! You are a life saver! My mom died before I could ask her for any and every recipe she used to cook for dinners and holidays. And then I came across your RUclips videos and thought "this is all the food mami made!". Thank you once again Ida.
I just wanted to thank you!!! You literally helped me (I'm 20 years old) feed my three starving friends. You are like god to me now thank you thank you thank you it came out so good
Idk if this video is old or new but I have to say I'm so thankful for videos like these because I am a college graduate and I will be getting my own place soon. Cooking is not one of my specialties lol but once I know how to do it I always do it perfect so thank you for you wonderful instructions. Great video!!
I had this about a month ago, my mom made it and it was amazing, she was telling me about it and how as a young kid I would eat it up! But for some reason I couldn't remember ever eating it. My mom boiled her potatoes first and then added it to the mix. I love how similar yet different our people do dishes.
Found you while searching for carne guisada and so glad I did. You cook like my mom, she doesn't measure so I don't either. The only thing we do different is we don't freeze the sofrito. We cut and onion, pepper, crush garlic each time. I don't use culantro bc my husband hates it. I'm going to try your mofongo next and Piccadilly. Can't wait!
My mom showed me the spoon trick when I first learned how to cook. haha i love it cuz i know I have jus the right amount of water and rice. My mom does corned beef with pasta or potatoes now but I remember the French fries when I was younger. thanks for the video i look forward to seeing more.
Wow - looks delicious! I have a friend that uses a very similar, if not exact, corned beef mixture, without the fries, to use in his alcapurrias. I think the flavor of the corned beef mixture in the alcapurrias has a superior flavor to the traditional picadillo. Thank you for sharing.
Omg this is my favorite meal. Hands down ate it everyday in puerto rico Umm is so good, gracias for showing bow to make it I forgot how to make it puerto rican style, muchas gracias! Love your cooking videos. Is so easy to learn it cause of the way you teach, keep up the good work!
I am 8 months pregnant and girlllll let me tell you I just made this ! Instead of the French fries I just cut my own potatoes and added them in and I also added corn ! It was so yummy !
we grew up eating it with corn in it!!... I make the fries a few min before cooking pop then in the fridge and it comes out amazing!!!..oh and a side of fried plantains!! yum!!
Wow that was really cool. In the Bahamas we love Corned Beef and White Rice~! We've nicknamed it "Fire Engine" and you're right it is regarded as a poor mans meal. But I tell ya, once its cooked it's GONE~! lol. Thank you for sharing and I think I will try it your way. BTW I visited PR a few years back and fell in love with a dish called 'Mofongo' do you have a down home recipe for that?
quick and easy just how I like a meal when I don't want to cook and this meal looks so tasty too. i've never heard of the rice tip before thanks for sharing it!
I cook it exactly the same but add a 1/4 cup ketchup and sweet babanaa instead of french fries.. Sweet and savory at its best!! Mmmm. Im making some tonight!!
Like your recipe I basically make the same but I make the French fries while cooking the corned beef and rice. Once I served we put the fries on top of the corned beef.
i know ima true boricua.im actually makin corned beef now but i dont put oil i put a lil water and i dont use fries i use platano maduro. i never liked the fries!.. this will definitely be my go to when i need recipes . im subscribed!!!
I have watched a few and I like your style! I've made these dishes and yours are so similar. For some reason though your Sofrito texture is closes to mine and I think I stay following you!!!
My mom had to teach my tío's wife how to cook corned beef with the fries (since the way my mom makes it has been his favorite since he was young). We make the fries fresh with the meal and add canned corn after it's done.

Lolololol No Pumpkin… my mom used to throw French fries in our corn beef as well. She would throw corn and also amarillos as well. It was so yummy!!!!
My Mom would cut up potatoes to a French fry shape and throw them in the corn beef after frying them.
Now I add tiny boiled potatoes
This makes me miss my grandmother SOOOOOOO much! Anyway, also my one of my favorite meals growing up, which is why I'm currently scouring the internet to find a recipe. I think I found the winner right here!
