How to make Puerto Rican Picadillo(Boricua style)

- Today's video is a classic Puerto Rican dish, picadillo. Picadillo is our version of chili without beans or sloppy Joe meat and is used as a main meal or as a filling for a lot of dishes like Pastelon de papa (Potato lasagna) empanadillas or empanadas and many others. I usually make a double batch of it, serve with surprise white rice; then save the rest for empanadillas (fried meat filled turnovers).
Ingredients for the Picadillo:
2lbs ground beef ( I used 90% lean)
1 8oz can tomato sauce
1 envelope Ham seasoning
1 envelope Sazon Knorr
Minced Garlic
3 tablespoons or 3 cubes sofrito
Cumin and Oregano
Olives with pimentos
Fresh cilantro
Adobo Goya to taste
Buen Provecho!

I'm not an experienced cook, and as a boring white guy I'm not even real familiar with Puerto Rican dishes, but my wife is Puerto Rican and has been longing for the kind of food she used to eat as a kid. So I found your videos today, made a shopping list, cooked as I watched you on my phone in front of the stove, turned on some El Gran Combo and surprised my wife when she came home from work. She LOVED the food! She does have one complaint however... she's so full she says she can't even move.
love it...wheppa.
El gran combo in the kitchen hits different 👌
good man you are
That's so sweet!
Just wanted to let you know, it's 10 years later and I *still* look at/reference your videos when I want to make some Puertorican food.
Thank you for making these videos.
Same! I call her my Tia because I depend on her videos so much😊
Me too!!! This is the best recipe ever
Thanks for the tutorial. I'm Puerto Rican but I was raised by my dad. I learned how to make rice and beans and how to season meat but my dad didn't teach me everything. I'm trying to learn new dishes. I'm pretending your my aunt teaching me how to cook. :)
yayi241 You're welcome!
@@sweetsandbeyond gracias Titi!!!
Me tooo. My dad raised me... wepaa to single mom dads.. ❤❤❤❤❤❤ he taught me some, and I learned as I grew.. but Ida's recipes are the closest I get to my childhood comida. Oxoxoxox blessings your way...❤❤❤❤❤❤
OMG! When I was a young teen in PR, my neighbor taught me how to make rice using the standing spoon method to ensure the right rice/water ratio. That was 35 years ago and everyone I told said they never heard of that. I lived en Aguas Buenas at that time. You’ve brought me a wonderful memory! Thank you!
Hello Ida..i married a PR man 5 yrs ago and wanted to learn to cook PR food for him and so I began watching your videos. I am held on high here for all I learned from you. My husband says some of the recipes I have perfected in the 5 yrs are better then his Mamas! I am so thankful to you. 💜🙏 We are departing to Colorado to develop some property to retire on and will be RV living for a while. I have been putting together a small cookbook for us and our crew and your Picadillo is a starred page for our ground beef section. Thank you thank you ! Sincerely Kelley Acevedo aka Dessert Mamita

My husband is Puerto Rican and I'm full on Mexican and for the past year he's eaten nothing but Mexican food besides the times we go out and buy p.r food. so hopefully now I can surprise him with some type of Puerto Rican food he can come home too
How'd it come out? I'm a little curious, lol.

My Puerto Rican boyfriend said it tastes Mexican😩
@@andreaseawell-torres8306 I'm the same boat. Puerto Rican boyfriend and everything I make tastes like Mexican food 😔
BlackMamba girl we can’t win lol I loved the recipe and I am from Belize which has a lot of Mexican influences so maybe I’m putting a twist to the way I prepare my food 🤷🏽♀️
I love you Ida! Seriously! Your step by step instructions and the way you make sure we get it right makes me proud to be Puerto Rican 😃 Much Love Ida for All You do and have done to help me (more than you'll ever know) ❤❤

I'm an american with very little hispanic cuisine experience. I've been married to a Puerto Rican man from Rincon for a year now, you are a LIFE SAVER! I love you :D!
I wish the colleges would offer classes in Puerto Rican cuisine in California. I would have definitely taken them when I was a student. Thanks to RUclips, I get a second chance at life! You are a marvelous cook!
OMG!!!! I'M SOOOO EXCITED!! THIS IS MY FIRST TIME EATING PUERTO RICAN FOOD and I just LOVEDDDD it!!! I made your sofrito, pigeon peas with rice, and picadillo. You Go Girl !!!!
Welcome to the family!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Love that you’re so patient and that you explain everything in detail, wish i had a teacher like you when i was learning how to cook, thanks for sharing!
This is amazing. It had been so long since I made this dish. When my kids were small I would add a can or some frozen green beans and served it with white rice and sweet plantains. Cant wait to make those alcapurias. My husband is Irish American and loves my puerto rican food. So glad to have a guide to these delicious foods. Just like my grandma made. Gracias
You are a pleasure to listen to , first in English I can share with those that can’t speak Spanish.....love your recipes...keep them coming
I use this picadillo for filling my enchiladas, and especially for my tamales. I have a 32cm Concord Cookware 3 Tier Steamer Steam Pot, so I can steam two dozen corn husk, or banana leaf wrapped tamales at one time. Even though I've exactly followed this recipe several times, I'm still amazed that such a simple picadillo can taste so terrific! I freeze them and reheat them as needed. Sweets and beyond, thank you very, very much for clearly presenting this wonderful recipe! El hombre guapo, gran cocinero, en Sarasota
Awww thank you for the kind words!
Making this again tonight. It has become a staple and family favorite in my house. Thanks, Aida!
@raquel massanet Your comments are wekcomed! More videos are coming soon. Thank you for your kind words.
I love how organized you are when cooking. It's a sign of a good chef.
I just wanted to thank you for posting your videos, I've been following you for about a year now and I wasn't so great at cooking. Now I can cook a whole lot better and so flavorful thanks to your videos. I'm Dominican but cook more with a Puerto Rican hint lol my husband loves it.
+Marianellys Ciriaco You're welcome!

Thank you for this recipe! I'm Mexican American and sometimes cooking for my Puerto Rican/Dominican husband is very hard. We both like things the way we like them. I made this for him last week and he couldn't stop saying how much he loved it!! Making it again tonight!!! Glad he turned me on to your channel.
I love reading this! So happy for you!
That look nasty
That's your opinion. It's delicious to me!
OK. Now

I just made this and I feel like I just went back in the Delorean to 1985 in my abuelita's kitchen and I'm so happy. Thank you @Sweets and Beyond you the best Ida!
Ida! I just want to thank you for sharing this recipe!! I love to cook and often I'm looking for something different to make... I followed your instructions and it turned out delicious. I have made Picadillo before but your recipe is the best....and you're right the Ham flavoring sets it off!! Thanks again 😘
Just made this! Didn't have tomato sauce so i used canned diced tomatoes and didn't have cilantro either.. but definitely still delicious! ! Thank you! My family LOVED it! Will be trying all your recipes & commenting lol
You know that's an old tradition in measuring the rice and water I am 65yrs and growing up both my parents did it that way always perfect rice :)
Hi, I'm 7 months pregnant and I started watching your videos like 3 years ago and i just made this dish today and it was amazing. Thank you so much! :)
I made this today! Since i used 1lb beef i only used 3t Adobo and 1T olives, 1/2 & 1/2 sazon and ham seasoning. A little too salty for my liking so i added 1.5t tomato paste and a pinch of sugar. Going to let it sit overnight to let it all come together. So far it's very delicious! Used my own Sofrito from your recipe as well. Thank you!
I made this and did not have ham seasoning so I used cut up ham, it came out delish! Family loved it. Today I will try it with the ham seasoning.
I fancy myself a pretty good cook, especially when it comes to Puerto Rican food, but I gotta say that this channel is awesome! I like watching how others cook in the hopes of learning something new or different. I have managed to pick up a few things here and there watching how you prepare and cook your meals. Great channel!
I made this for empanadas on New Years it was such a big hit people absoulty loved this Picadillio. I'm Tex-mex I don't cook Puerto Rican food but you have changed that....THANK YOU
I have made this so many times for a bunch of people, and everyone loves it. Tonight, I made empanadas, and my family loved them. They were so stinking delicious! I’m not sure I ever want to make this without doubling the batch, so I can pull out half before adding water. Just so I can have empanadas too! Thank you for the videos; you explain so clearly! Great job!
I just used this VERY recipe for the second time tonight and I'm telling you it smells amazing. Im waiting for my boyfriend to get home so I can dig in! The last time I made this I forgot the ham seasoning, but this time I had it and it made a difference when I was cooking. Your videos are very nice, very direct, and just the right amount of details so I can follow along as I was cooking. Thank you.
slimjimbk78 You're welcome! Glad you liked it!
This delicious, I put it over macaroni instead of rice, so it was Puerto Rican beef a roni LOL. My family says thank you!!!! *Lydia*
Old school Glam now i know what im making for dinner!

angela ? from central ..
sounds amazing
I also use this picadillo to make a Puerto Rican style goulash or "Beef-a-roni". My parents are from San Lorenzo, PR, well into their 80s, and they absolutely love it! I make it every other week in a large batch that serves 3 or 4 meals, refrigerate and they plate, nuke and eat when they want to. My go to when I want to go golfing, fishing or just get away for a short break. Thank you, Ida!
OMG, the nostalgia. I feel like I just traveled back in time, to when I was about 7-8 years old, standing next to my mama as she cooks some of my favorite dishes. You get my sub just for that.
Thank you so much. You are my favorite channel for PR food.
Just made this for pastelon. Omg sooo good! Thanks for sharing this!
I just did this and it smells so good at home right now. You weren't kidding about first adding the ham seasoning. Yummy!!! Buen provecho y gracias :D
I just finished making this and omg I love it!!! Can’t wait to make it for dad! 🇵🇷 Thank you for your step by step recipes!
This time I cooked along with you, I followed your instructions exactly, the picadillo came out so good, and it's so easy too. my family loves it.

I’ve tried a few of your recipes and they all come out so good. Appreciate your simple and direct instructions. Thank you.
Lo prepare ahora mismo para mi esposa y me quedo brutal. Muchas gracias por el tiempo!!! Bendecida!!!
Girl! That recipe was delish, I made it using ground turkey and a package of ground turkey sausage (cause I had it)
Didn’t have adobo so I seasoned w salt, garlic, culantro, oregano and cumin, mixed it well following your instructions, then added the chicken bouillon cause I didn’t have the ham one, and an envelope of culantro y achiote Goya packet seasoning, mixed some more, added 8 oz of premade pasta sauce by paul Newman 😂 cause that’s all the tomatoe sauce I had, and then added the fresh cilantro in the end. I must say it’s been the best picadillo I have ever made, thanks to u! Also love your mannerism and the way you come across is very appealing and real, keep it up. This quarantine is making me very creative in the kitchen and im so happy to have great cooks like u to fall back on🙏🏼👊🏼🥰
i used ground turkey too !! it was very juicy
I had everything for the sofrito, except the Cubanelle; I used bell pepper in it's place; it worked well!
You’re a poet and you don’t even know it.

Thank you for sharing! I’m Mexican and my husband is Puerto Rican . I am excited to try this for him . We went to Orlando over the weekend and went to the food trucks and ate so much Puerto Rican food and he was so happy 😀 ! I am definitely going to try this with the white rice of course.
I made it with you idea of putting in a ham bullion, my family love it (didn't have Goya so I use the knorr)...Thank you :-)
Making this recipe at this moment. The sauce is delicious! I made it exactly as you said except I added potatoes and diced onions. Great recipe!
We (in Ponce) also add potatoes and onions ...also peppers and olives. (sometimes we add chopped boiled eggs , for the Empanadillas filling) :)
Did you cook the potatoes first?
So did I because when I added 1 1/2 T. of GOYA Adobo, it was too salty. I also added SunMaid Golden Raisins;) That bit of sweetness is a pleasant surprise!
Yes, but don’t overcook or they will be like mashed potatoes. Boil or steam just until a knife can easily pierce them, cool and then dice;)
HB eggs are a nice addition as well for empanadillas & papas rellenas filling.
@@acomerboricuafoodlifestyle4352 yes, my MIL was from Yauco and added the same things. Scrumptious!
OH MY GOODNESS!!! I made this and it was sssooo GOOD!! thank you for sharing I adjusted it a little and used ground turkey, smoked paprika, onion powder and garlic powder. I did not use sofrito I used a salt free seasoning with spices because my boyfriend doesn’t like onions but this was a way he couldn’t tell it had onions in it. Thanks again
she is amazing the way she explained all receipts. thanks
Well, I'm new to your videos, so I will have to look up your white rice recipe, or what you use (as there are so many types of white rice) ;)
