  • It's not everyone's favorite, but if you like canned corned beef, you probably can't get enough of the stuff. And if you don't like it? Maybe you just haven't ever tried the right kind. While canned corned beef originally was created out of necessity as a kosher substitute for Spam to feed soldiers, it quickly became a pantry staple in the U.S., as well as in countries like Jamaica and the Philippines.
Something that popular has to be pretty good, but some brands most assuredly stand out from the pack, for both good and bad. These are canned corned beef brands, ranked from worst to best.

I'm sitting in Sydney right now, I live here. Never heard of Ox & Palm corned beef. When I was at sea on the ocean liners it was well known that Australian corned beef came way down the list of desirability. Having eaten corned beef for nigh on 80 years I can say that cold is best. Hot only with potatoes, never on its own.
Tinned corned beef is not salt junk, the sea term for corned beef, which is basically salt pumped (pickled) or just salted beef, which is better than tinned if one wants hot food. Though both tinned and salt junk are great cold.

You mentioned Argentina corned beef which is a Filipino brand but it's not remotely the best corned beef in the Philippines. That distinction goes to Purefoods corned beef. Like other local corned beef brands in the Philippines, the consistency is not as mushy like in Libby's or Hereford. Here the consistency is more meaty like shredded pastrami and has a lot more juice. Purefoods has that and overall better flavor and meatiness. A close second is Delimondo. Argentina is considered of lower quality here, a more affordable, cheaper option.

Do you first fry the corned beef hash in cooking oil in a frying pan and put the egg on top of the corned beef hash in and above the the hash already in the pan? Or do you cook (fry) the hash until it is completely browned and THEN put the egg in the pan on top of the already cooked hash?

I find Brookdale on line with prices ranging from $14.00 per can to 3 for $25.24. As these are 12 oz. cans, the per pound cost exceeds that of fresh corned beef sold at sandwich shops in my area. But those national brands of corned beef hash are indeed quite good!!!

Corned beef even if cooked from corned or salted brisket does have a certain amount of beef fat. If cooking with canned corn beef the main error is adding to much of additional oils when cooking with onions and cabbage. Chilling a can before opening to eat straight out of a can is another tip, as the excess fat can be isolated. Before spam from the US was made available in WW2 the main canned meet supplied to British and Commonwealth troops as combat rations was corned beef. The bully beef and biscuit (Hard tack in thinned biscuit style) was a field ration staple along with what ever was available plus the ubiquitous vitamin C tablets.

I have tried the blind taste test between Libby's, Hereford, and Walmart. All three have an identical stamp on the metal top which states it's a product of Brazil and contains the same identifying information, product and official inspection numbers. They taste the same to me and have the same texture. Save your money next time and buy the best priced of what you find on the shelf the day you're looking for it. Oh, and if you're making your own hash with it try substituting boiled turnip root for the potatoes. Uhm good.

Here in the Philippines, "Virginia" brand is most popular -- because customers consider COST and TASTE. If money is no object, "Purefoods" -- which has the Hormel license -- is the best local brand. Purefoods also sells "Chunky Corned Beef", a low-cost but high flavor product. Canned CB is sold by every store -- BUT -- FRESH CB is very difficult to find in the supermarkets. Purefoods Chunky CB is what I buy, even if I can easily afford the imported Hereford and Libby brands.
