We tried 17 national steakhouses chains, and even though there were a lot of worthy competitors, only one can be crowned the king of steakhouses.

Back when beef prices were actually reasonable, going to steakhouses were a good thing. But nowadays, I could buy 3 to 4 prime choice cut steaks and cook it myself for the price of dining at one steakhouse restaurant. Not only that, I still have money leftover to buy ingredients for fantastic sides and desserts. For those of us who don't have Bill Gates income, grilling your own steak is the way to go.

I’d have to disagree. The key to a great steak is starting with a great piece of meat. Even the greatest chef can only elevate a crappy cut so much. And that’s where most “mid-level” steakhouses fail. On the other hand, high end steakhouses like Ruth’s Chris are able to get the absolute best cuts because they do so much volume. They also tend to be able to hire the best staff for much the same reason.
Having said that, I can guarantee you that in almost every city that has a Ruth’s Chris there is at least one steakhouse that is at least as good, and probably much better, and probably has a more authentic ambiance and will be a more memorable experience.

As ZombifiedWatermelon wrote, "Chain restaurants can vary wildly in quality from location to location." I'd like to see Mashed make a video on each chain's consistency. Is a Longhorn in Seattle equal to a Longhorn in Miami? How are company standards enforced by each chain's management? Also, I wouldn't mind knowing how many locations the Mashed team visited. If they made their decision that Outback isn't good by visiting only 2 or 3 locations (going back to ZombifiedWatermelon's statement), that isn't enough samples.

Last time my ribeye was literally like 30% chewy fat. So they brought me another and wasn’t much better. Not to mention they always seem to fail getting the temp I ordered right. Longhorn has gone downhill as well, I think they’re buying cheaper grade meats these days but still better than Outback. Was surprised to see Longhorn right behind Ruth’s Chris in this video. All of their portions are very large. As long as you like your steak cooked the same way, two people can split the New York strip, and split a side or two and be perfectly happy and content. The waiters will even tell you that the side dishes will serve 2 to 3 people. And they have always cut that steak in half for me in the kitchen. It ends up costing about the same as any of the other steak houses except the food is 10 times better. I recommend the potatoes Lyonnaise and the chop salad for my two sides.

Out of every steakhouse I’ve even eaten at I’ve found that Texas Roadhouse has been the most consistent and compared to other steak houses you know what you get for your money. Longhorn is a good second. Don’t get me wrong I’ve had excellent steaks at high end steakhouses for big bucks. But as far as chains go Texas Roadhouse and longhorn always deliver. And I prefer Texas Roadhouse over longhorn because of the sides and apps they offer, but that’s personal preference.
Other steak houses I like are Texas land and cattle company and ironically the big Texan, the latter because it was always a stop on family vacations as a kid. There are a couple of places I like in Las Vegas too but again good steak big price. However none of these are chains.
Saltgrass is ok, I’ve never had anything that was “bad” there but it’s not a place I just have to eat. Outback has declined so badly that we would rather go to Golden Corral instead.

We generally eat there 3 times a month as we live in a rural area and my wife runs 3 daycares. So we go every week for supply runs. Usually we spend an entire day in “the big city” and have a small family day in between 4-5 shopping trips. Always consist of a fast food trip and a sit down meal. So we’ve sampled about every eatery in the general area we shop. The off meal usually is either a Tex mex place or Italian. Occasionally (like once a year) we get reservations for a Japanese steak house. Which also is always good, but about twice what I pay at Texas Roadhouse.

Had my first Capital Grille visit last month for a dinner. Gotta say I am very satisfied. Service was extremely attentive and friendly, the waiter knows the menu well, and recommended a special cut of bone-in filet mignon special to the day. Steak was cooked to perfection, charred and crispy on the outside but juicy and flavorful on the inside. Lobster bisque and lobster tail was also done beautifully.Total was about $180 for a three course meal with soup, surf and turf, and dessert. Would highly recommend a try.

Select your choice of ribye (vary by location/time), and enjoy not only their steak and sides, but also the buns. When you are a traveler, which I was before the Pandemic, most of these TEXAS ROADHOUSE places are a decent steak. THey don't often overwhelm you but they rarely disappoint. When I cannot get a recommendation for a local place from my clients, I go there. However - the last three times I went to Longhorn, I actually got Lobster that was so bad I could not cut it and I never try to predict what my medium rare steak will be cooked like either. IF it has no pink, it goes back. I did learn one trick, pay your tip in cash and TELL your waiter that you will BEFORE your order (In any restaurant) for the best service.

I think it's hard to make these kinds of generalizations. I think it'd dependent on, what beef has been supplied to the restaurant, the cook who's grilling it and to a degree, the whole atmosphere of the experience. It also depends on who's dining. I have a very good friend who's upper middle class and has money, but going out to eat is not his thing. He'll complain about paying $40 for a plate of pasta when he could make a similar dish at home for a fraction of that. You can point out, that someone is preparing the meal, bringing to you and cleaning up after and be appreciative of that, and for that person, going out to a nice place will give you a reasonably high degree of a nice evening, but it's not a guarantee.

The BEST Steakhouse is at OUR house. I can grill a steak medium-rare that will satisfy all of my friends. The key is to buy a good cut; like a bone-in Ribeye or a tender Sirloin. Even a well-marbled Chuck Steak. NY Strip of Porterhouse are too grainy for us. And once you leave the world of medium, your steak will no longer be tender. My Dad always ordered his steak well, then I introduced him to medium-rare. The last 20 years of his life, he never ate an overcooked steak again. warm, red center is the way to go. Tracks with my experience with the various steak houses. I see they skipped the Brazilian style ones like Fogo de Chao and Texas de Brazil, I was interested to see how they ranked. Texas Roadhouse is our go to cheap steak place, we have tried many. It does the job remarkably for the price. Flemings Filet is in fact amazing! And the full menu for a special occasion. Ruth's Chris and Shula's are both great for what they are, their steak never disappoints.

I like the steak house on my patio, as we have a fantastic butcher down the street. He has grass fed and this Italian beef, which he assures me was massaged by Swedish Supermodels... That beef was was out of this world, Rib Eye... Cut it with a fork, and the marbling was insane, it melted in your mouth. I cook mine at high heat on my STOK grill, close to 700 degrees as I can get, thick cut around or close to 2" thick, around 8 minutes a side, comes out medium to medium rare... I cannot buy this in a steakhouse, and I have been to a few over the years.

I always had my steaks cut 2 inches thick, I don't know how to grill a thin steak correctly.
Hey, do you use wood or gas on that STOK? Have you cooked a pizza or grill stuff on it?

@@crankychris2 Let's see, I have cooked steaks, which everyone raves about, Salmon came out fantastic, Chicken is awesome and K'Bob's are the bomb. I love this stupid grill. I have not tried Pizza, but it does come with a stone to do just that, I would think Pizza would come out pretty darn good in this grill...
I have had a couple high dollar units, the kids have the high dollar grills/smokers, I forget the name, the real popular ones, not cheap... I was never impressed enough with any of them to recommend to anyone...
I paid around $160 for the STOK, when I moved out to North Dakota, I bought a second one when I was out there for work, it is that good. Home Depot sells them, I have two at the house right now here in Michigan... We use one almost daily in the grilling months. If you like to grill, I would highly recommend the STOK. I laughed when I first saw it, it was a hand me down from the kids who did not like it for some reason... After using it for several years, I would not trade this grill for any of their high dollar stuff, it is that good.
Here is another find, that Ninja Foodi Grill... I cannot get over that either. I cooked a near three pound chuck roast in that thing the other day, I slathered it in olive oil, seasoned with Celtic brand Sea Salt, if you have never heard of this salt, not cheap, get some! Celtic Salt and a steak seasoning, seared it, then slow cooked for around an hour+ at around 250* to 300*, air fry and bake settings, I kind of baby sat and tweaked as I went along... Darn thing cut like butter, medium, nice crust, a Chuck roast! That stuff is normally like shoe leather when grilled or even slow cooked. I could not get over how good it came out, and either could my mother, who lives with me... She predicted disaster when I through it in that grill... I had the last laugh, she loved it, and said she will buy the next Chuck Roast, LOL!
That Ninja Grill is very impressive, chicken and salmon... The air fried Chicken Quarters are the bomb, crispy skin and juicy as all get out... I cannot say I have gotten any bad dishes out of that silly thing. It sits on the counter full time and used almost daily, it is great for bacon and sausages too... I would highly recommend the Ninja Grill too. Hope this helps. ;-)

@@kevinmiller6009 You can like it however you want. You can also love driving slow in the passing lane. Whatever floats your boat. However most people who enjoy steak realize the flavor is mostly in the sear and anycooking you get inside the meat only causes it to be harder to chew not more flavorful.

I am amazed at the waiter’s answer. However, I am surprised that after so many years working at a steakhouse you still ask for medium well steaks. And K you can scoff all you want, but actually people that think like you about the people that correctly state that anything over Medium-rare is wrong are the “smug nitwits”.

My grandpa said some truth when he said meat tastes like cardboard unless you age it and salt it. I think that's true. My partner and I went to Loria Medical in Doral Florida to have our meat enlarged and ordered from Longhorn Steakhouse to go. It was the very best steak we've had other than our own on our grill. The Ribeyes were cooked as ordered and just melted in your mouth.

depends on each place and who makes a steak for you. I had good experience with Outback nearby.
