This channel is the ideal competency level for me. Better mechanic-ing than me so it's still interesting, but still down to earth enough and things going wrong as they normally do when we all so much as touch a bolt.
Great job on the beetle, leather steering wheels make a big difference in how luxurious a car feels, I changed a mini r50 steering wheel to leather recently. I like how you have even the challenges as part of the video when things should go smoothly, I think we all have moments like that and it's great to know we are not alone with those moments of "how did this part become so difficult?".
It’d be cool if you did a side by side comparison of your Mini and the Beetle, showed their strengths/weaknesses. They were main competitors back then, so it’d be neat to hear your thoughts on the two before you sell the beetle!
I have lost a bolt deep within an inaccessible area of my car before and as an amateur the way I resolved this problem was to buy a USB endoscope camera and a flexible pose-able magnetic pick up tool - taping the endoscope camera to the tip of the magnet tool and doing a bit of keyhole surgery - when I saw the bolt I just pushed closer and - click! - magnets are magic. Combined, those tools were about £30 and they are my backup for any other inadvisable modifications I decide to make
Bit of sill welding and a couple of brake lines and it'll be on its way! Pretty typical 18 year old car stuff. My Boxster needed a rear brake line and advisory on rear discs and drop links this time which I didn't think was too bad for 17 years old. Brake line done by the garage to get it through and advisories being sorted this weekend with any luck if the weather holds off.
Things have become much more complicated these days in the 21st Century, when having to remove a Steering Wheel / Airbag, than when I had to remove the Steering Wheel to enable me to remove / change the broken Headlight Control Stalk on my 1981 Russet Brown Austin Maxi 2L FFG 212X in the mid-late 1980s . . . a bit of plastic about one inch long & about 1/5 inch square in section had snapped clean off right across, meaning the Headlight Stalk in normal driving along a road, would pendulum backwards & forwards, between ( & making & breaking ) the electrical contacts, meaning depending on the level of acceleration / braking I was doing at the time, the Main Beam Headlight Flashing was uncontrollable . . . all because of a really small bit of broken plastic . . . "Grrrgh !" N.B. 'Uncle Pete' ( A+ Really Good Family Friend R.I.P. ) who lived very close to me in Merlin Way, when I went to see him, was able to lend me a 1 1/4" Box Spanner with Tommy Bar, from his garage, so I could release the Steering Wheel Retaining Nut, to enable me to get the Steering Wheel off & to tighten the Steering Wheel Retaining Nut back up again afterwards . . . unusually my father ( R.I.P. ) did not have an appropriate tool to get me out of my unfortunate predicament !
Great work Matt. Another one of those simple jobs that requires a visit to the motor factors to get some new goodies. Back in the day, Elliot's in Coventry would have had just the item. but it's now a multi storey complex. Your quote of the day has to be, "not not saying I've dropped a coffee in the footwell yesterday", brilliant!
Isn't it strange how a few little cosmetic details like a worn steering wheel and a few holes in the dash make a massive difference to a car's first impression? A few times I've noticed my local garage dealer eyeballing trade ins, saying stuff like "Leave that radio and speakers," or "Don't remove that old Garmin". It's all suction cups and double sided tape for my car.
Hello my eternal rival. I put about 12 feet of extra chrome trim in my interior, how do you feel about that? 😄 And from factory it already got quite a lot of aluminium trim in many places. I was also thinking of removing the black paint from the speaker grills and polishing them to a nice semi gloss bare metal finish.
Its a lot different from back in the day (1983) when I changed the wheel on my 1976 Mini! Got there in the end Matt! Not everything works according to plan and you have a lot of patience to get to the end, more than me!
You have done such a good job! A very satisfying project indeed. I had a little bit of a struggle getting to the pins on the airbag of my V70 when I fitted the wooden steering wheel! About 34 screwdrivers and a butter knife later I finally got it!
I'm sure you already know this, but keep the car! It's the perfect daily driver. New wheel really lifts the interior - although I would've avoided the polish and gone for the magic sponge clean with some light pressure and APC instead. Turned out great either way!
I did a pollen filter change on a beetle that shape and vw in their genuineness put it deep within the dash and it’s a whole lot of stripping the dash to replace it which was a nightmare and I carpet cleaned my black floor mats out of my bmw at the weekend and the amount of black muckjuice that came out of them I was horrified. If u think your floor mats r clean then think again.
Just Bought a 2003 2.0 sohc in porche red ;) , Its absolutely solid , no rust at all , needs door locks, boot locks and bonnet locks sorted , and rear bearing so far , but nice wee car to drive and nippy enough on the back roads :)
Nice one, for anyone thinking about flipping cars, this could be the ideal money spinner ! Cheap, loads of parts available, lots of knackered beetles on the market… 👍
The more you work on it, the more you want to keep it! It's amazing how the small things like a leather steering wheel and a bit of plastic transform the car. Looking forward to the beetles replacement.
For that other random hole drilled in the dash, just take the black "plug" out of the non-writing end of a (black) BIC biro and shove that in the hole as a grommet and the job's a good un.
When you’ve disconnected your battery, it is a good idea to then put your headlights on which will suck any remaining current out. beetle is in really good condition when you consider the miles on, it has been well maintained and looked after
That hole in the dash can be filled with another happy pink flower to go with the others !! 🤢, . Bye bye golf,,,, sorry, beetle,. Great video Matt 😉🏴👍
Well done Matt a brilliant job on the beetle it has come up very nicely and will be a lovely car for whoever has it! Looking forward to what comes next Daniel
The only thing I got out of this video about you trying to get an absolute dog of a car appear nicer, is the cool jacket you're wearing! 😅Don't get me wrong, still a fan of your channel! 😜
Screwdriver fail! It was going too well, really enjoyed this series, not a car I'd normally be interested in but Matt had a knack of making them engaging.
The car looks superb, you almost talked me into wanting one! The next owner will have a very nice example of the model, it will keep on trucking for another 100K with regular services and some TLC to keep the evil tin worm at bay. I love that colour as well, dark blue is how it appears on RUclips, only my most favourite colour btw. 😁
Nice boot polish tip Matt , yeah I can live with Treat on the backseat 😂, kinda rhymes and yes a shame you can’t keep every car you improve but am sure Mrs Furious would love you to keep them all 😁.
you did a really nice job on the VW, I love them and would like to get a turbo in mechanically good condition with stick. Make it a project car and fix it up nice.
It doesn't matter if you don't have the steering wheel straight when removing as the steering column has a notch in the end that you match up to a notch on the steering wheel so you know it is on 100% straight
This is typical. I swapped the steering wheel on my 2019 Seat Leon only a month or so ago and had to do much research first and generally thinking it's a shame Matt hasn't done a VW wheel swap. And low, here just that video. It also mean, perhaps for the first time ever, I knew something that might have helped you. The principle for removing a VW wheel doesn't seem to have changed in 20 years.
Did the same wheel change on my wife's for about £25 Inc airbag. For mine I used a small flathead screwdriver worked a treat had to pull the steering wheel all out and down. The one on my wife's had a groove on wheel and column to show when it's straight.
Doin a bit o wafflin trying to convince yerself into selling it. Let it go bud. A wee point of order i cannot believe you are actually telling us novices to restain the steering wheel and polish it to a shine.. Hells teeth , ma dear old da would be turning in his box wae that one. Why do you think they are a matt finish in the first place... Anyways excited to see what comes next. 🤗
I've been there with airbagged steering wheels on my W124 coupe. What was mad was having to dismantle half the dash just to replace the indicator lever! No as pro or slick as Matt, but if you fancy a laugh: ruclips.net/video/_DBSSBJ6wXI/видео.html
Always surprises me you can crank the engine with out depressing the clutch that would not happen in a US spec car you would have to sit in it for it to start
This channel is the ideal competency level for me. Better mechanic-ing than me so it's still interesting, but still down to earth enough and things going wrong as they normally do when we all so much as touch a bolt.
Nothing stops Matt, one of the most informative channels for us armchair/ home mechanics
Great job, i love the way you include and share the issues you encounter, most other videos just make everything look perfect- thanks
Did you retrieve the lost screwdriver

A trick for discharging systems (like airbags) is disconnect the battery, then touch the positive and negative battery leads together.
Didn’t know that one. 👍

Loved this series of videos on the Beetle, and also those on the Mondeo. Now looking forward to your next project.👍
Great work Matt. I hope the lost screwdriver doesn't cause a short somewhere.
"treats from the back seat" ..... probably want to rethink that one!?!
its a work in progress...
Great job. My vote for biggest annoyance is people not moving into the left lane when they are no longer overtaking. 😆
What a massive update on this Beetle. Well done Matt, I absolutely believe you would like to keep it. She looks wonderful now.
Loved the edit at 13:30 turning the airbag the right way up 😂
I hated the craze of fitting silver trim on car interiors, glad it's pretty much over now.
Hello my eternal rival. I put about 12 feet of extra chrome trim in my interior, how do you feel about that? 😄 And from factory it already got quite a lot of aluminium trim in many places. I’ve just looked at your MOT result for today. Oh dear. I guess it’s not going to the new owner until it’s been tickled with the welder?
Its a lot different from back in the day (1983) when I changed the wheel on my 1976 Mini!
Got there in the end Matt!
Not everything works according to plan and you have a lot of patience to get to the end, more than me!
Beautiful car in every way.
I for one love this Beetle.

Excellent turnaround Matt, maybe spent a little more than you'd like to have done I bet but someone will have a nice Beetle.
It's actually lane three... 😉 Great video, as usual 👌
is there not 4 lanes on some motorways now.
@@andystephenson7157 Yeah, and some even have five !!
This was a job well done !! Love the series, and kinda makes me want a Beetle now
Excellent job on the beetle matt 👍 already looking forward to the next project.

I think Beryl needs to stay. Perfect daily driver and she looks fantastic! Interior mods are massive improvements 🙌🏼
Great video! Those spline socket tools will not go unused if you own a VW. Lots of things fastened on with spline socket nuts.
Those searingly minor improvements have really transformed and lifted the interior of the oh so cute little Beetle, well done Matt😊.
Just Bought a 2003 2.0 sohc in porche red ;) , Its absolutely solid , no rust at all , needs door locks, boot locks and bonnet locks sorted , and rear bearing so far , but nice wee car to drive and nippy enough on the back roads :)

Hi,Matt love you're honesty when repairing cars wether it's engine or any other, good content as usual looking forward to you're new toy🛠️👍

Love watching you save these cars
Well done, Matt. That car came out something wonderful. The new owner should be very happy indeed.
The more you work on it, the more you want to keep it! It's amazing how the small things like a leather steering wheel and a bit of plastic transform the car. Looking forward to the beetles replacement.
Great result, Matt. I'm sure the next owner will be delighted!
Great vid matt 🐞 has been transformed well done look forward to see what you get next all the best donny
Well done, Mr.F! It's never been my sort of thing, the new 🪲 but in that colour and with the spruce up you've given it, it's really quite alluring! 👍👏
Pretty car now. The Beetle is a car for glass half full people. It's quirky and fun. Unlike Volvos which are, of course, boxy but good.
That loft extension next door looks awful! Good vid!
Try to install the genuine cruise control. It is a nice and very useful upgrade. Furthermore, it is not so difficult or expensive..
For that other random hole drilled in the dash, just take the black "plug" out of the non-writing end of a (black) BIC biro and shove that in the hole as a grommet and the job's a good un.

"The end is too big to fit in there!" Oh really?! LOL.
Well done Matt a brilliant job on the beetle it has come up very nicely and will be a lovely car for whoever has it! Looking forward to what comes next Daniel
I hope the P/E of the Beetle is worth all the work you have put in this car....... You could serve a tea party on that dash 🤔😁😁
Bent and flattened wire coat hanger part works every time

Dont worry, its called the fast lane because you have to go fast to overtake vehicle infront and then back to correct speed🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
and that smurf comment yesterday made me spit my coffee out, so funny
shoe polish gel would have been last thing would av used on the steering wheel matt. other than that good job.
That's an awful lot of matt black plastic under the windscreen, I bet you could fry eggs on it in the summer!
Matt looking good looking forward to whstd next
Yay for fleabay 😭
I'd have cut them and welded abit into them 🤔
As for the draper tool, how much different is it to a torx bit?
it has many more points, 12 I think, so you could mash a torx in there but it would ruin it for next time
fantastic job looks good
Did the same wheel change on my wife's for about £25 Inc airbag. For mine I used a small flathead screwdriver worked a treat had to pull the steering wheel all out and down. The one on my wife's had a groove on wheel and column to show when it's straight.

Beryl looking mint Matty 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Well done 👍 Glad its going to a new home as I still dont like them much Lol
Technically is not called an overtaking lane either. It should be called lane 2 or lane 3, depending if the road has 2 or 3 lanes.
And I believe under the passenger dash panel is the pollen filter
Don’t forget to put the flowers back on the dash
Treats From The Seats.
😊
Good work Matt.
ngl i absolutely love this channel
The removal of that steering would have been impossible without that knowledge. Queue next flip please…….😃
did you reset the airbag?
Does it need to be? Ive not found that on other cars and there are no warning lights
I was going to say can't you repair dash but this was easy to just change.
Put a v6 3.2 in and have blast!
Ita all gone Hubnut.
I think it's a bi-hex rather than a spline. Best not to mix them up.
is it a grey bmw by any chance?
Can I hear a rattle? Sounds like a loose screwdriver inside the dashboard... 😉
Joking aside…it’s a brilliant idea.
Where’s the old merc gone?
in the garage
Shoe polish on the wheel? Steering wheel leather isnt meant to be shiny, shine shows wear, leather should be matte.
Yes, remove the shine with acetone.
Was that a crash damaged Bmw in the background?
Whose is the bent beemer?
neighbour's car
@@furiousdriving Ahh, bloody excellent work on the VW, I can see why this is a hard let go.

Always surprises me you can crank the engine with out depressing the clutch that would not happen in a US spec car you would have to sit in it for it to start
It’s down to it’s age. Newer manual cars here tend to need the clutch depressed, whilst autos need the brake pedal depressed.
@@frimleyfrodo Yeah, I think it was about 2005-2010 most cars started to demand it to be able to start?

I bent a small screw driver to create a custom airbag removal tool
Nice one. But that wheel looks a bit clockwise to me..
very wide lens on the gopro luckily
