Old low mileage cars are often not great at all. Not driven enough and left sitting for long periods which means rubber seals dry out, fuel in the tank is poor quaility when left over time the engine in these types of cars is also used for small trips where the engine hardly gets warm. You are also more likely to get electrical problems as mould and damp infest the car. Old low mileage cars also haven't had many of their parts replaced as there has not been enough use to wear them out completely meaning you get an old car with lots of parts that are near deaths door. Low milage manuals that are old also often have burnt out clutches usually from OAPs who are not fit to drive burning them with poor driving. Any car that has done on average less than 3k a year over its lifetime I would actively avoid for the above reasons. A lot of these old low miles cars are clocked.

After lusting after one of these as a kid, my sister bought a Y-reg hatchback a few years ago for her first car. I was pleasantly surprised how nice it drove...when it wasn't broken 😂 ignition coils, coolant temp sensor, alternator...the list went on. One VW "specialist" had it for weeks trying to figure out some of the electrical issues. She got fed up with it after about 18 months and took out a PCP on a brand new Polo.
@@chriskonte1909 well yeah, people do learn...by making mistakes. And anyway, my sister was fresh out of uni at the time with not a lot of money, and couldn't have known how unreliable the Beetle would be. She still liked the car, it was just disappointing. But she did learn, hence opting to replace it with a brand new car when she could afford to. Given that I said in my original comment that she did so, I think you could've deduced that she had learnt her lesson, so I'm not sure where your comment fits in.
@@joshbrailsford Now it makes a whole lotta sense. Here in the US people love these cars. I just bought a 2006 VW beetle convertible at auction for $400 sat forever with the window partially down. I've been restoring it for 2 weeks now. Here in the US that car fixed is worth about $6,000
I'd love to see what your friend did with the car and whether he turned a profit with it? Intermittent electronics would probably indicate water ingress in control units or wiring somewhere/everywhere in that heap.
One of my favourite videos!! Definitely something to watch on a bad day. Your face when you saw the roof, then windows playing up, cracking springs and someone who clearly wasn't a fan of this car throwing a rock at it lololol 😂😂 Better than all antidepressants. Looking forward to watching more videos
Just picked up a 2006 2.5l Beetle today for $1100. It is easily the cheapest interior I've ever had the displeasure of sitting in. VW really took cost cutting to a new level with that car. I've owned several VW/Audi cars and I can't believe that the same company made this interior.
Cheers Matt, from North Carolina, USA. I'm sure you did not intend for this video to be a comedy special but I literally laughed out loud. Your direct form of observation just caused me to laugh a good portion of the way through.
Great video …recently my local Halfords tried to get me to use them for MOT..I always thought they would be expensive, but they said they were more than fair when testing….I did not believe them and neither it seems Matt do you…

I always enjoy your videos, but it's not often you do a car I know a fair bit about. That Beetle has all the common problems, expensive electrical issues, and the worst engine. You did well to get rid.
genuine lol at the stone hitting the window. yes its a shed, but for laughs online it must be worth taking one on the chin from time to time. My Mrs had one too a 2.0 Auto. it was pretty good to be fair and drove really well.
Well done for bravely parking your posteria in those seats with that worrying yellow-brown stain. The mind boggles! You can get hood paint which might have spruced the roof up temporarily. If this is their car, what is the state of Julie or Sharon's house? Another great video.
mazda 2 has the same blue light till its warm. it amazes me how some people resort to moaning rather than looking in the handbook. i prefer the classic beetles, but this one seems decent. problems aside it could be fixed and used for a banger to go about an estate or farm, basically run it in to the ground.
Remember the spoof advert doing the rounds when the convertible version of this car was announced. It was a picture of one being driven with the roof down, with the tag line "now you can HEAR people calling you a tw@t". ;-)
The windows didn't work because you didn't have the engine on. My Land Rover is the same. But Oh what a lemon. I did have a Beetle in the seventies, and managed to replace the engine. And I LOVED it. Sorry that it wasn't saveable.

Superb! I was just going to say that the Beetles I see are usually immaculate but then you said that most of the ones you've seen are anything but. I'd tidy it up, put a new rag top on it, refurb the wheels and get yourself some ribbons 🎀 😉
Oh and a chauffeurs hat!
You'll make more every week than you'll make trying to sell it on. 👍😁
Edit- just watched the end, to be fair it tidied up very well, most of it's issues are just signs of being stood for a lengthy time.
I'd spend some time over winter getting it prepped for the wedding season next year, get some pictures of it with the top down and some pink ribbons on it 🎀 parked by a pretty church and watch the bookings roll in.....😁👍
Not everyone is into dealing with all the hysterical brides, mate. I'd buy and give as gifts all the used VW bugs convertibles just not to have to do any of that.
@@NGC1433 No worries, it's not for everyone, just easy money and mostly good laughs and happy times!😁⚠️👍
£400 for a couple of hours 'work' happy days!! 😊
You think people would learn.. How about buying a quality car then xd
Cause I really thought she hated that car after a few months and and just thought "Man I don't like Volkswagen but everyone is driving them I was just unlucky.."
I personally avoid a car manifacturer if I don't like the products that they produce (I'm talkin about reliability only). But if the's happy with her new car that it's all good :)
Wow you’ve bought some bangers before but this must be one of the worst! The welcome mat made me laugh though, almost like they’re taking the p*** 😂
Just picked up a 2006 2.5l Beetle today for $1100. It is easily the cheapest interior I've ever had the displeasure of sitting in. VW really took cost cutting to a new level with that car. I've owned several VW/Audi cars and I can't believe that the same company made this interior.
Maybe you've bought The Love Bug, the VW Beetle that had a mind of its own.
We've got one of these down the street that seems to have been abandoned, now I understand why!
Little wonder they're awful.
"I'm a Celebrity! Get Me Out of this Car!" - High Peaks Edition ;-)
I’m a car valeter and I can guarantee you that roof has no rips and with a steam clean and scub with a soft brush and tfr will come up like new.
Now that is a proper shitbox…
I owned a 2004 Turbo S convertible bought used in 2007 w/17,000 miles......loved the car. A bit slow, but a lot of utility.
OK its getting weird now I'll stop.
5:44 I couldn't help but notice that white beauty in the background
You know when hold 'em and when to fold 'em Matt, great entertainment as ever!!👍
Wonderful video! Thanks. Your "crappy car" videos are the best.
I swear Matt is a prima donna.
4k quality is gorgeous 👌
Cheers Matt, from North Carolina, USA. I'm sure you did not intend for this video to be a comedy special but I literally laughed out loud. Your direct form of observation just caused me to laugh a good portion of the way through.
Haha thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
Great video …recently my local Halfords tried to get me to use them for MOT..I always thought they would be expensive, but they said they were more than fair when testing….I did not believe them and neither it seems Matt do you…
The biggest con job on the car buying person was the introduction of computer assisted diagnosis. It means that every time the chipset gets confused it is you and me that pay ! Thanks for pointing out the pitfalls of certain types of car .!
I always enjoy your videos, but it's not often you do a car I know a fair bit about. That Beetle has all the common problems, expensive electrical issues, and the worst engine. You did well to get rid.
18:13 sounds like my music class playing the bongos, once again nice car matt
Thumbs up for the video, bonus point for Smooth FM
genuine lol at the stone hitting the window. yes its a shed, but for laughs online it must be worth taking one on the chin from time to time.
If there’s no hole in thy bucket, a quick scrub , followed by a coat of canvas dye and several cans of waterproofing should bring the roof back .
The funniest video of yours I've watched! "get out before it explodes" Brilliant!
mazda 2 has the same blue light till its warm. it amazes me how some people resort to moaning rather than looking in the handbook. i prefer the classic beetles, but this one seems decent. problems aside it could be fixed and used for a banger to go about an estate or farm, basically run it in to the ground.
Remember the spoof advert doing the rounds when the convertible version of this car was announced. It was a picture of one being driven with the roof down, with the tag line "now you can HEAR people calling you a tw@t". ;-)
Leave me alone. I can’t stop laughing as it is 😂😂
Thanks for answering the question of whether I should avoid these like the plague.
Not off to a flying start are we ? 😂😂😂 love it , even car vertical laughed , keep them coming Matt 😊
Enjoy your programmes Matt, thank you. Could you please also mention if the cars you are reviewing are ULEZ free or not. Keep up the great work!
The windows didn't work because you didn't have the engine on. My Land Rover is the same. But Oh what a lemon. I did have a Beetle in the seventies, and managed to replace the engine. And I LOVED it. Sorry that it wasn't saveable.
If I had to guess, I would say that the electrical circuit that controls the retractable roof, also controls the electric windows, maybe.
I love how you predict what kind of person the previous owner was
21:57 fascinating car. It knew you were about the talk trash, so it interrupted you quite abruptly.
I just saw this video and was intrigued to watch, completely concur with the decision and I love the speed boat reference (I got it 😂).
Keep them coming Matt, very entertaining on many levels 😁
That was such an enjoyable video Matt. Thanks for the smiles today!
Thanks for watching
Haha! - possibly your best one yet, Matt! So entertaining - makes me think of some dates I have been on. Also good on you with the raffle venture - I've invested a fiver already, on the basis that I'm about a million times more likely to win the Audi than the Euromillions!
Thanks!
Congratulations on getting out at the same price you paid, never mind the car valet and time spent. I think you did well.
It isn’t wise to leave documents with name and address in the car and on display. Glad you covered the info.
Superb! I was just going to say that the Beetles I see are usually immaculate but then you said that most of the ones you've seen are anything but. I guess that's because I live in bungalow city and the ones round here are owned by pensioners. It'd be nice to see an update once your pal has sorted it.
That was one of the funniest reviews I've ever seen :)
Thanks!
