Disconnecting the battery is often times not enough to disable the airbag. There are capacitors in the car holding charge for up to even a couple hours after the battery is disconnected to ensure the airbag works in the event the battery is disconnected in a crash. Also the airbag can trigger off of the most minimal volatage. So its best to wait an hour to be safe if your going to be disconnecting it.
Isn’t it the signal wire that the airbag runs off of and not just power? I would be honestly surprised if airbags actually fired during removal. I don’t have any experience to definitively say that they are safe or unsafe, but you do sit behind them all day, so I would be surprised that jiggling the wires would make them explode while nailing the horn doesn’t.
Howdy yall, long time tech here. If you're concerned about airbags popping while performing service on your vehicle, disconnecting the battery and shorting the positive and negative cables together (the battery is not in this loop!) Then attempting to start the vehicle will kill all residual electricity in the system. It's what I've done for years and has worked perfectly every time. I've done I have no idea how many Takata inflators. Just a tip for yall to help save some time.
FYI for all those saying you have to wait 30-60 min to discharge the battery: A fast-track way to discharge the capacitors and safely remove the air bag is to press the brake pedal a few times after you disconnect the battery. The brake lights typically will attempt to pull enough current to juice out any residual energy stored in vehicle capacitance. I do it all the time for my E36/E38/E39s with SRS service.
1:42 Psa from Chris fix: Make sure you wait about 30 minutes. Airbag systems have capacitors that allow the airbag to deploy up to 30min after disconnecting the battery.

Great video. One thing mentioned that is often overlooked. Wear a harness without a Hans device and if you hit something hard enough you will end up dead like Dale Earnhardt. Your body being held tightly by the harness and the weight of your head or head + helmet can separate your spinal column from your brain. No Bueno! If you are going the harness route and want to drive on the street, keep your seatbelt when not suited up for the track.

I've watched this video like twelve times in the span of the last two years and just noticed today that the airbag test footage is one of a miata.. lol i love this channel
This project is an NA miata (1st Gen). An NB (Second Gen) steering wheel will bolt right up except you have to swap wire connectors for the airbag. Not a big deal at all. The advantage is three spoke modern looks, cheap and the safety of a factory airbag. It's a tried and true swap.
@10:53 in the video your talking about why the new hub and wheel alignment are important. A major reason it’s important is so you don’t destroy the clock spin. That could set off the airbag light and give you a annoying clicking sound it if brakes
you can also take a stock wheel and have an upholstery shop reupholster it with leather or alcantara or really whatever you want so that you can keep the airbag and keep it looking good with the rest of the interior if you don't want an out of place one.
For soldering, I wouldn’t recommend a soldering gun. I used a 150W soldering gun for years and it worked ok, but took a very long time to heat up and as soon as you let off the trigger it would rapidly cool. After 6 years of using that I tried a digital soldering station and never looked back. I use a Weller WES51 soldering station which is absolutely phenomenal, and I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who needs to solder anything. Also the Trakpower TK950 and TK955 are both great options too. And please, always solder your connections and use heat shrink instead of those crappy crimp connectors.. You get much less resistance and cleaner wiring if you just solder everything. Yes it’s a little more expensive but you don’t want to cheap out on your car’s electronics. Also I’m not sure if putting a 3000 Ohm resistor is the right call for every vehicle, some may need difference resistances. I suppose you could measure the resistance across the terminals of the airbag and see what that reads as, then add an equivalent resistance resistor in place of the 3000 Ohm one used in the video
Make sure you clean that flux off that you used, leaving it there over time will promote corrosion as it prevents the metals from oxidizing creating a sacrificial protective layer (Think stainless or aluminium). Most solder today have a flux core so that you do not need to mess around with a separate flux.
I got mine a while back and I love it! Heard that I could get ticketed because of the no airbag, but after a couple cop encounters, never once have they ever mentioned it, so I do not think it is a problem. I have yet to get bucket seats/4 point harness/harness bar, but I will soon. 😎
Need to watch if you're installing racing harnesses, alot people go for 4 point thinking it's an improvement in safety, these are notoriously unsafe due to submarining because there is nothing to stop your body sliding down and out, this is where a 5 point harness is preferable. Really there is nothing wrong with a stock seatbelt which connects at an angle to pinch your body in place during a crash, on a 94 mx5 a fresh set of OEM seatbelts wouldnt go a miss though as all things in this life have an expiration. Good luck and thanks for the good content.
One other VERY IMPORTANT thing thing to remember when disconnecting a steering wheel: Careful to not pull out the ribbon for the clock spring! (yellow piece @ 2:57)
I replaced my steering wheel with another oem one, but the new one was leather! Pretty old leather, but still made driving my car way more enjoyable than I thought.

What I always do is cut out the horn button from the factory wheel and you can place it next to the cruise control and dimmer toggle.
"with just a simply rotation"
Me: Crying when trying to park my '93 starlet with no power steering... :'(
love this channel
love this show
the intro straight made my day
thank you !
STEERING WHEEL! AYE WHERE IS MY STEERING WHEEL. GLOVES! GLOVES AND STEERING WHEEL YEAH!
Best comment
This project is an NA miata (1st Gen). An NB (Second Gen) steering wheel will bolt right up except you have to swap wire connectors for the airbag. Not a big deal at all. The advantage is three spoke modern looks, cheap and the safety of a factory airbag. It's a tried and true swap.
'Steering wheel, gloves and steering wheel.....COME ON!"
best show second to high low. don't stop I love this
In Germany we say: "Betriebserlaubniss erloschen"
@10:53 in the video your talking about why the new hub and wheel alignment are important. A major reason it’s important is so you don’t destroy the clock spin. That could set off the airbag light and give you a annoying clicking sound it if brakes
YO! YOU FOUND MY 10 MIL!
you can also take a stock wheel and have an upholstery shop reupholster it with leather or alcantara or really whatever you want so that you can keep the airbag and keep it looking good with the rest of the interior if you don't want an out of place one.
You got me. I thought, that this was going to be an april fools video.
seriously, Zac is Donut's precious and we must protect at all costs
Day 97 of asking James to do an Up to speed on his Dad
PaganiGaming Lmaoo i had to find the comment
Hey man, you have to comment again, James did a shout out of you.
“Steering wheels have been allowing us to steer our horseless carriages for over 1000 years.” My knowledge of history must be limited lol
This whole series makes me want a miata
I’m 14 and I’m genuinely thinking about it lol
Miatas look like frogs😂
Nice find with the vintage crash rest video of the Miata!
Me: uses vice grips as steering wheel
Cop who pulled me over: *repressed suffering and confusion*
1:06 I actually have the same watch but I am cursed to never wear it because of my lean piano wrists
Make sure you clean that flux off that you used, leaving it there over time will promote corrosion as it prevents the metals from oxidizing creating a sacrificial protective layer (Think stainless or aluminium). Most solder today have a flux core so that you do not need to mess around with a separate flux.
after 11:54 I expected seeing Zach with a gopro in his mouth
I got mine a while back and I love it! Heard that I could get ticketed because of the no airbag, but after a couple cop encounters, never once have they ever mentioned it, so I do not think it is a problem. I have yet to get bucket seats/4 point harness/harness bar, but I will soon. 😎
I was also worried about getting ticketed for it, Do you think it’d be worth getting an aftermarket wheel?
I doubt that they would notice
Are we gonna just ignore the fact that he said steering wheels have been around for over a thousand years 😂
I thought i was the only one
Flintstones
There have been large ships that have used for probably longer than that, although a bunch p[probably used a till as it costs less
Is it just me or is the beat at 11:36 straight fire?🔥🔥🔥
*Me when i was 5*
*moms car is parked *
The steering wheel: *upside down*
Me: 😦
Need to watch if you're installing racing harnesses, alot people go for 4 point thinking it's an improvement in safety, these are notoriously unsafe due to submarining because there is nothing to stop your body sliding down and out, this is where a 5 point harness is preferable.
Why
@@RP-dy5mu It connects a bunch of important things like cruise control, horn, airbag, etc.
@@RealNikoBellic Thanks for replying so many years later :)
@@RP-dy5mu lol no problem
nice job with the Haynes Manual theme!
thank you haha. Bringing it back!
The step that no one talk about, align your steering wheel
oldest soldering iron in use today. A ts80 iron will work off a usb battery pack and is awesome.

Size and knees are kinda the same tho
The imaginary girlfriend in the passenger seat. Lmao
Thanks,u are the only one who resolved my doubts
😞 I thought y’all said this week was going to be how to do a wheel alignment in ur drive way
That woulda been nice, but this is cool too. Just hope they do it eventually
An airbag saved my ass once - I'd never not have one unless I have a five point harness. Glad to hear that he said just this.
Eyy 31 seconds earlyyy!!!
I replaced my steering wheel with another oem one, but the new one was leather! Pretty old leather, but still made driving my car way more enjoyable than I thought.
I swear to donut if u comment “First” on any video you shouldn’t be watching said video
hehe
