Great video! Chock full of good info and very entertaining. Don’t forget to loosen and retighten the upper and lower control arm bushing bolts too after changing ride height! It looks like you could have rolled your fenders with the roller tool before swapping the suspension, or lengthened the coilovers to get the tool to reach. Subscribed!

Interesting on the fender roller. That looks like an Eastwood, same one I have. I was able to use it on my Miata. I think you can adjust a few bolts to get it to fit right.
The air chamber also compensates for the fluid displaced by the shock shaft as it goes into the body of the shock. That displaced oil has to go somewhere.
Thanks Zach and Donut, I finished my nb today. Did the "longbolt method" aka take out the upper control arm. This series has helped me a lot, it was my first major mod to my car.
It’s surprisingly roomy in there! Im 5’10” and I don’t even have my seat all the way back in mine My brother is 6’8” and he fits in the passenger seat of my NA with no problem at all. If the steering column is adjustable (which mine isn’t) then I’d say someone 6’6” or shorter can drive a miata.
The thing i love about money pit is how its not a professional shop its just somebody in their driveway modifying cars its something realistic that more people can follow
The lower spring perch is for adjusting ride height. The lower shock mount is for adjusting the travel ratio so the shock bottoms out on the bump stop before your tire contacts the inside of the fender. If you end up with negative preload, add a helper spring.
Nice intro to shock/spring mods. Couple things though: 1. When putting new coilovers on your car, its not a terrible idea to put an appropriate anti-seize compound on the adjuster and lockrings. they may be aluminum, but coilover threads and lock rings are still known to corrode and seize up. it happens on all quality of coilovers too, whether high end or not, and once they're seized they're nigh impossible to adjust again. more often than not if you need your adjustability back, you're sending them in for warranty, or buying a new assembly/set. anti-seize is a really cheap, easy preventative measure to make sure your coilovers are always easy to adjust. 2. don't adjust height from the middle ring. that's the preload lock-ring. set preload with the top ring and then lock it in place with the lock-ring. 3. there are some amazing shock and lowering spring combos out there that outperform most base level coilovers at half the price. H&R race springs with Koni Yellow adjustables or Bilstein performance shocks will beat the piss out of most coilovers around the $1000 mark, and you can get into a full set for $500-700 USD for most common applications. they may not go as low, but the shock damping and spring rates are superior to just about anything below $1100 in the coilover market, aside from a good deal on budget coilovers from one of the companies that offers custom spring rates and valving on their shocks. if you care more about performance than ride height, are looking to set-it-and-forget-it, and you're trying to do things on a budget, quality adjustable/performance struts/shocks and quality springs (or Ground Control kits for a bit more) will offer better performance than most coilovers 2-3 times the price.

I really love this show, it's just something great, but i wish you could include ChrisFix in all of this somehow, after all, he is the king of the car releated DIY stuff!
To prevent damage you should always start the ride height high. Especially at the engine also known as the heaviest part of the car
OMG.....Zach jobe. I literally wanna buy everything you buy and follow up the things you do.
One of the best series but could've been your own channel. So detailed man. Wish you for a wonderful life. The explanation you give shows how well you understand each and everything that works on a car. Sadly I'm from India and so project cars are a luxury here. Wish one day I too do project cars.
after years of watching videos like this, I finally got the confidence (and money) to redo the suspension on my miata and I can't believe the difference. thank you for being a being a big influence!!
16:46 the guy in the mirror be like peekaboo
As much as I love this, it makes me miss Bart and Science Garage
I like this more, especially now that the explanation graphics have improved.
Yeah, it does have some throwback elements to science garage. I miss that guy.
Love both series though :)
Balraj Kullar what happened did he quit or something
"speaking in American units..."
*immediately gives to metric *
This video got me into cars. bought a Miata 10 months ago. just dropped $1050 on coils and now I’m rewatching.
I have nothing to do with Coilovers but I can't help my stop learning from him after watching his video on tires. He is really good. Hope he comes out with more and more videos.
I JUST STARTED WATCHING YOUR PODCAST YESTERDAY ITS LIT!!!
Not me watching this 4 years later
I’ve been rewatching the series because I’ve been considering getting an mx5 for the past couple months

Get it. Miatas are freaking awesome.
Source: me. I have an NB.
The good ole days. Also I just bought a Miata lmao
not me watching this 4.5 years later
Great video! Chock full of good info and very entertaining. Don’t forget to loosen and retighten the upper and lower control arm bushing bolts too after changing ride height!
It looks like you could have rolled your fenders with the roller tool before swapping the suspension, or lengthened the coilovers to get the tool to reach.
Subscribed!
12:28, thank you thank you for mentioning this. I feel like this step is so overlooked but it is so important. Great video.
Last time I was this early, I was on the wrong shift.
Just based on the opening clip, I would like to petition to change the title to be "How To Properly Jack Your Car"
Use wheel blocks or at the very very least keep use the handbrake/keep it in gear.
Preferably all of the above.
@@mathieulevasseur4082 indeed, usually I just keep it in gear and have the handbrake on tight

So we all gonna ignore how hard he hit the speed bump
I love when videos like this actually give you information about the subject. I can’t stand when they give you a history lesson for ten minutes without actually addressing the topic.
I really like videos like this. No bullcrap, just work & explain. Nice.
The lowered ride height really shows how well those wheels fit the Miata.
From almost getting run over from your own car to almost falling off your Chair in the first 13 seconds 😂
I miss SCIENCE GARAGE
Hussein Marey I miss Bart yelling at me
@Gabriel Gontijo He left for good to raise his family
Not fired, his own choice
I fricking love miatas espesially the na and when i saw it lowered i was so happy because thw miata looks like a super sprty car now
This video was made on my birthday! Thanks guys
I'm 2 years into my Skunk 2s on my VVT swapped 90' and I'm still loving them every day! Speaking of upgrades, that has to be one of your next upgrades for this Miata!!! Megasquirt into VVT swap.
WHAT is the music at 10:33?!? I love your epidemic sound choices, but I would love to know what tracks they are!!
I’ve heard it on many RUclipsr channels, I think it’s a popular royalty free track.
@@BrianYYH actually it is from Epidemic Sound! I found the track :))
What's the name of the song?
3:38 I almost choked on my apple 🤣
I bought some Coils for my mustang ebay at $310 😂. Will be here Thursday 23rd. And also Aluminum one piece driveshaft and upgraded rotors with brake pads
I am actually impressed that car can exit his driveway and go over speed-bumps so easily. Another car would scrape like hell XD
I like this dude, the way he explains things and editing of all the vids on this channel. Killer stuff, gents!
I’m also starting to want a miata project car. Damn you guys.
10:09 laughs in volvo 940.
there are 3 options, 1 cheaper (400$) 2 more expensive (1000$) the expensive is different brands but otherwise exacktly the same from what i've heard
2:59 when they say you go camping but something ain't right
shit just went from 0 to 100 real fucking quicc
Interesting on the fender roller. That looks like an Eastwood, same one I have. I was able to use it on my Miata. I think you can adjust a few bolts to get it to fit right.
The air chamber also compensates for the fluid displaced by the shock shaft as it goes into the body of the shock. That displaced oil has to go somewhere.
Thanks Zach and Donut, I finished my nb today. Did the "longbolt method" aka take out the upper control arm. This series has helped me a lot, it was my first major mod to my car.
imagine being one of the neighbors wondering why that guy across the street keeps messing with his cute little miata
"It's stiff, it's not too harsh, it's comfortable, it's not too bouncy." - that's what she said.
I haven’t seen a single comment about how this guy is as tall as the Miata is long... XD HOW DO YOU FIT IN IT?? 16:47
It’s surprisingly roomy in there! Im 5’10” and I don’t even have my seat all the way back in mine
My brother is 6’8” and he fits in the passenger seat of my NA with no problem at all.
Couple things though:
