My family is from Nebraska and runzas are AMAZINGGG my grandma always makes runzas or runza casserole
Say no more then runza casserole, please tell me your secrets
Runza has really good hand made hamburgers too, probably the biggest secret of all. They also do something else that's unique by serving Frings, which is a combination of fries and onion rings.
So if you're ever near one, stop in and try a classic Runza with an order of Frings. There's nothing like it anywhere. 👍
I used to get the Polish sausage..its been a really long time since I have been to Runza.
Thank you Eater for finally making a video on this beloved food and restaurant! More people should know about this delicacy because I am tired of seeing all these big city local foods videos. Nebraska needs some love too.
😁
Runzas are really good. I am surprised they only have 85 locations. I like the mushroom-Swiss Runza.
That is the type I often choose.
Best kind!
Runza is one of my favorite restaurants I was for a while eating there once or twice a week , but the food is fresh and the Runzas are amazing.
I tried this yrs. ago when I was in Omaha and Blair NE. It was awesome with the crinkle cut fries.
Do u even know what crinkle cut fries are
I've never even heard of a Runza but I really want one! 😂
Have you ever heard of bierocks? (Beer rocks)
@@jarodmorris611 Similar but not the same!
Prepare yourself for disappointment
Yup, bucket list for sure!
No, you don't.
Runzas were a lunch option at our school cafeteria about once a month. That was a day I always wanted to buy hot lunch instead of bringing a sack lunch from home.
As a Nebraskan, I’m going to say it’s a classic.
there's nothing better than runza on a cold winter day. from the runza to their chili and cinnamon rolls. I miss that place so much.
According to my mom, Runza was started by a distant relative of my great-great-grandfather (or however many greats it is). I was surprised to hear this, and was also a little skeptical about it, until I learned that it had German-Russian roots (the exact roots on my mom's side). This is how I can tell my family is completely Nebraskan.
Features like this are so cool because as an American who has traveled all over America, I love learning about regional specialty items that have somehow managed to still elude me. Like the Runza!
Tim Walz introduced this to me and now I have to go there to try it
From Nebraska - I Love Runzas !!!
100% a staple here in Nebraska! I love them!
I’m from Nebraska and can confirm
Do you need to add anything to the sandwich ?
SuperDungeonBoy some people use ketchup or mustard, but usually I just eat it plain! I prefer cheese runzas myself!
Awesome ! Cheese please : ) same.
I lived in Dorcester for a year, it's near Crete. We had them at school and being from Kansas, we said, "Oh, we're having bierocks" everyone looked at me like I was insane.
Jarod Morris I’ve heard them called that too before!
I love Runza and any opportunity I have to eat there. Often I get a Swiss and Mushroom Runza, a Diet Coke, and a Chocolate Chip Cookie.
Looks pretty good. I was in Nebraska recently and kind of regret I did not try them out.
Remember to try the Runza whenever you visit Nebraska!
Thank you for making this video. Great explanation.
Live in Omaha and my favorite Runza in the Swiss and Mushroom Runza!! Best fast food in Nebraska!
I am torn between that one and the original with being my favorite. I most often get the Swiss and Mushroom.
What were they dipping the fries into? Cheese? Ranch?? It looks amazing. Going to have to try to when I go to Nebraska soon
Ranch! They have the best ranch!
It’s homemade ranch Runza makes
I tried them on my road trip from Jersey>Vegas. Delicious! I found the plain or just cheese were way better than some of the crazier flavors they offer like Swiss & mushroom or pizza. The basics are superior here. I just ordered frozen Runzas to ship to New Jersey.
I just bought a box of Frozen Runzas. How do you heat them?
I never heard of this! And now I must try it! Go corn 🌽 huskers!!
We got a limited run of Runza chili and cinnamon roll ice cream. It’s pretty good!
Never heard of this until Walz mentioned them. Guess I'll put it on my to-eat list. :)
I'm having Runza tonight! My favorite food items from Runza are the cheeseburgers, the Runza sandwiches, the fries 🍟, the onion rings, and of course the chili. Yummy! 😋
I lived in Nebraska twice. Absolutely loathe the place, but Runza is amazing.
I'm from colorado and will drive the hour to Loveland (And in the past Fort Collins) to get my self a few of these! Runza's hype holds up. Get me a Runza with a Fring and you'll have my heart!
The best thing about Runza is that the food is ALWAYS hot!! The ONLY fast food chain where I've experienced that!
The second best thing about Runza is the french fries are the BEST fast food french fries. And their ranch dip (shown in the video) is phenomenal with them!
Let's go Walz!
In Florida...Never heard of them, now I want three of them.
I tried them once and i say theyre well worth the hype. Theres a few in kansas but the closest one at the missouri stateline is Lawrence. without that location i wouldnt have had known about Runzas. They deserve more locations, especially stretch it onto missouri, but maybe its a distribution issue? I doubt it isnt too hard franchising it if youre in proximity of Nebraska
Michigan Fan here….I’m hooked
Do Nebraska’s love of chili and cinnamon rolls! 😋🍽
Yes.
I have had a runza didn't particularly care for it, but everyone for theirselves
I never heard of them.
They look delicious!
None in NJ ☹️
Their food is soo good and now I'm craving it:(
I've been to Runzas and they're pretty good
Looks like a koloche. Nice combo with the beef cabbage and onion
Runza ia another name for a Bieriock. Derived from the Volga German area between Russia and Kazahkstan.
Tribe of Many sent me here!!!!
I must have one, with chili and a cinnamon roll.
They also serve chili and cinnamon rolls at Runza
This man knows
When I went to Nebraska my dad went to runza it it was soo good with ketchup
i mean... it looks good and i wish i had them here in my state but lets be real this is a hot pocket
Not a hot pocket. The bread is soft like a dinner roll. The very outer edge may be stiff, but it's soft inside.
Thank you for the video.
Their ranch is to die for
It's very good! But I think Wing Stop's ranch is just a bit better. It's definitely thicker.
Hey Runza - bring back the Italian Runza please! Also, your onion rings rock!
I actually don't really care for their onion rings. I prefer along the line of Dairy Queen's. I'm not a huge fan of the runzas either, they're okay once in a while. But I usually prefer their chicken strips or burgers. Their french fries are THE BEST!
I bet they could create some special for football games and teach the staff how to stitch the dough together to seem like laces
These look absolutely delicious. If ever I visit Nebraska I'll know what I'll be eating first!
“The corn husker state has one thing on lock. And the people who made that exact terminology via AAVE will not be featured in this video.” 😑
Wait they are?
Good to see u here Bruh
Not obsessed and most everyone I know doesn't even like them.
LIBERUUUUUUUUUULS
I certainly am
I see you on almost every video I watch.
Looks amazing
Growing up in south Texas we called them surprise burgers. They were served once a week in school cafeterias, areas where it was served the most Rosenberg, Richmond, Needville, Fulshear, and Wharton
Worked last 3 yrs for UP in Omaha before I retired went to runza once , got the runs at runza nope no more
Richardclapp256, yup, I hear you man. I can tolerate them + they taste pretty good too, but usually after consumption 20 minutes later, I wind up doing huge and VERY loud farts for something like 4 hours straight.
Omg this is the first time I've ever heard of a Runza outside of my hometown. Check out the Runza fast food restaurant. Its the best.
Tim Walz brought me here.
If Runzas are so great, why are they restricted to Nebraska?
I'm from South-East South Dakota, very common to find Runza's in the small german towns around here. Sadly we don't have any of those chains around here, maybe some day
@daveportnoy it’s supposed to look like this, but NOW they serve some cheap ground beef in a hotdog bun, which is what you got. You’d have given it a 10 if you tired the real thing but I swear they changed the recipe.
the burgers are great, they are not like mcdonalds burgers which are pressed patties, the runza burgers look feel and taste like something mom would make at home
That's something you can make in a big batch, freeze it raw, and bake it for a quick midweek lunch, while doing other stuff. Specially because the filling options are basically limitless. I like it.
It is named runza because of the aftermath.
Now that Tim Walz has put the runza on the national political stage, I hope they expand to California. I've been begging them for years to start opening stores in college towns.
One of their Senators, Ben Sasse, sells these at Husker games, great way to meet constituents and show that you're a normal guy.
Need a Runza hut at the Amtrak station in Omaha for the interstate train traffic
No vegetables were harmed in the making of this video
I also can confirm 😇😇
So good. Just had one today! Omaha rules
Bierock/ runza whatever ya wanna call it, I call it delicious
As a nebraksan i cant live withought a runza per couple months.
That looks absolutely delicious
Why am I watching this 😭 I’m trying to quarantine and stay home and there’s a Runza 5 blocks from me
Then go through the drive thru
I love Runza!
Reminds me of an russian pastry named PIRISCHKI (I dont know its right spelling)
It's spelled pirozhki. And yeah, it's literally the same thing. Pirozhki can contain different ingredients but beef/cabbage is a standard.
One of the things I miss most now being on the west coast. I think of these often
Search for bierocks recipe. Basically the same thing
That is an amazing idea. Love when you guys share stuff like this. Can be seasoned and made in so many different ways too, even Vegan.
Nah can't be vegan.
Is the meat cooked before baking?
I don't believe so.
Runzas are easy to make at home and they are so good
*Like to dip that in nacho cheese* 😋
I'd probably love it, I'm a serious garbage gut when comes to food. Also being a retired chef I'll most likely whoop some up soon too.
Puffy the Buffet Slayer powers activate!
They're great. The savory flavors from the filling go really well with the bread it's baked in. They work pretty well with cheese. Add some mushrooms and swiss for some extra umami.
Runza chilli is also unique.
Yup, I sure miss eating Runzas when I lived in Nebrasker many years ago. Only thing; sometimes they would give me really bad gas - and I'd end up turning into a dedicated walking nuclear weapon.
Mmm.Ground beef and cabbage.Oo.Mommy can we?
We call it a bierock out here in California. The lady is wrong when she said they don't serve anything like this out west.
When are these guys coming to the West Coast?
I'm going to rename my "pie-hole" to "runza-hole" because of this...
Thanks Nebraska!
"over 85 stores" Well, that's not wrong...
Tim Walz brought me here.
Tampon Tim? Beware
That’s the runza by my house
WOW HOW CULTURAL
Germany is east european??? That was new to me
Fetguf Google Eastern Prussian. Part of the reason that Germany was forced to invade Poland in World War II was that the Polish shut down the Polish corridor to Eastern Prussia. Konigsberg, the capital of East Prussia, is now called Kaliningrad and is part of the Russian Federation. 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
@@John77Doe Eastern europe was a geographical term invented for the soviet occupied territories after WW2. Yes East Germany or DDR was a part of the Soviet occupation but when you said "Germany" with no east or west attached to it, you are normally referring to West Germany
ohh I forgot, Runza may have been invented by Volga Germans. Google them John Doe
@array s You lost me there, you must be to smart. How did you get from the commentator moving the country Germany into the , post WW2 term, eastern europe to Hitler and his "Generalplan Ost"?
The video said "German-Russian cuisine". This refers to "Germans from Russia" of which the previously mentioned Volga Russians were a part of. Russian conquered the land on the north side of the Black Sea in what is now southern Ukraine (hence, Eastern Europe). Catherine the Great, the Russian queen who was ethnically German, invited Europeans to settle the newly acquired area. Many Germans settled there and became to be known as German-Russians. Thousands emigrated to the Upper Midwest of the US in the late 1800s after they were required to conscript into the Russian army which was against the religious beliefs of many German Russians.
I guess I have a reason to visit Nebraska now
BRING BACK THE ITALIAN RUNZA!!!
Yum
Only good thing we got out here
We need a Runza in Seattle!
Ok I love Runza
Make your own, it's so much better. If you knew how they treated their employees, you would never give them your money.
Nothing like it in the west? Trust me, In n Out IS THE WEST!
My mom made these. Delicious
