I was blessed enough to actually be invited to Jewels home in LA for back yard picnics a couple of years in a row. We would jam out some tunes and eat some greasy picnic food....now those were good times!!! And the fried chicken and ribs were enough to give you a heart attack just looking at them. LOL
Hello everone...I had forgotten this song till it just popped into my head...this is a song from my late teens...how time flys....😢 good day everyone...
THANK YOU for posting this live rendering of this 1964 CLASSIC. Wish you could replace with a longer video than this short Shindig version. Dean Martin (R.I.P.) is an icon in his own right, but the original mono 7" single by Jewel Akens (R.I.P.) is the definitive version! The 'B' side, Tic Tac Toe is also classic r&b - Cheers, DAVEDJ
Wow, I finally found this song over many years. My grandma used to sing this song especially the 🎵 when I look into your big brown eyes 🎵 part wow so many memories unlocked
Well I'm 63 and this was the first 45 that I can remember having and I still have it it's not the original one I had when I was just a little kid but I picked it up in a old record shop years ago I had to get it cuz all I can remember was this song from my childhood and owning this.45 RPM used to be able to go into Kmart and they would have all the 45s hanging on the wall in the top 40 and I used to go in there once a month and be able to get one with my mom and dad and they cost I believe less than a dollar to get but the song just sticks in my mind and I don't feel that old old
thank you for digging up this gem....can you imagine how much guts it took, to publish this song....prior to the aforementioned 60`s ? i think you did mankind a service, right there
My family was priviledged to develop a personal relationship with this wonderful, down to earth, generous, loyal, nicest guy you will ever have had the pleasure to meet. It is with sadness that I share with you his passing on Friday March 1, 2013 at approximately 2:00 pm.
That was filmed live, and this is not Jewel Akens lip syncing, the Shindig house band is also backing him up. In the 60's, most R&B artists refused to lip sync to their released song, they preferred a live performance. I spoke to Jewel Akens on an oldies station, July 1990. I had said, that when the song came out in '65, I was born. In the beginning of this clip, you see Jimmy O'Neill, the Shindig host, who I also had the pleasure of talking to on old L.A. station KRLA, am 1110.
A #3 hit for Jewel Akens in the Spring of 1965. It was also #2 on the Cashbox charts and #29 in the United Kingdom. My cousins had a large record collection and this was one of the records that they had.
SRHinckley gotta thank Volkswagen for turning my attention to this. it's catchy and proves that great music has come from all generations. I would have poo pooed this in my younger days!
Jewel Akens' Era label album had a GREAT novelty cut called "The Vegetable Love Song". Would love to see a video of that!! He was great. Akens went on to record for Colgems, the same label that featured the Monkees and the Lewis And Clark Expidition.
One of the reasons that this song was a hit is because at the time it was written, it was presented to the group that Jewel Akens was performing with. As a group, they turned it down because they thought it was too corny. Mr. Akens took the song and sang it as a solo act. Good move on his part. R.I.P.
This is the version done LONG before Dean did it. This was on the Hit Parade - can't remember which year, but Dean would have sung it because it was already popular.
If one looks up what songs won awards in the early 1960's, the music often wasn't pop. Generally, a song was around 2 minutes, which AM radio stations wanted and often the audience drove the playlist. Although various music studios develop over time to support these Top 40 artists, albums and FM radio changed the music scene.
lol i know jewle,he lives in the still very upper class area of baldwin hills in la.he looks the same except he wears his hair in a jeri curl.the nicest guy in the world, very quiet but still puts on a good show.oh and his son looks older than he does!
