Reminds me of a time long ago, when I was stationed aboard a guided missile destroyer and we were on a cruise in the Indian Ocean. and when not in CIC on watch, I’d be in my rack listening to the two tapes I had of America among others, fighting back tears because I missed my girlfriend so badly. One year later I was back in port, and married to that girl. Now, almost 46 years later, she and I are still married, and I still love listening to the greatness of America.
I graduated in 1974. I was just 17. Went to upstate NY from Ohio and spent the summer at my sister and her hubbies house. Went back to Ohio, I missed my friends.
this tune must, lyrically, be the dumbest song of all time. although ,the harmonies and chord progressions are amazing; the idea that anyone would travel across a desert for weeks in solitude and not name their horse is ridiculous. the horse had a given name when he got it, i'm sure. people name their dogs and cats, even chickens. who doesn't name a horse? it's a stupid tune. i'm here for it, though.
@@alteknack2510 The title was just to make people notice it, when flicking through music lists, plus it rhymed. As for your comment about 'dumbest song', well that describes much modern crap these days which could easily take that title.
This song was the first song I ever heard from America, as a boy, back in the 70's. I remember it like it was yesterday! We were in my mothers 1975 Chevy Impala Wagon, and this song came on the radio, and even at that young age, this song really grabbed me! I've loved them ever since!!
I recently discovered the beautiful and profound work of America, I will come back a lot, I will forever carry these beautiful songs in my memories and good moments in life.
I was born on the cusp of rock and roll. By university in 1970, rock was at its zenith. I am blessed to have lived through it and have access to the videos of these incredible musicians. I’ve discovered some that I wish I hadn’t dismissed so lightly. Listen to the music of Greg Lake, first with King Crimson and then Emerson, Lake and Palmer. The first two years of King Crimson produced some of the best rock imo. I don’t care for some of the schizophrenic songs of ELP but the ballads sung by Greg Lake are superb. Happy listening! 😊
This is a absolutely beautiful song. I literally search this song and band, because of the heartfelt commercial from Kroger. Usually around the holiday publix commercial are ones that make me cry and think. But bravo to Kroger. I loooove this song. I'm kinda solo for the holidays. I suffer from depression , anxiety, loneliness, and self worth, but it's literally music and my small circle of friends that help me client through the darkness at time. I don't reach out to them doing my spells. I feel so selfish to do so. We all have our own lives, . But it's the effect of them trying to make me feel better . That let me know I'm still vaild cared about and loved . Happy Holidays.Everyone
I was 9 years old when this song came out, but god I loved it. It amplified my imagination and took me to a calm, peaceful, mystical place. Life was much simpler. I really miss that place... . My life now just seems to be filled with work and endless responsibilities. I hope that I could just feel that feeling again. Just for a while... Thanks to all the artists that follow their Muse and produce art that reaches the soul.
Oh my God in the 1980s I would partake of certain substances while listening to this and think I was finding some profound meaning in the lyrics. I was just a stoner digging some good tunes. I had some good times doing this.
When I got this album in 1973 I knew they were a special band. So many memories with this music... Saw them last year in LA, with my wife and kids. A whole family of fans.❤
I heard this song in Vietnam when I was 13 (1972). The Vietnam War was raging at the time. And now I am 65. I still listen to this song in the car on my way to work.❤
This wonderful tune really stood out at the time with it's amazing melody , harmonies and lyrics , even the state of the art sound quality sounds better than many digital recordings today. It was a US number 1 in 1972 , hard to believe that America recorded this landmark track in the UK where it was first released reaching number 3 in the charts !.
Apparently this song was not played on certain radio stations in the US due to the word 'horse' which is informal language used in narcotics and many thought this single was Neil Young which is no coincidence as the band were fans and admit to being inspired to produce a similar sound.
I lost a good friend and teammate recently. After football practice we’d hit the showers and break into this song . Innocent and fun times back in ‘73 .
I was in the Army stationed in El Paso when this came out in Dec 1971. I’d go to the desert or Mount Franklin overlooking El Paso listening to A Horse With No Name. It was magic. We had lots of parties out in the deserts around El Paso carrying cheap wine (Ripple & Boones Farm) and lots of pot. We were America’s finest protecting our country the best we could.
A classic and unforgettable song that will stand the test of musical time! America is for sure one of the greatest rock bands of all time! Thanks for all the great tunes and memories Gerry, Dewey & Dan! 👍👍📀📀
A spiritual awakening ❤....what's the craziest of all is after there has been an awakening, the underlying meaning of all these songs is finally understood. It's like an unlocking of all the beauty in the world. Finally one has the eyes to see and the ears to hear. What a wonderful fucking world!
Listening to this song brings be back as a grade 5 student in the 70’s when it was the #1 song in the radio in Baguio City Philippines. Life then was simple but genuinely happier despite having no cellphones, laptops…etc. I even recall America playing at Camp John Hay.

You are very wise.
In 1972 I took a motorcycle trip from NYC to San Francisco and this was my theme song the whole time. It was magic. Thank you America.
Wow, what an amazing memory to have associated with this great song
Haunting song that echoes a distant time yet also sounds fresh
I still play this song 1973 I graduated from high school. When life was simple
Graduation about you time!
@4MAGA Life wasn't simple back then. You just didn't know it yet! Trump2024

Graduated in 75. Great time and great music.
Young, a run down station wagon, hair, a surf board, a fire surrounded by friends, and this music. My God how I miss that life.

@alteknack2510 for me it's not about the lyrics. It's about the time and being young with no worries. It makes me feel great as I reminisce.
It's about the story "Don Quixote"

One of the best 70s band. Music that you can relate to, and understand. No rap crap!
I recently discovered the beautiful and profound work of America, I will come back a lot, I will forever carry these beautiful songs in my memories and good moments in life.

Their old stuff is the best, but a newer tune you should check out is "You Can Do Magic!!" If you haven't already! One of their last big hits.

So simple, so pure, so unlike what kids listen to today.
Sadly nowadays kids will never hear music as beautiful as this.

I was crossing the Mojave desert (in a car) in 1976 and this song happened to come on the radio. I became a fan on the spot.
Laying in bed at night with just the glow of the radio dial and this song came on ,to me it was a bedtime story 😊 i want my 70' s back

1973 ! 70s 80s 90s all great decades. Can't beat late 20th century for music.

When this song first played on the radio, we were smoking Guerro gold
Panama Red kicked ass back there, the Acapulco gold! Miss that good stuff,😮
I'm 80+ and considered blessed l still enjoy this jewel.
The degree to which the live performances needed no technology to make them sound good amazes me. Such pure voices, such a perfect song.
It's what we used to call "musicianship" back in the day.
