- I was in Calgary, Canada, this week and heard the story of a homeless man who was dying of cancer and dreamed of visiting Mardi Gras in New Orleans some day. People rallied to raise the money for this kind man to have his last wish, but he became so sick he was not able to travel. The people at the shelter he lives at then held a Mardi Gras party for him. When I was told that story my heart broke, yet I didn't realize I was about to meet Terry.
Terry is 58 years old. He says he's been homeless since the age of 8. Long before I started the camera Terry reminded me of my grandfather by wanting to tell stories. This video is a little longer than others, but this may be the most powerful video I've ever posted so please watch to the end. As I started to get emotional this very strong, proud man reminded me to not feel sorry for him.

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as RUclips, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

Homeless for most of his life and the man cannot hold his tears when faced with the fact that it is ending.. Life is precious!
Every living creature has survival instincts build in to make sure we don't all commit suicide. So the fear of death does not really say anything about the quality of life.

@@nonexistenceisbliss9528 it's actually both fragile and precious, no matter what people go through...this world gives you no promises, no one is entitled to anything but death....besides survival instincts, I believe hope is the driving force that enables it, otherwise why try? But many, or all don't want to die...except those that give up or lay down their lives
The Man From The Dark Side .... I beg to differ. I was abused and raped from the age of 3. Not from within my family, but outside of my family.
I grew up on a farm, but we were very poor. I had 5 younger brothers and I can remember the times that we got new shoes and clothes. I also remember my brothers crying for something to eat. The little clapboard house was freezing in the winter and hot as heck in the summer. We had no running water, but our home and every kid was as clean as a pin!
Education was important. So was integrity and dignity and Christianity. All of my brothers have done exceedingly well in life. I became a professional singer and songwriter. I have even modeled. All that we have become we owe to having little to nothing as children. We had to learn discipline, respect, and to be creative. Nothing was handed to us that we have not earned.
I lost my younger brother to cancer two years ago. I was with him until he breathed his last breath. Twice before he died he woke from a deep induced sleep to raise his arms upward as if embracing someone. He had a genuine happy smile on his face. I asked him if he was seeing angels... he nodded yes. On a piece of paper he wrote,” GOOD DEATH.”
I can hardly write this, because I grieve him still. I know where he is and that I will be with him again, but I miss him.
Is life precious? You darn right it is and that’s no BS!

If someone is homeless all there life without finding a way out usually there is more to the story and it is the individuals problem not society. Playing the victim is a mind set that some of these people never get away from,I would be interested to know how alcohol and drugs played a role. Oh and by the way you come across as phony and magnanimous with your SIR,and blaming all that is,wrong with the world on society, remember we have choices in this world, and many people have overcome dire obstacles and have made successful lives for themselves.
@@lorraineforte9175 Indeed and I understand that we need to place accountability and responsibility on the victim but mental illness is a part of this I think and with that I'm including the possible abusive home he fled from. It's unfortunate you see my comment as magnanimous. It was more a self reflective and a comment that included myself and for you to help understand the tone, said in a more reflective and lucid state. I wish he could have gotten the help I think he needed to live simply a better and happier life. I suppose it's more about wishing we could have helped him earlier in life to find the tools in himself that in turn he could use to help himself throughout his own life. I just see so many homeless people that are actually mental illness issues as well that I think are slipping between the ever growing cracks in our society. Thanks for your comment and no insult meant or taken.
His dad should have been arrested for doing that.
In my day, some parents in my neighborhood would always beat their children into submission and used as household labor. I was always thankful my family wasn't that way. Even our teachers got away with things that no way could happen 50 years later. Very sad story, Bless Terry!
It was a much different time.
merry lou Different times, in that era parents didn’t get arrested for kicking them out. 8years old was just a baby,,,, they sent bad teens to Juvie orphanages in those days,
And the mother as well.
Abdul Basir Al-Armini ... but kindness and love are not confined to a specific era.
I grew up extremely poor. I have seen my mother cry, because she had nothing to feed us. I have heard my brothers cry themselves to sleep because they were hungry. We had very little, but we never complained.
I remember some times when we would have a little money and we would go with mama to buy a few groceries. Rarely did we ever go anywhere, but when we went to buy groceries there was a little boy who stood on the sidewalk selling papers. His clothes were clean, but ragged. His body was clean, but he was badly in need of a haircut. He had no shoes. He looked evacuated. Perhaps we looked the same way to him and perhaps my heart hurt so much for him, because I had a personal understanding of his sufferings. Anyway, whenever he was there at the time we were, my mama would make sure she had a little something for him. She wouldn’t take a paper. That way, he could keep the money.
Once we saw him on the corner selling papers. His tennis shoes were well worn and the thin little jacket he had was not enough to keep him warm. As we were going into the store, a man and his well dressed wife were coming out with a cart overflowing with groceries. The man paused to buy a paper. The young boy said,”Thank you sir.” Not more than three feet from the youngster, the wife chastised her husband for wasting his money on a another worthless newspaper. As they walked away she said the cruelest things about that little paperboy. Although, I was only 5 years old I wanted to hurt that woman. I had never experienced that type of ugliness.
I wanted to run to the little boy and hug him. I wanted to make him “Rich.” I’m sure that she hurt his feelings, but he never let on. What a mean old woman to hurt such a timid; meek and well mannered little child. I knew that he knew that I knew he was poor, but he carried himself as if he had no knowledge of what being poverty stricken was. He had a pride about him, but it was not arrogance or vanity; it was integrity.
think there are some circumstances in life that make us more sensitive to others; some things make us stronger and we are better because of it. I often remember those days and the little paperboy. I wonder what he grew up to be. I’m sure about one thing. He did not grow up looking down his nose at others.
rest in peace my friend.
When he started crying at the end my heart broke..

For many parents to understand just because you are the parent does not mean you cannot do wrong, including, there is no such thing as not being too harsh in discipline, it is not ok to name call or cuss at your child, to name a couple things. @grantda2010 G I was a couple of years older than him. I knew him through his brothers Gary and Larry. We were all in the same Army Reserve regiment including Terry. Whenever I saw him it was on a parade night/weekend and he was always there with his brothers. Only went to their house a couple of times and it never entered my mind that Terry was not living there. I did learn that when he was ill his brother, Larry, who at that time lived at least a thousand miles away did reconnect and came to visit him and arrange his funeral. There was a plan for a memorial service but it never happened. As to why his siblings did not take care of him, I have no idea.
You shoulda beat his parents
So well spoken and a gentleman.
Poor man he was so sweet cruel world
RIP Terry. May you have eternal peace and happiness, you deserve it. God bless you.
This video made me tear up. I’m so sorry that a beautiful soul had to go through a difficult life and suffer cancer.
I feel awful, wish he had a better life. So sorry and so sad that he’s dying. I hope his soul finds rest with Jesus.
He is a very wise guy... we all are born for a reason. and i think he has open the eyes of so many people.
Yeah born have it hard for years then die then a darn good chance you will end up in hell for your sins is it worth being born?
+Wafflezombies1964 I think that way too
I could have listened to his stories for quite a bit longer. 😥
Rest In Peace Sweet man, May God rest your soul. 🙏❤️
Thanks youtube for showing this 10 years late.
I promise to never fail my children as god as my witness.
Thank you for sharing his story. It breaks my heart to know so many children are unloved by their parents causing great trauma for life. I wish more people were more loving and kind.
Bless his heart!! I hope he found peace in his next life, RIP!!
If he had three wishes - he could only think of 2. And neither were for himself.
We should all see who this man was. A hidden saint among us.
I wish I could have known you.
YOUR LIFE MATTERED
I’m in tears
May God Bless this man. Lilly
Send this on to your friends because this is the true spirit of homelessness.
I try to imagine not having close, lifelong friends, and never having been in the military with buddies, either. What a lonely man...
Watching this poor man makes me feel grateful for what I've had in my life.
He seems like such a sweet and genuine person who made the best of a bad situation and was truly appreciative of what he had. We could all learn something from him.
Wow, homeless at 8, this broke my heart...:((
I wonder if he knew his true birthday? And I grieve him missing all those years of Christmas...at least 50!
@@vivians9392 well that could be a blessing in disguise... Jesus wasn't born in December. Jeremiah 10:2-4
2 Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
Will someone give this guy a hug and hold his hand for me,his child hood sounds familiar. Thank you for taking care of him Canada,if he was here they would have found a way to let him die alone in the streets I fear. California.
DBSpy1 he died in hospice
It's been a long time since I didn't feel this pain in my soul. Bless his heart, what a beautiful human being! He understood and accepted life the way it was offered to him. What a beautiful person! Hopefully we can learn from his story and understand that at the end of the day, it is not our condition, environment, people that make us happy, it is simply ourselves. Bless him!
I'm heartbroken and in tears.
