I see a lot of comments on here saying this final season was rushed. It wasn’t. It’s the final season therefore eveything needed to be wrapped up smoothly and it was.
There was closure, there was tragedy, there was cohesion. Stefan’s character arc was nicely done as was jaq’s, sully and Dushane.
Performances were stellar. I really felt that moment when sully had the gun in my man’s mouth, really uncomfortable to watch but it made for great t.v. Barry K representing the Irish was the perfect addition to the show even if his screen time was relatively short he definitely chewed up every moment of screen time he had.
Yes there could have been a couple more episodes but it really didn’t need that extension. The show is visceral in tone and gritty in execution. The type of show that allows the characters to feel real and tangible without it being far-fetched and silly.
My only gripe was Dushane murdering his business partner in his own home. He really should have thought about disposing the body. It might have saved him the hassle of running around summerhouse with those bags for the last 30 minutes like some hood-rat. 🤦🏿‍♂️ 😂😂😂

This season should've had 8-10 episodes I don't agree with how Dushane's character was written, him becoming a slime bucket and an irrational person didn't make any sense maybe if there were more episodes they could've given him more backstory as to why he became the way he is more scenes of him mourning his mom and the after effects of losing her should've played a bigger part

Every reason to go down the wrong path but standing at the crossroads with his life ahead of him, made the right choice and didn't follow the way of his brother. For example, with Jaq she was always shotting food until it started to affect her family thats when she wanted to stop but what she doesn't realise is how much family lives shes already affected. Its something which I loved to see how shes now realising that its bad because its affecting her sister and the baby.
I also love the hard truths they dished out in this series. When Mandy told Jaq that Lauren died because of the food she shot, and how Sully told her that there is no one to blame for her death but her really shows how sad that type of lifestyle is, and that you only start to change when it hits home.

    - Why did Mandy get so much screen time and get so important? I think the riot thing was a little bit over the top, and what happened eventually to the little girl who got hit by the police car?
    - Why did Dushane clean so badly after he killed Jeffrey? I mean I get it he was in some sort of angry panic attack, but still he had all the time to clean or could have set the house on fire?
    - Lastly, the guys from Latiff that were supposed to get Dushane out, you expect that they were some sort of old commandos, but they got killed within 10 seconds by just two roadmen. I mean cmon...

There were some really good things that people are not seeing.
Stef’s character arc was really well done. He was set out for revenge but matured through conversations with his girlfriend, realising that being a gangsta will kill him eventually. So killing sully isn’t worth it. He doesn’t want to be the top boy, that’s what killed his brother. That was pretty obvious so i don’t know why people want him to be Jamie 2.0. Jamie said in the last season, stef is smart. They showed that here. He’s smart enough to know not to follow the same path as his brother.
Sully’s death was well done. It made sense. The amount of people hes killed in just this season alone, he’s not getting a happy ending. He’s amassed way too many enemies. The Irish, Jaq, stef, Jamie’s friends. If stef wasn’t going to get him, someone else would. It’s a message that being the top boy and living this lifestyle doesn’t end well. There are no happy endings. When you’re in that life, it ends abruptly with no warning.
I feel like people want a Hollywood ending. When it’s not that. It’s real. There aren’t no opportunities for final goodbyes in this lifestyle. There aren’t no final stand offs and there isn’t opportunity for closure.

They told us it was jaq in a subtle manour, she reassures her girlfriend we are going to be okay, and last time she saw sully he said “ that’s why you ain’t getting a pass, neither did keiron” so jaq KNEW in order for everything to be “okay” the look on her face after she cuddled her girlfriend solidified that she knew what she had to do, sully was going to kill her as soon as he left his daughter because he said jaw gets no pass, when have you known sully to leave loose ends? Jaq knew this and she is the only one left alive who knew enough to find sully other than steph, it was 100% jaq and the show tells us without feeling the necessity to tell us as the body language and what they (jaq and sully) last said to eachother), the killer had a hoodie on not blonde hair look closely even resembles jaqs camo hoodie in previous seasons and the killer walks exactly like jaq. This is the subtle way the show wants us to put the pieces together. A random death for sully would not make sense as no knowledge of his enemies still looking for him was shown, only person who needed him gone to be safe was jaq. There you have your answer who killed sully.

    • @1hopefulsoul

Plus the fact the killer didn’t want ANYTHING but sully dead, we know jaq wanted the drugs done and thats what stirred this whole thing up, she also knew aside from her safety in jeopardy that sully would still be poisoning communities with drugs and the way jaq’s scene was shown imediately after dushane was killed, this was no accident. There is no more proof needed if you take it all in and read between the lines, no need for conspiracy when the evidence is right before our eyes so truthfully we don’t need to see jaqs face to know she done sully.

And one last thing , it reminds me if the ending of the sopranos, the evidence that tony was assasinated was all there as it was his point of view looking at the door everytime someone came in, the last time someone came in it was simply lights out and darkness, but the evidence shows us the focus on a strange man who enters the washroom like mafia style assasins do and probably recovers the weapon feom the bathroom, but without having to show us the sopranos made a genius way of letting us know tony was killed at the end. These genius ways of making the viewer have to pay attention to know what happened is part of how writers can keep making incredible finales to amazing series.

Jaq is definitely my favourite character from this season and to know she survived it is relieving. Especially due to her mental health struggles and the fact Sully nor Dushane cared about it throughout this season, especially when the food was involved. With that said I like to think it was Jaq at the end, finishing things off with Summerhouse, protecting her new family & getting revenge for Kieron, starting a new life. However, I like to think it actually was Stef rethinking his decision. Deciding in the end that what had happened to his brother, Si, Erin’s dad Dris & fully knowing how sick Sully truly was, he decided to rid the world of someone like that and maybe take his place. Perhaps just try and live a happy life with Erin & Aaron.

I think Lizzie planned everything well. The Irish were there for a reason, this is definitely her homies. Sneaky snake. After killing Juan, Dushane and Sully should have killed Lizzie, teamed up with the Moroccans and Emilio, recruited more people into the gang and more security, then killed the Irish. But greed, pride, recklessness, lies and anger pulled them down. And the saddest part is that many went down with them (Emilio and his children, etc.) If they had a brotherhood, they would all be alive. In the end we see that in the fifth season they have nothing left but greed, cruelty, pride, lies and betrayal. They were doomed from the very beginning of the season.

The writers and the directors did a fantastic job of luring us the viewer into getting emotionally invested into Dushane's character arc - he was both pro & antagonist. Sully did a masterful job as the antagonist throughout each season. Their collision course, subtle at first, became quite clear in season 2 and peaked in season 3. That line, "if we are not monsters then we're food" was brilliant. The masks were off, D&S were always monsters and destroyed everything they touched. Dushane's death wasn't intentional but it was fitting (I didn't see it coming and I thought he was headed for prison) and Sully's was inevitable and personal - they made no effort to collect the P's from the car fam. The street life is unforgiving. This was a great series finale. Epic!!

I can’t remember if he ever went to a doctor in S2 when it first started cropping up but it reappeared in this season just to be forgotten about in E5 onwards. It was shown as very important but at no point did Dushane drop dead from a heart attack. Not whilst hiding from the police & Sully, not in a shoot out, not in a foot chase, not when trying to find Jaq. I find this quite weird as if it was forgotten about or a 2 season long red herring. Or even some kind of call forward to his demise where he would spend is last moments clutching his chest in pain. I don’t know, felt weird to me- did anyone else notice this?

Though I still find it hard to believe a character as loyal and sensible as Jaqs would have ever robbed Sully, despite feeling so guilty? I reckon they could have written a few more more episodes and fleshed the conflict between Sully and Jaqs out a bit i.e. a differentr reason why Sully would have a problem with Jaqs wanting to retire? Another point in the series when I thought the plot could have been a bit better, was in Season 1/3 when Dushane had Sugar killed. If all it took was for Dushane to find a stripper to poison Sugar in prison, why didn't he do that from the start?

Remember when Jaq wanted to end the yute who served to Lauryn, and who was it that told her that road doesn’t end well? Sully. Last series Lizzie told her husband if she is no use to Dushanbe, he’ll kill her. Her husband didn’t seem to care. So what did Lizzie and Lythe do? Bump Dushane and run, which led to him killing her husband. Also touching bits like Lauryn seemingly happy again but still on the brown - which led to her drowning. I have mixed feelings about this season. On one hand, I think there are a lot of positives, and on the other, there are a lot of negatives. I think Stef was really great this season, but his character arc felt incomplete, and honestly, I like the way his story ended, but him killing Sully would have been far better than the ending we got for both characters.
Second, Dushane's death was just underwhelming the way he went out. I like the whole chat between the two of them; but it could have been much better than it was, especially since they've been through so much together and are basically like brothers. It was just kind of weak. Dushane's ending was extremely underwhelming for the main character.
Jaq I understand the message and what they were trying to set up with her, but it was kind of ass and ruined her character, imo. Besides that, there are a lot of issues and loose ends that never got filled in, like Tia, Ruben, Curtis sister, and the police investigating Dushane and the summerhouse mandem; they feel forgotten. Even Dushane's character felt off this season. Dushane is my favourite in the series; he's smart, calculated, and usually level-headed, but he wasn't any of these things this season; he was just an unbearable asshole. There's a lot more I can type about, but everyone else has already said it. I think the overall season wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. It should have been way longer with much more love and effort put into it, like the first Netflix season. Hopefully this isn't the "end" of Top Boy while this is the final season. Hopefully we can get a special showing us the aftermath and them fixing the loose ends to the story like Breaking Bad did with Jesse.

For me I actually don't feel it was rushed. I think a lot of metaphors were at play in this season. The reason i say that is they could have played out the scenes with the irish, but realistically they shortened that story line. The betrayal, the new suppliers, overdoses' the murders... These were all things we have seen from the show already, Im not sure it needed to play out again for a 5th time. All that was left to see was Dushane and Sully's downfall.
As for who killed Sully I think Jaq had the most reason to out of everyone after Stef and it was not him.

Im still gutted by Dushane's death. I was praying he wouldve disappeared with the bag when sully hopped over. It just seemed like he could always find a way out, thinking about his time in Jamaica. But he allowed himself one crucial mistake this season, making promises he couldn't keep. It feels weird rooting for such an evil character. At the end, atkeast til his death, Sully was the true Top Boy. He killed everyone who was ever in his way, Dris, Juan, Jamie, Johnny....and Dushane

I think of it different sully was never top boy he could never ever be top boy. Bobby raikes said it all the way back in the beginning, he is too rash and made too many enemies. He thought he finally had gotten rid of all his obstacles and all his ops. Stef even let him go. He was in the clear and was top boy for 2 seconds before he got popped.

    Two things I loved:
Jacq’s own dealer caused her sister’s death, taking the bags caused Kieran’s and she attributed to Dushane’s and directly to Sully’s. She ends up by default “Top Boy” if she wants the title. 😅
Most powerful thing I saw was Sully could’ve shot Stefan through his hoodie holding his glock the entire time but was willing to accept his fate. He was already mentally exhausted from it all & was going to let Stefan have it.
Stefan would’ve shot him and saw his gun fall out of his pocket while he held it.

She called Dushane from his mom’s flat and gave him the location and time for the exchange and she didn’t really need to.. but it helped the storyline and his fate knowing where the exchange would be. It was Jaq who killed Sully. The moment she told Sully, Dushane had robbed her and Sully tells her she gets no pass it was pretty much the end for Jaq. She took him out, she had to.
I think the whole season was done pretty good, could have done a bit more around the Irish gang and a scene with Dushane and Lizzie but other than that it built up nicely.
The opening scene between Sully and Dushane was fire and the last scene between them was class, brought it to a great conclusion.

I hope Top Boy gets a spinoff going in the direction of Sully's killer (Jaq from what I think) and of course Stefan. Although I'm a massive fan of the series I must say, this season felt rushed and in my opinion was the weakest season of the whole franchise. To have the Irish crime family being scaled to be the most ruthless and dangerous threat to Sully and Dushane, then kill them off so quickly didn't sit well with me. I was excited to see what Barry Keoghan would bring to this show as he fits into the franchise perfectly. The only emotional moments I cared for were Stefan speaking to Jamie and his family, the death of Luaryn and the heart to heart between Dushane and Sully. I've come to terms that shows like this ultimately portray choices have consequences and consequences affect everyone.
The reveal of the undercover police agents was a fantastic twist that was so unexpected. I was invested in their investigation into the criminal organisation and wanted to see how Dushane would navigate throughout that direction.
I think that the writers had too many stores to conclude and felt pressure finding a way to execute a good/satisfying ending.
On the other hand I've learnt that just like in real life, nobody knows their ending and final fate. The roads dont forgive and love anyone.
With that being said if the franchise continues I hope for the name to be Top Boy The Next Generation or A New Age. I love this franchise and hope to see these talented performers in new projects. Standout performances from Ashley Walters, Kane Robinson, Micheal Ward, Jasmine Jobson, Saffon Hocking, Araloyin Oshunremi and Jolade Obasola.
BrainPilot thank you for the reviews and your takes on these shows, much appreciated.
