I was one of those who wanted Wendy to die. I don't believe it comes from a sexist place. I saw Marty as trying to everything in his power to stay alive and keep his family alive. Wendy was so much more ambitious . She wanted power at all cost. She seemed to love her kids , but even their safety was second to her ambition. Every time Marty , who was always the smartest person in the room had things figured out , Wendy did something that got them deeper in. Just my opinion .

Ruth being killed at the end..Just points to a metaphorical symbolic truth that poor people from crime ridden backgrounds rarely win or make it out. Their stories are the most tragic. I love the quote from Ruth where she says,
"I am smart enough to know how fucked my situation is, but not smart enough to get out of it".
This encompasses the feelings of people coming from lower class systems with systemic poverty, abuse and crime .

This is show by the dialogue with the Priest where he thinks this is God’s final warning but Wendy says this is a sign we will be fine. She acted on emotion and Marty had previously warned her "don't get yourself killed". I loved Ruth's character but this story was about the Byrds. Laura Linney was superb. She chopped off Marty's legs at every turn. So much so that Marty had to concede to her. Every scene was filled with tension. I loved it. Three cheers to Jason Bateman. ❤️ love you Ruth.

I myself is still binge watching through the second part (currently on episode 11) and episode 8 was a great opener. It set the tone for the rest of the season. Also, it's really interesting to see Marty break down and lose his cool as the season progresses.

Marty beating up the guy in traffic is also important, the whole show Marty is the one who tries to diffuse situations from escalating to violence and he constantly suppresses his anger and frustration because he needs to think logically in order to get his family out of danger, but he slowly becomes accustomed to violence and that scene indicates that he now sees violence as a viable option to solve problems and that he is no longer able to control the rage that has been building up inside him, so i think that's why he was ok with his son killing another person

I feel like Ruth dying was the ultimate culmination of Wendy's ambition for power and Marty's desire to protect his family. Her going to Claire shaw who they needed badly to go legitimate, and Claire being some fake tough white collar exec was always a match made to explode. She was ambitious as the Byrd's, as vile as Wendy, yet from the jump lacked all of the backbone. She was just a scared young woman trying to play in the big dogs world, which was reflected by her having a bodyguard do her dirty work, where the bryds handled their own business. So due to the Byrd's biggest misjudgment, they finally came to a point where on one side they couldn't do anything to protect someone they wanted to protect, but also both reflected their truest desires: Wendy's lust for power since she kept what she wanted, and Marty protecting his family, by just allowing Ruth to go die. Also, Ruth went out like an absolute boss, still sad to see her go

The uncomfortable fact is that the deaths of Ben, Wyatt and Ruth were consequences of their own actions, not the Byrds. Wendy went out of her way to attempt to save Ben, begged him to leave and even tried to facilitate his escape, or her kids would be killed - and he just ignored her and became a total liability in the end. Wyatt was given chance after chance to have a better life and leave Darlene, he was told he would be killed if he stayed, and he chose to ignore that too. The Byrds begged Ruth not to kill Javi and warned what would happen to her if she did and once again she chose otherwise. The Byrds knew who they were up against and should have been listened to.

Spot on, dude. I have been defending the finale for days now. I think as a screenwriter, I tend to lean more into character and story arcs than other people. And, as I have been saying all week, the characters, the storylines, and the series all came to fruition in what "it" was trying to say. Well done.
And, on a personal note, my fictionalized tempered sociopathic man-crush on 'Jonah' was confirmed in the final moments of the finale. I mean, if you can't shoot an ex-cop, recovering drug addict, trying to do the "right thing" by destroying your family, while stylishly wearing a tuxedo by Gucci... I ah... I'm meeting with my therapist later this afternoon to do a deep dive into my childhood, so... you know, more to be revealed there.

I think the ending was fitting but too abrupt(?)
First off, I loved Ruth. Even in her death she was a more badass than the cartel bitch who shot her. Secondly, her death was a means to an end because they constantly mentioned her as the last Langmore. So there will be no revenge after her murder. Lastly, the idea of evil having the last laugh was perfect. They really nailed it, as the clean record Ruth gets killed while the truest evils laugh away altogether on her casino. Then the cherry on top was of course their innocent son committing murder. The script and narrative were excellent, if you nitpick at each detail individually, it is charismatic.. but I am disappointed how they ended the series so abruptly.

The car accident was a symbol they’re going to leave unharmed in all risky situations…they’re destined to be criminals. They should have been dead by now with all they’ve gone through but miraculously they’re still alive, just like they survived unscathed in that car accident.

Anyone that was surprised that Ruth died is tripping. From the moment she killed Javi, she was done. Plus, all the foreshadowing of her talking to Wyatt's ghost. I was surprised she didn't die sooner, if anything. Especially when she went after control of the casino. Sucks that she went, she's an awesome character, but she had her chances to cut and run. Should've taken those opportunities.

With the symbolisms used constantly throughout the seasons till the climax and secenes established in previous seasons, they nailed the end. Its true to the story and character arcs. Every action has consequences.

Love this explanation of the use of symbolism tying the development of events, motives, decisions and outcomes together forming a steam roller of emotional drama. You would think with all the murders, and the natural consequence of assassinating a leader in the cartel, Ruth's demise would feel like just one more; but it still bums me out. Maybe because her poor decisions overall were more the consequence of generational conditioning, more so than other players. Oh well, she like the Byrde family would never go straight. After all, how could they not use their highly developed skill sets.

Well my analysis is that you work great on no sleep as this was the most entertaining & well thought out review that I've seen yet on the Ozark finale/show (to be fair I've only watched 2 so far but yours was way better than the other guys 😄). No but really in all seriousness I thought this was fantastic, very funny and insightful. I had the same feeling watching Marty and Wendy's reaction to *watching their teenage son KILL a man*! It was heartbreaking that not only Wendy but Marty would smile at that. You could see Marty becoming more and more cold & Wendy-like as the series progressed & I had similar thoughts watching him "be Omar"....seeing how much he'd changed was really sad. I was actually really hoping Wendy would die in the car accident and was disappointed that she didn't but I think your analysis of the car crash was right on the money (pun kinda intended). And don't even get me started on Ruth...I so wanted her to have a happy ending despite everything, I even had visions of her adopting Zeke and peacefully rocking him to sleep by a fire. I thought she could be like this fierce mama lion protector for him. Poor kid been's passed around more than a damn football. But I guess the writers had other things in mind like BRUTALLY KILLING OFF MY FAVORITE CHARACTER 🤬 sigh. Anyway I really didn't care for the ending at all tbh but I still thought it was a brilliant show w/ some of the best acting I've seen in a long time btwn Jason Bateman, Laura Linney (who was already one of my favorite actresses), Julia Garner (who is now also one of my favs) and Tom Phelprey who was just a revelation and seriously underrated IMO. I still think S3 was the best due to him. Anyway, really stellar review 👌 hope you enjoyed your pancakes b/c you deserve them 👍✌

How dellusional a leftist have to be to think that this show had anything related with reality. Female (mexican) drug lord leader, politicians easily made of fools, rich philantropists and judges eaggerly helping Ruth to clean her name, Drug lord being killed out of nowhere without any backup on the top of a big corp building.
Just because the show screams every dogma that your political religion preaches, doesn't mean It has the slightest resemblance with reality.

Phenomenal analysis of this series made some good points on how they will never get out. The birds maybe an invasive species Famliy but they can't even escape the cartel no matter how many kills or cover ups they do. With the ending of the cop it will go on. Cartel leaders can't get out, then the birds never had a chance. My two cents.

Thank you for highlighting all the subtleties and analogies that I missed. I was left wanting more at the end, but then realised that was exactly the point - they're now totally committed as a crime family, and everything ahead will be more of the same; the Family is all that matters. Jonah presents as a grown man and takes on the mantle of executioner, taking him from prey to predator/ protector. I'm strongly reminded of Michael Corleone and the inevitability of embracing his role in the Family in Godfather 1.

Personally I thought that the PI giving his grand reveal was good for the show. At first when I saw the broken window and the shot with Marty and Wendy I thought it was a symbolic piece of how damaged Marty was after all the events. Then I thought that camila sent some one to go after the byrdes and eliminate them, finally the PI presented himself after cracking the case
