HOW TO STABILIZE HANDHELD VIDEO - EASYRIG MINIMAX

  • In this video i'm reviewing my favorite piece of filmmaking gear to help stabilize handheld footage, the easyrig! I own the easyrig minimax and it's helped me stabilize handheld footage for documentaries, commercial filmmaking and branded content.
    There's a place and time for chaotic filmmaking but when you want the subtle movements of body language and emotionality from a scene and want the handheld look, I can't think of a better way to get rid of micro jitters and shaky video than by using the easyrig.
    I show a few example footage of using the easyrig and how it helps to stabilize handheld footage as well as a brief overview of the easyrig minimax itself and how I set it up fo handheld filmmaking.

    Hi David, one thinks you've found all the useful channels and then another pops up! Thanks for this, it's a really good explanation of using the right tool for the job - something I'd not really thought about in terms of camera support - yup, I'm an amateur but involved in a very long term project. Liked and subd.

    Thank You for creating this educational video. Def keeping this one in my playlist I'm new to the videographer/editor world. Yesterday I filmed my first Jazz Festival. Run & gun style. I couldn't carry massive equipment because it was just me & I am not a yougin. LOL. I loved it. I can't wait to do it again. It was so much fun. Taking notes for the next one. Thank You

    Just a tip. You may wanna use a donut around your lens to connect to the matte box. You're getting shadowing and glares showing behind the glass on your footage. Bottom left of frame at 3:53

    Your presentations are wonderful, with wonderful information, wonderfully presented. A very timely subject for me. I can't really fall in love with glidecam-type stabilizers or electronic gimbals, but I love the look of a Steadicam, though they are way beyond my means. I'll be looking at less expensive Easyrig-type rigs by Flycam and others. Many thanks, David.

    The easy rig is not designed to stabilise your shots. It’s there to take the weight off your forearms, move that weight to your body, and so allows for longer shooting days and more comfortable camera angles like shooting from the hip. The Easyrig Stabil arm is designed as a stabiliser.

    • @atdavidlee
      @atdavidlee  3 года назад +5

      Absolutely but the easyrig itself does help to stabilize a handheld shot compared to going with no support at all. For some people having to operate even a 15lbs camera for 10 hours gets tiring so devices like the easyrig help to remove jitters by stabilizing the camera system

    • @oleschreiterdopac696
      @oleschreiterdopac696 3 года назад

      @@atdavidlee quick answer: no.... the easyrig does not remove jitters in anyways. Neither serene or stabil arm can in fact do that. To claim that an easyrig is a type of stabilizer is simply wrong.

    • @atdavidlee
      @atdavidlee  3 года назад +4

      So let’s run through a scenario: you’re operating a 30lbs camera and you don’t have an easyrig but shooting off the shoulder limits your shot selection. How much of your operating is then dependent on your physical strength and agility? All of it is at that point. Then you’ll have to communicate with the director to say in post you’ll need quite a bit of post stabilization for some shots. The easyrig, again compared to pure handheld, for those who want to be able to perform steady shots helps to “stabilize” the shot. Does the easyrig do what a ronin or movi does? No, but can it help you stabilize handheld shots compared to holding a camera for a 10hr day barebones, yes. I’m not saying you can run around with the easyrig like you can with steadicam or a gimbal, but for a lot of handheld work it helps to remove jitters and provide a stable shot again, compared to holding the camera barebones in your hands

    • @bastienchill
      @bastienchill 3 года назад +1

      @@atdavidlee it definitely helps getting smoother shots because of the physics : the Easyrig adds another point of contact, going from 2 to 3 points. Notice I said “smoother”, not talking about any kind of stabilization here.

    • @atdavidlee
      @atdavidlee  3 года назад +3

      Different choice of words but I think people get the point what the easyrig does for handheld 👍

    thanks for great detail review david ! just wondering about the weight capacity itself, seems like ur rig set there is heavy, lemme guess total over than 7kg ? but the web itself says 2-7Kg max load capacity, so how you dealing with this kind of situations ? thanks !

    • @atdavidlee
      @atdavidlee  4 года назад

      The setup I used is well under the capacity for the minimax which is 15.4lbs, I can tell because I haven’t had to increase the tension to the max I still have about 2-3lbs left before hitting it 🙌

    Hey David,
    Great video. I'm an indy filmmaker and a shot I do all the time is walk and talks. With this set up would i be able to walk forward - have the camera facing the talent behind me and frame with a monitor in front of me - and how would that footage look like. Pretty steady? I owned the crane 3 lab and found it hard to shoot those types of scenes. I use the black magic pocket 4k to shoot. Any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks.

      The easyrig can help but you will get some vertical bouncing without the serene arm if you’re walking fast

    I've been using it for about a week and can't get comfortable wearing it. I keep putting way too much strain on my back. I've adjusted every which way, and I just get fatigued after an hour of use. What tips do you recommend? I use a tilta advance rig/ronin 3 Pro with an external monitor.

    • @atdavidlee
      @atdavidlee  4 месяца назад

      Depending on the full weight of your setup the Minimax may not be the best support. Easyrig makes a Easy Tilt for the Vario 5 that can attach to larger setups. For your current setup i'd recommend trying to get down the weight as much as possible.

    Is it possible to use it with a ronin s ? baybe using the ronin s upside down?

    • @atdavidlee
      @atdavidlee  3 года назад

      You can certainly use a ronin S or other sized gimbal with an easyrig but you'd probably want to use some type of dual handle system with the ronin S with the easyrig

    Having a big object in front of a monitor like that is not a good idea. that would really hinder the filming process. It defeats the purpose of having a monitor.

    so to stabilize handheld footage is to:
    -build a heavy rig
