I stopped interlocking 4 months ago and it feels like "freedom at last!". It took my 6 year old telling me she didnt want her locs manipulated anymore. "Mummy can you just wash and dry my hair and leave it? I like it like that". When I was her age I thought of my 4c hair as ugly but I'm so glad my daughter thinks having locs is the most beautiful thing ever.

Beautiful video and beautiful hair, I'm 21 and after years of wearing fake box braids that my mom taught me how to do when I was 13 I started my loc journey last year with my locs above my ears and now they are to my chin and down my neck. I was so scared to step out and go natural but now here I am. I had a very strong feeling to stop retwisting and I felt that my locs were getting skinny and I hated the feeling and thought of snapping my hair to get perfect box sections. So after watching this video it is definately confirmation for me to stop retwisting and just letting my hair do what it wants. Thanks for the video!

Hello 👋🏾, I’m 2 months in along with my 7 year old daughter. We started with two strand twist. We wash once a week and we Don’t retwist. I started with the mindset of not being a slave to my head or hers. She’s the happiest she’s ever been and she doesn’t worry about her hair. I consider this to be a sort of freedom I’ve built for her and myself.

Semi-freeforming certainly takes away the want/need to have control and have everything in place and look nice and neat. Because we can never have full control over everything which is symbolic in our relationship with our hair. Some things just dont need to be “controlled” or “tamed” like they’re an animal lol

There is actually a science and reasoning to what you're saying. With afro hair this is what actually happens it's just likely that looser textured hair may take a bit longer, but for anyone going to the salon to get those banging ass retwists styles, I'm here to tell you, if you naturally start to feel as if this is the route you want to go or you don't feel a need to keep getting retwists go with that. I started doing that I didn't retwist for 6 months, and the stylist started throwing shade about me not going for 6 months. Mind you my locs were thicker which I like them better that way, and they looked just fine too. Anyone shading you for not going to drop money in their pocket is not respecting what you might feel for your OWN hair. It's about the money they're getting from you, so if you happen to experience that from anyone, do not let them touch your hair learn to retwist on your own or leave it as is. (my own opinion) because locticians who are experienced and actually with the spiritual alignment of your hair won't do you like that and the difference is they care about hair for all they people not just the money. You'll sacrifice a more pubically acceptable look for one that your spirit resonates or naturally leans towards. That's no shade on anyone who likes getting styles, I'm just saying, my personal take. Great video again.

    • @holisticflo
      @holisticflo  2 года назад +5

      Wowwww this is the truth!
I have never gone to a loctician before. However, I did have a hairdresser before and you’re right. Anyone that gives a service is prone to be concerned about how much business they are getting, and their client retention, rather than the sole needs of the individual client.
That, or they may simply push their own agenda onto their clients and possibly unintentionally mislead them in their loc journey/natural hair journey because that’s the way the have to operate to have a successful business.
I believe this is why a lot of semi free formers and free formers are not relying on the input of others to help guide their journey, but have taken it into their own hands physically

I don’t have locs yet but am seriously considering it. I think the thin roots when re-twisting happens because cleaning up the parts causes breakage at the roots. I want semi free form locs for that reason. I love the “unpolished” look anyway and love seeing how hair can take it’s own form.

I started my locs on Nov. 10th 2020 and concur with your observations: frequent "retwisting" does more to delay locking as well as damage roots and new growth, than prolonged intervals between retwisting or freeforming does. I commend you for and resonate with your decision to abstain from "taming" your tresses (though I, prior to locking and throughout my semi-natural days, have long been compelled to 'play with' my roots. Partly because of how foreign my own hair texture has always been to me which now translates into compulsively 'twisting' my locs). At this point I alternate between wanting to cut them off, as I miss my long, thick and versatile curls, and loving my "low-maintenance" locs. From the start I wanted them thick, and sadly I started with a sub-par loctician so thickness varies but being prone to loyalty and perseverance, I committed to this journey before it began and your video has reinvigorated my dedication and resolve. Especially with your proud display of all-natural beauty! Much love queen!

That is so logical! I have been locked for 3.5 years and before for 12 years. I use to always groom/twist my locs. This time around I’m older and my hair is graying and thinning so I have stopped twisting my locs after a wash and I do notice them lock much quicker!! I also braid them some times after a wash and take them after after my hair dries, that also helps to loc them up.

Thanks for sharing! I’m 2 years loc’d & my last retwist was 6 months ago! I don’t plan on retwisting again for various reasons. Luckily, for me, my new growth grows with my locs so no maintenance is needed. I’m excited to see what my locs look like as the years progress😊
It’s good to note that not everyone can semifreeform tho due to the way their hair locs. If you have new growth that grows away from the loc, then regular maintenance (retwists) will be needed in order to avoid thinning. The loc that you showed on your hairline could have that issue & that’s why it seems like it’s thinning. The hairs surrounding it aren’t incorporated into that loc (a.k.a the new growth doesn’t grow with / attached to the loc) & so the base is not as full as it could be. I hope that makes sense.
Also, Congratss on graduating college🥳🎉! What was your major/minor & have you found it hard to find a job in that field?

      Thank you for your comment!
I agree that semi-freeforming probably isn't everyone's jam. What you said definitely made sense. I will certainly consider the possibility that the hair grows away from the loc in some areas, that was a great observation. Maybe I'll be able to better tell in the months to come as they continue to mature.
Thanks for the congrats! I graduated from WSSU with a BS in Exercise Physiology. I did not find it difficult to find a job in my field because a lot of people become fitness trainers, coaches, or go on to Physical Therapy School. I chose to start my own business as a mindfulness coach for athletes and also recently snagged a job at L.A. Fitness in sales. I feel like my major may have an advantage over other majors when it comes to finding a job because the fitness industry is so lucrative

Im 1 year and half locked in I just recently got my second retwist ever I have semi Freeform Locs this is probably going to be my last retwist I don’t know yet but it’s a known fact that retwist are not supposed to lock up your hair it’s supposed to KEEP YOUR NEW GROWTH IN PLACE IN TO HELP IT LOCK UP but your new growth is not going to lock up within one retwist you have to constantly keep doing it which is pretty pointless if you think about it you’re better off just reforming your new growth people want their dreads to look super neat all
The time which is perfectly fine but trying to make it looks super neat it was destroying their locks because there are not allowing their dreadlocks to do its own thing people tend to forget that dreadlocks are very unpredictable Dreadlocks are supposed to do whatever they want to do(which is freeforming etc) instead of people try to control on how they want their locks to look which ends up being really bad for the hair that’s why I’m against having made sections(such as having‘s squared box sections stc) Having made sections is what can lead to locs falling out because you had your sections made for you rather than having natural sections and the locks are supposed to have natural sections having made sections can lead to locks falling out because what if there isn’t enough hair in that section etc which is why I prefer the semi freeform or freeform Route Trust me everything I said I know what I’m talking about from personal experience with my last set of locs

But ultimately, as you said, and I completely agree, there isn’t a need to really be re-twisting every six months to a year if your hair is healthy and is able to form tight enough locks and retain moisture and overall integrity without someone going in and palm rolling AK re-winding up the ropes

Hey. I just want to comment on your comment about how requesting doesn’t really do much.
In my opinion, you’re not wrong. Anybody who goes for a regular re-twist whether it be every month to six or plus, it doesn’t really change the overall shape of the hair as well as the integrity of the lock. I’ll re-twisting does is show to a degree which points in your hair week and if you think of it like a rope, You wind it back up it gets tighter. With the oils and natural kinking and nodding of the hair, what you achieve is a technique or term called reconstruction. Almost like body recomposition when you’re working out and trying to achieve a new physique
