    I watched this film because my mum and aunt were extras in it. I didn't manage to spot them but never the less I'm glad I saw it. Way better than most of the stuff churned out these days for sure. Funny coincidence, I also met Richard O'Sullivan whilst in a pub garden, don't remember where as I was just a little kid, he was in Man About The House at the time. He saw me staring at him and asked me if I'd like some peanuts, he was eating from a bag of KP nuts. I ran to mum and dad and checked it was OK and he gave me the rest of the bag. Really nice, genuine bloke. It would have been around 50 years ago, I've never forgotten it.

    Enjoy the movie so far.Reminds me of when I was the only black girl in my class (for awhile)until 2 other girls joined later .That was was I the mid sixties in England where I was born.I faced racism from one particular boy but got along with the teacher and every other student.I didn't make waves and was disciplined from home.Those were good school days and won't exchange them for anything.

    Another great upload from Flick Vault. When I saw Max Bygraves on the credits I must admit I wasn't expecting much, but it's a fantastic little drama, and he is surprisingly good in it. Donald Pleasance is always good value as an actor, and the young cast of "kids" are all superb, especially a very young Richard O'Sullivan. All in all, a wonderful movie. Thanks again Flick Vault!

    I've seen a number of films concerning a deprived school, with a new teacher that turns pupil's resentment into a keenness to learn. This was easily the best by far. Nice to see Max Bygraves as the new teacher, Donald Pleasance as the head, Richard O'Sullivan as the class monitor.

    A well-scripted portrayal of the real difficulties and challenges of attempting to provide educational opportunity to low-income, working class kids.
    Best quote by fellow teacher, _"Teaching is a mugs game in my opinion. Short pay, hard work, and no thanks for it. A dead-end job.... _*_Take Care."_*
    ISR, my hat forever comes off for each and every teacher with the dedicated "fortitude" to even make a serious and heart-felt attempt. 👍
    Rightfully on-par with American-made "Blackboard Jungle", "To Sir, With Love" , and even another *_excellent_* English film, *"Violent Playground".*

      Yes, what I like is the master is realistic. For him, getting just ONE boy into an apprenticeship at a factory is enough to make the job worthwhile. He doesn't expect to turn them all into university graduates.

    Very good - a bit of BLACKBOARD JUNGLE, ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK, and more than enough Kitchen Sink drama of the era. Always a surprise to see Donald Pleasance in his early days, before he became such a staple in horror films. He stars in a strange Roman Polanski film, CUL-DE-SAC, and did quite a bit of live theatre. Richard O'Sullivan, who plays young Fred, had a long tv career and also appeared as Elizabeth Taylor's brother, the Pharoah, in CLEOPATRA.

The glory days of schooling with a surprisingly good cast of Donald Pleasence, Geoffrey Keen, Eleanor Summerfield, 70’s sitcom star Richard 0’ Sullivan and Jeremy Bulloch of Star Wars fame as an unruly kid support variety performer Max Bygraves in “England’s green and pleasant land.”

      In the early 60s Mr Bygraves apparently took the decision that he would pursue the light-entertainment/singing side of his career instead of acting. I think it probably did not matter as he would have been popular either way. I got the impression from programmes like 'Family Fortunes' that he had that same type of easy charm that Bruce Forsyth had which would have enabled him to do well in any walk of life.

    I am an experienced teacher and encountered this experience a few times. Never literally fight with them but just listened and let the nastiness flowed. Most (male) teachers of that period came to the task as de-mobbed blotter-jockeys from the armed forces and post-war surplus civil servants, who'd done the "emergency" year at teacher training college. For them it was just a job rather than a vocation. Those who proved to be any good, soon moved upon up to grammar schools in better catchments. Those who remained behind, but stayed on were the dead-beats, like the characters depicted here, who in time developed their technique based upon authoritative intolerance. Many were as big an impediment to kids' progress as their own feckless parents. There used to be a saying "Those who can, do; those who can't, teach." It pretty-well summed-up their cohort. I remember them very well, and with no fondness at all...

    • @Londonfogey
      @Londonfogey 2 года назад

      I think the main problem was that by siding with a pupil against a teacher, even though the pupil was in the right, Saunders had undermined the authority of all the other staff. The headmaster got this right I think. It was a no-win situation and Saunders realised he would be better off elsewhere.

    Thank you so much for uploading this film. I read the novel on which it is based and always wanted to see if Mr Bygraves could act or not! Although it now looks very dated (I wonder how many London state school teachers give a Bible reading to their class each morning nowadays...) in some ways even by the standards of 2022 it is quite shocking, with a 14 year old girl attempting to seduce her teacher, and a bunch of kids smashing up the school and trying to burn it down.

    "To Sir, With Love" without the music, thank heavens (though I could have done without Margaret hitting on "Sir"). At least a lot less violent than our American "Blackboard Jungle," "Rock Around the Clock," and a number of other late 50's and 1960's "hooligan films" in England and the U.S.A. Very entertaining. I'm glad they addressed "Olive," the biracial child. Perhaps this is novel for the times that she is addressed at all, especially at the very end of the film. She had no speaking during the whole film, and race was never ever mentioned.

      I think Margaret hitting on 'sir' is an important part of the film. It shows how the sordid living conditions of the children have led them to be old before their time, and also the risks of being a teacher of such a pupil - a less cautious man could easily have found himself in a compromising position with Margaret which could have ruined his career. The dangers of that school are greater than just being locked in a lavatory all night.
