At least on RUclips you can choose what you watch. The tv programmers and the people at the streaming services are idiots. Just like everyone in the music and radio businesses too, and half the newspapers. They all have an agenda of 1 sort or the other, and NONE of them have any interest at all in quality content.
But the content on RUclips is not chosen by RUclips, even though it's censored by them, because of copyright laws. Those laws are far too restrictive, but that's a different issue completely. There are TONS of garbage here, but I don't care because I never see it. There's more than enough good stuff to keep me busy 24/7! 😉

I'm 68 years old, every Saturday or Sunday afternoon watched gainsborough black and white films on TV as a child, loved it then and still do .

When I was a child in Scotland these were the actors whose films were shown on TV on rainy afternoons. I grew up with them, even though I was not born until after most of their films were made. Some like John Laurie were still appearing on television. It’s like seeing long departed dear old friends and family come alive again. We don’t get stories with morals or points like these any longer, and nothing today is left to our imaginations such as what would happen to Miss Bishop and Major Templeton.
We surely know that at least they had half a year PARADISE,
instead three years waiting for DEATH.
The best decision they could ever have made!!
I miss the days of Saturday and Sunday afternoon movies, and on some independent stations in the U.S. in the early afternoons on weekdays too. Of course, I was the only one around watching them, nearly always by myself. Everyone else was watching sport(s), which bored me to tears.

For Sunday afternoon films: home from Church: Sunday roast eaten: then into the lounge room with the Film: sometimes there were two films: then 6pm the old fashioned "wonderful world of Disneyland": was on also every Sunday.
As a European Pole, born in the late 20th century, I too agreed that today's movies are nothing but rubbish.

That was better than having to change the time of the afternoon church ⛪️ service because if it wasn’t changed people were staying home to watch Bonanza instead of going to church. I was born in 1950. My parents would read to me stories written by Somerset Maugham. One of my favourite authors. I love these stories brought to life in film. Thank you for showing this film.

I couldn't find anything on cable there was some movies but not like these I like these kind of English movies and back in the 1700s and 1800s. I stay riveted watching and don't doze it all I tend to doze a lot lately cuz I'm almost 90 years old and this kept me awake the whole time thanks again.🤩🤩

The Verger is my all time favourite story. I smile with tears in my eyes the whole way through ❤
I liked when the bank manager asked him what he would've been if he could read and he answered 'I'd be the verger at St. Peter's Church.'

It is January 2020 and I may be late to the party here, but delighted to have arrived all the same. This is my third viewing of this wonderful film - there is another one Quartet, here as well. Maugham's stories are so delightful. Moreover, as a businesswoman of 71, newly resettled in New Orleans, the idea of being an 'elder-preneur' appeals to me, hugely. The VERGER of course is my favorite story in this group. Thanks ever so...

This is such a treat. True artistry in effortless storytelling.
I am not alone when I say that films such as this one convey a warmth that is totally absent from contemporary efforts. A sort of comfort you might say.
That's it, warmth! Sometimes I see a modern movie, a remake of an old one and the new one is just lacking. Not detail, not costumes, not location, but warmth.

Character driven brilliance
I loved this, so gracious, beautiful storytelling.
I am so used to films with bitter twists that from the first of the trio I was feeling stressed, readying for something awful to happen. But then I was able to relax after all. What a delight to find this!
I was just thinking the same thing! I am always waiting for something horrible to happen. I was sure the bank was going to rook the man out of his money in the Verger and that the doctor of the sanitorium was keeping people their for years, to control them and make money. It's 2021 and my mistrust is out of control.
@@PrimeDirective101 Yes I have to say I believe that in the late 20th and early 21st centuries your mistrust is WELL founded...!!! The more I research the more I am certain of it. Things that used to be called conspiracy theories that have turned out to be conspiracy FACTS include our own government giving Americans syphillis on purpose, using them in mind control experiments (such as MK Ultra) and Project Paperclip which gave new names and well-paid and even very sensitive positions in our government to Nazi scientists who would otherwise should have been imprisoned for life at the very least for what they did. All of these things have been ADMITTED but (of course) most media refuses to talk about it -- because things like this (and worse) are going on today. FACT.

I get the same feeling of bracing for the horrible twist. When a movie is too cheery for too long, I get suspicious. ...
In crazy time like this, it is so comforting to be able to enjoy those classics and find a little peace. I love the story of The Verger: When one door is closed, another door opens for you. Universe always has the best and right plan. I also enjoyed Know It All: We always tend to judge a human based on our own experience. Sometimes you can find a good heart from the most unexpected person.

I’m leaving a message to say I am enjoying each Trio tale. I have heard of Somerset Maugham for years, but never read his story or seen any more made from his stories. His stories here are so practical and comical and comforting.

The British classic's were well written and adapted to film back then. Very comforting to read that there is still people who appreciate them.
True story. Many years ago, maybe in '94, I went to visit my mother in London. A neighbor had past away and somehow she came into possession of a book he owned. I read the first story and immediately fell in love with the author W. Somerset Maugham and the first story was The Verger. That ending is everything! Anyways, thanks for the upload, it's appreciated.
What I love about this movie is that the protagonist is a simple man who stays the way he is and survives on his own terms!
Jonathan, I came across this by complete chance and how fantastic to see so many positive comments. Thank you for sharing. My Father, Antony Darnborough managed to convince Maugham to allow him to turn many of his short stories into films - many had tried and failed before him. A few years ago we gave all the stills from Trio, Quartet and Encore (and a few others) to the British Film Institue so that they would be cared for and available for everyone.
You can hear my father introduce each film before Maugham. Just for good measure, my uncle Muir conducted the music. Thanks again.
P.S. The Verger was always my favorite.
Your father made the excellent film "So long at the fair" in 1950 with Dick Bogarde and Jean Simmons. This is not avialable in youtube in the English version but only in an Italian dubbed version! It's a pity outdated copy right rules shoud block historic and artistic important films to be available for all.

I too love the Verger. It's moral story is just as good today as when it was written. If you don't know you can't do it you could possibly be able to do it! All you have to do is believe in yourself. I'm sure this could have possibly been based on somebody that really existed because back then you didn't need even a high school diploma to be able to create something out of your life. Nobody was looking at a piece of paper they were looking at you.
My husband holds a position in his company that today he would not even be looked at as an applicant to be an assistant. He had to get a GED because his last semester of high school was interrupted. He didn't go to college because there wasn't the money but he worked himself into experience & apprenticeship to the point that when he took this job almost 40 years ago he was immediately put into a position at a very young age of management. Though the company has hired and fired several different supervisors above him they were too frightened to move him into those positions because they didn't want to lose him 4 he is the one who keeps their manufacturing humming from below the ground to above in the air and works with all federal state and local agencies. When they hired a company to find out how they could improve all of their departments his Department was the only one that not only outdid the top Fortune 500 companies in all areas of accountability but exceeded them coming in 25% under budget & short staffed to such an extreme they sent a team in & monitored his management style for a month to see what they could use for suggestions towards other companies!re.
You make yourself, & hopefully with someone you love & believes in you beside you.
I loved that, Maugham was such a gifted Storyteller, and the Acting was perfect for this one!!!

I recently saw a programme, a lot newer than this, called “ tales of the unexpected “ . It started with a verger being sacked because he could not read or write, started a cafe with his wife. Years later he was asked the same question as here and gave the same answer. “ where would you be if you could read and write” the answer was ‘still a verger ‘. So apart from this original film and the more recent, one being a tobacconists and the more recent being a cafe, both good stories by W Somerset Maughan. Always liked tales of the unexpected.
I was filled with anxiety until I watched the video. By the end of the second story, I noticed I my breathing was calm, pleasant and unforced. Thoroughly enjoy watching these classic Sommerset Maugham movies. Razor’s Edge a favorite. Thank you.

Thank you for posting this movie. In 1998 I was on a British Airways flight returning from London to Chicago. I asked a tall Englishman if he could place something for me in the overhead compartment. His reply was, enchanted. I’ll never forget that.

A real gem; beautifully acted, great stories. Although in an age when sex or violence forms part or all of the plot their absence makes the film seem unique. A joy to watch
I have seen this film five times and still find it heartwarming. I have always been a fan of Kathleen Harrison and when I was younger I wanted her to be my auntie. As for James Hayter I still refer to him as Mr. Kipling (those of a certain age will know why). I thoroughly enjoyed all three films and want to thank you for making them available to us. Absolutely brilliant.

Very sweet movie. I could watch movies of this ilk all day. Jean Simmons has been a favorite of mine for many years.
This is good old fashioned proper acting, great cinematography , good story lines , if I could I would open a Cinema and run oldies like this all the time with discounts for seniors.
Such lovely stories...each one a treasure!
The 1st was quite a remarkable story of one door closing and another opening for the better.
The 2nd story was quite entertaining in how others come to realize the 'good' in someone who many already made up their minds to dislike and judge as annoying.
The 3rd one was a needed lesson meant for others in the same situation.
A Gem of a film, I have watched it several times, each story delightful, what a wonderful storyteller, Somerset Maughan was. Each actor was perfectly cast .One note Jeanne Simmons never lost her gentleness, it remained with her even when she went to Hollywood

When I first watched `Mr Know-It-All" I thought that the lady with the pearls had bought them for herself and was just deceiving her husband about the cost. After a second watch I realised that she must have had an affair in her husband's absence and they'd actually been bought for her by her boyfriend...

I can't thank you enough for posting these wonderful films. I've enjoyed them more than I can say. They show that great films can be made without swear words, explosions, and computerized imaging. I haven't got the slightest interest in going to the movies these days, when I can go to RUclips and see films like this. You've made a lot of people very happy!

It is alarming, the way the current film makers seem to think that entertainment is best served by including as many situations of stress, conflict, nastiness , cruelty, graphic close-ups of torture, etc......
On t.v., here ( England) , October 2017, there is a trailer for various "action" films, and after a selection of stress-filled short clips, they put on the screen, " all the best bits " .
You should see the shelves of ' popular ' videos at Asda, the vast majority of cover pictures suggesting violent content.
Young people seeing these things will take the view that this is everyday life, that extreme behaviour is ' normal ' .
It might explain the general increase in selfish, bad behaviour ....
For many years I have been very concerned that violent films can have deep psychological effects.....
So these great o!d films, although some did portray crime, etc, much more effort was put into the sets, acting, lighting, costumes, and over all, you get an entertaining, often thought- provoking result, interesting rather than upsetting.

It is so sad that most young people today, don't know the difference between love and lust. These films that give one hope, desire for goodness, and most of all great writer's work in film. Thank you for posting a time that should never be forgotten and I hope that the word, Lady and Gentlemen will come their true meaning once again. Sure there were always evil people in the world, but they were looked at as pathetic and not honored in movies as they are today. Thank you again.

Another great Gainsborough film that I missed, and with another superb cast. I shall wonder unto my dying day why this studio was disbanded. Many, many thanks to our host.
I so remember these kind of movies when I had to stay home from grade school with a cold. My mother would make special tea and chicken soup and we'd cozy under a blanket and watch these old films together. I cherish those memories.
We don't so much have actors and actresses today. We have marketing personal to sell an image, a thought process or a product. The films are base, trite and outright vulgar. Portrayed in such a way as to make all of these despicable acts normal. By no stretch of the imagination am I prudish. I sailed through the sexual revolution nearly unscathed. lol
But what we have now........garbage

Children are inundated from grade school; even t.v. ads are sometimes just plain dirt!! I do not believe it's going to get better.. hold onto your hat.

Somerset Maugham has always been one of my favorite writers and to see him here is a delight ! it is true , he was a master story teller - but what is more true , is that he had an eye like a scalpel and an enormous scope , his large amount of work should be read by everyone , no word he ever wrote is untrue and all are pointed to a higher morality based on kindness !

OMG! Nigel Patrick’s performance as Max Kealada, Mr Know-It-All was faultless! I so enjoyed Trio. Many thanks.
Like the narrator, we tend to take an instant dislike to Max Kelada (Nigel Patrick). He is pushy, rude, overbearing, conceited and delusional (he imagines himself to be the most popular person on the ship).
But there is more to him than that. His supreme confidence is born of his competence in business, and in other areas. Kalada is relentlessly cheerful, never takes anything personally, genuinely likes people and tries to make sure everyone on board is having fun (he personally organizes a lottery, a talent show, and a costume ball). He is also a man of the world, generous and compassionate.
I love the final moments, as his berth mate (Wilfred Hyde-White), comes to appreciate the depth of character in the man he had misjudged.
"Call me Max." Ha ha ha!
And this is all accomplished in just a few minutes in this insightful short story!
Somerset Maugham is such a wonderful story teller...and gets the human condition. Thank you for uploading.

Totally charmed by Mr. Maugham, out of his element just a bit, speaking on screen. All the same, well worth seeing! And I for one thought QUARTET adapted beautifully to film. as did TRIO.

I've never seen these old films before. I'm 67 years of age and I truly love British films. I lived in Europe for a total of 8 years! The British know how to make films more than American's.

I watched this movie several times. Charming stories.
I really enjoyed this movie. Wonderful acting and very thought-provoking as well. Give me these old movies anytime. Maybe one day producers and directors will realize that they don't need computers/special effects to make a great movie.
