The cold winter of 1963. I loved it, was 15 and had a couple of weeks added onto the christmas hols.
I love these old films . When English was correctly spoken and understood .

@@eddie1235 These are meant to be East End Cockneys so speaking a local dialect which is far removed from the Queen's English

As soon as I saw the snow I thought 1963, apparently this was made that year. Thank you for another great old English film.

This was made in 1963 the worst winter on record. We had 2 foot of snow in somerset and school closed !
I know and realize the pace of these old Brit heist films are way out of step today, but their patience is what makes them so compelling.
Films in those days were meant to be savoured.

Wow!!! Music composed and directed by THE George Martin
It felt like a made for TV film. Nice casting. The bomb and the weak beam plus Britain’s unluckiest criminal... this was a heist that could never be. Everyone had a character flaw but it was a compelling watch. Thanks George Martin for beatling around on the harpsichord!
I really love this channel - it's actually educated AND entertained me so much so far - some excellent films made to a very high standard.

Tough but kind, l knew lots of men of that time who were just like this, they had been through the war. Not a touch of viciousness but you wouldn’t want to square off with them.

A rather unique film, with a surprise ending, unlike many films today which are nothing more than predictable sequels to sequels, with great special effects but mindless stories...

Yeah.... Global warming hadn't quite kicked in back in the 60's... It didn't take it long though 3.5 billion humans later.

Cracking film.I was a 9 year old when this came out. I remember that cold long winter well. Seems like a different world we live in now

This one was quite excellent. Can anyone recommend similar low key heist capers of this type like The League of Gentlemen, Rififi and The Asphalt Jungle? Also the end seems to really slam into you in movies like this- was this common or are bits cut out from the originals?
A Prize of Arms (1962), Ring of Spies - not heist/spy movie but great. (1964), Robbery (1967) Villain ( 1971) richard burton.
Takes me back --- the prison is Wormwood Scrubs and the market is Shepherds Bush

I can't believe after all that the ending is cut off. I can't believe it went straight to the credits after the explosion.. does anyone know?
Great movie. It would help, however, if the "Subscribe" and the "Watch Next" blurbs would hold off for a few seconds until after the final scene is actually over! When loading up a film why not let it go for about 10 seconds after it ends so the blurbs can be shown AFTER the film is over?
Whooh now we got the complete opening to the movie,only the ending was cut out.

Try Googling "Mr Nightingale bank robber" and read about a real-life "tunneling bank job" in South Africa in the early 1970's. I don't think "Mr. Nightingale" has ever been caught.

And would have ended with the heist succeeding and likely netting several millions.

A Brit heist flick ala Rififfi. Love these old gritty BW flims.I was rooting for the robbers.
The church looked gorgeous in the snow, I was only 4 (5 in Aug) of 63 so I don't really remember the bad winter.
So, everyone who doesn’t get blown up gets arrested? Sure would have been great to see the end of the movie.

He got free from the beam, but not the bomb, pity. His friend needn't worry about his ticker going, the bomb's ticker went first. All kidding aside, it was a really good movie that ended in a bang. Just couldn't pass that up. Really well set up with a surprise ending. Thanks UK and Flick Vault for an excellent crime drama!

@phil Walton I think he meant his question to be sarcastic, but your reply to him was simply rude. Besides, there are so many dialects of the English language that even fluent English speakers often don't understand some dialects.
Ancient Sanskrit, which had all but died out in London but is making a bit of a come back.
