A little factoid for all those musicians who were wondering ... Barry Warren, like Dirk Bogarde before him, took piano lessons for the role, and the film's music director, John Hollingsworth, was so impressed that he suggested that Warren take up the piano professionally. The miming is thus convincing ...
Attention to detail is what sets these Hammer movies apart. For example, when Gerald knocks on the door of the Hotel and an anguished voice calls out, "Why can't you leave us alone?" (I paraphrase). This hints at something sinister and reinforces the mood set in the opening funeral scene. This is how to create a great gothic horror film. Take a lesson modern Hollywood. Subtlety beats Cliché every time.

Typical Hammer movie: lush vivid color, superb cinema photography, intense and incomparable music of James Bernard that heightens tension, superb attention to detail, and above all, true to life story based on the factual rather than the implausible old wives tales.
