Kia Rio GT-Line v Toyota Yaris SX v Suzuki Swift GLX Turbo: 2021 city car comparison!

  • The light car market in Australia has stepped up a price bracket, with new small cars commanding bigger prices due to increases in safety equipment and in-car technology - and these three city hatchbacks are no exception.
The models we have here are all considerably more expensive for 2021 than they used to be. The all-new Toyota Yaris model took a huge jump up in price, and we've got the SX model in this test, which is the most expensive of this trio.
Below it is the upgraded Suzuki Swift Series II, which has been given some fresh safety technology to improve its appeal in the urban car market.
And there's also the Kia Rio GT-Line, which takes a sportier approach to the light car lifestyle, with a revised look, new tech and a sporty stance.
Which is the best of these three small hatch models, and why? You'll have to watch the review to find out!

Just bought a Kia Rio 2021 hatchback and it's awesome! Tech features are stellar and it's so much fun to drive..great handling. And it doesn't LOOK like a compact car. It has a nice body shape and is not a tiny rollerskate-looking car.

Lack of Push-Start ignition on the RIO is *NOT* a disadvantage.
Push-Button Start is a solution to a problem that simply didn't exist. Plus, read the owner's manual. There are a number of utterly ridiculous reasons why a car equipped with it, won't recognize the key-fob assigned to it. _Translation ~_ Your car won't start. Thus leaving you stranded wherever you might be. (How lovely.) It's worse than useless. At least a useless feature can be ignored or switched off if it comes equipped as standard on a car a buyer wants. Push-Button Start is something you can't ignore. Comes with zero advantages over a traditional folding key on a car's fob, and comes with the HUGE disadvantage of not working at all. A very real possibility. But, that's not an issue on the RIO.
Also, cars in this segment tend to be kept longer by their owners; since those owners are on a budget. Long-term reliability is important. So is a good, long warranty in case something breaks down. Again, the RIO has the clear advantage over these two competitors.

Why do you hate keyless start so much? You say there are a number number of ridiculous reasons why a car won’t start with it but don’t mention any. I had the same opinion as you regarding keyless start until i bought my first car with keyless start some 10 years ago and since then I’ve had multiple keyless every cars and i have never been stranded anywhere. It does come with an advantage over a traditional key as it is very convenient not to have to grab the key about of your pocket.

I will honestly just go for the Suzuki Swift (But in the GL Navigator Plus trim), since your saving a few grand and close to the $20 grand mark. You might miss out on some performance feature (it a city car after all). However, you do get the same suite of safety features as present in the GLX Turbo. The only other subcompact that still retains the "Value for money" proposition but still has some active-safety gear is the Skoda Fabia.

The thing about the Toyota Yaris is that it is too light: 2,315lbs, compared to the Rio: 2,762 lbs. You can feel this if you ride the cars on the highway. The lighter the car, the more motion sickness the riders are prone to. I've had this issue while driving the Yaris, but I've never had this issue driving the Rio.
