  • Skyrim is a land in turmoil at the onset of The Elder Scrolls 5 as an uprising led by Jarl Ulfric Stormcloak seeks to break Skyrim free of rule from the Septim Empire. The Stormcloak cause is a controversial one, some see them as righteous liberators, restoring freedom to Skyrim - While others view them has a group of disorganized bandits with little legitimacy. However you see them, the Stormcloaks and their leader, Ulfric Stormcloak, are an iconic and influential force in the game. And like everything else in Skyrim Special Edition, there's quite a few Easter Eggs, tiny details and hidden facts surrounding them. So today we'll be taking a look at five things you (probably) didn't know about the Stormcloaks of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

Skyrim heavily relies on supplies (including food) from Cyrodiil, if the stormcloaks win mass starvation is basically guaranteed in a few years, Ulfric is a Thalmor puppet whom doesn’t even realise it and thus he doesn’t have much foresight, he wasn’t high ranking in the Great War after all and has no commanding experience outside of his rebellion

    When you realise the 'old ways' Galmar is referring to was filled with Nord weapons that were superior to the elven counterparts, Nords like Azidahl, Shalidor, the Dragon Priests like Morokei who had control of the Eye of Magnus and made a staff to sync with it, Jyrik Gauldurson who enchanted his own body and his brothers who were powerful in their own right, whomever made the wooden mask that teleports the wearer *through time*, had made platforms out of magic lasting thousands of years, enchanted weapons that required no soul gems to recharge and ice weapons of which the Skaal continue to use to this day and can only be mined with a Nord pickaxe that despite being thousands of years old, is the only pickaxe strong enough to harvest it, yet despite all this the Nord nationalists are heavily against magic because they believe it's purely elven stuff.

      I remember an argument people would make for the Stormcloaks saying that Ulfric wants to abolish the Empire's influence on Skyrim which was the justification for him damning the Moot but it that argument falls flat when you realise that the Nine Divines are from the Imperial Pantheon, Magic was heavily Nordic thousands of years ago and that the Nords worshipped animals (including dragons which nobody wants) in their "Old Ways"

    • @classydays43
      @classydays43 3 года назад +21

      @@NiceuRiceu I don't think Ulfric wants to revert back to those days as such, but it's interesting to consider the heritage he views is very imperialistic when the true nords practised magic ad nauseum.
      On the topic of magic being a major proponent of Ancient Nord culture, I have a loose theory that Atmorans were partly responsible for developing necromancy. The Draugr, and the whole deal with Morthal, are prime examples of this where Atmorans were almost obsessed with the undead. Another fun thing o think about is almost no Aedra or Daedra that we know has anything to do with the possibility of the undead (seeing as most things on Nirn are bound to the influences of these deities).

      But the Stormcloaks don't see other races well in their eyes, almost like a sort of superiority complex. Ulfric even holds back his troops when non-nord villages are in danger. It's sounds like he only wants native Skyrim to conquer the Thalmor. The problem is that (should the Stormcloaks win the civil war) other Jarls won't side with Ulfric; Balgruf of Whiterun for example. Not to mention they'd most probably hold animosity towards Ulfric for driving the empire out of Skyrim and wrecking the land in the war. The Stormcloaks wanting to march to the Thalmor capitol and conquer them, seems to be nothing more than pure arrogance. If the Empire, a nation possessing one of the mightiest militaries in Tamriel, sees the Thalmor armies as a legitimate threat, what chance does a small army, lead by a man who sees his own race as the only one that's respectable, truly have?

    I have a mystery - what was a group of Stormcloaks led by Ulfric Stormcloak doing near Darkwater Crossing? It must've been something more than just patrolling, because their leader was present.
    And, considering that Darkwater Crossing is part of the Stormcloak territory, what were the Imperials doing there as well? Did a spy tell them that Ulfric Stormcloak is going to be at Darkwater Crossing?
    By the way, most people assume that your character is arrested while trying to cross the Cyrodiil-Skyrim border. But the Imperials arrested the protagonist along with the Stormcloaks, so the protagonist must have been near Darkwater Crossing at the time they were arrested.
    As to why the Imperials took them to Helgen to be executed, Helgen is the nearest Imperial-controlled town.
    And they probably arrested Lokir in a different ambush near the Skyrim-Hammerfell border.

    Ulfric being a traditionalist, I'd like to imagine that what he means by rebuilding Skyrim is reclaiming the heritage; returning to the ways of Kyne and practicing her gift, grooming new tongues the likes of those that slaughtered the Falmer & Ayelid murderers & tyrants in days past, and even bringing forth the clever-men to dismantle elven magic

"Send my regards" is typically something you say about someone who is dead when you are about to kill someone else.

(trans: "So young and already in the stormcloaks?") is the German dubbing for "Aren't you a little short for a Stormtrooper?" but it is translated that way because in German an actual translation is too wordy for scene in the movie, so they shortened it up and took the hit on an inaccurate translation.

    Edit:Adding Suggestion - Hidden quests you may have missed. Some of them you've covered in details, but not all.
    Ulfric's aggressiveness is enhanced by Galmor. That man is a warmonger. Frankly, they are incredibly short-sighted. Ulfric forgets just how many will be needed to face the Thalmor. He should remember the losses from before. Though, I think his ego and Galmor's mouth feed him to make these unwise decisions. The capture, torture, and the mental strain related have messed him up, darkened his outlook and clouded his mind. If he had at least one or two more level heads around him, things would be quite different. They would point out things like - the cost. He's not got the type of money needed to fund a war against the Thalmor and likely never will. Wars are expensive, and I guarantee he doesn't realize they just can't make it work. The Empire, however, has pretty deep pockets. Of course punishing people for following one diety or another is wrong, but he could discourage people from reporting others and/or require all Thalmor must be escorted to disallow them from randomly grabbing people without proof. It would stop most of the thing that is the most egregious and feeding the anger.

      @@litewave5186 but what does assassination mean towards anything? You can assassinate a ruler and not have the intention to replace them with yourself. He actually states that he had respected Torygg but disagreed with his political stance. That stance got Ulfric arrested in Markarth, then when he was in jail his father died and he missed the opportunity to say goodbye to him. So his responsibiles went from drinking, fighting, and having fun to being a Jarl. When he spoke out against Torygg's decision to outlaw Talos, someone he was raised to believe was a God, it forced both into a position they had no other option but to duel for their honor. You can duel and still respect the other person, the only problem was Ulfric was stronger and had a weapon Torygg didn't, the thuum. He used it and killed him easily, but he claims he didn't do it for personal glory, but because it was for honor. He doesn't strive to be king but wouldn't deny the people that if thats what they decided they wanted. He was a man of the people but the imperials instead wanted to persecute the people for having beliefs and did whatever the AD wanted. Ulfric in my opinion was a honorable person and did what he felt he needed to, to help his people. He even put his life on the line multiple times to do that, Torygg was a good man too but was misguided, he wanted an end to the war and unfortunately didn't do the right thing by his people but did it to protect them, knowing full well it would not go over in his favor

If Ulfic had merely approached Torygg they MAY or may NOT have come to an agreement on how to fight the Thalmor with the Empire-- we just don't know and ultimately it's up to player interpretation, as with (I think) all of the mainline Elder Scrolls games.

    • @naggie6358
      @naggie6358 2 года назад +7

      The issue with that is that the Dragonborn is, alas, just one person. Granted an endgame Dragonborn is -very- powerful, not unbeatable but certainly very powerful. But the problem is that they can only be in one place at a time, and the simplest strategy to handle that would be to just...not fight them head on. You have to bear in mind that the Dominion's army was large enough to engage and best the entirety of the Imperial one, the Imperial army being drawn from multiple provinces of Tamriel. By contrast, the Stormcloak army can recruit and gain supplies from Skyrim, which is less than ideal.
      The practical up shot of this is that the Dominion possesses the sheer numbers to simply slow down the Dragonborn and avoid directly engaging where ever they are, while other Dominion forces can outflank the Dragonborn's army or simply attack places where they arent. They might never achieve a crushing tactical victory, but a strategic one is well within their grasp.

You come in as the second war begins against the damn el... I mean Thalmor you get beaten in battle along with your legion and left for dead. The map could be all of Cyrodil, maybe some of Hammerfell and High-Rock. We could have a war system like Skyrim was supposed to have only more in depth with even forts being target of huge dramatic cinematic battles. We could have a politcal part of the main quest where we have to pursuede the kings of High Rock to help us and Hammerfell to join the fight. For the final main quest chain we could invade the Thalmor capital in Summerset Isles. We would have the normal Daedric sidequests and for one of the DLCs we could go to what ever realm Umbra ( the sword from Oblivion apparently broke free form Clavicus by time Skyrim happened I just learned about a month ago) has created for himself. We could see what how Kvatch has recovered. And so forth.

    I like ulfric. He is a very chill guy. Tullius is too aggressive and pushy for me. That's why I like the dark brotherhood and the thieves guild, because they are also very chill people. I like hanging around the factions that make me feel stoned without actually being stoned.

    Did you know that in the Thieves Guild quest "Taking care of business", there are other ways to have the 3 people in debt cough up their gold? If you ask Brynjolf for more information about each of the people in debt, he tells you exactly what to do to get those people to pay up 100g without having to brawl any of them. At least 2000 hrs in Skyrim and this is the first time I realized you can do this.

      Yeah I always felt bad on that quest. They’re just shopkeeps trying to live. The one where you burn the beehives I was also a little iffy with. But since you can just use blackmail instead of hurting them physically I go that route. And I just pretend the bees leave once the hives are on fire and then come back after a bit

    I wonder what the Stormcloaks would think if they tried to attack the Thalmor and found out there are hordes of undead Nords taken by the Thalmor Judiciary in the game. That being the very reason the Empire was quietly preparing for War.
