  • Skyrim is a land inhabited by many fierce creatures and beings. Perhaps one of the most common are the Draugr. Ancient, undead foes that guard the various Nordic ruins and tombs of The Elder Scrolls 5. While they're generally though to be one of Skyrim's more generic, less unique enemies, there's much about these skeletal beings that the game leaves out and is worth investigating. So today we'll be taking a look at five things you (probably) didn't know about the draugr of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

      I know!! Why kill the Red Eagle?? Should one also kill and vilify William Wallace too??
      Another example lately of this mindless scripting of lore, and having the Dragonborn's only way to interact is by killing the central character. The Pale Lady, minding her own business, just wants her sword back after it was stolen. A Kajiit, desperate to return it, is hunted by a bandit chief who wants the sword for himself. The Kajiit gets killed in the process.
      Along comes the Dragonborn, kills the Pale Lady and takes her sword - just because he can, or just because he can AND the game tells him to "Banish Pale Lady".
      To quote Mr. Potato head: "How about we don't?? Has everybody taken stupid pills?"
      These days I don't just blindly do what the game tells me to. For that reason Anise and Moira are still alive - and a LOT of Hold Guards are dead.

Maybe a chief historian in charge of a major rectory who actually has quests and possibly even has a small part in the main quest so the player has to run across you at some point. If they did that then I would hope they get you to supply the voice and give you lines like "Hey, how's it going?" and "Here's an interesting fact about you probably didn't know." Miraak's tomb sure did have a claw wall. But since he betrayed the dragons and killed quite a few of them, its likely that after he was defeated by Vahlok the Jailer, the claw to the door was likely found, and either buried far away, or thrown into the sea to add insult to injury. And since Miraak was mind-controlling people and had them rebuilding his temple, he had his thralls break the door down.

    • @robertashmore1942

      I thought similar except the dragon loyalists likely simply smashed the door apart when laying seige to Miraak's temple, which also accounts for how damaged the place is.

    When you travel to Dead Men's Respite for the Bard's College to collect the lost Verse of Svaknir's part in the Poetic Edda, you have to kill the undead King Olaf, who has the shape of a Draugr now. And, when facing him to kill him, you can clearly see, that Olaf One-Eye has two beautiful sky-blue eyes - I mean - TWO eyes. So why Olaf One-Eye????

    Embalming tools are often laying about in those tombs. I wonder if these tools are what are necessary to create the Draugr. They don't appear to be your atypical "zombie". Their bodies seem more purposefully mummified, and at the same time, not completely dried out. After all, some can use the voice. This also explains who has been keeping the fires going in the tombs.

    Theory on the difference between Solstheim and Skyrim draugr: the 'servant' draugr came first, created by the Dragon Cult. The Skaal found the practice abominable, given their respect for nature and natural processes. Then, when Miraak and Vahlok the Jailer had their titanic battle that supposedly broke Solstheim off from the mainland, the Skaal tribesmen took shelter from the carnage in the tombs. Some of the crypts ended up buried due to all the landscape-altering fighting, and the now trapped Skaal resorted to cannibalism. This is why the All-Maker made them into draugr: he turned them into the same abominations they had once feared.

  • @kasandorayuki5215
    @kasandorayuki5215 4 года назад +24

    Although I like the idea of Miraak getting frustrated and annoyed at a Claw door, I can't see why he'd damage it and at least not make anyone repair it. My theory is that someone else destroyed it - perhaps Vahlok the Jailor when he and Miraak fought. After all, the Black Book that houses Miraak is located further inside, and why would he want a defense mechanism that protects that to be destroyed - even if by his own hand?
    Also, we know that the Temple was Miraak's right? So, why wouldn't he have the Claw that goes with the door? I can understand him destroying the door if he didn't have the matching claw, but he should have it and know how the door works; right?

  • @Kensen_Ackles
    @Kensen_Ackles 4 года назад +14

    Regarding the Nords all being sealed alive in the tombs, it seems likely that this was the punishment meted out to the supporters of Miraak after he lost to the Guardian. Also, because his temple was laid siege to, it seems just as likely that Vahlok the Jailor was the one who Shouted down the dragon claw door Miraak thougbt to protect himself behind.

    Draugr is an old scandinavian word for "drowned" it also became synonymus with the "Undead" "Vengefull dead" and "Dishonored Dead" in scandinavian mythos.
    I suspect the reason for why both the Skyrim and Skaal are both called Draugr is most likely because they are "The Dishonorable Dead" among the Skaal due to cannibalism, and in Skyrim because during and after the revolt against the dragons i doubt most nords looked favorably upon the dragon cult.

      I would have wanted more varied undead then what we now get, like normal zombies like in Oblivion, it all feels copied after the first 4 draugr tombs

    • @Robitch1
      @Robitch1 4 года назад

      Are you so sure about that? I think I jump scare the draugr. When they see me rollin round the corner they take flight in the other direction. Just imagine a silent tank rollin up on you and in a second you hear a Fus Ro Dah! And ur gone.

    • @frosksdeadteeth5163

      You only get a jump scare if you're aware. It's like your doorbell only startles you when you're expecting someone. The trick in movies is to give you so many false scares before the real one that you hit the ceiling.

      @@frosksdeadteeth5163 That absolutely does not work on somebody with PTSD and Exaggerated Startle Response. Fortunately, few things startle me in Skyrim but 99% of the time, my mom will come into the room, simply talking, and it spooks me. If your method were applied to me, I'd become so incredibly stressed out that I might break down. For every one, though, well... maybe it'll work for them.

    i always just thought the Draugr were desd Nordic warriors buried in these dungeons/catacombs as they are buried with their ancient weapons. They are in the church catacombs too in Whiterun. They come to life whenever they detect an intruder

    Why is the Red Eagle buried in Nordic armor? Should he have looked more like a forsworn? I assume he was either the leader of the original forsworn or the "sympathizers" who found him took up his beliefs and practices. Not saying that there even is an original forsworn but, every briarheart since Red Eagle has been forsworn (or at least the only ones we see in skyrim are). Idk. Maybe I'm reading too much into this or possibly not reading enough in game lore. Anyway, thanks Nate. Another awesome vid.

    • @Alizudo
      @Alizudo 4 года назад

      It's just a game limitation. Realistically, Red Eagle should actually just be in a loincloth since he was naked when he died.
      But his NPC is just a Deathlord with a name; don't think about the armor too deeply.
