What we see in Oblivion is pretty much a formal institution. But in Winterhold we get a collection of mages that pretty much do what they want and only stick together to get some level of official recognition. One guy is tinkering around with Keening and manages to soul trap himself. There is the atronarch forge underneath. One guy turned himself into a huge glowing orb. Then the glove which summons a daedra pirate. The master level conjuration quest involves repeatedly summoning a daedra and bullying it into stealing a sigil stone from Molag Bal. You know, the stones that open Oblivion gates. The restoration quest involves going to the orb guy, getting naked, and getting attacked buy ghosts and destruction magic. Which implies that dying there is a completely expected outcome. The alteration quest involves taking scales from a dragon. Those things that have been dead for millennia. Oh, and the first quest after joining involves taking students into some old ruin to plunder it. Luckily the new apprentice is someone who actually tries to save things, and so they become arch mage within a week or so.

It's like real life really. Modern day college apprentices aren't up to the standards of apprentices from the good old days. The apprentices who accompanied Savos Aren on their expedition into Labrynthian were much more accomplished. Then again, Savos was the only apprentice to survive that adventure.
It seems like with the reputation magic has among the Nords (as dangerous and untrustworthy), that a very particular type of person would sign up, and kind of invite a cavalier attitude towards the dangers of magic they’d been fearmongered about their whole lives
I found the one with the fire cloak recently. Burned to a crisp, surrounded by fire and dead animals. The skill book still in their inventory. The spell works fine. Been using it for a while. At least it works better than J'zargo's scrolls.

The Great Collapse was in 4E 122. The game takes place in 4E 201. That was almost 80 years ago. Why every nord talks about it just having happened last Wednesday of last year? Know what was 80 years ago in our world? WWII. How many real people are still all bųtthurt about that and skulk about it in recent terms? Remembered, sure, but we've moved on from that. The 4 generations of nords in Winterhold haven't even torn the houses down or rebuilt the homes in 80 years.
Best College ever. No loans to take out to pay for tuition and leave years upon years until old age and working a minimum wage job to pay off the debt.
These are great. I started my first playthrough a couple weeks ago, I just got level 80 and that big b*stard in dark armor came and challenged me in front of everyone in town. I am avoiding him for now though =)
I wonder how the college compares to the typical Mages Guilds. I assume the Guilds weren't in Skyrim due to similar things already existing; the college and the mages guild or the companions and the fighters guild. I would imagine the Mages Guilds are much less lethal than the College of Winterhold. I also wonder how "cursed" this college was before the Great Collapse.
Based only on my Morrowind gameplay experience, not much better, but you have to keep in mind that the Mages Guild isn't a school. It's a professional organization; you take on paid jobs to rise in rank, and in turn gain access to guild services such as skill training and learning spells, with more access at higher ranks. It's also more political than the college, and some of the jobs involve secretly sabotaging or stealing from other members, and you have to pay dues to reach certain ranks. They don't send you to as many actual dungeons or experiment on you though, so there's that at least.
No wonder all you have to do to get into the College is show some basic magic, they need to take in everyone they can get given the incredibly low student mortality rate - not even taking into account the remote location or lack of local interest from Skyrim’s Nords in magic as of late. Even the Red Army wasn’t scraping the barrel for new recruits this much. 😂
