Iirc, to this day nobody is quite certain how or why it even happens, though it’s theorized to be a result of eye injuries from early childhood. Historically, almost all cultures have held strong superstitions, usually regarding it as a mark of some kind of supernatural blessing... or curse... So, consider yourself very, very, very lucky... or very, very, very unlucky... 😅

      "To this day, no one knows how or why...."
      This isn't a fairytale.
      We know both how, and why it can happen, and MANY reasons for it.
      It can be a benign genetic anomaly. It can be caused by a good handful of diseases, right from infancy.
      It can be caused by eye injury, internal bleeding of the eyeball, surgery on the eye, etc. It can be caused by tumors.. And another good handful of diseases and conditions that can be acquired later in life.
      As for the HOW. Either due to your genetics, disease, or some sort of trauma, your melanin production, distribution, and concentration is altered and affected, leading to a different color.
      I think you could even easily explain this to a small child, without resorting to "we have no clue! Might as well be magic"

      i'll be honest with you, the college sadly was the MOST disappointing area in the game
      [next to Alduin's final fight vanilla version]
      you arrived talked to some strangers, you take ONE SINGLE PATHETIC "lesson" in destruction school IF YOU CALL IT EVEN A LESSON to begin with it! you go to a silly dungeon, then do few quests here and there, the cliched bad guys is cliched, you get your elder scroll, and become the archmage .... for some reason this feels really wrong, and someone makes fun of the destruction school, and ... poof! the college is done!
      couldn't we take more classes to feel like we are REALLY IN A COLLEGE OF MAGIC? i am talking about Harry potter's Hogwarts level of classes, quests, and professors!
      why only destruction school? why not take classes in other schools as well?
      not everyone likes destruction! hell my favorite school is conjuration! i love to summon stuff and daedra!
      very short quest line very plain fellow students who in a day and a night become your followers because you are the NEWBIE ARCHMAGE! and you do not get any requests for doing any research as an archmage or do any master level quests for being a real archmage either!
      skyrim's wizardry role playing is extremely lacking i am not talking about combat i'm talking about trying to role play as an apprentice mage that studies and graduated from the college then went out and continued the research becoming independent hyper mage, then discovers that the mage is the dragonborn. sheeesh!

    The college is not thousands of years old, it was formed in the mid to late second era. It's about 1000-1100 years old, according to lore in Skyrim. Mirabelle or her voice actor is mistaken. Probably the former actually believes the propaganda of the first era, when in fact the paperwork and Serana confirm it's age to be the second era.
    The Mages Guild was not formed until the second era as well, and is older by several hundred years and existed in Winterhold prior to the construction of the college.

    The winterhold college just like most things related to mages in skyrim is really boring.....i mean seriously it feels like Bethesda hates mages because not only is it really hard to play mages at hard dificulties but leveling up destruction magic is extremely slow and painfully boring, Might be just me tought.

      It kind of makes sense, skyrim is all about cool nordic shit. Every other elder scrolls game is pretty big on magic

    • @martijnbakker1277
      @martijnbakker1277 6 лет назад +25

      That's true. It's just a shame that almost every nord is portrayed as a racist, a big scaredy cat, a nitwit or a combination of these.
      I just wanna see a nord rip his shirt of and fight a cavebear untill it runs off, and that with his bare fists to impress the lasses and get some free mugs of mead from the lads.
      I did see a werewolf and a snowbear fight in a ravine close to winterhold, their roars echoing off the walls and onto the sea of ghosts. Truly an epic battle to behold. Maybe I was so impressed because I never expected to witness it.
      To my surprise the snowbear won, and it wasn't even close.
      But the college is hyped up immensely. You can ask any tavern owner, the wizards of the jarl and even some shopkeepers where you can learn more about magic. They all tell you to go to the college of winterhold.
      But in the end I've learned nothing from the college. I couldn't even level my skills at the trainers, because by the time I made it to the college I was already high level in most skills, or had to level other skills first in order to train them higher. Something I was hoping and expecting to do at, well, the college.
      And then I became archmage. I get that they can't teach me anything, apparently, so then I must be the best wizard, but honestly, I'm a two handed, heavy armour wearing brute with restoration magic on the side. Can't even conjure that nice guard a warm bed.

      Yeah, As most as i love Bethesda i feel like their biggest issue is that they waste too much on everything and very rarely focus on just one thing and that hurts their games very hard sometimes i mean look at fallout 4, i don't hate it as much as those angry fallout new vegas fanboys but you can see that Bethesda is not really doing all that well under Todd Howard's management.

    • @Gameworks1407
      @Gameworks1407 6 лет назад +6

      shitty surplus not really. I mean Oblivion wasn't big on magic either. Morrowind was the only game where playing a pure mage was kinda worth it. When you compare mages to some of it's contemporaries or even combat in general, Skyrim and Oblivion were confusing and bad.

    The reason for the levelling glitch with the magic anomalies is due to the variable type used to store levels, which would appear to be an unsigned short with a max value of 65,535. If this number is surpassed (as is the case by the player levelling up by 1), the value resets to 0 which Skyrim's engine won't allow so it pushes it up to the next valid value which is 1.

    Sure it was far from perfect, but I'll tell you one thing, it set the entire tone on my first-ever playthrough of Skryim. Being sequestered in a cozy, cool-looking fortress inside with free lodging and a couple fun characters, rife with materials and resources and all the skill masters in one place where elsewhere you'd be lucky to find _any_ magical things or people . . . I liked it. Plus with a couple mods here and there implementing more NPC's and the Winterhold guards, that place is a literal fortress, and great for early-game safety.

    They gotta do a damn Winterhold DLC for Skyrim or ESO!! It's all cool we got the fancy Psijic island and Altmer Nazis, but the real magic of Tamriel in my opinion was in Winterhold and it's story. The Bosmer can keep their tree songs, Khajit their moon magic, and Argonian Hist magic... I want the great college! We get Dominion Nazi college, and isolationist scholars instead. The Dunmer have their trinity and Telvanni mages have their nostalgia, cool, but in ESO us Bretons don't really have a cooler place to go than Winterhold, considering it accepts everyone... or hey you could start giving us actual landmarks like the Direnni tower or some of the others, that would be cool.
