You are right. While I tried my best to keep phase correct (visually) when tracking perhaps the mics being too close caused the issue. I will correct it before printing to tape for sure! Thank you
Noticed this too. If you use linear phase EQ you should be able to match the phase of the close mics with the overhead by time shifting the tracks and line them up visually. If you think IIR EQ is necessary, it has to be done by ear and re-tuned if you change EQ settings. Mainly those 48db/oct HPF shifts the phase around the center frequency drastically. Good video and good sound overall however :)
This was incredible to watch. Very free and intuitive approach, but you very clearly know your stuff. Also, love the approach to your video production as well.
Appreciate that. I learned the less I “try” the better results. Just being easy going about mixing rather than old me always comparing to other mixes and beating myself down when it didn’t stand up to it.
Great video! Very solid mixing fundamentals. Since you mentioned you were looking for a compressor, my go-to for drums is the Kramer PIE Compressor from Waves, which is a model of the PYE compressors they had at Olympic Studios, and even using it very subtly, it really brings the drums forward in the mix. I also second the person who mentioned Kolin by Analog Obsession, a model of a Collins 26U-1 vari-mu, and which is great in parallel. Aside from that, Arturia makes really good compressors (their 1176 is fantastic, as is the 33609, and their dbx emulation is so smooth-I love it on overheads). The Softube Tube-Tech compressor is great. The bx_townhouse is good SSL bus compressor. The Lindell SBC is a very solid API compressor. The DPR-402 (also by Waves) is good for when you wanna mess things up.

Just discovered this video. I like the way you dedicate yourself to the tiny nuances and the goal to create something unique. As a plugin dev I'm soaking up ideas like yours like a sponge. Thanks for sharing! Where would I find the samples of this pack again?
Wow! The interest in this video continues to surprise me. I over think much and was on the verge of deleting it forever before I posted it haha. Grateful to of helped you. This pack is now on vvundertone.com it is called iridescent drums. In fact you have inspired me to put it in the description! TY!
Really glad I found your video! I'm mixing a retro funk/hip-hop song I wrote and produced and I'm glad to know I'm on the right track with my drum tracks signal chain - just missing the radiator. Can't wait to give that and the "sauce track" a try :) thanks for the in-depth walk-through!
yoo thanks for the vid :) as for compressors plugins on drums: i love the "kolin" compressor by analog obsession on 50% wet parallel, i think it sounds really sweet (and its free)- the vulf compressor has much more "sound", pretty intense and aggressive but i love it- very unique.
TY for the recs, I always wanted that vulf one. Mainly because I hear its semi modeled from the Roland sampler compressor which I use in sp555 form and absolutely love. But can't argue with free!
Great video dude, no compression on drums takes guts lol! Try MJUC if you dont love digital comps, it's a classic, 3 models in one, great on busses, and cheap! Kiive also makes very good compressors but pricey. Don't sleep on Analog Obsession either, huge catalog 100% free, tons of vintage goodness
I’ve seen your reels on instagram so I subbed once you came up on RUclips. Awesome to see you switch from monitors to headphones and make decisions in real time. Very helpful!
Sounds like a modern drum kit with distortion. I would personally leave a lot more mid range, perhaps ease up on the distortion, and experiment with some SLOW compressors - thats all they really had back in the day. Some altec style compression on the buss with a gooey slow release
Like I said, this is just a starting point. Before I send it thru a mixer, DBX compression and tape machine its more likely to get a second & third listen over. I like to take a break for a few weeks and come back fresh to get clarity. But yes one day I would love to get my hands on a ALTEC comp! the DREAM!
Amazing video. Saturation is the key of every good sound, I'm pretty sure. I've been using Tape by Softube for a while now, it has a truly wide range of very consistent color options and I love it.
The stock overdrive plugin in logic is perfect, roll off the highs and experiment with drive setting… for snares I like it hot…. It really softens the transients and fattens it up….
TY! I do have a video of doing the actual process (its thumbnail says "Mixing to Tape" I believe, but not explaining the gear needed. I will add that to the list!
I would love to get a vid on how you got the other drum recordings that clean - u mentioned u treated ur room but I’m very curious how you acchieved it 😊
I wish I would have documented that day. What I did was go to my storage where I have all my photo equipment, including several backdrop drapes. I took my mattress and leaned it against the window and piled several drapes in front. I stapled pillows along every corner of each wall. Put down several carpets, and a c-stand hung with piles of blankets over it. Basically anything I could possibly find near me that was soft. But then stacking the soft items so they became thick as possible. Then I used Soyuz 013 microphones with hypercardioid microphone capsules attached to greatly reduce any extra room tone and solely focus on what I pointed them at.

I just think in the digital world some things don't quite stack up what they are modeled after. When I use plugin compression, something feels cartoonish and plastic about them.
