    Andrew Scheps, love that he shares his thought process of why he's doing what he does. And it always makes perfect sense. The Pultec on the mix bus with boosts at 100hz and 10k makes perfect sense. If you've been mixing for any length of time, you would get how much sense this makes.. Awesome video!!! Alway love Andrew Scheps mixing vids.🙂👍👍👍

  • @RemyRAD
    @RemyRAD Год назад

    Yeah I remember those Lang, EQ's. Back in 1973. When I worked for Flight Three Recordings Inc., in Baltimore. Original home of George Massenburg. We both started at the same place a couple years apart. We were both mentored by the same guy. A genius electrical engineer formerly with Bell Laboratories. And the father of Vertical Hold for television. Not in any history books. Thomas M. Bray. And I still have his custom, 4 input, vacuum tube, stereo microphone mixer. That doesn't sound like other tube stuff. It has a beautiful stark open quality to it. Way more open sounding than my pair of Altec Lansing 1567 A's. Which sound dark in comparison. Even though they both have the same, TELEFUNKEN tubes in them. But sound way different.
    So, those Lang EQ's. Were, a lot like a, PULTEC. But transistorized and much cooler operating. They were clean and robust. And they were smooth sounding. And I haven't touched one since 1973. Much less seen one since? But here they are! I remember those!
    I'm missing my old life.. I didn't want to retire. I was forced into retirement. This sucks!
    I love you Andrew!

    How is Andrew Schepps hitting the red lights if the whole thing is supposed to be -6db to be mastered?

      as long as you dont hit the limiter/clipper on your master you can throw any gain plugin and just lower the gain to a lever you a comfortable with and keep mixing, further adjusting the gain to the level you need. just think about it that way and dont restrict yourself with these "rules"

    • @АлександрХаныгин-ъ7ш
      @АлександрХаныгин-ъ7ш 3 года назад +1

      The math in modern daw has 64 bit floating point operations. With real numbers. You can safely exceed the 0 level by at least 100 dB and then lower it back and it will not be clipped. There will be clipping only when converting to 16 or 24 bit integer format. Simply lower the loud mix in the final to a level not exceeding 0db. And there is no need to move its individual tracks separately. Of course check your daw against this.

    How does he manage to lengthen the kick and snare with those limiter settings? Wouldn't you normally have a slower release rather than a very quick one to achieve that?

    • @lucascisneros8147
      @lucascisneros8147 4 года назад +3

      daveezraloops if you have a fast attack the limiter grabs the transients and flattens it, giving the impression of the transient being longer, whereas in slow attack the transient stays untouched

    • @iamchillytoy
      @iamchillytoy 4 года назад +5

      Slower release would mean you keep compressing after the signal has dropped below the threshold, thus reducing the tail/length of the kick and snare. A faster release setting means you compress the peak but let the tail through, which preserves the low end bloom after the hit, thus lengthening the drums. I use a similar approach on my kick bus (-5dB reduction, 25ms ish attack, 50 to 60ms release and wet/dry mix at 50%, really lengthens the sound while also tightening the attack). I'm by no means an expert, maybe someone from mix the masters can complete/correct my answer!

      Thanks for the replies! Raoul Tchoï: yes, that makes sense. I can hear the extra sustain when Andrew engages the limiter, it just seemed counterintuitive to me. I'll spend more time experimenting. Best Wishes

    Plugins are not equalizers, or compressors, or reverb, etc. they are all software that re-write "ceros and ones" because, in the box (computer) all is digital, just "0 and 1", so what the plugin that you think is compressing the signal is actually re-writing the file, that consist only in a large succession of ceros and ones.

      @santosateos1452 3 года назад

      @@user-qj2cq4dv3k When they came out in the 90s they were designed to "sound" like hardware because the engineers were used to the way they work, but today young generation have never work with real LA2As or SSLs so that emulation have no use to them, that is why companies like Izotope are coming with these new intelligent plugins and in the coming years this is going to change the game completely.
