    --------
In this clip, Michael Jai White shared his thoughts on Quentin Tarantino recently addressing the controversial scene in "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood," where Brad Pitt's character beats up Bruce Lee. Michael Jai White then revealed that he had heard that Tarantino was going to depict either Bruce Lee or Jim Brown in the scene, and Michael added that he would've also been upset if Jim Brown was beat up in the movie. Michael Jai White then explained that the scene "speaks to white supremacy," as he feels that it shows a white character beating up an Asian man, and he added that Tarantino is using his creative licenses with the scene. He added that his scene in "Kill Bill" involved him being beat up by Bill, played by the late actor David Carradine, to make the main character look better. To hear more, including Michael Jai White's thoughts on Tarantino's character saying the n-word in "Pulp Fiction," hit the above clip.

I met this man at a comic con in Michigan. My son wanted to see him because he was in spawn. This man was incredibly nice. He seemed genuinely happy to be there and came from around the table to take a pic with my son. His attitude was great and I have always remembered meeting him and the experience of his great attitude.

All due respect to Tarantino, but he was wrong when he stated that Bruce disliked the stuntmen. He mentioned he got that info from a book he read on Bruce Lee, but the author of that very book said that Tarantino was incorrect about what he said. Bruce never disrespected the stuntmen on the set. Ever. He would disrespect the producers and directors, but never the talent.

My issue was Tarantino tried to play it off like it was a spoof and he was having fun with it. But then on the other hand he says he didn’t make it up and Bruce Lee was really arrogant like that. So then it becomes an agenda because he didn’t like Bruce Lee and wanted to make fun of him. And the guy isn’t here to defend himself so I felt like it lacked class.
Ultimately the guy did it to create controversy and get people to watch the movie and obviously to some extent it actually worked.

An interview with several people who worked with Bruce spoke on how humble and kind he was. Being a martial artist at the level he was at, there would have been a hint of arrogance. Many top martial artists carry an air of arrogant confidence. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t nice people.

I believe at the core of Shannon Lee's dissatisfaction with the portrayal of her father is - she's keenly aware for an Asian actor to elevate himself to the status her father did in that era, he had to work ten times as hard as his white counterparts. He had to be f*cking EXTRAORDINARY. All that crap he navigated through, the obstacles he overcame, the injustices suffered (being passed over for the lead in the 'Kung Fu' series), and to thrive with all that pitted against him, he had to have been an exceptional human being. Then to have his character so minimized, his legacy so reduced in 'Once Upon a Time...,' that's too hard a jagged pill to swallow. So I get that.

    • @strafer8764

Nobody back then was taking white people doing martial arts on film seriously. If you were Asian it was immediately more believable to people. Racism actually works in people’s favor sometimes. Chuck was never as famous yet he had career actually demonstrating his skills in competition. So the racism excuse doesn’t work well. Every martial arts movie in the 70s and early 80s was dominated by Asians.

What most media outlets ain't making clear is that most Bruce Lee fan's had a much bigger problem with the way Bruce was portrayed ignorantly and arrogantly talking shit about Muhammad Ali, an idol of his, and "..that white kickboxing asshole.." Joe Lewis, a real life student and friend of Bruce's. Bruce would never had said such things about other respected fighters, especially in unfamiliar company, and definitely not about those 2 men.
These things rubbed us the wrong way a fuckload of a lot more than that inaccurately portrayed fight scene.

They have a friendly but competitive fight where Gene beats him using Judo. They become close friends, Gene trains Bruce in judo and the grappling he learned is incorporated into Jet Kune Do by Bruce. We have to remember there's many aspects of a situation going on. Bruce was a short skinny chinese guy in a white male American dominated industry where foreigners (especially Chinese guys) weren't seen as marketable. Chinese men were also seen as weird and even effeminate.
It's possible that the movie (and also even in real life) Bruce Lee had to overcompensate for his lack of notoriety and size by showing off a cocky and mysterious aura to command respect from those he worked with. That's why you see Bruce wearing the shades and douchey gloves and talking about how he could easily "cripple" Ali. Bruce seemed to be nice to fellow chinese workers but was more brutal on American stuntmen. It's a cutthroat industry. It mirrored DiCaprio's character. Most audiences wouldn't get that since we're wayyyy outside the Hollywood industry (and especially not from that era back then). We also deify Bruce Lee which clouds what goes on behind the scenes.

Bruce wouldn't have FOUGHT a guy who had a chance to beat him.
People talk so much shit about the "legend of Bruce Lee" without ever realizing that they've never actually seen him fight. That's a fact.
Seeing Bruce Lee in movies is NOT a real fight.
Seeing Bruce Lee doing "DEMOS" is NOT a real fight.
Snatching pebbles from hands and doing a one inch punch DEMO against men who are stationary and not resisting is NOT REAL FIGHTING.
Millions of people put their belief in Hollywood and movies.
For years these same people were claiming that Jean Claude Van Damme was one of the greatest MARTIAL ARTISTS/FIGHTERS in the world.
      Same with Segal.

The image of a white aging chain-smoking stunt double kicking the ass of the much more agile and prime Bruce Lee, or the big black muscle that was Jim Brown is bullshit at its core. I took that whole movie to be a big "what if" fairytale, to fill the void of QT's childhood movie experience (that he want us to see acknowledge).
To Mike's point, I think Quentin might have been working off that insecurity. Throughout most of the 70's, 80's and 90's the running trope was "don't fuck with Black guys and Asian guys" (until UFC got on the map). So yeah, being a poor awkward White kid (hence, seeing White guys who were badasses that he looked up to) he got to watch all his favorite White action stars have compete with newer action stars and did want them to get lost. I'll admit, I looked up Hal Needham, and Richard Dalton (already knew about Burt Reynolds)....which I think was the point.
Throughout pop culture there has been that insecurity. POC come with unique creativity, and then White audiences feel salty about having to make room in their minds for other types of representation, and try to find the White equivalent in those genres so they can flock to them instead.
Chuck Norris was dope, but wasn't as flashy, which is what people wanted to see. All them ninja and kung fu movies took the stage, although Cynthia Rothrock and all of them were fucking dope.

What action stars did whites compete against? Bruce lee? Yes there were blaxploitation action stars but they weren't on the level of white ones at all. Later there was Jackie chan and jet li, bruce Lee's son in the crow and then Wesley Snipes, then Michael Jai white to some degree but he's not on the level of Snipes, seagall, van Damme, Stallone, Arnold, etc

Even the main character of Kung Fu the series was actually white. Wanting to see white people rap or be good boxers is a different thing. Elvis was heavily influenced by blk musicians and yes white ppl prefer watching someone who looks like then perform something even if it's a rip off of some blk persons work

That running trope was simply steeped in racism and segregation. Fear of the unknown.
The mind is the most dangerous tool of aggression/violence.
Quentin Tarantino gives me bad vibes. He always has. I can't imagine spending 20 minutes with him. I imagine I'd be punching his face in for 15. He's a 0 on the charisma scale.

You're doing way too much for something to be your opinion yet you're trying to speak on behalf of Quentin like you know him personally relax. You are probably most likely a regular person because I guarantee youu wouldn't catch Tarantino on this thread because he understands it's someone else perspective on the main video we all came for.

Of course it was a fairytale, the movie is called " Once Upon a time in Hollywood." That's how most fairytale s start off.
