The movie's semantic is not for literally true, but figurative real instead. Every thing happens to real people wasn't historically accurate, whereas every representative of certain people was in the way it was. That's why the movie's name and why it is in an artistic fashion. Because it is a movie about a tragic history and it has to be performed in a Quentin's entertaining way. Therefore when Bruce Lee meets a stuntman played by Brad Pit, Bruce Lee has to lose because it is not historically accurate and Brad's stuntman win because stuntmen are always the true badass. Quentin respects his own movie language, therefore the scene has to go that way, and he did.
Tarantino is a XENOPHOBE with an American superiority complex mixed in, from my brief analysis, that is what's going on. Him saying Bruce Lee said this and that about the "American" stuntmen when coupled together with his campaign to get rid of non-American actors pretty much exposes what's going on in his head, The dude can't take a foreigner like Bruce Lee (he was born in California but raised in Hong Kong) outshining real 'MERICANS and looked to destroy his image. This mirrors the struggle of Bruce Lee when he came to America, dealing with American nativist like Tarantino and seemingly, Samuel L. It just so happens that Tarantino's favorite black person, Sam L, seems to share this Xenophobia with Tarantino, remember when Sam L was going after them black British actors a lil while back. This might be why Sam L and Tarantino are such buddies, Sam L was either always this way or Samuel L adopted it from Tarantino. lol
We ALL Know those masters aren't worth anything they claim to be, too many videos of them getting embarrassed right here on RUclips. 99.999999% of the so-called masters cannot fight. Too many videos PROVE that.
There's an interview with Jackie Chan where he says Bruce Lee hit him by accident and stopped filming to apologize to him personally. Tarantino is full of it.
@@macrognsqd He checked on him to make sure he was okay, that is what shows his character. In movies, It is normal to keep filming even when someone got hit, specially in chinese movies. Jackie chan himself kept many shots running where he injured himself.
he accepts no wrong doing because it's his art...he must be staunch he is not going to backtrack on anything he has envisioned and created that would be weak and confused
I'm just a white guy from the UK who only knows about Bruce from books, magazine's,, watching interviews and documentaries. However, what keeps coming across is what a great person he was who thought a great deal about other people and who wanted to make us better people.
Reading watching interviews and documentaries shows you're FOCUSED and not likely prone to misinformation. Example: One comment said, " Bruce never taught martial arts as an adult" I replied, watch a documentary or read up! Anyway as far as race, I'm Filipino and do Kali. It was the "white guys" that sat me down and went over the drills. The others were more into favoritism and Social Issues. I too had to read and watch interviews.
I'm pretty sure he cheated on his wife 🤔 If that's true i'm not saying he was the worst guy in history not at all but he definitely wasn't a great guy 🤷🏻♀️ Personally I think it's a good thing to bring up any faults a famous person has because it makes them look like what they are/were.. human and not some perfect inhuman god.
Yeah I agree with you. I got DVD 📀 here I does watch sometimes, he never tried to be top guy on the list. He was a good fighter though and not only teach but learn also from his students and friends. He was totally different from the other guys these days.
I know it's a fictional movie, but the problem is that Tarantino is actually convinced that Bruce acted that way in real life, which is a false representation...
Quentin said "Bruce didn't respect American stunt men and was always hitting them to make the fights look real". Half true. Here is the truth. Bruce had no problem with the American stunt men. People get tagged or hit during scenes. Not out of disrespect but to make the hits look real. They were not full force hits. It was the way they filmed in Hong Kong. I saw in interview with Cynthia Rothrock, and she spoke about the differences between American and Hong Kong stunt work. It really came down to different styles of stunt work. Nothing to do with not respecting American stunt men.
Jackie Chan also said that in Hong Kong they just used to actually hit the stunt men, it happened to Jackie, it happened to Bruce, and it was just a part of the Hong Kong martial arts culture. Jackie even spoke about how he had to train his own US stuntmen again to bring them up to standard
The first time I heard about this was back in 1995, when I saw a behind the scenes look at the movie Mortal Kombat. In it, Robin Shou, who played Liu Kang, asked Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa, who played Shang Tsung, if he could hit him with controlled force during their fight scene, to make a specific punch look better on film. Cary agreed, and Robin hit him while they filmed their fight scene. After I heard that, I began to understand that this was a thing in Hong Kong cinema, and that made me respect the actors and stunt men even more, because they were willing to take hits for the benefit of the film.
The physical contact is similar to when one is training with a partner at the dojo/gym LIGHT contact. You make contact with your partner to simulate that your hit did land, but you hold back the follow through so as to cause no pain or bruising.
Huh?? Brad Pitt DID go along with the "original script". Why do you think there is controversy at all with what Tarantino did? The fact that Brad Pitt was friends with Brandon Lee shows that he is actually worse than Tarantino!
@@NomadFlow the video states clearly that the scene was originally intended to play out differently. so the original script differed from what we got on screen.
Usually people who act arrogantly - nobody wants to work with them. He wouldn't have so many friends and people come to his funeral if he was arrogant like that.
Jackie Chan, himself, said Bruce was VERY concious of the idea of hitting someone and didn't like to do it, said Bruce was very apologetic about it. Tarentino picks and chooses what he pays attention to. Tarentino has also invested SO much time in being this hardcore Hollywood rebel, it's tough for him to back off. He's always had this "I'll do it my way" attitude and his head has gotten bigger than his actual fame and skill. nuff said?
@@harlem4693 he may have been that way on the set of the Green Hornet, but I don't believe there was ever any malicious intent on Bruces' part at all. His lack of experience in 'selling' a punch or kick is why Gene Labell was brought in. He put Bruce in his place, and to his credit, Bruce learned from the experience. I highly doubt that Bruce ever set out to deliberately hurt someone on any of his subsequent pictures, although injuries did undoubtedly occur. It's just part and parcel of the profession stunt guys find themselves in. Bruce was very highly thought of by the extras on his movies, opting to have his meals with them and train them, rather than act the big star.
No one can make us believe that Bruce Lee was anything like he was portrayed in that movie. It was shameful, and it pissed me off as a lifelong fan of Bruce. I'm a 74 year old Black woman from Chicago. I remember the impact Bruce had on the world of every color. It was amazing just how fast we fell in love with not just the martial artist but the man himself. Tarantino 's movie disrespected Bruce and should be addressed. We love you still, Bruce, even after all these years. That will NEVER change. ❤❤
True Amen. Bruce wasn't perfect personally, but his positive qualities remain inspirational to this day. The more I learn about the real guy, the more I respect him, flaws and all.
@@rdred8693 Tarantino movie is the kinda of movie you watch for the satire. He portraited all his fetishism in his movie so we can't says much about him besides the fact he was a pervert creep and a great director. This movie is pure comedy an alternative world in any possible means from the real events. The only period bruce lee was maybe an asshole was in his debuts, pretty much when he was a teenager, inexperienced in martial art, I believe Tarantino's "research" come from that. But in this scene he was an adult accomplished master, and even the supposed victim of his tyranny how was the real Cliff says that's bullshit😂. I don't even know how someone is able to watch a Tarantino's movie and say "facts🤓"
"No one can make us believe that Bruce Lee was anything like he was portrayed in that movie." Actually, his friends have been saying he was cocky all along. And, this quote could apply to any of Bruce's movies.
In my opinion, Quentin Tarantino is a great filmmaker, but Quentin is no martial artist, has never met or sparred with Bruce Lee, and should not comment on Bruce's abilities with no qualifications to judge.
It makes me wonder if that was Mr. Tarantino's agenda? Perhaps he portrayed Bruce Lee like that to get a rise to promote his film. Anyone who's did even a little reading on the life of Bruce Lee knows. Still, honestly I didn't like his portrayal. It was disappointing to see my hero portrayed the way he was in that film. I was looking forward to his part in the film since I read that Bruce was a good friend of the actress and showed regret that he couldn't be there to protect her. In any case, Tarantino is a great film maker but this one isn't one I'd watch again.
@Piyesis71 that could be true. In this social mass media age, a strong argument can be made that is no longer any such thing as career-ending bad publicity. Or at least, that the standard for what qualifies as "career-ending bad publicity" has been raised into the clouds. 🤣🤣🤣

All I have to say regarding Quentin Tarantino's ridiculous, untrue and very disrespectful portrayal of Bruce Lee in his film "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is that people will never forget Bruce Lee, even after the best of Quentin Tarantino's films are long forgotten. Although Quentin Tarantino has his own unique and remarkable style of filmmaking (and has marked Cinematic History in his own right), he would never have been able to make Kill Bill 1+2 without the strong influence of Hong Kong and Japanese Cinema to Western audiences, of which Bruce Lee was a major part. So, instead of making a mockery of a martial genius icon like Bruce Lee, perhaps Tarantino should be making a "hommage" to him. Although a Filmmaker should have the right to freely express himself within his work, Shannon Lee is absolutely right in defending Bruce's image, not only as his daughter, but also on behalf of the millions of Bruce Lee fans and martial artists throughout the World. Mr. Tarantino, I certainly hope that your next film is better, and definitely more respectful of other Cinematic icons that are eternal, timeless, and much bigger than yourself.....RESPECT!
He likes Bruce it was just cliff was a stunt man a Bruce was known for being a bully to stunt men. So the scene is somewhat accurate at least with how Bruce treats certain people
Bruce Lee wasn't just an asshole... He's Inspired millions of people from beyond the grave. He wasn't just some arrogant karate star! He was a perfectionist and a pioneer! Think about the times he lived in. Couldn't have been easy being a Chinese immigrant turned mega movie superstar! Especially in Hollywood during the 60s. He was confident and capable! Plus he was very philosophical ! Bruce is and always will be a Legend
I'm half Chinese on my dad's side. He used to tell me stories about how his school bus driver when he was a kid used to ridicule him for being Chinese.
@simonpathomas4421 I'm sorry to hear that. I was in high school in the 1990s I never got teased for being Chinese at that time I was bullied and regularly physically assaulted over my physical disability my leg was amputated when I was eight due to cancer. It wasn't until Donald Trump ran for office that I began to receive hate for my Chinese heritage. I grew up thinking with the exception of a corrupt police force and others that the US was past that barbaric behavior. I was so wrong.

Bruce Lee was full of himself that’s just a fact. He would actually hit stunt men when doing fight choreography, many people have said this. And Quentin never attacked his reputation. Bruce Lee was at the top of the game of course he was smug and full of himself
@@common7909 To be fair, that part is due to how he didn't understand film making. He didn't fully understand how you don't actually need to hit, or make contact with the other actors/stunt men in order to have a fighting scene. You just need to change the camera shooting angle in order to make it look like someone getting hit when the person is far from physical contact. This was what caused issues with Bruce Lee and the movie makers (producers and the lot). He thought they were pulling bs on his specific expertise part. But he later did had to admit he didn't know much about film making, the camera angle stuff. Other than that, Bruce Lee was quite humble and modest actually. Tarantino did him dirty on that. I reckon his view is biased as he's a movie maker.
That says a lot how people find an idol and elevate it into status of legend without critically questioning whether or not it makes sense. People never stop proving how stupid and gullible they are.
From the ghettos - Bruce Lee is a hero to the world! Sad part about Quentin making this statement/proof appears to defame Bruce. True bios contain stories from ALL sides. This was biased rubbish. Is that the term used in Engand😂?! Tarantino are ya jealous? Wanna rewrite the history or a man loved by all races?
I think Tarantino really screwed up on his representation of Bruce Lee. I'd wish he was smart enough to realize that and man enough to apologize for it.
Bruce Lee gets so much respect that I pretty much agree with the "suck a dick" response. The world should be able to handle this ONE less-than-godly portrayal like adults. I thought it was meant to be a comedic twist on our expectations until the QT interviews, so yeah he might just be bad at research. But it should be noted that this youtube video is making it sound like QT is saying "suck a dick" to members of the Lee family when he's specifically making an exception for them.
“ Look at my hand… That’s a Chinese hand. He’d kill me.!” Bruce Lee had nothing but respect for Muhammad Ali! He studied him intently… To the point of watching ALI’s ‘s boxing matches in a mirror so his left lead would look like a right hand forward stance (which Bruce used)
To be fair, Ali said (I saw the interview) "A boxer wouldn't stand a chance against a top martial artist." See my comment above, where heavyweight Joey Orbillo opines that Ali would lose to Lee in a real fight. I always wonder about that Robert Clouse book ... people on the set said Clouse disrespected the martial artists. Robert Wall said he went to Clouse's hotel room and slapped him. Look at Pat Burleson's interviews. At 230 lbs. he said Bruce threw him around with one arm. Look at just for play Joe Lewis grappled Ali to the ground. Or Ali's '[match' with the Japanese wrestler ... Ali's legs were so injured by kicks, he had to spend time in the hospital. If Ali couldn't avoid these 'sport' kicks, how could he avoid a real Bruce Lee kick? As Bruce said to Kareem Abdul Jabbar, "I could break your leg, and there's nothing you can do about it." (Kareem grabbed Bruce in a hug, "I was only joking, Bruce!"
I am far from a Bruce Lee fanboy but I have seen ple ty of interviews with him and read stuff he said. For what a huge figure he was he never comes off arrogant. He had a lot of ideas and was happy to talk about them when everybody, or a lot of people, wanted to listen. But that is a very natural reaction to suddenly being famous as a young person
@@Wordsareprayers Quentin Tarantino lampoons several real life people in some of his movies, Adolf Hitler, for example in Inglorious Bastards, this movie is no different. It wasn't a documentary about Bruce Lee and you absolutely have to know that, as well as how this movie ends versus what really happened to the Sharon Tate and the Manson Family as well?
@@Wordsareprayers having a fight to a draw with a fictional character who is suppose to be a former Green beret that specialized in close quarters combat is disrespectful? yes he was based on some amalgam of real stuntmen but the character written was superior to the stuntmen he was inspired by. Tarantino's only mistake was how he responded, he should have just said it was imaginary fight with a fictional character and leave it at that.
It's even simpler than that; Tarantino's entire filmography is to shock people with the unexpected and outlandish; it's what made him famous; it's his signature. He just found out the hard way you don't disparage Bruce Lee.
I remember my ex army dad used to wake me up in the morning to join him for a run and exercise n I’d hate every second of it. After I watched the way of the dragon, my father didn’t have to tell me to wake up early or exercise it became a natural part of life. And this is true to many of the living martial arts legends today. He inspired so many of them like this from the childhood. His best contribution to the world is that he made physical exercise n martial arts look so cool that people would engage in them despite the discipline n labour it requires. Imagine the world of martial arts today without this phenomenon named Bruce Lee! 🎉🤘❤️❤️
I remember watching karate movies with my little brother on the weekends and discovering Bruce Lee. We didn’t know how famous he was. We didn’t know about his popularity. We just fell in love with them. We watched those karate movies thinking Bruce Lee was alive. We didn’t know he had died 10 years prior. When I discovered it, I cried like a baby. If you don’t think Bruce encountered bias and racism at that time, you’re nuts. To take his memory and his image, and humiliate him at the hands of, what could be, some of the people he suffered those bias from, and some of those struggles. This hurts as a fan.
They were not karate movies they were kung fu movies Jesus Christ kung fu kung fu kung fu not karate it was only one karate dude back then and it was Sonny Chiba.. 😂
Not karate. Gung Fu (Kung Fu as westerners know it). He mainly studied Wing Chun as a young man and went on to create Jeet Kune Do (Way Of The Intercepting Fist).
I've always wondered why Tarantino never portrayed Chuck Norris in Once Upon A Time IN Hollywood, because like Bruce, Norris also worked with Sharon Tate in The Wrecking Crew.
For such a big thinker, this is a SUPER weird bias for Tarantino. With his lack of research, availability of opposing viewpoints, and refusal to apologize for his false assumptions i have to question his judgement outright altogether. Fantastic video. Great perspective.
THere are plenty of supposedly intelligent, smart and or educated people who are extremely biased and emotional thinkers on some subjects. You would be surprised how many are like that. They might be a genius in some subjects and areas but a total biased idiot and ignorant in other areas. It is good to never assume someone is more intelligent then they are. You will be disappointed
That because QT has already been bit by Wke Hollywood....my guess is this was his way of Pandering to the puppet masters. An attack on a strong masculine Icon like Bruce Lee must have gained him some points.
You're making the assumption that this video is perfectly accurate. As if it's not possible that the creator of this video is biased in another direction as well. And also, wtf would anyone apologize for making a movie that people choose to watch. No one has to believe what's in the movie. It's fiction.
@@ClassicFilmEnthusiast oh yeah I definitely put some trust in the creator. I did a little bit of check verification while I was watching and what he was saying appeared to be true. I didn't get into verifying all the stuff cause that's ridiculous. But if something he developed in his narrative is contradicted in the future I'll be much more wary of carrying this narrative ahead. The essence of documentaries is trusting the creator to give objective data through a subjective lens to save us all the time of having to do the research ourselves. If I didn't trust documentarians because I couldn't verify 100% of the data it would be a waste of time to even watch.
I am old enough and have followed the career of Bruce Lee that he struck me as a humble guy, the way typical martial artists are. I mean if you know you can take life with just your bare hands and you are a human being, it humbles you. I know because my karate teacher also taught the secret service and was a pastor and was very humble. I have never liked Quentin Tarantino movies, they are incoherent. On the positive side of things, I am excited to know that Shannon Lee exists and is out there. It would be an honor to meet a descendant of Bruce Lee.
In a biography, written by a friend of Bruce Lee; he briefly described what Bruce's friendship meant. He was very loyal. If you were sick, he would visit, until you were back on your feet. if you were down on the dumps he was there to cheer you up That always stuck with me.
Agreed 👍 these kung fooy fan boys are so sad 😢 It's just a movie.... relax I train in martial arts and also coach kids and women in self defense. Martial arts is very useful but that doesn't mean the martial arts are some sacred religion that is absolved from anecdotes or charicature.
You are correct!! But then you have the nut riders of Bruce Lee that think he was the “greatest” which isn’t and will never be true. He just brought martial arts to the forefront for the world to see
@ObjectiveEthics You're missing the whole point. It's not about the martial arts is about the portrayal of an actual person and that wrong portrayal can give a false narrative on how someone is in real life. Unfortunately for many people films are things that become the one way people learn things. WWII happens because Hitler put out mass propaganda that the Jewish people are the reason for all of Germany suffering and losing the war and spreads his ideals that only white men and women with blue eyes are the right race and proceeds to send Germany on a road of world domination and mass genocide of the Jewish people. Media is very important the way people are portrayed in media are very important. Understanding the effects of what is shown and what is not shown is very important.
All of Bruce's students said he was untouchable, and all except one of them were golden gloves boxers, Judo champions, wrestlers, and Kenpo black belts when they met him.
Jim Kelly made that up. He only met Bruce on the set of ETD and never saw Bruce fight anyone, his claims dont fit the timelines of history. if you listen to how vague his comments are its telling...cant describe any details and cant name anyone.
Bruce Lee said that he picked up a lot of grappling technique from Gene LeBell. That sounds like a pretty friendly relationship one has with a colleague.
By the time they met, Bruce had trained with many grapplers, from his time in Seattle (19 or so) to his time in Hollywood. Many judo men were, for example impressed that Bruce even knew the names of the Japanese techniques. Of course, it's well known that much of Lee's training with his students was: "Come at me like a boxer, or a grappler, etc."
5:04 Gene Lebell did an interview after that movie came out, trying to shed some light on the truth. Gene said that he unexpectedly put Bruce into a firemans carry or something like that, just playing around, but afterwards, Gene and Bruce ended up training together to work on Bruce's grappling skills because Gene knew Bruce was lacking in that. So, according to Gene LeBell, that scene was very loosely based on the real, playful encounter between Gene and Bruce.
There have been friends of Gene who said he told a lot of untrue stories. For example, Gene said that "Bruce's school in Chinatown had tatami mats and smelled of incense." The real students there said there were no such mats or incense. Also, that Gene and Bruce didn't meet until many episodes after the first Green Hornet, and by that timeline, Gene couldn't have been called in to "teach the new kid some manners." Anyway, please see my comment above on Hayward Nishioka. He was younger than Bruce, and therefore much younger than LaBell ... likely Nishioka was better than Gene in sparring. Nishioka couldn't touch Bruce. I doubt if LaBell could touch Bruce, either. Gene said in Matt Polly email: Bruce was the best of his era. @@JubeiKibagamiFez
@@jakemay637 I know that Gene embellished his stories, but he said he caught Bruce by surprise, but then he ended up teaching Bruce grappling and ground fighting. I don't think there was any animosity between Bruce and Gene at all.

Let’s not forget that Tarantino loves writing the n-word into his movies and often gives himself a reason to say it. Dude’s got some latent racist tendencies, but they’re the kind generally overlooked as reserved for “people from a certain era.” Thing is, though: he isn’t. I think dude’s just got some grievances he gets to air out because he makes interesting movies. He gets a pass, but should he really?
I think this scene is messed up because it tarnishes the image of a dead man, a legend that impacted the world of martial arts, helped gave birth to MMA and combat sport as we know it and had a huge influence on the movie industry as well. But Tarantino is definitely not a racist. He used the n-word in Pulp Fiction when he talked to Jules Winnfield’s friend Jimmie Dimmick, a caricature of a character. Then in Django which quiet literally takes place during black slavery. It is a bit silly to try to use that to label Tarantino as a “racist”. He has been casting black actors since the beginning of his career and maintains close friendships with all his cast members. Lastly, I find it a tad self-entitled to think we choose to give people a “pass” or not. If you enjoy a certain director, watch his work. If not, don’t. This whole cancel culture mind set is toxic, is it not? Not everything is racist just because we don’t like someone’s art.
I think you all don't get to choose how an artist creates. Bruce Lee was treated like every other person would . Quentin Tarantino makes great films that don't become the fake polished junk that consistently gets hustled
@@lightup6751you assume racism begins and ends with using the word in public (which, by the way, Tarantino has until he got shut down). You also assume that “liking” black people means you can’t be racist. Lots of slave owners “liked” their slaves. Lots of folk during Jim Crow “liked” black folk as long as they didn’t have to live/eat/go to school/share equality with them. And there are tons of examples of people that “liked” the black parent of their child, while hating their mixed-race offspring. So, yes, you’re giving him a pass, probably because it’s easiest for you and lets you feel comfortable consuming his work.

Great video! Thanks for making this. Tarantino claims to be such a Hollywood historian yet was a million miles off target with this scene. I'm sure if asked he'll say he's not racist but he certainly has some bias against Bruce Lee. He joins all the people who treated Bruce Lee, an American, like an "uppity" immigrant - even now in death.
What a horrible homage to a legend that died young, who inspired millions of men and opened the door to kung fu actors. And the fact that Quentin said this was based on research makes it even worse. Why would you portray him like that and even claim it was based on true stories? Even Brad was like "nah".
Admittedly, I was one of the few that said it was a dream sequence, because that's what it had appeared to be. In context of his interview with Joe Rogan and the book though, it seems intentional to create some controversey to get people to buy into what essentially was hear-say. The fight isn't what I thought silly though, it was the dialogue prior to it. Respect for bringing clarity to this debate. It's pretty conclusive that Tarantino was looking to knock him down a peg for who knows what reason. Jealousy? Envy? Hate for his ongoing celebrated status? Or to make money? Only he knows the truth.
Bruce Lee worked his @ss of to get to the height he achieved both as a martial artist and a film maker/movie star. For someone to come along and totally trash his character, his brilliance is to not appreciate the impact he made.
The young brother sparring with Ho Chung -Tao at 12:29 his name is Carl Scott. From what I seen from him in those movies with Billy Chong ( I don't know his original name, He goes by Willy Dozan now) He was pretty damn good. Could you do a video about Carl Scott? A little more about his life and career in movies? To me he's a guy that doesn't get enough shine. I love your channel and keep up the good work!👍
I believe tarantino wants to rewrite history in such a way that Bruce Lee is remembered as cartoon charecter and later on re-invented as white person out of spite , I read four pages of tarantinos outbiography and needed a shower all that ego stroking self engrandizing shows the lack charecter in him .
My friend who was a car-buff said that car he was thrown against would never crumple like it did, as the sheet-metal was very thick and heavy on the real cars back then. Those doors on the Tarantino car must have been made of tin-foil for the scene.
It's been mentioned more than once that Bruce struggled pulling his punches and kicks during enter the dragon because he was so used to full contact work with the Chinese stuntmen he had worked with in his earlier movies
To this day stunt performers will tell the hero actor to actually hit them when they're rolling cameras. They are tough folks and they want it to look good. They don't make a big deal out of it, it's why they get up in the morning.
And that is the thing right there. It would make sense that in the early beginnings of Bruce working with American stuntmen that they would be hit. And with him being so fast...someone was going to be hit. That in no way means/equates to Bruce Lee having no respect for them. It's still the same way today that in China and it's safe to say in general in Asian martial arts films that they are done full contact. Jackie Chan's style of film fighting is similar, but to give the appearance of full contact and it can be difficult for Western stuntmen to adapt to that kind of fighting.
It can be said that at least in his Chinese movies, Bruce was very good to his stuntmen. He insisted on having meals with them, and that he not be given special treatment. When he was in Hollywood, Stirling Silliphant hired him as fight coordinator for one of his films in the South (I think Tennessee)... and Bruce "proved" himself to the "two, tough big Caucasian cats" (Silliphant) "after Bruce kicked them into the pool, they came up Christians, and from that time on, they would've killed for him." @@ghost7524
Tarantino says "It's just the fairytale story." So in Tarantino's fairytale, the most famous Asian Martial Artist and Movie Star of all time gets treated like a joke, whereas the white stunt guy that killed his wife helps saves the day. Got it...
i love how the only people who made it about race are those overly offended by bruce lees portrayal. also conveniently forgetting all the white people Tarantino has mocked including himself.
Yup disrespecting one person doesn't equal being bigoted even if its unwarranted, also he has made films before where he portrays US Antibellum Culture incredibly negatively even in the Hateful Eight where the Black Protagonist is depicted as kind of cruel and sleazy its justified against the people he was being cruel at as being far worse than him especially with what they did to his people and himself.@@ryanwood6754
I was practicing Tae Kwon Do when Bruce was still alive. This version of him is a grotesque parody. Tarantino just lost whatever small amount of respect I had left for him as a man.
Naw, Lee was an arrogant person. And Gene Lebell picked him up and carried him around the studio while he was screaming "put me down". If Tarantino put that in the movie his fans would have all had a hemorrhage
@@sargerules20 Yeah, people think with their emotions instead of logic. You are no different. You love Lee therefore he was the baddest man on the planet, at 135 pounds lol. I never saw the movie because I heard it's depiction of Bruce Lee was bad, then I looked up the scene and immediately checked out when the actor portraying Bruce had a physique nothing like him, moved nothing like him, and ultimately didn't even look like him. Going back in time I never enjoyed Kill Bill, I thought it was cool that they used the jumpsuit from Game of Death but still something about it really turned me off. Now I realise it was actually Quentin trying to associate that iconic jump suit with a different movie for a different generation. To perhaps tarnish or even diminish the spotlight on Bruce that it was he who wore it first (and better). Now after watching this video that might actually be true, and it's not a secret that Quentin is obsessed with race, so that might come into play also. The thing that makes this worse is that people who have never seen Bruce Lee in footage or any of his movies might see Once Upon A Time In Hollywood and form an opinion on him based on that, which is terrible. I remember the backlash Jason Scott Lee received for Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story, but in my opinion he did fantastic, his tribute to Bruce's intensity and graceful movement is an achievement all by itself. Nobody else has come close since. Especially not the actor in this scene in mention. I'm glad people clapped back, it shows that his legacy is still as important now as it ever was, thanks for the video.
Numerous close friends, including celebrities described Lee as a fierce and confident person, but also a humble and kind person who treated everyone fairly. I haven't heard anything that remotely resembles Tarantino's portrayal of him. I suppose there's no law in mocking anyone but certain things are just poor taste and character.
Quentin is good at making the bad and low down people look cool. The good and kind he spits on them with artistic strokes to make them look like uninteresting geeks. He strips out the very essence of love and respect from life and replaces it with degradation humiliation and perversion but does it in a way which one thinks that to dislike it would be close minded. It’s all part of the program to dumb us up and keep us asleep.
Idolizing is akin to sleeping. Look at how many do this today with celebrity politicians world wide. There are many incredible people who's achievements will be forgotten in time by the masses, yet I cannot think of one great achievement from Bruce Lee. His ego was on full display in the Ip Man films and that's coming from Chinese directors. He fit in well with Hollywood as someone that was arrogant--not at all a bad person but full of himself. As someone else pointed out Muhammad Ali was similarly a big talker but he at least proved himself, until he got put in his place by Frazier anyway.
@@thisguy3500you are down right ignorant. The Ip Man films were not based on Bruce Lee and you are confusing arrogance with seriousness, humbleness and honor.

Jim Brown was supposed to be the actor Cliff fought then he switched it to Bruce Lee. So he wanted to have one of the icons beat up. He knows that if he had used an icon like John Wayne he would have had a problem. If you pay attention to the movie he slid in a lot. He definitely has a problem.
There's two statues of Bruce Lee out there in the world that will still be standing when we all die. Last time i checked, Quentin doesnt have any statues dedicated to his impact on humanity.
Again the “Bruce Lee” in his FICTIONAL film where a washed up actor and a stunt man who is also an amalgam of multiple people takes out the Manson family, you want to call for “respect” for “Bruce?” The “Bruce” in QTs film was not the real Bruce Lee. What is so hard to understand about that? Should the lady whose car that the FAKE stuntman Brad Pitt put Bruce into be upset that QT didn’t portray her with the proper respect? Were there any female Kiwi stunt wranglers in the 60s in Hollywood? Or maybe it was a FICTIONAL THING?? We all love Bruce Lee. I was a kid when he passed. I was also a karate student at the YMCA and a Saturday double feature “Chop Socky” movie kid. If I thought for one second that QT meant ill to Mr. Lee I would be with you and his family, but you are all wrong. A film full of fakes and you expect Bruce Lee’s part to be real? I know you won’t read this and will continue to feel the way you do so I am sorry.
I am old enough to have read the interview with Lee that contains the Mohammad Ali quote that Tarentino misrepresented. I think it was in Black Belt or one of those mags and Lee NEVER said he could cripple The Champ. In response to a question about Ali, what Lee he said was something like 'Ali's fist is as big as my head. I would have to go for his knees.' Now that's not the exact quotes, it's been 45 years or so, but that's pretty close. It was basically a joke. Lee had nothing but respect for The Champ. He would watch films of Ali's fights over and over to study his movements and technique, some of which he would incorporate into his own fighting style. What Tarentino did was utter disrespect and his response to 'suck my....' shows was a classless douche he really is. But, hey, he's done some great films. If not the Lee scene "Once Upon A Time..." would be a fave.
Super insightful. I love the addition to perspectives and comedy. I thought it was going to be another remastered video but… I see you had more in store for us. Awesome
Bruce Lee in his real comment about Ali is correct. If he can use his feet, Ali might be screwed (and I think that would be the case since Ali had no idea on how to deal with kicks, even to his legs - source: watch the fight in Japan with Inoki - who had sloppy kicks on the ground.) Where Ali's legs were messed up from the sloppy kicks, let alone kicks and side kicks to the knee by Bruce Lee... But his comment about fist size and size in general is that: limit his tools with rules in the boxing ring and he's likely not going to do well against Ali based on size/weight alone... Nothing wrong with Bruce's assessment of the situation. It's actually logical and accurate.
Thanks for the video. When I saw the movie, I thought that it was simply an alternate reality, since the ending of the story is a fantasy. I was not that upset by the scene. I think Tarantino really shot himself in the foot by doubling down on sounding like he had based it on some "truth" though. No one would disrespect Ali, so I'm not sure what Tarantino was thinking, other than wanting to be a troll for Bruce Lee fans.
On point! The movie is an alternate reality, so anything goes! It’s like the multiverse or the What If comics! What if Bruce was a douche? What if a stuntman beat him? What if that stuntman went on to stop the Manson family murders? What if someone hadn’t turned in front of James Dean while he was driving 100 mph? Would Paul Newman have had a career if not? It’s just an amusing mental exercise, not to be confused with reality. People need to lighten up, because Tarantino was just having fun. Unfortunately, he underestimated the Lee fan base, and his ego won’t let him just say “I’M SORRY!”
Tony Jaa doing the same with stunt man for a real fight for the shoot but is not personal with stunt guys also is part of their work so I don't understand Tarantino's point....
That was really well done. You kept things strait forward, and honest. And I totally agree with Shannon. That jerk owes her an apology. His actions further shows the arrogance of Hollywood.
You realize you're telling someone to apologize for having an opinion. QT could turn it around and say you have to apologize for assuming you know everything about him.
I totally agree with your breakdown... I am a huge Green Hornet fan and I did read that they ask Bruce to slow down because the stuntmen couldn't keep up with his strikes .. the biggest thing in that scene where he is thrown against the car is THAT CAR WAS BEAUTIFUL!!! I had 4 of them 65, 66, 67, and my fav 69.. all 4 door suicide doors.. made me mad that they wrecked it in this movie.....LOL.. thank you for sharing this video... Sub'd and Liked..
Bruce Lee was and is the mma guy. Even my grandmother loved Bruce Lee's movies... Bruce Lee is like Tupac and Bob Marley iconic in his expertise marital art... they could never destroy his character or legacy...
You're damn right, which is why I think Shannon (though I do agree with her opinions on it) didn't need to go as far as convincing the CCP to ban the film; the only person who comes off looking bad because of it is Tarantino himself. He's made a total tit of himself in my opinion, even though he's still my second favorite film maker of all time.
Bruce Lee never said that Muhammad Ali would kill him & I've watched his interviews in referenced to Ali bigger hands. He's never talked like this, & as for fighting in the streets he said that he believed in fighting dirty. This statement was by someone who used the book Making of Enter The Dragon by Robert Clouse who directed the movie. However, in IMDB it doesn't mention him writing the book Making of Enter The Dragon. Edit Overall your video is good & you've done amazing research.
Tarentino made a fool out of himself! Bruce Lee is a Legend and his actions speaks for itself. Bruce's mind is just as brilliant as his physical accomplishments.💥💪....... 😎

This might be why Sam L and Tarantino are such buddies, Sam L was either always this way or Samuel L adopted it from Tarantino. lol

I saw in interview with Cynthia Rothrock, and she spoke about the differences between American and Hong Kong stunt work.
It really came down to different styles of stunt work. Nothing to do with not respecting American stunt men.
This.

Bruce Lee was full of himself that’s just a fact. He would actually hit stunt men when doing fight choreography, many people have said this. And Quentin never attacked his reputation. Bruce Lee was at the top of the game of course he was smug and full of himself
@@common7909
To be fair, that part is due to how he didn't understand film making.

I think Tarantino really screwed up on his representation of Bruce Lee. I'd wish he was smart enough to realize that and man enough to apologize for it.
But he’s not man enough. Just a scrub
He’d kill me.!”
Bruce Lee had nothing but respect for Muhammad Ali!

After I watched the way of the dragon, my father didn’t have to tell me to wake up early or exercise it became a natural part of life. And this is true to many of the living martial arts legends today. He inspired so many of them like this from the childhood.

Bruce was so fast and powerful that when he had to pull his punches it sometimes caused him injuries.
@@trevorberridge6079 that's what I heard also.
Tarantino says "It's just the fairytale story." So in Tarantino's fairytale, the most famous Asian Martial Artist and Movie Star of all time gets treated like a joke, whereas the white stunt guy that killed his wife helps saves the day. Got it...
Yes, why not?
There should be a QT film on John Wilkes Booth where he saves the day. @@ilfirinms
i love how the only people who made it about race are those overly offended by bruce lees portrayal. also conveniently forgetting all the white people Tarantino has mocked including himself.
I think i that the Bruce Lee character in Tarantino”s movie esembles Tarantino himself rather than Bruce Leer
@@johnreidy2804ill call bullshit
@@sargerules20 Yeah, people think with their emotions instead of logic. You are no different. You love Lee therefore he was the baddest man on the planet, at 135 pounds lol. Even though he only had one fight to his credit.
And it wasn't Lebell. Lebell just toyed with Lee. Lee fought Wong Jack Man to a draw according to a book written by one of the 11 witnesses. The Book is called "showdown in Oakland."
Give it a read if you actually want the truth about Lee. In the meantime if you think he fought other street fights show me the proof Sport :-)
Tarantino is not equipped to handle historical material in general, so I don't think anyone takes him all that seriously.
@@thisguy3500there is plenty of proof where Bruce had proved himself.

I really appreciate you covering this. I really didn’t appreciate what Tarantino did with Bruce Lee. It was very disgraceful. Shannon and her family have every right to be upset by it. I would be upset too if somebody portrayed my parents in a way that wasn’t true to who they were.
Quentin insulted everyone who enjoys Bruce's work. I haven't seen the movie. I've seen every other Tarantino film.
Yeah, hearing about that scene soured my need to watch that movie. I've seen every other film too.
let's be honest Quentins a very overrated director anyway
the guy hasn't made a decent movie since Jackie brown
@@err4071 I enjoy his work...for the most part. Sometimes his attempts to go over the top turn out cheesy like the final scenes of Django Unchained. However telling us all to suck a dick has lost him any respect I ever had for him

A legitimate argument about what, Tarantino being a very overrated director
or Tarantino's depiction of Bruce Lee etc etc.
And he never will ! A legend only in his own mind !
The only thing I remember from Kill Bill is the name of the movie.
If he was a director in Bruce Lee's time, he would've been begging Bruce Lee to do a movie
Doubt. Chopsocky films were popular and Tarantino doesn't ride the waves of mediocrity. Kill Bill for example...
Again the “Bruce Lee” in his FICTIONAL film where a washed up actor and a stunt man who is also an amalgam of multiple people takes out the Manson family, you want to call for “respect” for “Bruce?”
The “Bruce” in QTs film was not the real Bruce Lee.
Once upon a time in hollywood was just average
I think Quinton was just upset because Bruces worst movie is still better then kill bill
Well researched and thoughtful video.
Tarantino being a complete and utter duck ;-)
He'll never change.
Oh wow, I’ve never knew. Thank you for sharing this. I agree, that fight scene does come across as disrespectful to the late Bruce Lee.
Awesome
lol that audio clip is killing me!!! too funny
Unfortunately, he underestimated the Lee fan base, and his ego won’t let him just say “I’M SORRY!”
nobody should be off limits for mockery. People just soft these days and want any excuse to throw racism out there
Tony Jaa doing the same with stunt man for a real fight for the shoot but is not personal with stunt guys also is part of their work so I don't understand Tarantino's point....
Funny, even in death, Bruce Lee still gets racism from Hollywood. All these years later, and it has not changed. Yet his legacy lives on.
True
I totally agree with your breakdown... I am a huge Green Hornet fan and I did read that they ask Bruce to slow down because the stuntmen couldn't keep up with his strikes .. the biggest thing in that scene where he is thrown against the car is THAT CAR WAS BEAUTIFUL!!! I had 4 of them 65, 66, 67, and my fav 69.. all 4 door suicide doors.. made me mad that they wrecked it in this movie.....LOL.. thank you for sharing this video... Sub'd and Liked..
Probably a kit car, or they switched out an original door with its "stunt double."
