I'm strugging to transition from business/finance to IT, from choosing what area to focus, and after watching some of your videos I think I have the answer and how to start. Thank you so much.
excited to hear about your progress and journey!
What helped you decide which area to go into
Why did you decided to change?
Governance, risk, and compliance would be a good area to look at.
You need to be able to work with the business and IT. Being able to convert "we could get hacked" into financial (and other) impact's that executive management and the board understands as an example.
You need a high level conceptual understanding of the tech side as a minimum and be able to lean on others as required. You do ultimately need to have a solid technical understanding but GRC is an area you can start in from a business background.
Excellent info, I need that!

Hello! I am currently a masters of accounting student and graduate this May. I start my IT audit career at an accounting firm this July. I was planning on starting an online degree in either network engineering or cloud computing from WGU. I plan on taking the CISA exam this summer and work in IT audit for 1-2 years to get experience in the field and transition over to network engineering or cloud computing. If I am interested in cyber security which degree would you recommend and which has the highest career growth potential? Thank you for another banger video, new sub to the channel!
hey Jovani,
getting an IT Audit at an accounting firm is an excellent start!!
If you’re interested in cyber security then I see no reason for u to do either cloud or network engineering as those are different fielda on their own. Yes you will need understanding of networking and cloud to a certain extent but u dont need degrees in them
I recommend u do a masters of cyber security from WGU, that will be the best compliment to your career

@@yablochko3472 you can pick either, depending on your starting point. The NYU courses can help give you a broad introduction to security, but since you have software development experience, you can probably just jump straight into certifications and follow whatever specialisation you end up choosing
Can you say if the trifecta of certs (A+, Network+, Security+) is sufficient to land a good role? Or should I go for the CySA+? Btw, I'm really benefiting from your vids. Thank you.

I’m 34, I work in technical support for a tech company. A sort of tier 2 support above the regular support where we specialise in one area. I’ve no computer science background and can’t code (I studied accounting and finance as a degree and didn’t like it which is why I’ve worked in tech support for 7 years). So I fear my background may be quite weak but I’m very interested in CS because it seems similar to some extent in how it’s chaos, and every problem can be quite different and requires troubleshooting based off your own learned knowledge. So there’s some skills there but would you think I’d be wasting my time trying to move into CS given my age and background as there is a lot of push for younger people to get into this and so a lot more competition against people who have a more computer science background. Thanks for your videos. They really are helpful!

@@UnixGuy I got inspired by all your advice and decided to start with CC from ISC2. I am doing well and will take the exam very soon. This is where I need some advice. I am still in uni and have a few more years left to go, thus I am looking for an entry level job in CyberSec that will allow me to work remotely and will not require me to be glued to the screen 100% of the work time so that I may still be able to attend lectures. I’ve watched quite a few of your videos and you often mention finding a path in cybersecurity that you enjoy, but is there an ideal path to take? To generate that well rounded experience, is there a recommendation on where to start first before working your way up or finalizing on a career path within cybersecurity?
No there is no such thing as 'ideal' path. All paths can be good, if you work hard and study and get experience. One path is not better than the other. Pick a specialty and go deep in it, that's the answer. There is no 'secret path' or secret formula, you gotta pick something and get REALLY good at it. That's all.
@@UnixGuy I wasn’t looking for some secret shortcut to success answer. A lot of jobs have career progression and sometimes it can be pretty linear. I was just curious if there was something that can be seen as either beginner friendly or foundational that can be branched out from once you find your niche. Although it sounds like as a beginner, taking the shotgun approach with applications and working with anyone that’s willing to give you a shot is the move.
@@Tyrantt__ hey mate, I think you have the right mindset and approach.
The problem with beginner without experience is that it’s challenging to get your first job, so in a sense we can’t be picky unfortunately. the best thing you can do is to build out your skills through certifications (regardless of which job you get), this way you can be ready to switch once the right opportunity come along
thank you

they’re not a threat, just another tool in our arsenal
