I did free labs, google cybersecurity certification, lots of self education from free resources like this amazing channel. Hello, can you do a video on how to create a home lab with the intent to showcase or start your cybersecurity journey? What’s your advice on which devices to use?
Hugely underrated channel. I really wish everyone trying to break in to cyber could hear your video advice. Awesome video! -from a SOC analyst with no degree 🙂
@OG_Anime_ sure! The first cybersecurity certifications I got were Security+ and Blue Team Level 1. I should note that prior to those, I had A+ and Network+, and 2 years of Tier 1 IT support experience. While these things definitely helped in the grand scheme of things, it's not necessary to land a SOC Analyst role, although I believe it would make you stand out more. Network+ is far more important than A+ in security. I also want to point out the importance of home-labbing, doing online labs, and documenting what you learn on a blog or LinkedIn page so that hiring managers can see it. I was able to have nearly an entire page of cybersecurity experience without ever having worked in a position where 'security' was in my title due to building up cybersecurity-related homelab projects, and also online training like Blue Team Labs Online and TryHackMe.
I'm not even applying for a year. I'm doing OK in desktop support and want next years bonus... a year of studying a few certs then I'm ready. I can't go in too entry level. My google cert and next security+ i dont feel is enough for me so i have a few intermediate to do. Htb and more hands on
Thanks, it’s a great video of the day. Still learning from free resources and saving for your GRC course. Truly appreciate your advices for newbies like me in this field 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for your clarification and for the encouragement ,i made this mistakes. i just finished my Google cybersecurity certificate and planning to start applying for jobs, though so far like you said many companies wants candidates to have at least minimum 2+ years experience.
I'm changing my career to big diffidence from transportation to tech industry, specifically cybersecurity! I have completed my Google Cybersecurity certification already and applying to jobs, and keeping learn more in deep cybersecurity field
I have yet to see a job posting where they aren't asking for an associate, bachelor's, or a masters degree. Where are these roles that don't ask or require a degree? What are the chances of landing a job where they ask for a degree but you don't have it?
Wow number 1 and number 3 so true. Got two certs and do not feel like it is enough...got them last year and have yet to apply for anything also have degree in IT and 4 years general IT experience. Anxiety really sucks.
I got a genuine question I’m getting my A+ cert should I apply for desk position now? Then work on getting my other certs? Just to get my foot in the door
With 8 years of experience as a backend developer, is it possible for me to switch to cybersecurity? If so, which path should I choose, and what certifications are recommended?
hey, I don’t want you to memorise what to write, instead I want you to be able to write them yourself! Here’s an example: ruclips.net/video/LFlsDm8w36A/видео.html
Have been in IT for around 5 years and always in infrastructure project management. I am starting my part time cyber degree this year. Hopefully I could learn something with the degree and get a cyber job. Looking at certificates too like Sec+, CEH, CND, CHFI and more. 😅
You know my problem is that I don't live in a tech city, so I would need a remote job or hybrid job at least and I don't see a lot of job options remotely. About 2 to 3 jobs in Midland, Texas 😑 if even that.
I swear this guy helped me found a job. Even thoguh its not cybersecurity role, its a system engineer role but I feel like after 2 years experience I should be able to have enought expierence and will get a cyber security job.

Hi, I'm looking at learning cyber security, I have no experience in IT, what courses should I do and where do I get the certificates to prove I've done a course
Should I be concerned about ethical hacking job opportunities? For months now there have only been 1 or 2 penetration testing job offers online for the big Canadian city I live in, and always for the same 2 companies. I'm not trying to find a penetration testing job now, I just want to know if the career is actually sufficiently in demand

What if you have a bachelor's in computer software engineering, 3 internship experience, 4 certs (Security+, A+ (both) and az900) and still cannot get a Cybersecurity job. I also practice on my HomeLab. Anything I should change or do.
I have 15 years experience in Industrial Controls Systems and looking to get into ICS/OT Network Security. I have the CCNA, Security+ certs. To specialize in this would you recommend GIAC certs in this area or ISA IEC certs.
@@TheHarrisal21 they have a few, start with the most basic. Honestly, I would caution against ‘specialising in ICS/OT’ , the number of opportunities are limited so its better to combine it with something else
@@UnixGuy Honestly I was going that route because it closely relates to what I've been doing and didn't want to start at the bottom all over again with a huge paycut. But I do intend to attend sans institute.
Currently studying for the A+ cert, then planning to work in IT while doing a bachelor in Cyber Security once finished with the cert. I initially planned to do that because I have no experience whatsoever and wanted to learn the fundamentals (just like you said: « to better understand the system that you are securing ») to then start applying for Cyber Security jobs. Are you suggesting that someone in my situation should apply to lev 1 Cyber Security jobs (SOC analyst for example) right away instead of going through IT jobs? I know that this is what you are saying in your videos (I’ve watched a lot of them) but don’t you think that learning the basics of IT and computation gives you important knowledge that will help in your Cyber Security carreer?
Hi UnixGuy. I come from life sciences background (B. Tech Biotechnology). Though I come from life sciences background, I've always loved working with my computer. In my bachelor's degree, I took 4 papers from IT department (Front end and Back end fundamentals, Python programming, Cyber Security, Cyber Forensics). It's been 2 years since my graduation and I wanted to pursue a career in Cyber Security. I've completed ISC2 CC and I'm currently doing Google Cybersecurity certification. During my college, I've done some certifications from Cisco. In recent times, I started doubting myself whether I've chosen the right career or not. I'm feeling so low for the past days and I don't know what to do. Can you give me some advice?
There is no right or wrong paths my friend. The only option you have is to continue to study cyber security after work and try to land a job - if you like it great, continue, if not, then you can go back to your life science jobs I dont see any other options.
UnixGuy, i hope one day you write a book so I can come to a signing and get a copy signed by you. You give me hope that I can get into this field. Thank you! Sincerely, a very worn out warehouse worker, truck driver and heavy equipment operator lol
I'm doing my masters in Cybersecurity and I still don't feel ready. Mostly because I have no field experience really but it hasn't stopped me from applying for jobs. Hopefully I'll land one soon
Hi UnixGuy! I'm about to graduate with a degree in computer information systems and I was wondering what would you recommend for me to do to pursuit in a cybersecurity field? should I go and work on certification after this related to cybersecurity like Google Cybersecurity certification ?

if you already started studying and you bought the material then by all means continue! this video is intended for individuals who want to work in cyber security :) finish it asap and do something else quickly you can also get an IT support job without it

No, I recommend doing GRC Mastery: ruclips.net/video/C6IgksBpMF4/видео.html and after that securtiy+ and some ISACA later down the track (because they require 5 years experience)
@@mauricecioccato9818 Excellent work. Honestly if you've done security+ and GRC Mastery, then you don't *need* more certification. What you need is practical experience so your goal is to get any job relevant to IT or cyber security and build out your experience from there :)

Really don’t care about rejection. Reject me is their job to be concerned about. No mine. If I’m not good enough for them is their job to reject me. They are the ones who need to be concerned about not hiring me. 😊 Better to reject me than hire me and be toxic with me because I’m not good enough like them.

I will always be thankful that I have stumbled upon UnixGuy's channel here on youtube. A lot of other cybersecurity videos online are never this transparent and concise. Thank you so much! I will be waiting for your next videos!
glad you’re here 🙏🏻
thank you my friend for everything. i really enjoy watching you im half way in WGU and will get 15 certs after graduating. i love you and keep up the good work! thanks for giving back to the community!
Best of luck!
Genuinely feel like you were describing me, there. Especially regarding the procrastination and 'IT Foundation' excuses, to avoid applying for jobs.
I work in Game Development, coding in Python and C#, and 3D rigging etc - so I have some advantages over others. I just need to get on with it and stop doubting myself.
You have more ‘foundation’ than most people 😎
Just started cybersecurity and your video was the first video I came across when I checked RUclips.
Your channel is amazing!!!
Thank you so much!
Glad to hear that! Enjoy the journey 🤝
Thank you for the content you share Ive always been interested in the field but watching your videos has made me realize how possible it is to start so excited to start my journey
Glad to hear that Brenda! Excited for your journey :)
I really appreciate this channel! I learn a lot of new things...
Happy to help!
This was actually so helpful. I am graduating with an LLB this summer, but I am increasingly interested in cybersecurity, digital forensics and so forth. Thank you for the transparent information!
Glad it’s helpful Leia!

Hello, can you do a video on how to create a home lab with the intent to showcase or start your cybersecurity journey? What’s your advice on which devices to use?
no need to create home lab, you can just do projects:

Hugely underrated channel. I really wish everyone trying to break in to cyber could hear your video advice. Awesome video!
-from a SOC analyst with no degree 🙂
thanks for your kind words and well done on landing the SOC role! let’s spread the message and reach more people 🤝
@OG_Anime_ sure!
This is gold! Thank you so much!
Glad it was helpful!
I'm not even applying for a year. I'm doing OK in desktop support and want next years bonus... a year of studying a few certs then I'm ready. I can't go in too entry level. My google cert and next security+ i dont feel is enough for me so i have a few intermediate to do. Htb and more hands on
Enjoy the journey!
Putting profile picture on CV is it necessary or have advantage or not ?
not necessary no, I dont use my picture
Thanks, it’s a great video of the day. Still learning from free resources and saving for your GRC course.
Truly appreciate your advices for newbies like me in this field 🎉🎉🎉

Thank you for your clarification and for the encouragement ,i made this mistakes.
i just finished my Google cybersecurity certificate and planning to start applying for jobs, though so far like you said many companies wants candidates to have at least minimum 2+ years experience.
continue to study for harder certs and follow one of my roadmaps, the google cert is just the beginning, and enjoy the journey 🤝

Good for you! Hoping for a dramatic change like this, been 10 years in janitorial. Planning to start studying and prepping as soon as I get a computer
I have yet to see a job posting where they aren't asking for an associate, bachelor's, or a masters degree. Where are these roles that don't ask or require a degree? What are the chances of landing a job where they ask for a degree but you don't have it?
plenty! on linkedin and other sites! it depends, sometines its a hard requirement sometimes it is nice to have
Wow number 1 and number 3 so true.

If you started with the A+ then yeah finish it asap and move on ,
With 8 years of experience as a backend developer, is it possible for me to switch to cybersecurity? If so, which path should I choose, and what certifications are recommended?

Have been in IT for around 5 years and always in infrastructure project management. I am starting my part time cyber degree this year. Hopefully I could learn something with the degree and get a cyber job. Looking at certificates too like Sec+, CEH, CND, CHFI and more. 😅
Good luck with your journey! Maybe have a look at these certificates:

You know my problem is that I don't live in a tech city, so I would need a remote job or hybrid job at least and I don't see a lot of job options remotely. About 2 to 3 jobs in Midland, Texas 😑 if even that.
you may need to move to an area with more jobs!
I swear this guy helped me found a job. Even thoguh its not cybersecurity role, its a system engineer role but I feel like after 2 years experience I should be able to have enought expierence and will get a cyber security job.

Thanks for all this valuable information. I have off topic question. I'm about to start my Google Cert. I have Surface Pro 5th Gen. Is this sufficient for starting out or would you recommend a MacBook or regular Windows Laptop? Thanks for any help.
should be fine! do the cert with it, and if u run into issues then look at upgrade but u shouldnt need to

Hi, first of all I really appreciate your effort to help us lend our dream.

both are good and you cant good with either, do hackthebox if you’re not sure

yeah it happens unfortunately!
Always 💯
In doing isc2 right now, do you recommend this ?

I have 15 years experience in Industrial Controls Systems and looking to get into ICS/OT Network Security. I have the CCNA, Security+ certs. To specialize in this would you recommend GIAC certs in this area or ISA IEC certs.
GIAC
@@UnixGuy Like the GICSP and GRID?
As I explained in the video (and all the other videos), the cyber certs that I list will teach you ‘IT’ as well
some of GRC is inside the G Cyber certificate, should i do GRC just to round out what was brushed over in the cert?
it can help, but if you really want to learn GRC then you’ll need to do GRC Mastery:

The only option you have is to continue to study cyber security after work and try to land a job - if you like it great, continue, if not, then you can go back to your life science jobs
I dont see any other options.
@@UnixGuy Thank You
