Currently a cyber security student at WGU like Josh was. I really appreciate all this advice but I find it hard to juggle my full time job, full time school and then throw these other courses like try hack me in the mix, all while applying to jobs. Almost done with my degree and I can’t even land a help desk interview here in NY. Trying my best to learn while also trying to pay my bills and have somewhat of a social life. One day at a time I guess.
I’m enrolled at WGU as well for a masters. Got Security+, Google Cyber, A+, Ics2 CC, and now i’m studying for CySA+. Totally, feel what Josh is going through. I need to get more hands on, so i’ll definitely try one of these programs as I track along with my masters program. Still looking for jobs as well but haven’t gotten any luck. What’s your take on internships. I’ve applied to so many and feel like it would be better than a job because I would learn more as opposed to being required to know something for a said job position
Thank you for this. I want to change careers into cybersecurity, but I've no background in it or IT. I was under the impression I needed to collect certs like they were trading cards lol. Feels good to know that there are practical courses out there for me to complete because I definitely learn better by doing and worried I wouldn't have the skills necessary to pass an interview or succeed at the job. Currently going through everything in your free cybersecurity training video and then I'll move onto THM SOC 1 and maybe Let's Defend too
Amazing video. I have been doing it security analyst since November. I’m a 1 man team learning as i go doing l1/l2/l3 all at the same time. It’s interesting and i have the coursera google cybersecurity cert and the coursera in cybersecurity cert and i did the coursera project management cert.
Can you offer a video to go over someone who is a senior in cyber vs people starting? How to brush up on skills, new concepts, etc. without having to waste a bunch of time and effort on certs that are multiple choice.
Thank you so much for this video and for your recommendations I am in a course right now through Google for cyber security. I plan on completing it, and I'm doing my best. There are certain times where I feel like I am learning absolutely nothing. Is it good to know I like your client, if one way fails me, I'm not stupid and there are other ways to expand my skills. Thank you again. My first instinct was correct. Checking off the right answer or series of answers in some boxes I'm learning a bunch of verbiage doesn't get you a job. Proper application of the skills you learn and master is what does it, especially for a beginner.
@@UnixGuy it hasn't all been completely pointless I have a good memory or else I would have stopped a long time ago. But someone in my family said don't think so hard. Treat this as a good stepping stone. So it's the beginning of my beginning. I'm nearly done. Add a minimum, at least I have learned not to waste any voucher or more of my own money on an official exam just yet.
I graduated Junior college way back in 2002. I have an associates of science degree which ended up serving me no purpose due to health challenges.. now that's most of that behind me, I am simply determined to have useful knowledge,, not just some fancy piece of paper that is outdated before I even get started . At least now I know that having a fancy degree or certification doesn't mean anything unless you really can execute the skills to back it up. And generally speaking, about myself, it may take me longer than most sometimes, but the one thing I don't do is quit on education. I really do owe you a huge debt of gratitude for showing me at least two alternatives to continue to genuinely educate myself while learning skills that are immediately applicable to any position.
Hi Unix guy! Thank you very much for the awesome content! I'm halfway through the Google cert and I was wondering if i could do the Let's defend SOC pathway while i do the Google cert as well ,or if it would be better to wait until i finish the Google cert? Thanks again.
Great video. Just popped up at the right time. Could you please make a video giving a comprehensive list of study materials for the comptia sec+?. Thanks a lot for all the great info
thanks Unix Guy! Josh's stroy is very informative, planned a roadmap for me, started Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate, i am more than happy to have your guidance to put in place and land a cyber security job 👍
I just recently discovered your channel, and I really enjoy it. I was wondering what a good road map would be to become a cryptographer. I currently already have an Associate Science in math and physics, as well as an Associate Art in computer science.
hey Andre, cryptographer isn’t really a specialty. Its something that academics do; with extremely limited roles. If you just want to do that then consider a PhD in that area
As always thank you so much for the amazing content and most important, THE MOTIVATION!!! I just need a small advice even though I have seen all of your vids, I'm currently doing a Master's in InfoSec and am planning to do a certification while doing the labs you suggested. Which one would be more suitable Sec+ or BLT1? I do find BLT1 more interesting for its labs and hands-on exp.
Sec+ is knowledge based while btl1 is hands on experience.. so do BOTH.. with yo education, Sec+ should be cakewalk, and then do btl1 for the experience
yea the only issue with SANS is that the price is atrocious. You can do ALL the certs that I mentioned in the video for less than 2000 dollars whilst ONE SANS course is like 8000 dollars and they usually have one or two labs ar best.
@@UnixGuy Thanks for the reply. Yea, I understand the price is atrocious. However for me, I am blessed to have earned GI Bill benefits that allow me to do their full bachelor's program for free.
Great video as always ❤ I really enjoy how you share the passion and the knowledge for the cyber security domain , so long story short , I'm a fresh graduated cyber security engineer, I just got a job as grc auditor and it's really great I've been learning a lot of things but as you know it's not a technical position and I'm feeling kinda off as I'm not using my full potential , to be honest I'm aiming in the future for a cyber security consultant and maybe after that a CISO , I'm really struggling to Find the path that will get me there , I really appreciate any advice on this matter 🙏
congrats on landing a role! that role is perfect if you want to pivot to consulting and CISO; technical roles don’t make you a CISO. Make sure to do this training, it will level up your entire GRC/audit journey: ruclips.net/video/C6IgksBpMF4/видео.html
Could you do a roadmap video on best routes/skills/education to become a CIO, CISO, CTO, etc?… C-suite level jobs are obviously incredibly hard to land but I feel there is very little information out there on how to land these roles
because those are not jobs you target but you build up the skills as you gain more experience in managerial positions and for CISO you’ll need solid GRC skills because at that level you’re managing risks for the business as opposed to doing technical work
@@UnixGuy thanks for such a quick response. I only ask because I just landed a SOC analyst position (I start in June). I have a CISSP but little hands on technical experience. I know ultimately, in the next 10 years I would want to land a C suite level position but have no idea what skills would be most important to focus on along that path.
@@omars6069 if you want to be C-Level then focus on GRC skills and try and move to consulting or management as soon as possible; technical work wont get you there
Thank you ❤ for amazing content.I really appreciate the helpful information! I'm new to cybersecurity, and I was wondering if the Cisco Networking Academy's Junior Cyber Analyst pathway is a good choice for beginners like me?🤔
Is it possible to do the google cybersecurity certificate after school? I have been watching your videos for a while now and I’m really interested in cyber security field gaining more information about it through your videos. Please let me know your opinion, I will be waiting :)
I’m getting a general occupational certification for cybersecurity in may at my college and I’m kinda fearful it’s not enough to get a job, just looking for some advice.
I dont know how good that program is but usually colleges dont really prepare you for the job market which is why we need to do certifications, follow the plan in the video
Thanks again for that valuable information!!! It was refreshing to see that you still mentioned CompTIA Security+ because we all know that the majority of the companies are dancing to the beat of the Government's drum when it comes to what certifications are required (mandatory) for the job. Best wishes to you as always!!!
Thanks for the great video as always. Do GIAC certs (I have a chance to do GCIH & GCIA) treated like any other multiple-choices as well? I have Sec+ and CISSP (2/4 qualified) for multiple choice certs. I'm gonna focus on hands-on stuff after GIAC anyway but just curious
Thank you for this! I think the main confusion for beginners when it comes to “recognized” certs is that yes, a hiring manager isn’t only going to look at certs but to get through HR in order to get to the hiring manager, you have to have those “recognized” certs. Otherwise, your application is getting tossed.
again that’s an assumption that I have no idea where it came, no hiring largely doesn’t work like that… even after I posted weekly success stories of people landing jobs, this myth still doesn’t want to die 🥲
Yeah it's Defunately a myth, I'm currently job searching and have an old IT qualification barely anyone recognises Any more and one been getting alot of interviews purely based on my ecoeeirnce, haven't kneed the right position yet, but definitely haven't had any problems getting interviews

@UnixGuy I have recently found your channel and have been following you since. I am a professional telecommunication engineer from Sydney, working in Telco Operations and NOC environment for more than a decade. Now looking to break into cyber security, preferably in SOC, as I have years of experience in (ITIL) Incident management and response in telco domain. I am doing the google cert now, what should I do next? GRC mastery or Lets defend as you mentioned in this video? Which pathway will be the most efficient for me to make a gradual career transition? Thanks in advance mate!
welcome here! the most efficient path is to do both! letsdefend will give you technical skills and grc mastery will give you non-technucal skills. Both skillsets are required for so many jobs which will open so many doors for you!
Helpful video, as usual. I am an experienced software engineer with a bachelor's degree in IT and some product management experience with a total of 7 years of experience in IT. Within the past year I have taken some certification including Google Cybersecurity and IT professional certificates, as well as the ISC2 CC. I have been creating documented reports with serveral IT/System admin work I do within the Linux OS (and Windows). I have done some HTB challenges and completed Tier 0 and Tier 1 lessons. I am still *unable to land a cybersecurity job on LinkedIn* as I am planning to change career into cybersecurity. My current role is a that of a Software Techincal Writer. (3 years of experience). Any advice will be much appreciated.
@UnixGuy , thanks for the feedback. I have been watching your videos and I got the idea that hiring managers care more about the skills rather than the cerificates. I started doing courses on letsdefend. Still continuing lessons on HTB. I have done lots of hands on stuff at this point but I honestly feel like LinkedIn isn't good a place anymore for searching jobs because I designed my resume to reflect my skills I got from courses and labs and also programmed a couple of malware. Let me know what you think.
@@marufrahmandigital again, your problem isn’t LinkedIn, you have only done basic stuff. Do the certs mentioned in the video instead of blaming a job search website for your lack of skills. Sorry but you haven’t done enough, that’s whats holding you back, not Linkedin
I spent 11 years with Verizon on their first FiOS Operations team. I left that in 2017 to be a NGFW TAC Engineer with PANW. After a year I was burned out and went to State Farm doing FW Polciy audit for a lil over 2 years. I did the same for Equitable for about 6 months and then wound up on MunichRE's FW Hardening team for a coupe years. I am now back with PANW as a Customer Success Engineer and I've picked up my PCNSA (working on PCNSE currently). I still don't feel like I'm in CyberSecurity. I feel more NetSec than anything. Can you speak on the difference between the two? I think of Cyber as more SOC, Forensics and Threat than I do FW or IPS/IDS
you’re right, you are a network/firewall engineer, so your feelings are valid. Whilst networking/firewalls are needed, they’re not really the core of what cyber security is about (that’s like saying we need electricity, but electrical engineers aren’t in cyber security) I spoke about specialties here: ruclips.net/video/qx3Zu5GdiQs/видео.html

@@UnixGuy the CPA exam is in 4 parts. As of Jan. 2024 one of the old parts was dropped and in its place a new choice was added, ISC, Information Systems and Controls, which is a (rather easy, memorization) cybersecurity and IT audit exam.
BS in cloud computing, A+, Net+,sec+,cloud+,pentest+,project+, CISSP, Google Cybersecurity, Google IT Support, ITL, Linux etc. and various advanced projects STILL hard to even get an interview . Credentials are overrated in this time of layoffs and tech shift.
That’s what I’m saying in a previous comments and I don’t have 10% of what you have and constantly apply for jobs with tailored resume according to their needs. Never get an interview or at least the first call

One day at a time I guess.
totally undersrand and as you said. one step at a time! learning takes time, enjoy the journey!
I’ve applied to so many and feel like it would be better than a job because I would learn more as opposed to being required to know something for a said job position
internships are great, take what you can get :)
Currently going through everything in your free cybersecurity training video and then I'll move onto THM SOC 1 and maybe Let's Defend too
enjoy the journey!
Thank you for the suggestion
Most welcome 😊
Amazing video. I have been doing it security analyst since November. I’m a 1 man team learning as i go doing l1/l2/l3 all at the same time. It’s interesting and i have the coursera google cybersecurity cert and the coursera in cybersecurity cert and i did the coursera project management cert.
keep going!
Hey what do u think it’s a good salary when starting as a security analyst (also depends on the certs you have)
Can you offer a video to go over someone who is a senior in cyber vs people starting? How to brush up on skills, new concepts, etc. without having to waste a bunch of time and effort on certs that are multiple choice.
this video is applicable to you :)
In this video I will do the THM SOC 1, BTL1 and HTB CDSA. Alongside other certs. Thanks 👍👍
great courses
Thank you so much for this video and for your recommendations I am in a course right now through Google for cyber security. I plan on completing it, and I'm doing my best. There are certain times where I feel like I am learning absolutely nothing.
Is it good to know I like your client, if one way fails me, I'm not stupid and there are other ways to expand my skills. Thank you again. My first instinct was correct. Checking off the right answer or series of answers in some boxes I'm learning a bunch of verbiage doesn't get you a job. Proper application of the skills you learn and master is what does it, especially for a beginner.
💯 honestly multiple choice based learning is pointless, specially for what we do
@@UnixGuy it hasn't all been completely pointless I have a good memory or else I would have stopped a long time ago.
You know it's a happy day when UnixGuy uploads a video :)
🙏🏻
What a video!!! now im getting some confidence in order to switch my domain🙏
👏🏻
Hi Unix guy! Thank you very much for the awesome content! I'm halfway through the Google cert and I was wondering if i could do the Let's defend SOC pathway while i do the Google cert as well ,or if it would be better to wait until i finish the Google cert? Thanks again.
I think do it after you finish, but wait to see what UnixGuy says
best to do one thing at a time, finish google then move on to the next
Great video. Just popped up at the right time. Could you please make a video giving a comprehensive list of study materials for the comptia sec+?.
Thanks a lot for all the great info
People have been using free videos from professor messer
thanks Unix Guy! Josh's stroy is very informative, planned a roadmap for me, started Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate, i am more than happy to have your guidance to put in place and land a cyber security job 👍
you got this 👏🏻
Very good advices, my friend
🙏🏻
Thank you so much. Love from India🙏🥰👌👌
Thank you too!
5:21 I'm like Josh can you listen the certs I can initially start with the ones you mentioned here
Start here:
ruclips.net/video/rz0RL4Xue-A/видео.html
As always thank you so much for the amazing content and most important, THE MOTIVATION!!! I just need a small advice even though I have seen all of your vids, I'm currently doing a Master's in InfoSec and am planning to do a certification while doing the labs you suggested. Which one would be more suitable Sec+ or BLT1? I do find BLT1 more interesting for its labs and hands-on exp.
btl1 :) or you can do both, starting with sec+
Sec+ is knowledge based while btl1 is hands on experience.. so do BOTH.. with yo education, Sec+ should be cakewalk, and then do btl1 for the experience
THis is why I am a fan of GIAC certificaitons. The hands on pieces test your application ability.
yea the only issue with SANS is that the price is atrocious.
Make sure to do this training, it will level up your entire GRC/audit journey:
ruclips.net/video/C6IgksBpMF4/видео.html
@@omars6069 if you want to be C-Level then focus on GRC skills and try and move to consulting or management as soon as possible; technical work wont get you there
@@UnixGuy I appreciate the guidance. Also, your content is very insightful, thank you for all you do.
Thank you!!! This is so helpful!!
🙏🏻
I very much enjoyed this video I will be scheduling a time with you.
looking forward to chatting 🤝
Thank you ❤ for amazing content.I really appreciate the helpful information! I'm new to cybersecurity, and I was wondering if the Cisco Networking Academy's Junior Cyber Analyst pathway is a good choice for beginners like me?🤔
Hi Naveed
No, it’s just a cert not a ‘pathway’. Do it, finish it quickly then follow the actual pathways that I provided
Is it possible to do the google cybersecurity certificate after school? I have been watching your videos for a while now and I’m really interested in cyber security field gaining more information about it through your videos. Please let me know your opinion, I will be waiting :)
yes most of us had to study after work, you certainly can do it after school :)
I’m getting a general occupational certification for cybersecurity in may at my college and I’m kinda fearful it’s not enough to get a job, just looking for some advice.
I dont know how good that program is but usually colleges dont really prepare you for the job market which is why we need to do certifications, follow the plan in the video
@@UnixGuy thank you
Thanks again for that valuable information!!! It was refreshing to see that you still mentioned CompTIA Security+ because we all know that the majority of the companies are dancing to the beat of the Government's drum when it comes to what certifications are required (mandatory) for the job. Best wishes to you as always!!!
🙏🏻
Interesting video, Thank you very much for providing you with this interesting insight.
My pleasure!
The lets defends stuff looks icredible even on the free offerring. Unreal.
yep good quality too
Wise advice as always 👌🏻
🤝
Thanks for the great video as always. Do GIAC certs (I have a chance to do GCIH & GCIA) treated like any other multiple-choices as well? I have Sec+ and CISSP (2/4 qualified) for multiple choice certs. I'm gonna focus on hands-on stuff after GIAC anyway but just curious
GIAC certs are awesome, the SANS training associated with them has some practical components, but yeah if you can afford GIAC do them :)
I’m glad to hear let’s defend that’s what we are currently working on
great choice!
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Funny thing is I work at digital forensics corporation as a logistics manager and prepare devices for the engineering team but want to do GRC
totally understand, I moved from technical work to GRC as well 😎 this is the training that can get you there:

Hi @unixguy, thanks for your videos. Please I am new to Cybersecurity and Tech. I have just obtained my CC certification but I don't have a personal laptop and want to buy one. Please which laptop can you recommend 🙏 thank you.
the one that you can afford :)
Oh wow really? Someone was telling me to buy a Macbook, that it is easier to install the required apps on there than other brands like HP?
@@Blencoshub it doesnt if someone tells u to buy a mac but you cant afford it, then whats the point? buy something that you can afford and make do with what you have :)
@@UnixGuy yes thanks. I just want to buy something that works and not waste money in something that wont do the work. Thank you

Hello 👋 which operating systems is better, convenient to use for cybersecurity, Apple macOS or Microsoft Windows?
Thanks for your hard work 🙌
both are fine for learning, it doesn’t matter

How someone completely new to IT can be a cybersecurity consultant or a trainer for cybersecurity? Any roadmap for this?
they first need to gain knoweldge and experience before they can teach something
Thank you for always guiding us u are amazing
🙏🏻
Hi , thank you for your resources. I’m a Tech support Analyst at a local bank , I want to get into GRC ; about to pay for CompTIA A+ - so I shouldn’t? But go with your own course ?
hey! A+ is really not relevant to GRC at all, A+ will teach you how to fix laptops
yes grc mastery will teach you GRC
Thank you 🙏 for uplifting my confidence.
I need to talk with you please . 🙏
you are talking to me now in the comments 😜
I'm currently enrolled at wgu for a bachelor's in cyber security and information assurance. I just finished a+ core two and have network + next. Your videos make me doubt even doing the degree at all, and now I'm confused on what I should do
that’s not what I meant! continue the degree, study hard, but also keep in mind that you will need tackle practical certs at some point :)
@@UnixGuy I'll try to fit it in after security+ in the fall
WGU is best . Save tons of money and get a degree. They pay for certifications too.
@@pvs108 I counted. 14 certifications in the bachelor's program I'm in
WGU in not the way to go lmao y’all just want the degree in the shortest amount of time possible 😂
Is the GRC mastery course free?
Because, I'm seeing purchases on the site!
none of the coursed in this video are free.
@@UnixGuy Thanks a lot
great video! thank you
Glad it helped!
Any advice will be much appreciated.
hey mate, you cant get a job because all you did was basic entry level certs; time to step it up a bit, follow the certs recommended in this video
WE MUST PROTECT THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS.
🙏🏻
Thank you!😁

I am currently following your advice from the cloud security video you posted. Should I do any of these as well to make me more marketable?
the cloud sec video is good, stick to that!
Whilst networking/firewalls are needed, they’re not really the core of what cyber security is about (that’s like saying we need electricity, but electrical engineers aren’t in cyber security)
I spoke about specialties here:

Currently doing THM jr penetration tester and i seriously love it. It's so hard but so hands on.

Review the new ISC section of the 4 part CPA exam.
what?
Never get an interview or at least the first call
well if you watched the video; you only did theoritical multiple choice stuff so focus on getting practical certs as explained
You have the CISSP? You shouldn't have any problem getting a job, keep trying.
