The “steering gear” aka the rack and pinion is a dealership item. The part is electronically paired to the car. Ask me how I know. We had our focus at a generic mechanic shop. I order a discount r&p from eBay. The part came in and was in sick bad shape that the mechanic advised against using it. So we ended up ordering a remanufactured ford oem r&p. The mechanic assembled the parts to the focus but they kept having issues with the steering not working even though everything was hooked up correctly. Finally they had to take it to a dealership to have it paired. The result is it cost more that if we went with the dealerships quote.

2012 Ford Focus....had the steering gear go out around 180,000 miles. Went to Pick 'N Pull and pulled one out of another focus. swapped in...worked like a charm. Probably $150.00 Dealer wanted $1500 to replace it.

have had a decent amount of these issues on mine, just over 219k miles, its pretty much worth it to do shocks if you're gonna do front lower control arms as i had the shocks wear out and kill some brand new tires in 5k miles. is also a decent idea to get some adjustable rear camber arms as the factory spec is pretty much a dejected shrug (-1.41 +/- 0.75) to keep the rear tires from getting some excessive inner wear.

I had a few and only real issues have been sticking forks. A new clutch and forks and they have been solid since. All 3 have needed forks around 140k

Hi thank you so much for a wonderful video selection. I have a 2005 Ford focus and my o/d off light is stuck on and the button on the shifter doesnt change this. The car will not downshift to overdrive on the highway. Im hoping a ECM or transmission reset might help, how do you do this?

the od light being on may indicate transmission codes stored. I would scan for codes

just got rid of my 2014 ford focus that turned this video into a checklist… the other thing i’ve noticed a lot w my ford focus & others w/ high miles is the SHAKING my whole car felt like a massage chair for a good while before it died.

Maintain your cars better and they will last. Shaking could be attributed to bad motor mounts. They don’t last forever..

Basically when I put the gear in drive it shows it changing on the indicator on the dash but I can’t hear or feel it. I have an automatic transmission & when I put the car in any gear it won’t accelerate. I was wondering if it could have something to do with the computer

I respectfully disagree with the whole knuckly.. A timken bearing is a longer-lasting solution . Those knock-off knuckles and bearings will last about half as long as OEM.. but, that could also be long enough I guess.

    HI Ben
My name is Frank. I messaged you 6 or so months ago regarding changing fluid in my dual clutch transmission. I took your advice. Got the Amsoil fluid changed it through the vent tube is perfect thank you currently the car has an issue. It has 235,000 miles on it. Got it new I do all the maintenance except for certain things that I I’m not capable of doing mostly I can do the brakes , shocks struts, tuneups things of that nature. My question is this the other day it was 85° out. My son drove the car to the store 10 miles away it was fine.He came out got in it to leave started the car put the AC on it was blowing hot air when he drove to the store it was blowing cold air,he thought it was weird he stayed in the parking lot for about 5 minutes or so it kept blowing hot air thr temperature gauge went up and the hot light came on ..He said he thought the fan was NOT WORKING. He sat in the parking lot for 10 minutes. The temperature gauge went down to normal place status of the car. Drove it home. with the AC off the temperature gauge didn’t seem to go up, but he thought the fans were not working when he got home. What do you think? This could be also say that the past few months occasionally he’ll get out of the car the car I’ll be sitting for 20 minutes 30 minutes will be outside and the fans will come on for no reason at all thank you very much for your help

Hi Ben would this cause the AC and fan to not work and car to put on hot light one day ,then the following day the AC works ,fan is working with normal temperature??
You probably already answered this,, I have a lot of faith in your work and the fact that you have dealt with these cars for an extended period of time.. You’re really good at this my friend.. Thanks again

Im a ford tech. Currently own a 2013 focus I got last November. But driving other focuses. I feel like Mine feel like it has slow engagement on the clutch compared to others. Also intermittent issues. When I back of slow. Tight space so I just let my foot of the gas. Once I try to give it gas it would rev up. Had to put it back in park, then I had throttle response. No dtc codes. Tcm is 5 years old it was replaced 2020. Was wondering if tcm controls the throttle body or do I have a faulty throttle body. Clutch, shiftforks clutch actuator were replaced. I was wondering if my tcm is causing the issues. I still have 14m02 open

The cat should last forever if the engine is kept running properly. The problem is you have clowns who don’t change their plugs on time and think 7k mile
oil changes are a good idea..
