Always ask if the head gasket recall has been done. I bought mine and the purge valve went out (which was a recall on all Focuses), so I replaced it myself with no issues. Easy fix.

YES! I knew i was forgetting something MAJOR. Very Very important to ask about this. It was done at 3k miles on this car that I bought, most RS owners took it serious luckily

I just saw a video on visually checking the gasket. The correct gasket pokes out a bit and has a brass rivet.
You can see it (or not) if you take the cover off and take some flashlit pictures down low on the block

I lucked out and found a RR ‘18 RS in 2021 with 4400 miles on it. Barely used and well maintained. It is now my daily driver, and I look forward to the commute every day. Since I rely on it, and it’s in such good shape, I am hesitant to launch it or try drift mode. That said, the comment about the Quaife LSD making it more playful when drifting has me intrigued, and I may have to test that out when I get an opportunity.

  • @Poketroid23

Note about the oil: if they use 0W-40 ask if it has the Ford WSS spec. 0W-40 oils around the world met the spec when the car was released, but only the Motorcraft one met the spec in the US. Today, there's several oils that meet Ford WSS spec and using 0W-40 is technically the correct spec.
Note about the block: the open deck isn't the problem, the stock connecting rods are. Once you go over 400whp you risk bending a rod and that's what punches a hole in your engine.

currently thinking about buying a 2018 ( I am like 80-90% there :D ) with under 60k kilometer in the clock (37k miles)
it has it story but the fix was done in a Ford ASC that is selling it and I got the invoice for the replaced parts by the ASC so looks legit, the same goes for wheel geometry so I am relatively hyped
no tuning done so that's a plus for me
and the Ford ASC/Seller is putting on 3 years of guarantee on it

Just bought a 2016 with 47k miles 100% stock. Great deal (30k), totally babied, and went into the dealer for service every 3-5k miles (I knew I was buying it after I looked at the Carfax). Was a trade in for a nice truck at the dealer I was buying it at. Tried drift mode once so far, and I feel you on that, I'd rather keep it in super good shape and not mess with that. Paint is almost perfect with just two rock chips on the front bumper, after the last few I looked at, I knew this was the one finally.
Probably gonna keep it mostly stock with just a few things, like an exhaust, and an intake, and rims for summer tires (I live where the weather is bad enough, snow tires are recommended)

Another thing to look out for: 2016 models actually do NOT come compatible with Apple Car Play out the box, you need to swap the USB port. Easy fix, but to be aware of! And yep, I used Drift Mode… twice. Once in the rain. No urge ever to use it.

I'm an "Old Guy" and had a 2011 STI 5 door hatch (wagon) and was really dissapointed Subaru never offered the wagon again....Loved that car....Bought it with 92K miles but, it had been well maintained (timing belts, new Mishimoto radiator, silicone hoses) I put new braided brake lines/slotted rotors, HP brake pads on it and added a quality coil over suspension then drove it to just over 150,000 miles....No issues and where I live it's a LONG COLD winter. At 150K I was deciding if I wanted to keep it, but decided it was time to part ways....Loved that STI....was never "tuned" and still running like a champ when I sold it. I considered an RS to replace it but, insurance costs even for an "old fart" like me were kind of crazy! otherwise an RS would be in my garage right now.

VW can fill that hole. The GTI comes in a 4 door variant with a awesome 6 speed or a DSG. Has awesome tuning potential as mine makes ~460whp and is emissions compliant. It can come with a LSD if you get a SE with the Performance Package or a Autobahn and since it’s a electronic diff… tourqe vectoring. Alternatively you could get a R and have AWD. Amazing platform just make sure you get one after 2015 with Gen 3 EA888.

Full coverage on my RS is the same as basic coverage on my 2003 Suburban. I have a perfect driving record but that only justified the cheap full coverage, not the high $ base coverage on the Burb. My base insurance on my 1999 CRV is almost the same as the other 2... $1500 a year total for all 3 policies is no big deal.

My RS was totaled a month ago and I’m upset I didn’t see this while searching for another. Might have deterred me from buying the one I did. I found an RS with 30k miles on it with the elusive system too lean bank 1 code. Paid to have a 160 point inspection (outside from dealer) and only issue is the code *claimed to be from a tune* Was confirmed that there is aftermarket tuning on the car. How aggressive… I dunno yet car will be here Wednesday and will immediately go to a reputable mechanic for this platform. Anyways, I’m excited and a little uneasy but watching your videos makes me excited to hopefully keep this one forever. Wish me luck 😅

I would have to disagree with the Stock Cobb tune. It was so bad I was about to sell my AP till I got a proper tune for it from Stratified. The Cobb tune would over boost all the time. Ran WAY too hot. you could smell how hard it was working. It felt slower then the stock tune as it had something wrong all the time. I could see it causing some issues after time if someone just left it alone with it.

The open deck remarks at 14:10 are not true. This is not the reason the block (NOT the head; the head is fine and used in all builds) fails. There's a TON of misinformation in RS groups about this, with builders coming in to try and set things straight but no one listens. There are plenty of other race platforms (Honda K, etc.) with open decks as they provide superior cooling. The problem with the RS block is bad engineering of the outer wall around the cooling jacket between cyl 2+3 that cracks when the naturally higher cylinder wall deflection of an open deck block is increased too much. Speed Perf6ormanc3 has an excellent video on their channel with a cross-section showing this.
The stock block, according to almost every builder, is good to at least 500WHP once you put forged internals in it. A few Euro guys have been running it unmodified higher than that for tens of thousands of miles. If you want to exceed 500WHP it can be done on this block with modifications, but it's much more economical to switch it out for a 2.0TS block.
That being said, putting a big turbo in this car before building the bottom end IS ridiculous, and something you SHOULD be worried about as it points to a lack of knowledge in the person who did it. The "reliable" limit of the stock bottom end is roughly 400WHP (technically it has more to do with torque) and the stock turbo can easily get you there with very little modification (literally just a filter, FMIC, and downpipe) and E30.

Was my dream car and greatest achievement at the time, and seeing them still makes me react in different ways. All I can remember is the strong idea that it was not comfortable enough for a daily driver, and not cool enough for a weekend car. You are also paying way more for very little added performance over an ST. Prospective buyers this is THE biggest point about the car. I was given a full refund on mine and did not bother finding another, something to keep in mind.
