I had a ‘13 SE manual and absolutely loved it. No issues. After an accident I purchased a ‘14 SE manual. Disappointed to find an issue - but just one. The Sync module fails to detect voice commands about once every 6-8 weeks. It’s an easy fix if you consider accessing the fuse box easy. Just reset by pulling the fuse and putting it right back. same here on the 13 manual. hit a deer going 30 then later smoked another going 82 on the interstate. folded my entire front end, still going strong with just over 80k though it’s considered totaled now.
Fun stuff! We've had 3 of this generation Focus, and love them! The last 2 were manuals and never had any problems with them! We don't own one at present, but plan on buying an ST soon because since Ford decided no one likes cars anymore, they won't have anything new we'll want to lease!

My favorite thing about my 2015 Ford Focus is that when it was still under warranty, they replaced the whole engine block because of an oil consumption issue that cracked it, fuel to air ratios sensors have been worked on, new clutch was just put in, a new fuel pump, and it still drives like shit :)

Test mode is available on the 2008 - 2011 Ford Focus as well but it's a little more difficult than the 3rd gen focus , you have to turn the key in the ignition to accessory while holding the info button and the gauges sweep and you can go through all of the vehicle test modes and it has a digital rpm readout plus you can also see the fuel to air ratio etc just be careful with the stuff you toggle through it can mess up your 2nd gen focus , pretty much what test mode is , it's a Canbus readout and programming mode for the car and an easy way to diagnose issues , I worked at a Ford Dealership and currently own a 2011 Ford Focus SeS which doesn't have the transmission issues the 3rd generation does , the only major issues with the 2008 - 2011 Ford focus is the valve cover gaskets are junk and they leak oil down into the ignition coils and causes the car to run rough , the rocker panels rust and rott off the car , the flex pipes break easily , the front suspension wears out faster than most compact vehicles , other than that they are great cars , I have owned my 2011 Ford Focus SeS since new with 32 miles on the odometer and I haven't had any major issues at all with it , I also average combined mpg of 35 mpg , I drive the car 30 miles to work and home and I live in Upstate NY where they use a ton of salt on the road in the winter season and my Foci still looks new and has everything but the original valve cover gasket , the front suspension and the Alternator , it has 210.000 miles and still runs like new , and yes it still has the original motor and transmission and the original Rocker panels etc . I believe my car will last another 250.000 miles with no problem just have to do regular maintenance and keep the car clean and it'll last , as an after note a lot of people don't know that the 2.0l Duratec 4 cylinder engine and transmission in the 2006 - 2011 Ford Focus was NOT designed or Built by Ford it was actually Designed and Built by Mazda . Skip the 2012 - 2018 Ford Focus and Ford Fiesta they have more issues than mentioned in this video take it from an Ex Ford Service Technician ( Mechanic) .
In 2015 the fluid leak issue was fixed with a new gasket. Ford has updated the clutch packs constantly, 2015 and up are excellent. The clutch packs wear out because people drive them like a regular automatic by creeping in traffic riding the brakes. Riding the brakes won’t let the clutch fully engage and will burn it out. Love the video!
I know it's not the best for some and there are many problems but in my opinion, it's the best car for me! So glad I got one. And after fixing everything, it's still really nice to drive. The suspension is the best one in my experience so far. 😊 Btw, that chime test just gave me a big goosebumps! 😂
2012 SE was my first car, had to have the transmission control module replaced, the door latches fixed, and the catalytic converter throws a code no matter what
Just opt for the 5 Speed manual and completely avoid the DCT issues. My 2014 SE hatch 5 Speed manual has given me zero problems over 59,000 miles of ownership. I plan to keep it for many years to come. It's unfortunate that the automatic variants of the focus and fiesta are plauged with transmission issues as they are great commuter cars otherwise.
We have 3 focuses. 2007 automatic, 2012 5ap S, and a 2015 5sp SES. I really like my little car. The manual is zippy and fun to drive and it gets great gas mileage..
3:20 I just found that out myself, after having my Focus ST for 2.5 years! Although it's not just "wipe once", it actually puts the rear wiper into intermittent, so if you're in Reverse for long enough, it will wipe again. Of course this is regardless of the front wiper setting (intermittent, low, or high), as long as it's on.
Jacob Kachinski lol I have a 2014 and ya the Bluetooth/stereo system works great.... *_when it works._* But more often then not it has issues, like for example... • randomly disconnecting from my Bluetooth paired device and refusing to connect (/failing to play audio over the speakers if it _does_connect..), and the only way to fix it - and trust me, I’ve tried EVERYTHING - is by popping the hood and disconnecting the battery for 20 seconds or so. This got so bad and so frequent that I began keeping a log and found that over the course of several years it happened at _least_ once a month, sometimes every few weeks. • radio/accessories spontaneously turning on when the car is off and keys not in the ignition. Unfortunately by the time I realized this was even happening it had already done so much damage to the battery that it could no longer sustain enough of a charge to restart the car after being turned off, so it will need to be replaced but that’s been put off in light of current corona lockdown and the leaking sunroof (which is far worse than the radio but that’s a story for another time....) Oh, and I _do_ know “how to set it up” btw, so ya maybe _don’t_ invalidate someone‘s experiences (or write them off as simply user-error/ignorance) just because they differ from your own? 🤔 idk, just a thought ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ A good rule of thumb- _just because it’s not an issue for_ you _doesn’t mean it’s not an issue_ 🙃

People say this car is trash . Maintain it and it won’t . Any car can be defective from factory . Not everything is perfect . I seen these cars with over 150k on it and run fine . I seen some Toyotas as a lemon . It’s normal .
It's not normal at all. Manufacturers don't issue massive recalls and lose class action lawsuits over "normal" problems. I love my Focus, but my transmission is garbage. I've had input shaft seals replaced twice, clutch replaced twice, reprogrammed PCM/TCM (recall service), replacement PCM, replacement TCM, and the thing still hesitates like crazy on gear shifts sometimes, and my 8-month-old clutch has been slipping since month two. I've had all of Ford's recommended maintenance performed on my vehicle by my Ford dealer since I bought the car in October 2014. To this day it only has 64,500 kilometers on it. Ford has issued over 20 service bulletins about the PowerShift DCT, and lost a class-action suit in Canada and America over it. That's hardly normal. As much as I love Ford, and the Focus family, the 6-speed auto is absolute trash.
@@RocketDragons There are a few things you can do to help the DCT. Fix the ground (lots of videos available). Drive the car hard - it actually helps. Replace the DCT fluid with Motul DCT fluid (cheaper than Ford OEM fluid and a fairly simple DIY; no more difficult than changing oil). If that isn’t enough, get a tune from focus-power. I bought a 2015 Focus SE two years ago on the cheap. I’ve owned some high end cars and still do. While the Ford isn’t perfect, for what it is it’s quite capable. In two years I’ve added almost 60K kilometres and have only done routine maintenance. Engine is smooth with good torque. Transmission is not buttery smooth from 1st to 2nd. That’s about it. I’ve done all the things I listed above, other than getting the tune. It’s next on my list but for now I’m not losing any sleep over a bit of slippage.

So far the transmission on mine feels solid, I have 12,000 miles on it, but the focus transmission always feels a little odd at first until you get used to it. These newer transmissions are not true automatics they are 6 speed manuals with an auto shifter mechanism on them, which sounds the same as an automatic one but its really not. So it gives them a weird feeling and way of working especially at low speeds. the "launch control" is actually slower than just flooring it. for the best results, i usually deactivate traction control, drop it into low/sport and just mash the throttle. using the "launch control" causes wheel spin and you end up losing about half a second on 0-60. i have tested this many times.
Seriously? That's unbelievable! I had my BCM replaced due to corrosion but apparently it wasn't due to moisture. It was going to cost me $6K (Australian) so I kicked up an absolute fuss and ford eventually replaced it at no cost.

I had no problem with the 2014 S model with a manuel transmission. It was a fun car to drive. Traded it in at 80k miles for a 2018 ST. Sad to see the RS go so soon though. I was excited when they finally came to the US market.
The manual transmissions are fine, except the 6-speed in the RS which had a recall. It's the 6-speed PowerShift DCT automatic that is horrendously flawed.
@@RocketDragons There is no recall for RS transmissions. Maybe you're thinking about the clutch pedal drop. Or maybe bad quality control that caused leaks. Fords policy is to replace instead of fix.
@@TheDealer6373 Ford issued recalls for the clutch slip/fluid leak in March 2018 and November 2018. So yeah, that's two recalls for the RS transmission.
Nice to know about the wipers- have wondered about what happens when they get out of whack since they are not mechanically linked to each other. I have a '14 ST3 and its been a great car so far. Love the 6 speed manual - I havent had an automatic in over 20 years.
I got mine with 44k for 12 g's. The shifting Is a little wonky but who cares. This is by far the best looking and performing ford focus that's come out.
I have the 17 focus SE Sedan with the DCT automatic transmission. I drive it to hell and back quite often and drive it very hard. I’ve never had any issues with my transmission. I’m at 52,000 miles and it still gets up and goes with 0 delay. The only thing happening considered wrong is it occasionally yet very rarely shifts hard. But it happens once and doesn’t happen again for a while. I prefer this transmission over traditional hydraulic powered transmissions. Better power output and almost 0 power loss and all around stronger than any other auto tranny. I don’t get people’s issues with them. But there’s a reason not everyone are mechanics (not denying some people but very few comparatively have issues with theirs)
My issue with mine is that it's not practical. I've had a lot of close calls because of other drivers and delays going forward after doing too much short distance stopping. Before I got my clutch replaced the first time, it took so long for my car to go forward on an incline that I almost hit the guy behind me.
Yeah my favourite thing is driving my automatic Focus like a 16 year old learning how to drive stick and NEVER improving. Love getting whiplash from clutch slippage
You can’t beat the looks you get from new passengers as you take off from a stand still and the transmission jumps. You get to enjoy the look as if your transmission is falling from under the engine from your passenger.
My 2014 Mk III Focus sat in the back lot of my Ford dealer for 7 months waiting for a replacement transmission control module. in my DPS6 transmission. The clutch and shaft oil seal warranty for shudder had been dome previously. There is a electronics chip on the TCM board inside the unit, that fails from seeing too high a voltage in the original unit from the assemble plant, that has been on back order from China. Aftermarket replacements TCM's were not available either. When my car was finally repaired after waiting in line for a TCM (there were 17 Fiestas and Focuses sitting next to mine at the time of repair), the transmission warranty was extended and the TCM and programming expense was taken care of by Ford.
Btw, love my 2012 Focus SE, I race it, nodded it, all the love and never had a clutch replacement at 125.662k miles so far. And yes I abuse the transmission and clutches lol 😂 but it’s pretty durable of a car by my standards hahaha. -Cold Air Intake, -MagnaFlow Muffler - Racing Rims -LED Projector Headlights -LED Projector FOG Lights -Rear/Front Diffuser New stuff planned soon.
Also check the seams under the front of the hood, and the rear hatch if you have the five door, mine are both rusted. When it gets nicer out ill be taking off the hood/hatch and sanding/painting them.

@@DoubleBullet you need the cable to connect to the ECU of the car. Download fordscan and find the module from there. There are videos on how to do it. It will not get rid of it right away but it went away after driving 100 miles after reset
It is not entirely the transmission's fault. I have a 5-speed manual and the ECU gets stupid if the revs are a bit too low starting off. It is some type of response to prevent stalling, as far as I can tell. I have really noticed that if I don't give it enough gas in 1st, it will pretty much take over the fuel to prevent bucking or stalling. Even if you get on it right away, there is nothing there. Have to either hit the clutch or let off both and leave it in gear. It is dumb and could be probably fixed with better programming of the ECU and the transmission.
HamBown81 Not sure what year model you have, but Ford has a PCM update that will fix that. The local dealer did my 2012 5-speed and it made a big difference.
I've noticed everyone has the same issue with the jerking when accelerating from stationary or even shifting. I have a 2014 Focus SE and bought it at 60k miles. It kept getting stuck in 3rd gear and couldn't reverse so i got the clutch replaced. finally at 100k miles (40k later) it was jerking around so much i thought my trans was bouta blow. I checked the spark plugs. THAT WERE NEVER REPLACED. factory spark plugs and factory air filter. changed those and started running perfectly. could be trans issues or spark plugs so get those replaced first unless your warranty is still valid for a engine/trans replacement
The clutch and transmission shifting stuff was inconvenient but Ford replaced the clutch and reprogrammed as needed. Otherwise my 2014 Focus was a very good, very reliable, well running vehicle with a lot of pep and grace. But, I took very good care of my car and knew how to drive it. I guess it is not for everyone. I want to replace it ( I don't want to have to do this, but she was totaled in a collision, and I miss her badly) but I am not sure I can find another gem like my Focus was for me. I didn't really have any problems with mine. A few minor things here and there that were covered under warranty or not too big an out of pocket cost. I would just get mine reprogrammed when the shaking and shuddering was bad enough but overall it was fine after that. I always accelerated at precisely the right RPM. I listened and felt the engine and shifting, we worked together, like a team and to the end she took great care of me and sadly, in the end, gave her life to save mine. I walked away from a massive head on collision with only minor burns and bruising on my forearms from the airbag that saved me. Ford really nailed it with the safety and engineering of this car. Maybe there are some annoying little things I hear ppl complain about that I never even noticed. It is a shame they messed up with the auto manual trans. They meant well and just didn't get it right. Otherwise the car was a home run in my book and I am willing to risk it to buying another one. She may have had a bit of a deceptively tame and calm appearance in that I feel like her pep on the road would surprise other drivers who weren't expecting her to disappear as she would when she got tired of other cars riding her panel. lol. "This game's called I win!"

Everyone that's talking about the transmission...you need to go to where the cars batterys ground wires are attached to the frame of the car. And have a look-see. If you are a car person you will realize that the place where it is grounded to is painted. You should also know if wires are to be ground that the surface it bolts up to should have no paint on it. Ford painted it on the focus, fiesta and fusion in the assembly line because they pushed these cars out so fast plus it makes them money when you keep coming back in for a brand new transmission. So remove the ground wire bolt thats attached to the FRAME not the battery part, rough sand or use a bremil to remove the paint from the surface where the bolt will be replaced. Then put dielectric grease on the bolt, the metal surface you just sanded clear of paint front and back, and the top of the bolt (after you screwed it back in) tranny issue fixed! If it still does it...you may also have to do the other ground bolt areas (2) under your air box. After that use a obd scan tool and reset your codes and WALLA! Problem fixed. Your welcome 🤷🏿♂️

Pain in the ass logistically but that’s it for me. #DriveAManual

Thank you guys for the Tips and advice. I just got the 5 Speed Manual Transmission. It’s my first Stick shift and I’m loving it so far.
same here on the 13 manual. hit a deer going 30 then later smoked another going 82 on the interstate. folded my entire front end, still going strong with just over 80k though it’s considered totaled now.
Fun stuff! We've had 3 of this generation Focus, and love them! The last 2 were manuals and never had any problems with them! We don't own one at present, but plan on buying an ST soon because since Ford decided no one likes cars anymore, they won't have anything new we'll want to lease!
I recommend buying the St 225 if you are certain on it. as close to stock parts as u can and the repair bills will be routine maintaining cost.
The manuals never had the same kind of issues
Thanks for showing me this it can help alot with what needs to be fix on the car. I think u miss one if you switch the ignition to on do not cut the car fully on you mash the brake and the gas all the way down at the same time for 15 to 20 seconds and it helps clear the little lights in the dash that you have low tire pressure or oil change it resets all that.
Test mode and wiper service mode. Those two make this video worth watching. Thumbs up

Garrett McKie that has been my opinion recently.
It still has the transmission problems.

My favorite thing about the Ford Focus is how I question my decision in buying the car every time I drive it.
Why aren’t they amazing?
We have 3 focuses. 2007 automatic, 2012 5ap S, and a 2015 5sp SES. I really like my little car. The manual is zippy and fun to drive and it gets great gas mileage..
3:20 I just found that out myself, after having my Focus ST for 2.5 years! Although it's not just "wipe once", it actually puts the rear wiper into intermittent, so if you're in Reverse for long enough, it will wipe again. Of course this is regardless of the front wiper setting (intermittent, low, or high), as long as it's on.
My favorite feature of the 2016 focus is the shitty bluetooth/stereo system!!!! 💯🇲🇽🇺🇸
Patrick Rodriguez I agree, mine has me buying CDs again. Nonetheless I love my little “sapito” looking car
The capabilities of the USB are limited!
My 2014 bluetooth works great if you know how to set it up
Jacob Kachinski lol I have a 2014 and ya the Bluetooth/stereo system works great....
Unfortunately by the time I realized this was even happening it had already done so much damage to the battery that it could no longer sustain enough of a charge to restart the car after being turned off, so it will need to be replaced but that’s been put off in light of current corona lockdown and the leaking sunroof (which is far worse than the radio but that’s a story for another time....)
Oh, and I _do_ know “how to set it up” btw, so ya maybe _don’t_ invalidate someone‘s experiences (or write them off as simply user-error/ignorance) just because they differ from your own? 🤔 idk, just a thought ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
A good rule of thumb- _just because it’s not an issue for_ you _doesn’t mean it’s not an issue_ 🙃

The 11th thing you didn’t know is keep that interior free of dust.

I love my Focus. I got the manual Transmission. It handles great.
The manual transmission is the only way to go on these cars.
I love the launch control the transmissions are already bad on these cars we might as well just have fun with them
People say this car is trash . Maintain it and it won’t . Any car can be defective from factory . Not everything is perfect . I seen these cars with over 150k on it and run fine . I seen some Toyotas as a lemon . It’s normal .
Smurfeco 2.3 the trans is horrible
This car with a manual is a reliability beast. Love mine. Zero problems
No, it's not. You'll realise once you own a toyota.

@@amtraktraveler9118 Every once in a while I will feel a slight shudder in the front end on certain turns, but I have had that happen in all the front wheel drive cars I have owned it seems like. But so far mine has been pretty solid, its my 3rd Focus, I had a 2001 a 2007 and now a 2017, and I havnt had any major issues with any of them actually.

the "launch control" is actually slower than just flooring it. for the best results, i usually deactivate traction control, drop it into low/sport and just mash the throttle. using the "launch control" causes wheel spin and you end up losing about half a second on 0-60. i have tested this many times.

I do.
I have a 2016 focus SE and with the dct and I have no problems. 2012-14 was pretty bad but the transmissions have gotten a lot better since

My favorite feature is how it takes six months or more to get a replacement TCM for a warranty repair.
With the one-liter engine you got regular torque-converter transmission, so no dual-clutch to worry about. That option only came on the SE sedan.

10 reasons why this video just made me almost fall asleep .

It is a really good car for road trips. Something great is for the brights you push to turn on and push to turn off, as opposed to pulling.
Forgot about the backseat bench popping out to let the seat backs fold flat.
Right nobody ever mentions this love that feature in my zx3
I just did it by watching your video and thank you
I like my Ford Focus when it actually works lol, mines in the garage for the second time with gearbox issues i.e the juddering and shaking when moving off or accelerating hard.
You can get it repaired under the Ford warranty. Just replace the transmission control module and the dual clutch.
Your giving history I wanted tips and tricks lol
If you have the turn key ignition system you can flick it into start and let go, itll keep cranking until it starts.
Freaked me out the first couple times i did this accidentally! Now when I drive other cars, I feel like I have to turn the key forever 😄
2016 Ford Focus S here with 156,000 miles automatic, Didn't know much about about the car when I got it at 130k miles but its a awesome daily if you wanna save money and gas! Car slips here n there but i think its the DCT. Best 1,800$ i ever spent!
I thought most of these were just faulty quirks. 😂
My fav thing about my Ford Focus 2.0 Sport 2011: When holding your remote door open/close button for 5 sec OPENS/CLOSE ALL the windows at once. Had my Ford now from 212 and still love it to bits. The inside is just awesome quality. But, I know the transmission will give me issues at some stage...
2008 Focus S 5-speed manual... new clutch and intermediate shaft @ 150k, 1 ignition coil @ 120k. No problems.
That really cool, my 2000 Ford Focus Zx3 has the gauge test option as well
