  • Some of you reached out to me recently asking for an update to my 'Planning My 2022 Finances' video, so here we have a bit of a chatty (and rambling) update!
    As per my video in January, please bear in mind we all have different circumstances, budgets and values. Sharing this with you isn't to suggest what is important or not, because what is important to me won't necessarily be important to you. I just aim for transparency to hopefully inspire you to look at your purchases with scrutiny, work out what's important to you and then perhaps spend accordingly.
    These days I prefer to adopt a buy less, buy better approach, with a focus on quality over quantity, removing the clutter, and utilising my money in the best way possible.

    Hi Kirsty. I definitely found this interesting! I really enjoy how you speak out the reality of having to balance expenses and wants. So much of what I see on Instagram is people my age seemingly having it all (lovely holidays in Europe, buying their first home, new clothes, fresh flowers every week) but I am working on establishing my career and emergency fund so this just isn't realistic for me. Your content is much appreciated. Cheers, Georgia

      I completely understand that feeling. I too see people on Instagram (including people who are personal acquaintances) and think how on earth do they do all this. I always remind myself we all have different values when it comes to money. I vividly remember fairly early in my career, a colleague in a higher position, who was earning approx triple what I did, moaned at a meeting that she was counting the days to pay day as she had just pence in the bank. I couldn’t believe it. How was I not even thinking about pay day when comparatively I earnt so little?! As the conversation went on it was clear she had always lived this way, if it was in the bank it was spent. Of course it’s entirely up to anyone how they manage their money, but that situation has always stuck with me as a reminder. Maybe they don’t have it all, it just looks that way.

    Hi guys - it’s a bit of a rambling one I’m afraid - I did consider scrapping this and refilming but I’d probably just ramble again 😂 Also please ignore the fact the back of my hair appears to have gone rogue when I got dressed, it was fine before! 🤣
    P.S. For the fashion forward of you, I know it looks like I’ve stupidly ‘mixed my metals’, and that the earrings don’t go with the bronzy makeup but this is the annoying things about cameras at times, they have gold stars and moon crescents hanging from slightly bronze chains but they look totally silver here - fgs 🤦‍♀️🥴😂

    Ever since i discovered your channel Kristy back in Janurary. I also told myself to partake in this budget year journey. So far I only limited myself to only allowing purchases on art supplies, GameDev tools if needed. So far I've been saving tons of money with this challenge only spending little to near 100 a month now. It feels great even for entering my fifth month on it. Thanks for the motivation Kristy. So far I bought this year my year license of the modeling software houdini which costed me 200 a couple months ago only big spender of the year for me so far. So far so good.

    Hi 🥰 I do not think you ramble! I am always interested in your talks. I am a pensioner and can still take on board things you talk about.I totally agree with you about having a new boiler. I had to have a new one last year. The energy company did put up my DD in March but I said no to want they wanted to put it up to. Was told I would have to pay the difference at the end of the year ( Nov) for me, told them I am happy doing that. I would rather the money say in my bank than theirs as I know I will not use as much as they said I would!. Regarding the kitchen, know storage space can be a pain but please save for what you really want otherwise you will never be happy with it and may cost you more over time. 🥰x

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +1

      Good for you Teresa - you make a good point, a few people are of the opinion that the companies are using the opportunity to improve their cash flow! As you say better in your bank than theirs, especially if interest rates continue to rise.
      I’m still working out what to do with the kitchen, a lot of this video was just vocalising different ideas. I also need to decide if I think I might stay longer term. Obviously if I’m not staying, then I wouldn’t see the return on major building work and would be better just improving the kitchen rather than taking on a major project. X

      Thanks Susan! I made the term on my mortgage slightly longer than I would have preferred to, in order to make the transition from renting to owning a little smoother, with the intention to always overpay in time to essentially shorten the term to what it could have been. It’s silly really but it was always part of a larger plan. Fingers crossed for us both being able to overpay when things settle again 🤞

    I really enjoyed this video. We inherited a very old gas boiler. It was heating only and had been regularly serviced and worked fine for a few years, but boy did it guzzle the gas (it was the only gas appliance in the house), so I can well believe your boiler was the culprit for massive fuel bills. We ended up using electric heaters when the boiler became unreliable. Luckily we had a new gas boiler put in last year before the prices rocketed. We must have been the only people in the country who's bill actually went down. I agree about the bathroom, especially if you are lacking in space for the more used rooms in your home 💜

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +1

      That gives me hope that I can bring the bills down to something much more reasonable! It’s the only thing that can explain the increase, I’ve ended up using the gas stove less in this house vs the last one, so it’s only the boiler that can be responsible. Weirdly it’s suddenly stopped working for the heating, but is working ok for water so it’s got to be done. Fingers crossed that the water stays working until the plumber comes back with the quote and it can be done. I don’t fancy a summer of ice cold baths!
      The bathroom is amazing and wasn’t too long ago done, but it’s approx 13 ft by 9 1/2 ft so it’s huge! I think a larger utility with a sink and lots of storage all done so it still looks pretty would potentially be a better use of the space and compliment the kitchen as because there are doors on three walls of the kitchen you’re sort of limited design wise. The bath is a lovely big cast iron roll top one so I’d still keep some elements which might bring the cost down.
      Will see, I also need to consider how long I envisage living here too as that could have an impact on how much I potentially want to spend, especially given the market might correct.

  • @ibislife
    @ibislife 2 года назад

    Your home is lovely. What I recommend to do, is to keep the existing units, until you have the funds to do the big transformation. Put the refridgerator into the utility room, if there is space for it, and use the space where the refridgerator/table is to build some ikea kitchen units from floor to ceiling. They have amazing solutions for storage. With different colors, trimmings, knobs, feet, you can make it a freestanding unit, that could be relocated/reused later. An idea is to hang big mirrors over the window opening into the conservatory, or maybe mirror on the kitchen side, and a curtain on the other side. You could fill the opening with styrofoam cut to size. This is easy to dismantle again come next spring - or until you get your kitchen done. 🌸

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +1

      The fridge was in the utility before, but I was sick of looking at the side of it when I came out of the rather luxury bathroom 😂 I hate the look of appliances at the best of times. It can’t go back in there as I’ve now placed a large unit which works like an old fashioned housekeeping cupboard for storage.
      I’m not a fan of IKEA unfortunately, I’m proactively avoiding shopping with them and trying to get rid of some IKEA furniture I have in the house. I know people love it and some of it is good value (a family member has an IKEA kitchen too) but I’m not a fan.
      The mirror idea is interesting but would block all the light into the kitchen which is already quite dark.
      Filling in with foam is another interesting one but the major building work is likely going to be a few years from now, and I think it would look an eyesore until then!
      Thanks for the ideas though! X
      Edit - I do appreciate IKEA have some good reasonably priced units that go floor to ceiling. I had even considered them for some future plans in the utility but I don’t think they are particularly cheap and most IKEA things I have bought previously have not stood the test of time.

      Thanks Dominique, the garden has been a labour of love (and some backbreaking work!) but it does genuinely look lovely now and looks as though I’ve spent much more than I have.
      Unfortunately it’s not wide enough for a free standing island - I had the same idea. I saw a fab one recently with a granite top second hand for only a small amount, but realistically you’d just end up shuffling round it 😂 I did think about a dresser or a island instead of the table, but I’m not sure I’d really gain much.
      I know what you mean, I’m really on the fence. I think because the large renovation work would probably involve saving for at least a few years, I have been considering other options. I know a few people who have installed second hand kitchens in solid wood for as little as £400-1000 and kept them for a good few years, which made the space usable and enjoyable in the meantime. I think the lack of storage and counter space might drive me a bit crazy if I have to leave it as is for years 😂

    I have the same prob, I'm on a low buy but this year I've gone up a size so had no choice - i bought things on Vinted and have said I can spend £50 on Vinted every 3 months as that will get a few nice things and give time to get to my hopefully smaller size! With things that don't fit or don't feel like me anymore I've put them away. In a few months I'll look at them again, I find if I do that sometimes I like them again! Great video, thanks!

      I understand that challenge for sure. I still haven’t shifted the weight I regained at Christmas 🤦‍♀️ I’m doing my best just to wear the few things that fit reasonably well so I can avoid buying more, but I think buying second hand is a great way to manage this issue. I know what you mean re holding onto bits, I’m reluctant to get rid of everything and have a 30 pc capsule wardrobe or whatever, even though I recognise the potential benefits. In fact I have a party to attend in November and the perfect dress for it (it’s themed) is one I probably wouldn’t buy now. Had I tossed that I would definitely have regretted it and weirdly I’m looking forward to wearing it (now just need to lose the weight I need to to get back in it 😩) x

    It’s amazing to hear how much you’ve done already! I have an opinion regarding your kitchen (for whatever it’s worth). I don’t think it would be a wise investment to invest on a “for now” upgrade. Do you have any space at all to store extra kitchen ware, just to help your kitchen feel less overrun? Under the bed/couch bins, parent’s house, the back of a closet, etc. It will be several years before we can do more work to our kitchen, but we have a 3 season enclosed porch where I keep my InstantPot, electric griddle, slow cookers, etc. It works well for now. I also love when people keep original aspects of a home intact, even if they aren’t “influencer” worth. We have the original, local handmade, all wood kitchen cabinets and I will never replace them. You have such a great eye for decorating it seems - I cannot wait to see all that you do!

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +1

      Hi there, I’ve already got lots of kitchen items stashed everywhere else. It’s not that it’s overrun particularly, it’s that it annoys the life out of me having everything in other places and there’s next to no counter space. As someone who likes to cook from scratch, and am planning on making even more things from scratch (Mayo, ketchup, bread, etc etc) it’s so impractical. It’s fine for now - I think I probably didn’t explain the somewhat temporary option very well, you can buy a second hand kitchen including all appliances for about £2-300, sometimes solid wood ones for £400. We are very DIY savvy in my family so could fit ourselves. £300 for a kitchen that would last for several years and make it much more usable than it currently is (especially as I don’t use the oven either as it’s gas and takes forever to cook anything) isn’t a large investment in the league of things. I may find I don’t bother doing the major renovations if I did that and it would have been improved for resale if I decided to move on. But as it happens I’ve decided I’m not doing anything at the moment due to some other things that I need to do that are more important right now.
      Don’t worry I bought the house in many ways for it’s original features, many of which have been preserved and I would never remove them. The kitchen isn’t remotely original though, it’s had huge changes over the years, the removal of the range, removal of a chimney etc, the kitchen is probably from the 80s.

      Think they were called the Cheltenham Chelsea Boot. They are quite narrow fitting though, I remember reading a few people moaning in the reviews, I’ve found them fine though. If you do spot any I would avoid the tan ones, they had a rose gold strip up the back that all peeled off when rubbed.

      Believe it or not I actually cut it myself and have done for a few years now 🙊
      I use sulfate free shampoos and conditioners (mainly as if I don’t my scalp becomes ridiculously inflamed), have been using one by Kerastase for a couple of years now, it’s not the cheapest option but I think my hair is in better condition for it. Also try to let it air dry where possible and just use ghd straighteners the following day.
      Style wise, not really. I can’t be bothered with something too complicated these days. I used to try and do all sorts of things with it when younger but I try to just go with what my hair naturally wants to do now. I don’t currently dye it either, at some point I will probably need to as I’m not far off 40, but for now just embracing the greys at my temples and not letting them bother me too much.

      @@KirstyKirby Thank you for the reply and details! I have been letting my hair grow into a simpler style that hopefully won't require a professional to layer or texturize my hair every six weeks to keep it in shape. Each trip to the salon is about $75 US (with tip), and I don't color my hair. I stopped about 10 years ago because of the cost and hassle. Now I actually prefer my silver hair, and strangers frequently stop me to pay compliments. I've used Hair Story all-in-one shampoo and conditioner for two years now and love it. My hair and scalp are healthier, and I think it has saved me money overall (because it eliminated me wanting to try a bunch of stuff and I haven't needed treatments or deep conditioners). I also like that I can buy in bulk and only have one refillable bottle in the shower. I'm scared to death to cut it myself. I'd be interested in seeing a video on how you trim your hair yourself! 😃

      Hi Clara, it really depends on the weather forecast. Usually this time of year a dress would be fine, but it’s quite chilly where I am today. I had a quick look at the weather forecast for London and it looks like it will be maybe 20 degrees with possible chance of rain. You should be perfectly fine in dresses at that, but if you can I’d bring an option in case the weather turns.

    I over pay my mortgage. It’s dramatically reduced the amount of interest I pay each month, especially in relation to the overpayment amount. While I could potentially gain more investing it instead, I could also lose money. To me a paid off home or lower mortgage balance in the event that interest rates are higher when I come to remortgage is very important.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад

      I understand completely. I’m a big believer that even when it comes to personal finance, things aren’t black and white. I always planned to overpay my mortgage and I feel incredibly lucky that even though I’ve lived here less than a year, by being very frugal in other areas I’ve managed to overpay by over 5% of the original loan amount, which has brought the term down by almost two years I think. I love that! In my mortgage video I talked about interest rates too, I was confident they would rise in the coming years so it was important to me, and as you say, even more so over the next four years of my term.

    I started buying secondhand first on Vinted. Found a range of things there that i needed. Had to research a bit and not look for obvious brands but my shopping bill overall has reduced drastically. Taken to up cycling garden furniture from Gumtree. Worked a treat.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад

      Hi Simone, I do buy second hand clothing sometimes, I’m wanting specific things at the moment and people seem to want almost the same money as new. I don’t really buy much in terms of clothing and operate on a buy less, buy better now rather than my buying to excess days. I used to buy things just because I liked them rather than really thinking about my wardrobe in a more strategic way, whereas now I buy things I know I will wear a lot, that I am really really wanting, even if they are more expensive per item and ironically I end up with better items and spend less money. Sounds like what you are doing is working for you though so that’s great. Almost all my furniture is second hand and fabulous quality, I don’t know why people turn their nose up at it, it’s a great way to have good quality items for less. I did a load of stories on Instagram upcycling my current garden furniture. I think we’ve ended up at crossed wires here - I do the same things you do 😂

    • @simoneastewart
      @simoneastewart 2 года назад

      @@KirstyKirby thanks for the detailed and kind response. I agree with you a strategy for secondhand is best. I have a list. I tend to find Vinted is the best place where I can put in a lower offer that would be accepted. (I have given up with eBay!) But it can be pretty time consuming trawling through brands I like and boutique brands (I can’t afford at full price) to bag a bargain. I have to be pretty strict on myself and pretty specific. There is always the risk it does not fit or does not work in the home and you have the hassle of reselling. But overall I have managed to get everything from a Barbour wax jacket to Joules Breton top at a good price. I wear these items constantly. But as you say sometimes to get the right thing you just need to go into a store and find the right item that is the fit for you. Cost per wear can sometimes be better that way.

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад +1

      @@simoneastewart You've hit an important point which I intend to raise in a future video. Whilst I embrace second hand clothing, I have wasted A LOT of money buying second hand items that did not fit properly. I now buy only specific brands where they carry on with similar cuts and styles every season so I can be confident it will be worn. I found that for some of the money wasted on items that didnt fit (and sometimes sold on at a loss), I could have bought something I really wanted and was able to try on. Cost per wear along with buy less, buy better along with waiting for the sales seems to be working best for me.

    • @simoneastewart
      @simoneastewart 2 года назад

      @@KirstyKirby I think it’s a good idea for a video. I would also add that secondhand can be difficult if you struggle with sizing too. I have had most luck secondhand hand when it came to looser fitted items like beach kaftans, coats and accessories. But I would recommend buying secondhand first if possible, for environmental reasons. But the most ecological thing is of course to wear what you own already, so buying less is always best! 😊

    • @KirstyKirby
      @KirstyKirby  2 года назад

      @@simoneastewart I don’t struggle with sizing particularly. I’m not really sure how to take that comment. If buying loose fitting things like kaftans then of course that gives much much more leeway in terms of whether something fits or not. That sort of thing isn’t really anything I buy or like so I don’t have that freedom with sizing. Coats I would disagree on too, I bought a beautiful second hand Burberry coat on eBay, it arrived and was way too big. It looked utterly stupid so couldn’t be worn, I do think coats should fit correctly. Sizes can vary even within brands and I’m sure you’ve seen many videos where RUclipsrs buy the same size of clothing from multiple stores and they are all completely different.
      I support your choices, but as I say, second hand that cannot be tried on has its pros and cons and I’ve found contrary to the recent trending popularity of thrifting can end up wasting money. But each to their own, if it works for you that’s great, I’ve found it only works some of the time and isn’t the best option for me. I do consider the environment and am very familiar with the documentary ‘the true cost’ and the devastation of fast fashion on the environment (I generally avoid fast fashion for multiple reasons) but environmental reasons, whilst I’m considerate of them, is not my primary value when shopping for clothing I’m afraid - sorry! That said buying things, especially if I will wear them many times, regardless of if they are second hand or new, is much more environmentally friendly than purchasing many items (including second hand) that are worn once and then sent to the charity shop - but that’s just my opinion, you’ll possibly disagree there.

      Hi Paula, I did think about a second hand dresser there but I’m not sure I would gain that much tbh, especially as I don’t like open shelving (I know some have cupboards at the top but most are just shelves). I also thought it would probably still just look as cobbled together as it does now 😂. I did think I could look for one with doors that have the cathedral design on it so it looks more purposeful, but most seem to be more shaker or farmhouse style so I think next to the cupboard doors might clash (to my eye at least). I’m open to a dresser, but I think what I’d gain in a cupboard, I’d lose in surface space (I sort of use the table as make shift counter space at times).

      I disagree. The dishwasher was £40 second hand and not remotely a waste of money in my opinion. Also as I cook everything from scratch this creates much more dishes than some.
      Modern dishwashers are very economical on water, even the least efficient ones have been found to use half the amount of washing by hand. The most efficient ones have been found to use 10 times less water than hand washing.
