It appears you are painting straight over dirt and grease in some of the shots, 9.16 for example?
No mate, if you watched all of the prep I did, you'll see that that starter motor and solenoid was painted black and it was all flaking off, it was all ground over with a wire mop and degreased, it's bone dry buddy, just the remnants of the what little might have been left of the black paint on the raw metal.

I cannot imagine how anybody can even think that much less publicly state it. All I saw was a man meticulously go into every crevice and clean, scrape, clean and scrape some more eventually flipping a mundane, tedious task into a masterpiece! Pretty much like what this entire project has been. My response to all of this is thank you!! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and outstanding work habits which serves so many of us. Looking at some of the other parts you've worked on, I would have sworn that this bike spent some time in The River Thames. I've made a reassessment, and now believe it to have been reclaimed from the sea.😃

I did a similar project in the past. When was asked to repeat that for another engine, I had the engine soda blasted - it speeds the work enourmously, I can really recommend that

God it´s entertaining watching you take on all of these projects mate. You do it with such patience and accuracy! I´m the guy that asked about the draining of the braking system the other day, went great thanks to you and I feel like I´m slowly starting to dare take on more DIY-projects thanks to people like you. This video had me really considering if I should (really want to) take out my engine and disassemble it similarly to the way you did it and also remove the biggest covers and such with gaskets behind them before I leave it for masking and liquid paint at a professional shop. My question would be; For a bike that´s in very good condition despite being 10 years old and for only have ran 6800 km/4200 miles, would the prep work be the same in that case besides the obvious degreasing and careful wash? Love your videos!!

I'm sorry Del, but you'v spent all that time and money restoring and painting the frame, building the wheels, and modifying the engine with the big bore kit, and you go and give it the cheapest, nastiest rattelcan paint job yet. Thumbs down for that one Del.
Cheap perhaps, but 'nasty'?, not at all, it's heat proof manifold paint, Ive used it many times, and once it bakes on it's tough and durable, it has never let me down in the past, perhaps you haven't tried it for yourself?..

I used a VHT satin black on my 1340. But it's now peeling off already. I did everything you've done there. Are there any good brands of paint or is it I didn't do enough prep work?
I'm not sure exactly what product you used, but it is generally considered that all paint finishes rely most heavily on the appropriate prep so it could have been that.

Pretty good video I just wish you wouldn't have painted it silver. I have a 2004 sportster. I wanna get rid of the grey Powder coat and then powder coat it black. Something about that Gray powder coat Harley does drives me insane In a bad way.😂 I finally watched the video where the bike is finished. I guess the silver looks pretty good after all.🤙

I am currently tarting up my softail.Its so heavy as you know ,that I got it stuck in the mud a stones throw from my shed. could I shift it. Anyway, there it sat up to the top of its rims covered in a tarp all bloody winter. I had to dismantle it piece by piece outside in the cold and rain. Finally wheel barrowed it bit by bit down my field to my main workshop come shed where the full horror awaited me. its been off the road now, about two years, but I have it almost got it to the stage of reassembly. Just like yours, I have painted the frame, engine. Getting all the alloy covers and forks shiny again was a major pain literally. I'm unemployed at present, so work has stalled due to the cost of gaskets, oil etc, but I do expect it to be finished for next year (hopefully ). If it is, I'd love to pay you a visit some day and partake of your idiots collective. Because of all this waffle, I'm finding this project of yours particularly interesting. great stuff.

Hi, I have one thing to say about this paint. It is a heat resistant paint, shouldn't it be baked at high temperature after application? even the instructions of many paints say so.
...And when the engine starts for the first time.. that will naturally happen won't it..!?

Thank you for your kind words... the sticky foam strip is a paint shop product designed for these purposes, but if you don't have any, or can't get some, then DIY draft excluder is a good second best!

I sold my old sportster this spring and got hit on my Road King the day after in the traffic and now being 3 months without a bike has left me numb. This makes me realise how dumb of a mistake it was to sell my dear old Sporty. IMO rigid mount Evo Sporty is the best bike Harley ever made!

Road King is being reparied at the local dealer but its taking ages as getting parts for an older RK takes time. Will definitely be getting a Sporty again but in the meantime you guys keep me sane :D

was a noob before when comes to motorcycle, till i watch your triumph t100 and started learning from your videos and got the hang of it. now am getting a used 883 and would love if could show a cheap OBD that you do on a sportster, what to look for, most important how to read the basic.

I like the black, but it's getting to be TOO much black everywhere, on everything. This looks good! I can identify with your pain with getting that sprocket off. I just did the same, all for a neutral light switch! Harley sure didn't want that sprocket coming off! Take care, you two :)
Thank you so much for that kind approval, I wanted the engine to be a really bright and central focus of the bike, as the heart of any motorcycle is it's engine so it should take centre stage... once the masking comes off I can polish the casings which should really make it stand out.

Life seems to throw you 'curve balls' when you least expect.
I had to stop riding about four years ago, because of an arthritic hip. Various obstacles delayed getting a replacement, but it finally happened on July 31st last year.
Now finally fit to ride again, I was made redundant two weeks ago.
Nobody wants to employ you when you are 63...
Gary, mate.. We're so sorry to hear that, after all you've been through, you didn't deserve that on top of it all.. I'm thankful i got a PSV licence back in 86' as it's kept me in paid work between real jobs, most bus and coach companies are screaming out for drivers, they'll train you through your test, and we have guys still working with us on the coach side in their mid 70's.. it may not be well paid, but it's plentiful and secure... maybe give yer local company a call..! there isn't one of them that aint short of staff, even if it's casual work, School bus work, part time or split shifts, there is no industry more flexible..! maybe it'll help.. We've all done it hard, good to see your still doing your thing mate, since I started following your channel way back when I started my own Harley custom shop, 9 years on I had to shut down, covid killed alot of small businesses here in Australia. Thanks Gary, im pretty sure it's a bit heavier now it's a 1200, at least it seems it.. but you know how it is, a wiggle and a slide can move the heaviest lump..! like shifting a sleeping MIL.!
@@Moonfleet41 my bad, a 1200 it is! As for moving an MIL around, we’ll that’s quite a different story. In my case, I generally just ring the dinner bell and she moves. I don’t think the 1200 would respond to that. 🥴.
Crazy how tough it is to get off that drive pulley nut. When I removed mine on my ultra classic I ended up cutting it off. Any how great progress on the build. One question- is that regular off the shelf high temp paint your using? Thanks
Sure thing buddy, being a left hand thread on the right of the bike, they naturally tighten themselves up over time and of course it doesn't help when they corrode in place!

Hi Byron, good to hear from you, the engine lacquer is stable up to 800c for exhaust manifolds. At that temperature steel is glowing red so pretty confident it'll never burn and change colour on the engine block. Take care my friend, thanks for your support.
Takes so much patience to do that type of work but the right man is definitely on the job here and the results speak for themselves. Great tip on the foam curly-cues to mask the openings in the engine. I hope you and Penney are surviving the crazy weather over there. Please be careful. God bless you both. ❤👍👍

Sure thing mate, glad it helped, oil and fuel resistant, and heat stable even for an exhaust manifold.. i figured that air cooled motors get way hotter than liquid cooled ones, specially in weather like we're having now.! so didn't want to take any chances..

Glad you like the engine colour, stick with it, once the casings are unmasked and re-polished it'll look really bright and fresh, and hopefully contrast really well in the black frame..!
