How To Prep & Paint A Motorcycle Engine EP06 | Ducati Hypermotard Restoration
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 окт 2024
- Now that the Hypermotard engine is removed I can finally start with the preparation and painting. I've followed a similar process with the Fireblade rebuild I did a few years ago but this engine proved rather more troublesome because of the complex shape.

I like the ethos of "it's for riding, not showing". Nice job.
“I could probably take it apart” I’ve been there many times myself 😂 thanks for uploading on a Sunday morning 👍🏻
That took me back 34 years, when I did that to the barrels and head of my RD 350lc. I polished it all with Aotosolvol, I can still remember the smell👌🖖
That came out pretty darn good, Chopsy. Can't wait to see the re-assembled bike.
In all seriousness, you have absolutely no reason to feel bad about the job you've done it came out great. Like you said it isn't a trailer Queen it'll be ridden. Thanks for the all of the content & keep up the great work!!
Thanks Justin 👍
Good to watch. I'm doing a 992 motor out of a Paul Smart so this is very helpful.
Glad you decided to go back over it. 90% of painting something is all the prep work you do before hand. Cheers Chops!
That was a lot of work. Well done.
Chops, keep doing what you're doing, you knew what you were getting into. When its finished you'll have
a bike that looks good and goes well. Be proud at what you've achieved.
Thanks Robert! 👍
I used a soda blaster on mine plugs into an airline and being slightly caustic it eats away at a surface, then i used brake cleaner to wash it of using a spray garden pump worked wonders. Coming along well mate be safe and well
Looking good. Gonna be bloody brilliant
Great video. Love your attention to detail! Is it just me or does anyone else after doing such a project after paying for stripper, wire wheels, sand paper, scotch brite, steel wool.. All the cleaners from degreaser to acetone. Now good tape an obv a good paint and primer along with your time that adds up . then think why didnt i just send it out?
Because sending it out wont callis your hands ladies . That's why lol.
Great work chops ! Scotchbrite pads are great for finishing alloy 👍🏻
Practical and Simple !!!!
That's the name of the game.
This is actually very cool,I was planning for quite some time about cleaning my xjr130p engine with the same method but I was worried the metal brush might bite into the aluminium so it's nice to see it doesn't and that it can be done
Hi, might want to use a respirator for this type of work Chopsey. Its looking good though, looking forward to seeing bits going back together.
Yes did regret not having one... not pleasant! Wont make a habit of it!
@@LambChopRides Should have used one my self, found lots of carbon fibre bits in my nose this evening after fixing cracked acropovic exhaust earlier :D
When you say you went away for a sleep, you actually mean, you laid awake all night thinking about it?
Haha, yes correct 😂
Just finished same job on my Ducati 1000SS! First time doing an air cooled engine, hard work! Those rubber dampers will come off with a pair of pliers on the inner edge. I broke one, they are cheap and available. Good luck with the rebuild.
Yes it hard going eh Andy! I've removed the rubbers, will give them a clean up before refitted 👍
Really enjoying watching this project. Enthusiasm, passion and humour makes great viewing. Top man.
Looking great chops!
Very satisfying to watch, decent enough finish for a home DIY jobbie.
Well done it's coming nicely
Just seen this, currently doing a similar project with an oddly shaped xr650 engine too
I can see you filmed this a while back but just in case it's of any help on future projects, the scotchbrite bits on the dremel are pretty cheap and super effective
Run them at higher speeds, aggressive enough to get old paint and oxidisation off, but won't chew into the cases and don't need any hand finishing either
Awesome video 😎
14mins ain't long enough!
Good to see you have a normal working mans budget unlike some other channels mate.
I think it came out good for what you was trying to do. OCD can just take over sometimes😅😂😂
Brilliant, it’s going to look mint.Great you posted a video on a Sunday 👍
Holaa Chops!
Been watching all of your videos these years, and since starting this Hypermotard project, you got me waiting for it cause especially this one is a fave hooligan bike!
Wanted to do exactly the same thing, purchasing a 1100s, and restore it like new.
Very useful tips! Amazing job! Can't wait for new feed!
Greetings from Greece 🇬🇷
A nice trick to clean up aluminum parts is to use a soda blaster. Easy to make or use a small sand blaster. Load it with baking soda and go at it. No worries about getting grit in your engine. You can also do this with the engine installed with no worries since the baking soda will not harm anything. Its kinda messy, so do it outside. Just rinse with water to clean it up.
This provides a nice satin finish, no worries about getting to aggressive with the blasting, it will not remove extra material. You can leave the finish as is, polish it, or paint it.
Chops good job like you said its budget,, and your going to use it,, certainly is an improvement on what you started with and admitting that something is harder than you can deal with,, I do most of the work on the bike I own,, apart from the valve clearances,, liking this series a lot glad you bought it and not the aprilia, 😁😁😁☘️☘️☘️☘️
Great video again chops!
Keep them coming! 👍🏻
When it’s all back together you will never see any of the bad bits ,felt the same when I did a ccm supermoto rebuild .soon as the road dirt burns itself on those fins you will be glad you didn’t spend to much time on it ...👌
That's very true and the standard castings are very rough in places. Actually in some areas it's better than stock!
For a home rattle can job, it’s come out fine. The other parts your having done, will draw the eye away from the silver. Like you have said it’s a working bike.💪💪👍
Scotchbrite discs work a treat on projects like this👌👍
The time, effort and motivation. Good job sir good job.
Got to be happy with that.
When the side casings are done and it's back in the bike it's going to look mint.
Thanks Nigel 👍
Great work as always Mr chops. She will be a thing of beauty when completed.
You can't crank these videos out fast enough, loving them. Good luck!!
Nice watch on a Sunday morning. Cheers
Good on you Chops i myself would never attempt anything like this due to lack of skills but i greatly admire anyone who does and also really enjoy watching them. Very well done 👍🏻
Adam 🇬🇧
Thanks Adam, no skill here all just in the name of getting stuck in!
Lamb Chop Rides don’t sell yourself short mate.
Ah you absolute Leg End Chops, a new episode on a Sunday morning, I've been reduced to watching re - runs of Andy man cams first european tour for the 8th time.
check out Moto geo
@@Bow-to-the-absurd Thanks for the recommendation. Don't know why I haven't watched him before, think I thought he was American, so I avoided the channel.

@@Bow-to-the-absurd I subscribe to FortNine already but justify that because hes Canadian. I've even gone back to Likeable Rider and Calm Biker n the search for different content, bloody lockdown.
Looking good there mate. Should be epic when done.
Just watched the intro so far. I love you chops, don’t let this get weird
Keep them coming Chops. More and longer please. 👍🏍🍻
Kicking ass on a budget. Love it mate.
This is bloody great content!
Enjoying the Build series CHOPS ,gonna look good once finished....All the best mate.... Si
Nice ,really looking forward to following the rest of the project 👍
well done chops thanks for still getting the videos out .im very local to you and missing your triumph rides on roads that i know
Looks like some proper mandrolic hard graft!
That looks like it's coming along very nicely. Good thinking about the colour Chops. Very impressive. 🙂👍
A defiant improvement
I Really like it !
Amazing job Chops!
I can't wait for the next steps...👌👍
Fantastic, next episode tomorrow 2000, live. One hour version ? please
Really enjoyed this video, look forward to the next one!
Work it may - shine it must!
Great vid mate, a lot of work but worth it :)
Thanks Griz 👍👍
Spot on Chops! Great job, you’re giving hope to the budding home mechanics considering a resto project 🤟
Thanks Ed 👍
Enjoying this ! Good luck
Brilliant chops 👌 more please thanks from Danny
Thanks Danny 👍👍
great job chops! 👍🏻
Oh I feel like I am back at sch ool..I have learnt so much. I too am cleaning an engine. But mine will be a coffee table when finished. 😃
Really enjoyed that Chopsy! That paint job came out pretty good!!! Cant wait to see the finished product! :)
Thanks Kate!
I wait for this with bated breath! Keep em coming, chops!
Loving this series, keep em coming. This bike is going to look class
Thanks, will do!
Looking good chops 👍🏼 I bet your glad you spend abit extra on the prep work
I’m really loving this series, can the episodes be a bit longer?
Cracking job Chops well done buddy, she will look great when you get her rebuilt buddy
Amazing work...Well Done!
Looking good 007. ‘Twill be a lovely bike. BTW, Australian govt relaxed our pandemic laws this weekend. First ride in over a month was so much fun, even with every other bike in Sydney on our favourite back roads and highway patrol booking riders left, right and centre.
Good news! I bet its carnage out there 😂😂
anyone ever tell you that you sound like Roy Kent from Ted Lasso? 😂😂 looks good, learning a lot!
Hi Chops, great episode! Please don’t make the valve covers red!!! When you send the side covers off to the powder coated send the covers too in the same gold colour, won’t cost any more and it’s super strong stuff.
No agreed that's the route I'm taking 👍
enjoying this . thank you
Elo chops again good paint job take care ride safe mate
Surprised some company didn’t lend you a soda blaster or similar to try out. I bet they would have sold a load of them off the back of your vid. Looking good 👍
Thanks for this video Chops - I'm at a similar point on my Honda Bros - the engine will be out soon and it needs a repaint. I want it to look presentable but I don't want to throw loads of money at it! This video gives me hope 👍
Yes in the Busa will be protected from the road crap so perfect 👍
Watch Desmowerx 748 engine strip ok if you know what your doing. See him set valve clearances not as easy as you think lol very good paint job for what you need great series your doing loving it.🏍
Yes done a bit of research on the valve clearances.. hoping they are ok and dont require adjustment 😂
Nice job Chops & 10/10 for effort. I think it looking pretty good so far & realistic is the word. It's too easy to get carried away with these types of projects & before you know it you're throwing good money after bad. It should look really nice with those red highlights you mentioned. Definitely looking forward to the next episode.
Thanks RR, few people moaning I should have stripped the whole thing but that's going OTT. If it had to come apart anyway then different story
@@LambChopRides Yep agreed. Easy enough to say when you're sat at home watching but different story when you're the one doing it. The reality is you're always going to be limited by the time, money & expertise at your disposal.
Don't go red with the Oberon slave cylinder... mines gone almost pink. Would go black or silver. Looks great man Hope there isn't too much overspray on the rest of the garage...👍
Looking good Chops.
👍👍👍.
Dulux rebuild chops! Going to look a heap better with new goodies bolted onto it.
Looking good sir. Great series
Chops it’s starting to get to the meat of the tedious assembly being careful not to scratch or ding the prior work , good job sir
Yes have to be really careful as engine paint doesn't cure until its heated.. IE bike is started so chips easy at the minute!
That took me back 30 years ago on DT250 mx still got it 😁
Loving the rebuild mate keep the vids coming
Great job mate! Uve got a lot of patience
I'd be tempted to try a brush-on paint stripper first
As you said chops this bike is to be ridden not a trailer princess for shows 👍🇦🇺
Wrestled with the same problem on my custom r80 build. 30 year old engines are hard to get clean without blasting. I've disassembled heads etc to get vapour blasted to take the crank out and everything else needs a lot of specialist tools so I'll just have to make do. What I have found that works well is alubright from raceglaze off eBay for removing corrosion in hard to reach places. Knowing it's not perfect is eating away at me though 😭
Haha yes completely agree Steven, thanks for the tip but too late now! Where were you last week 😂
Great stuff Chops👍 love the cossy picture in the background moonstone grey if my memory serves me correctly.
Moonstone Blue! My old project 👍
LOVE IIITT!!!! 😁👍👍
Great work and vid too 👍👍
That came out really good, especially compared to when I painted my mirrors lol
At last some thing good to watch :) morning mr chops
Scotch bright pads are better than those sanding foam pads, available in many grades and is what body shops use.
I think you will end up disappointed, the paint will fail quite quickly. Guess next time you might have the confidence to strip the engine fully especially as you won’t need to do all the other work on the chassis and running gear etc. 👍
Loving this project mate...proper in to it...😎😎
Thanks Jason 👍
Great effort
Great vids.
Well done chops, looks good. Any further and you would have to split the engine as stated. I did the same on the engine of my old 996sps. 👍🏻👍🏻
Yes agreed, that's just not practical at the moment as would have to take it somewhere for reassembley 👍
No face mask when removing the paint? Chops! ;-)
Coming along nicely matey👍😜
