I loved to drive the Saracen. I must be one of the few people to drift a Saracen around a corner! I terrified the one passenger I had in the back and almost drove into an aircraft hangar in the process. The hydraulic steering was slow to input fast steering changes. I loved how smooth it was over bumps and potholes. Also, you could go as fast forward as back since the reverse was a separate box. Also cool was since the driver was exactly on the center-line of the vehicle, diving through a narrow gap was easy, just aim dead center and floor it. Fast cornering was also possible because of the pre-select and the GCP (gear change pedal) gearbox. Select the gear you want to exit the corner with, scream up to the corner in 5th, brake like a mad-man, pump the GCP and turn and floor it again. Whew, what a rush.
When I was at school the army was still allowed to come along and do a presentation. It was ultimately a recruiting exercise but if felt more like PR. It did not persuade me to join the army but it gave us a morning away from lessons I no longer remember. It was one of those things, now looked at askance that I still remember as part of my youth.
I have a Mk6, reverse flow cooling, love it. Fantastic transmission whine, people can hear you coming from a distance quite a unique sound. Oddly enough, I have never had anyone ‘cut me up’ or block my way when driving it.
A few years ago one of My Neighbours had one of these parked in his driveway. Apparently bought it at Auction. Unclear what exactly his plans or intentions were. Beautiful Vehicle.
@@toade1583 it was produced from 52’ to the early 70’s so it’s mechanicals were obsolete, we went through an economic downturn in the 70’s, so they soldiered on with obsolete vehicles for quiet a few years, soft skinned or lightly armoured trucks and land rovers, unless they used tracked APC’s . Shameful really that so many men went into harms way with a few mm’s of alloy or plastic to protect them.
I remember driving these You had to kick down the clutch and put it in semi auto to get moving lol six forward and 6 reverse...if you didnt kick down the clutch it kicked back and your knee would strike the metal dash and it was sore geez many a time i did that lol. great screamer also.. you heard it coming a mile away with that rolls royse engine.
This vehicle was designed with the help of Professor Seamus Timoney who went on to set up his own company in Ireland which designed and built armored cars for the Irish Defence Forces in the late sixties and seventies right up to the eighties and are still involved with producing specialist vehicles to this day.
Scottish Outdoors Yes they do , it’s all in the mileage and the steering you put in , to unwind you find a patch of grass or drive up on to the pavement.
The 'can' loved by all who drove them a Rolls Royce of a vehicle. Many happy hours spent in one, trying to do battle with Belfast's black taxis who unfortunately dodged me successfully, on so many occasions.
Love to see 2000 made heavier armour and better protection for wheels. Better faster than land rover soft skin vehicle. Better than Germany weisil light tank

Why did they get rid of it
