Props to the men who devote their life to restoring WWII tanks, and we all know which is the one tank everyone wants from that era (besides the folks who prefer a Panther). Even though it was the war-winner, who really wants a T-34? You could probably still buy one cheaply somewhere in the old USSR. The Krauts built sexy beasts, just not enough of them.

      В общем-то, pz 6 был лузером войны, как и вся гитлеровская Германия, а сравнивать т-34 с тигром некорректно. т-34 надо сравнивать с pz 4. Сравнение будет далеко не в пользу последнего. А с тигром сравнивайте и ИС 2 с пушкой 120 мм или ИСУ 152, если знаете такие.

    • @beersmurff
      @beersmurff 5 лет назад +2

      @@thewomble1509 Not really. the Tiger didnt fail. it was just naturally replaced with the Tiger 2 due to new demands. But yes, it was ineffective to produce compared to the Panther and Tiger 2, but the German industry was better geared in 43-44 than it was in 42-43. So some of it is down to industry effectiveness that never reached the US, UK or Sovjet efficiency.
      But the Tiger 1 had more than a year of almost uncontested fighting. It was a Heavy break through tank and only build in small numbers. And where it was deployed it wrecked massive havoc from 42-43. A whole year in a 6 year war is massive advantage and makes up for all the flaws it had.

    The Tiger was the prematurely born parent of all main battle tanks. They forced the Allies to produce Tiger killers at a great research and developement cost just to counter a single threat. A good strategy it also set the bar for the next generation of MBT"s

    • @sirmoke9646
      @sirmoke9646 5 лет назад +3

      Nope and double nope. It was designed as a heavy break trough tank pushed into the general battle tank role due to necessity. The allies didn't counter a single threat, they realized that "oh shit tank design is really accelerating we need better stuff NOW" just like every other participant of WW2.

      I agree. Others say the Panther but you’re right on with your assessment. Look at all MBTs now and they are all heavily armored and armed and weigh in the same ballpark as the Tiger.

    • @ItsATrap614
      @ItsATrap614 5 лет назад

      @Secure White Existence It's role was not anti air. It had a MG34 for self defence, whose 7.92 mauser ammunition was not very effective against contemporary fighters and fighter-bombers.

    • @ItsATrap614
      @ItsATrap614 5 лет назад +1

      I'd argue medium tanks like the Sherman, PzIV and T34 were actually the grandfathers of the MBT's.
      A good, balanced mix of armor, firepower and mobility. Versatility, reliability and commonality.
      In the 50's tank development reached a point where armor advances couldn't keep up with the advances in ammunition. Armor plates rapidly became obsolete, instead designers went in the direction of mobility to avoid being hit altogether. This is also the time where the traditional heavy tanks like the IS-series went out of favor while the medium tanks of the day (T54/55 to keep with my Russian example) slotted into the MBT role and were further developed in this direction.

    • @ItsATrap614
      @ItsATrap614 5 лет назад

      @Secure White Existence They weren't intended to when they entered service. Like I mentioned, the medium tank only really evolved into the MBT in the 50's with the rise of ATGM and discarding sabot, which made heavy tanks obsolete in an instant.
      Still, even in WW2 there's a very clear change for the medium tank across the board, later versions of which were all fitted with long-barrel high velocity guns to better be able to deal with enemy armor. Because even if they weren't originally intended to, they still ended up in tank on tank combat sometimes.
      Also, it should be noted that even today an MBT's main role isn't engaging enemy tanks, it's main role is still punching holes and exploiting them.
      Taking out the enemy's tanks by way of air, artillery or infantry using ATGM's is often much more (cost) effective than entering a slugging match. However this doesn't mean a tank shouldn't be equiped to deal with other tanks and do it well.

    Since everybody else is giving an opinion of the Tiger, I might as well contribute:
    The Tiger is a good tank with a few caveats. It had a powerful gun and good armour, so of course it was a formidable opponent against any other tank on the battlefield, but with its high fuel consumption, mechanical issues and slow traversing, the Tiger was not good on the offensive.

    • @nagmashot
      @nagmashot 3 года назад +12

      the Tiger had not more reliablity issues than other ww2 tank...in fact it was much more reliable than the russian T-34 which was other than propaganda claimed a pack full of failures on tracks... engine lifetime often ends after 30hours of use... the ammount of tanks that left the factory without any major issue was at 8% at war begin and improved to 25% by war end...means 75% of all T-34 left factory with a major failure that needed to be fixed by field mechanics befor it could run into battle... and btw... two T-34 already consume more than one Tiger... and need twice the number of crew and are not equal as good. Germanys biggest handicap was the constant lack of fuel ...Germany lost most of its tanks because they run out of fuel... not because of enemy action or mechanical failure... btw the most unreliable tanks of ww2 were all british used during the africa campain were many broke down befor they emptyed their first tank of fuel

      With a Staffellaufwerk there was no need to unscrew the outer wheels for train transport and getting access to the inner wheels was less time consuming.
      Allied after war reports claimed something different ... in a frensh report they claimed the German maintenance units did magic to keep the Panther tsnks rolling taken into account under what conditions they had to work...and no there was nothing a field shop could not repair...expect a totaly destroyed tank... replacing a transmission engine gun optics radio etc. was their daily bussiness

    Conducir un TIGER era todo un agrado segun comentarios de especialistas en temas historicos ya que los carros alemanes a partir de 1941 ya ESTABAN EQUIPADOS CON TRANSMISIONES AUTOMATICAS HIDROESTATICAS , ademas que se elimino ese sistema de palancas para la direccion a cambio de un semivolante tipo medialuna muy similar a los sistemas de conduccion de algunos cargadores frontales modernos de direccion articulada . Debio ser una gran novedad para quienes capturaron este tipo de maquinas especialmente los rusos ya que su famoso T 34 estaba equipado con un sistema de palancas y su suspension a base de barras de torsion tenian la desagradable tendencia a transmitir las vibraciones a las palancas del conductor , ademas una transmision manual sin sincronizar que era irritante . No es novedad que los modelos rusos posteriores llevaran este tipo de transmision copiado a los alemanes pero tambien con los defectos propios de la ingenieria inversa mal hecha.....saludos

      @Oliver Viehland Hmmm,.. alot of people insisting that the Tiger tank has this weak drivetrain. Yet,..it didn't break , did it ? Also , isn't the gearbox an automatic ? Also, where did you learn to drive a Tiger tank ? I mean , I drive trucks and I used to drive APC (439) when I was in the army, way back when, so I guess you could say I'm a professional driver with a little experience on tracked vehicles, and I wouldn't go criticizing this guys performance. Not that I've ever driven an actual tank or anything , I've never touched a chieftain or a challenger for instance. So it does seem a bit strange you telling everyone how to drive a tiger tank, to me at least..

    Barely any smoke from the engine, suspension rides like a dream, doesnt shovel massive amounts of dirt up with the tracks, hardly has any ground pressure in spite of weighing 56 ton. What a marvel of a tank. Then you watch a t-34 jumping around, seeing nothing from it's own diesel smoke and imagine the hot hell of fumes inside. Or a Centurion shoveling tonnes of dirty with it's poorly designed tracks.

    • @jocar15
      @jocar15 5 лет назад +1

      In truth, the Centurion was almost an objectively superior design to the Tiger, and lacked many of the faults inherent in making your tank a giant, heavy, slow box with a gun mounted on top. Indeed, even the T-34/85 had far more longevity in its design than the Tiger did, not to even mention the Centurion.

    • @beersmurff
      @beersmurff 5 лет назад +4

      @@jocar15 No one said the Centurion was worse than the Tiger et al. But I have stood next to many a Centurion in my days, and believe me. It's a shovel when going through sand and dirt. The tracks on the Centurion was a major flaw and never designed correctly. And it was under gunned when introduced.
      Also, the Tiger wasnt slow. It was the fastest heavy tank of the time. Try pit it against the other heavy tanks of the time. Churchill, KV1, Char-1 bis and t-35. Tiger wins.
      T34-85 was a later design. hardly fair to compare it to the Tiger that was designed and in action way before. Also the T34-85 was a medium tank.
      Nothing you said changes the fact, that the Tiger was a marvel of a tank when it was first introduced and reigned supreme for almost a year. A year is an insane amount of time in a 6 year war. Sadly, they were expensive to produce, but then again, it was a heavy break through tank, and you dont want/need too many of those. And, before the WoT-kids start, no tank can win a war. You need soldiers, planes, ships and other weapons just as much. All they do is help in various degree, through numbers and/or quality :-)

    • @jocar15
      @jocar15 5 лет назад

      @@beersmurff As a tank it was really not a marvel in any sense of the word, it had a thick armor plate and a large gun but in terms of other factors it was substantially behind. As for the Churchill, T-35, and Char tanks, those are also older vehicles than the Tiger itself, and were designed for different doctrinal roles. In terms of speed, the Tiger's engine was downrated in order to provide improved engine life that was quite abhorrent on earlier models. Lastly, the Centurion when first produced (i.e. the Mk. 3 & Mk. 5) were armed with the 20-Pdr gun, which was by no means under-gunned especially when its APDS ammunition reached mass-production. It could kill a T-54 quite easily and by no means did any German tank of WW2 really pose a challenge for this gun to penetrate. Even the behemoth that was the Konigstiger could be penetrated through the turret with such ammunition.

    Fury brought me here. The Tiger 1 is surely larger than the Sherman tanks, but the 131 didn't look much smaller compared to its successors, specifically the Leopard 2 (which the GTA V Rhino is based on). That vintage WWII monster sure holds up well considering its age.
